South Africa take heart from past battles

Adrian Birrell, South Africa’s assistant coach, believes they have the ability to bat out the fifth day against India, like they did against Australia in Adelaide in 2012

There will be fight all the way – Birrell

A year and a month ago, almost to the day, South Africa finished the fourth day of a Test on 77 for 4, trailing Australia by 353 and staring at a heavy defeat. That evening in Adelaide, Russell Domingo, who was then the assistant coach, said South Africa’s chances were “probably out of the window,” and the team appeared to have accepted defeat. That was not to be. Faf du Plessis led the defiance campaign against Australia to secure a hard-fought draw. South Africa have not been involved in a Test that has gone to the fifth day since. Until now.Domingo is now the head coach, and South Africa have finished the fourth day on 138 for 2, trailing India by 319, but they do not believe they will be beaten. Their assistant coach Adrian Birrell brought nothing but fighting talk to the press conference.”We are drawing on past experiences and we believe we can do it. We’ve shown resilience, we batted a whole day before,” he said. “This team has done remarkable things in the past and we get a bit of a lift from that. It would be a remarkable thing if we can do it again.”Negotiating India’s fresh seamers in the morning will be crucial to South Africa’s chances of saving the Test, or winning it•AFP

Last year, Australia had been a bowler down after James Pattinson left the field with a rib injury and the pitch stayed placid throughout the game. India’s arsenal, however, is fully fit and the Wanderers surface has shown signs of variable bounce with the cracks opening up, making chances of salvaging something from this Test more difficult. With India scoring more freely in the second innings than they did in the first, Birrell is hopeful the surface will not become a minefield. “When you are in, runs flow. It’s a high scoring ground, you get value for shots,” he said. “The pitch doesn’t have too many demons, we know we can survive there and get runs there.”With a set batsmen in Alviro Petersen and the man who did it in Adelaide, du Plessis, at the crease, Birrell believed South Africa have the best people at the crease to start the final morning. Both are men under pressure. Petersen had not scored more than 30 in ten innings before this one, while du Plessis’ last fifty was seven innings ago.Petersen has already eased some of the load by surviving a challenging period, scoring briskly and passing fifty. “Alviro played fantastically today. He is well placed for a big score,” Birrell said. “They are both fighters, they are not going to give it away. It’s a great opportunity for both of them to play a meaningful and long innings.”Spending time in the middle is South Africa’s primary aim, and Birrell advocated the importance of taking it step by step. “It’s not an easy task to bat a full day. All we are doing is saying, let us have a look at the end of every session,” he said. “We didn’t look at 135 overs when we started. We looked at seeing it to tea with as little damage as possible.” South Africa got to the first break having faced 11 overs for no loss.Next, they will look to bat the first hour and then the morning session – something which du Plessis had described in Adelaide, when the team survived 148 overs in four-and-a-half sessions to save the Test. “We are still well placed to bat through the whole day,” Birrell said. “We don’t look at the bigger picture, we try and look in smaller bits.”In Adelaide a draw was the realistic goal, but with the runs South Africa need here, if they bat out the full day victory is not impossible. Birrell indicated they knew as much but stressed the primary goal was to draw. “We just bat. We are thinking of batting long. The runs will come. If we do bat 90 overs, it will be a fantastic game,” he said. “At the moment we are thinking draw but you never know. If we bat the full day and we bat at the rate we normally bat at, we won’t be far away. We will worry about that when we are 85 overs.”Before that, many other things will come into consideration. Dealing with India’s fresh bowlers will be one of them. Negotiating a second new-ball after lunch will be another, and fatigue – physical and mental – will also play a role. Already, they are guarding against the last of those.South Africa did not send Jacques Kallis in at No.4 because he had bowled more than his usual quota of overs, and the management felt that “an extra night’s rest would be of benefit to him.” They didn’t promote AB de Villiers either because he had kept wicket all day.”We’ve been under the pump before. They are professionals. You expect every time you start a Test, it will go the full distance,” he said. “It’s another hard day tomorrow. But there is a lot of fight in that dressing room. There will be fight all the way.”When they held Australia at arm’s length in Adelaide, South Africa punctured the hosts’ confidence, and du Plessis believed it played a role in them winning in Perth. Given that the deciding Test against India is in Durban, where South Africa have lost their last four matches, they will want a similar morale-booster.

Vohra 187 lays firm platform for Punjab

A round-up of the first day’s play of the ninth-round Group A games of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Dec-2013
ScorecardPunjab need an outright win if they are to ensure a place in the knockouts, and on day one against Jharkhand in Dhanbad, Manan Vohra laid the platform for them to do just that. In his sixth first-class match, the 20-year-old Vohra struck his first century, and made sure it was a big one; he made 187, and at a brisk rate too, as Punjab motored to 380 for 4 by stumps. He was chiefly supported the other opener, Jiwanjot Singh, who made 78. Uday Kaul and Yuvraj Singh got off to starts but could not kick on. Legspinner Samar Quadri picked up two wickets, but was the most expensive of the Jharkhand bowlers, going at 5.20 in his 25 overs. Jharkhand will need to take the lead to make sure they are not relegated.
ScorecardHaryana too are in a must-win situation, but for them it is all about avoiding relegation. Their opposition, Odisha, are also at the wrong end of the Group A table, and they need to at least take a point from this game, by drawing it, to keep from dropping to Group C. At stumps on day one in Bhubaneswar, Odisha got to 221 for 9, meaning neither team had the clear advantage. The innings was built around openers Girjia Rout’s 94. While two others in the top four got into the 30s, neither could make it count, and a mini-collapse ensued primarily courtesy Haryana captain Amit Mishra. Odisha slid from 173 for 4 to 208 for 9 as Mishra picked up four and offspinner Jayant Yadav claimed three.Read the full report of Gujarat v Mumbai here: Misfiring batting leaves Mumbai in a hole.Read the full report of Delhi v Karnataka here: Vinay four-for leaves Delhi in disarray.

Centuries from Hanuma Vihari and Dwaraka Ravi Teja powered Hyderabad to 341 for 4 against Jammu & Kashmir at the Gandhi Memorial Science College Ground.Rain had deemed play impossible on day one, but once the game started on Monday, the visitors immediately made inroads, rallying to 109 for 1 thanks to a partnership of 87 for the second wicket between Akshath Reddy and Ravi Teja. Akshath fell for 49, but Ravi Teja and Vihari punished the bowling in a 203-run stand for the third wicket. Vihari was eventually dismissed for 109, having struck 18 fours, but Ravi Teja remained unbeaten on 153 with 17 fours and two sixes.
ScorecardFourteen wickets fell in Agartala on day two, as the match between Tripura and Andhra remained finely balanced.Tripura, who began the day 165 for 9, added 14 to their score in five overs before Paidikalwa Vijaykumar trapped Tushar Saha lbw in the 68th over. Andhra, in their reply, lost three quick wickets to stumble to 42 for 3. Bodapati Sumanth led the recovery with 55, but from 116 for 3, the visitors collapsed and were bundled out for 163. Seamer Rana Dutta finished with 5 for 51 – his best figures in first-class cricket – while Manisankar Murasingh grabbed three wickets.Tripura had secured a crucial 16-run first-innings lead, but Andhra clawed their way back into the game with three early wickets, leaving the hosts 20 for 3 heading into the penultimate day.
ScorecardHalf-centuries from Harshad Khadiwale and Ankit Bawne helped Maharashtra secure a first-innings lead of 91 against Himachal Pradesh in Pune. Having bowled Himachal out for 228 on the first day, Maharashtra began the second brightly with a 91-run opening stand between Khadiwale and Rohit Motwani. Rishi Dhawan dismissed Motwani in the 27th over to extend his tally in this season’s Ranji Trophy to 49 wickets, but Maharashtra carried on with a partnership of 70 between Khadiwale and Sangram Atitkar, who made 49.Himachal fought back with two quick wickets, but Bawne put on stands of 68 and an unbroken 82 with Khadiwale and Chirag Khurana respectively to lift the team to 319 for 4. Khadiwale struck 11 fours during his 92, while Bawne’s 76 not out included eight fours.
ScorecardMedium-pacer Nizar Niyas finished with a first-class personal-best of 6 for 82 to help Kerala secure a vital 31-run lead against Goa in Porvorim.Goa were a comfortable 132 for 1, thanks to a second-wicket stand of 117 between Amogh Sunil Desai and Sagun Kamat, who made 49 and 96 respectively. However, both batsmen were dismissed in quick succession, and Goa failed to make the most of their start. None of their other batsmen made more than 20, as Niyas and Rohan Prem ran through Goa’s batting order to dismiss them for 242.Kerala’s openers Nikhilesh Surendran and VA Jagadeesh batted out one over of their second innings without losing a wicket.

Junaid, Bhatti make it Pakistan's day

The Pakistan seamers shredded the Sri Lanka batting in unthreatening conditions to wrest control after a manic second session in Abu Dhabi

The Report by Devashish Fuloria31-Dec-2013
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBilawal Bhatti triggered Sri Lanka’s collapse with a wicket immediately after lunch•AFPThe Pakistan seamers shredded Sri Lanka’s batting in unthreatening conditions to wrest control after a manic second session in Abu Dhabi. Junaid Khan maintained his stranglehold over the Sri Lanka batsmen, picking up his fourth five-wicket haul against them, but central to the collapse was debutant Bilawal Bhatti’s post-lunch spell during which he picked up three wickets – two of them in one over. The twitter feed was abound with the question: “What did they eat for lunch?”The pitch in its green guise didn’t offer much to the bowlers, but it was a mix of tight bowling and loose batting from Sri Lanka that resulted in their innings slipping off the precipice. From a comfortable 66 for 1 at lunch, Sri Lanka lost seven wickets for 58 runs and only a rearguard action from their captain, Angelo Mathews, who scored a counterattacking 91, prevented a complete capitulation.Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 204 and Pakistan had a comfortable start to their innings till a run-out off the last ball took some sheen away. Khurram Manzoor was left stranded mid-pitch after dabbing a ball to cover, and Pakistan ended the day on 46 for 1.It all started in the first over of the second session when Kaushal Silva – who had been patient, but circumspect, all morning – played inside the line of a short-of-a-length delivery from Bhatti only to edge it to the keeper. Sixty-six for 1 became 67 for 2, but Sri Lanka wouldn’t have worried too much about it as they had the experienced pair of Mahela Jayawardene, who was playing his first Test in almost a year, and Kumar Sangakkara in the middle. That safety cushion was soon pulled away by Bhatti in his next over. He got his second delivery – probably the best of the day – to rear awkwardly on Jayawardene and the batsman edged it to the keeper. However, the TV umpire came to Jayawardene’s rescue as the replays showed the bowler had overstepped. The very next ball though – a yorker, Jayawardene edged it to Adnan Akmal again. Seventy-six for 2 became 76 for 3.Two balls later, Chandimal played a poor shot, chasing a wide delivery, and paid the price as the edge flew straight to Misbah-ul-Haq at first slip. Seventy-six for 4.At the other end, Sangakkara was watching the drama unfold but was unfazed and was defending solidly. However, three overs after Bhatti’s double-strike, his eyes lit up seeing Junaid bowl a wide, length ball. Nine out of 10 times, Sangakkara would have crashed it through covers, but today he slashed it straight to the cover-point fielder. Pakistan were ecstatic to see the back of their tormentor. Eighty-two for 5 now.Junaid then added three more wickets – Prasanna Jayawardene edged to Akmal, before Sachithra Senanayake and Rangana Herath were removed off successive deliveries – to complete his five-for in an eight-over spell. Hundred-and-twenty-four for 8.Running out of partners, Mathews tried to score whenever possible – he hit three boundaries in a Bhatti over immediately after Sangakkara’s departure – and brought up his half-century in 49 balls. He added a crucial 61 with Shaminda Eranga, who scored 14, for the ninth wicket and 19 for the tenth wicket during a period of play where Pakistan allowed him to farm the strike. He was finally stumped off a Saeed Ajmal doosra early in the third session, falling in the ninties for the third time in his career. The dramatic second session was in complete contrast with the first, during which Sri Lanka, despite the loss of Dimuth Karunaratne, had looked comfortable after being put in to bat. The two openers added 50 in the first hour of the day as Pakistan didn’t make the impact they would have hoped for. However, the winds started changing direction in the second hour as the bowlers adjusted their lines and length to stem the flow of runs.In the second over after the first drinks break, Junaid had a strong appeal for caught behind against Silva turned down by the umpire. Pakistan immediately called for a review – they had reasons to be confident as the ball made a sound as it passed the bat – but with no Hot Spot available for this series, the decision went in the favour of the batsman, extending Pakistan’s poor run with the DRS (Pakistan wasted another review in the 55th over).Four overs later, Junaid had Karunaratne pushing away from the body and Asad Shafiq took a smart reflex catch at gully to end the 57-run opening-wicket stand. The wicket slowed Sri Lanka’s pace down – 16 runs came in the 12 overs after the drinks break. The runs dried up, and Pakistan had a feast after lunch.

INSULTOS A ZÉ NO AEROPORTO

Struggling Pakistan look for second wind

As the end of an engrossing tour approaches, Pakistan need a considerable change in momentum to win the last Test in Sharjah and draw level with Sri Lanka

Big PictureAs an engrossing tour winds up, Pakistan find themselves in need of a considerable change in momentum to draw the series, while Sri Lanka seek to build on the significant improvements they have achieved in the Tests so far. Suggestions that Pakistan were favourites, in the approach to the contest, seem distant now.Pakistan might have entered the series on a high, but find themselves on the back foot in the final Test. Their pace attack remains a decent threat, but has been unproductive so far, while spinners have struggled on pitches without much turn. The inconsistency of the top order has also affected Pakistan’s combination. Mohammad Hafeez was rewarded for his one-day form but he failed to extend his aptitude in the longer-format of the game, scoring 11, 80*, 21 and 1 at No. 3, while Ahmed Shehzad has also failed. The selection of Hafeez and Shehzad meant that the specialist No. 3 batsman, Azhar Ali, and Shan Masood were benched. In Dubai, Sri Lanka were in control of the match from the second session on day one until they hit the winning runs on the fifth afternoon. Consistency from their fast bowlers was key to that victory, but the batsmen have all worked themselves into form as well, with Nos 1 to 7 hitting half-centuries.Kumar Sangakkara has, in the past, been Sri Lanka’s sledgehammer against Pakistan, but among the more unexpected features of the 1-0 lead is that he has only contributed modestly towards it. He has played Saeed Ajmal exceedingly well in the past, but even without a big innings from him, Sri Lanka’s batsmen have played Ajmal safely, if not always with ease. Misbah-ul-Haq has called for a dry pitch in Sharjah and, if he gets his wish, it will be clear whether the Sri Lanka batsmen were just fortunate to play Ajmal on unresponsive surfaces, or whether they have collectively learned to neutralise him as no other team has done in recent years. As a team, Sri Lanka have also played within themselves, adhering strictly and persistently to the plans of attack devised in the dressing room. At times, Pakistan have tried to wear Sri Lanka down, only to find their opponents were more resilient. Awash with inexperience, Sri Lanka will not want to change a good thing, so it may be up to Pakistan to change the tempo of the cricket in order to put the visitors under pressure.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)

Pakistan: LDLWL
Sri Lanka: WDWDL
In the spotlight Dimuth Karunaratne has deserved his extended stretch in the national team after sustained excellence at the A-team level, but he is yet to seal his place atop the innings. A natural strokemaker, particularly gifted through the leg side, Karunaratne has had the habit of making good starts before falling prey to his own ambition and playing one stroke too many. There is enough in his cricket to convince fans and selectors that he can succeed in Tests, but in a series where many others in the top-order have outshone him, at least one score above fifty in Sharjah will put him at ease ahead of the Bangladesh tour.Saeed Ajmal is under the spotlight once again. He was wicketless in the second innings in Abu Dhabi for 49 overs, conceding 115 runs, and had to wait another 28.2 overs in Dubai to take his first wicket, making the stretch 77.2 overs. He is desperate to put his fluctuating form in the last two Tests behind him.Pitch and conditionsThe track in Sharjah looks flatter and if a batting-friendly pitch is prepared, it may help the team batting first. The pitch is also expected to offer turn from the third day.Teams newsPakistan will be forced to bring in a bowler in place of pacer Bilawal Bhatti, who injured his hamstring during the second Test and may look to add left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman to strengthen their spin reserves.Pakistan (probable): 1. Shan Masood/Ahmed Shehzad, 2. Khurram Manzoor, 3. Mohammad Hafeez/Azhar Ali, 4. Younis Khan, 5. Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6. Asad Shafiq 7. Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), 8. Saeed Ajmal, 9. Rahat Ali/Mohammad Talha, 10. Junaid Khan, 11. Abdur RehmanMahela Jayawardene’s split webbing means he is unlikely to field in the slips, but he is almost certain to play, having trained normally in the approach to the match. If the pitch looks likely to take turn, Sri Lanka may rest Nuwan Pradeep, who was short of his quickest pace in the second innings in Dubai, and play a second spinner. Sachithra Senanayake may get a second game, but uncapped Dilruwan Perera is also in the side, and is the more highly-rated offspinner in first-class cricket. Elsewhere, Angelo Mathews will not want to change a winning combination, even if his team is a little light on bowling options.Sri Lanka (probable): 1. Dimuth Karunaratne, 2. Kaushal Silva, 3. Kumar Sangakkara, 4. Mahela Jayawardene, 5. Dinesh Chandimal, 6. Angelo Mathews (capt), 7. Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8. Sachithra Senanayake/ Dilruwan Perera/Nuwan Pradeep, 9 Shaminda Eranga, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Suranga LakmalStats and trivia Kumar Sangakkara has at least one hundred in each of his six previous series against Pakistan. Dimuth Karunaratne’s lowest score in the series is 24, and he only has one half-century. Junaid Khan is the leading wicket-taker in the series, with 11 scalps at 26.09.Quotes “In the past there was a feeling that the fast bowlers aren’t effective, but we were able to change that idea on this tour.”

“We have to really put some effort and get a result which we want, to level the series. There is no other option for us.”

Pitbull manso! Felipe Melo muda postura, diminui cartões e se destaca

MatériaMais Notícias

Felipe Melo e polêmica quase sempre andam juntos.

Mahela, Herath rested from ODIs

Sri Lanka have rested Mahela Jayawardene and Rangana Herath from the three-ODI series against Bangladesh, which follows the two Twenty20 internationals later this month

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Feb-2014Sri Lanka have rested Mahela Jayawardene and Rangana Herath from the three-ODI series against Bangladesh, which follows the two Twenty20 internationals later this month. They also left out batsmen Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne from the one-day squad that played Pakistan in the UAE, and brought in spinning allrounder Angelo Perera, who made 244 off 204 balls in his most recent first-class game.Mahela had also missed the limited-overs games in the UAE in December last year because he was on paternal leave. Both Mahela and Herath will be available for the two Twenty internationals that precede the ODIs, though, subject to the state of Herath’s injured knee, which has put him in severe doubt for the second Test. These Twenty20s are Sri Lanka’s last official matches before the World Twenty20 March.Angelo Perera was also included in the T20 squad, while the players to miss out from the group that travelled to UAE were Ramith Rambukwella, Thirimanne and Kithuruwan Vithanage.Thisara Perera was named in both squads, after having his work ethic put under scrutiny by the national selectors. Perera was denied permission to play in the Big Bash League, and told instead to train with Sri Lanka’s A team, but he pleased the selectors well enough to return to the national fray. Doubts over Lasith Malinga’s fitness have also been quelled, after he returned from the BBL to Sri Lanka briefly, in order to address that issue.Middle-order batsman Ashan Priyanjan retained his place in the ODI squad, after having impressed with a 74 on debut in Abu Dhabi, in December. He has been with the team in Bangladesh, after replacing Prasanna Jayawardene in the Test squad. Both he and Angelo Perera also bowl effective finger spin in domestic cricket.ODI squad: Angelo Mathews (capt), Dinesh Chandimal (vc), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kusal Perera, Kumar Sangakkara, Ashan Priyanjan, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Angelo Perera, Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suranga Lakmal, Sachithra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Seekuge Prasanna.T20 squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Lasith Malinga (vc), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kusal Perera, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Angelo Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suranga Lakmal, Sachithra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath, Seekuge Prasanna.
