Live Test coverage remains absent from SABC

Cricket fans in South Africa will again have to go without live free-to-air coverage of the majority of the Test series against Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Jan-2013Cricket fans in South Africa will again have to go without live free-to-air coverage of the majority of the Test series against Pakistan after talks between Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) failed to come to an agreement. The outcome is similar to that reached for the New Zealand tour, where the Test matches were restricted to highlights on SABC, the national broadcaster, and the ODIs and Twenty20s were shown live. However, the board had retained the hope that for the season’s main attraction, the visit of Pakistan, that all the matches would be available on free-to-air television but now the five-day games will remain ball-by-ball on pay service SuperSport. There has, though, been a small increase in what is available free-to-air. SABC will show two blocks of footage on a daily basis during the Test series. This will comprise a broadcast in the afternoon which will contain a mixture of highlights and live coverage. Full evening highlights, however, will not be screened until 10pm at night.CSA’s commercial manager, Marc Jury, said: “Although we could not reach an agreement on live ball-by-ball coverage of the Test Series, we are satisfied that there is an increase in coverage compared to the New Zealand series.”With the Pakistan series being the last home international series of the 2012/2013 season, we will definitely be looking at how best to manage our free to air broadcast rights going forward to ensure that all South Africans are able to watch the Proteas when playing at home.”Cricket is the second-most popular sport to football in South Africa and almost five times as many people watch T20 and ODI matches on the SABC compared to SuperSport. Nearly seven times more watch Test cricket on the national broadcaster.

Mithali Raj wants runs and partnerships 'rather than thinking about fearless cricket'

The India ODI captain has asked for consistency from openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma

Mithali Raj: ‘We have a lot to do in terms of our bowling’

Mithali Raj, India’s ODI captain, has called for greater accountability from the opening pair of Smriti Mandhana, especially, and Shafali Verma after the two fell for low scores in India’s nine-wicket loss in the first ODI in Mackay. While a better start – the pair fell in quick succession after adding 31 – might have helped India put up more than the 225 for 8 they managed, better bowling could have made things tough for Australia in their chase. They eventually got to their target in just 41 overs, and Raj was unhappy about the performance of the spinners as well.Related

“The opening partnership – if they can give us a good start, clearly the middle order can take the momentum from there,” Raj told reporters after the match. “But if you lose wickets, you actually have to build an innings in the first ten overs. Smriti [16 in 18 balls] has been on the international circuit for a while, so we would expect some runs from her.”When you know the sort of batting line-up the Australians have, anything closer to 250 is what we were looking at, but losing two wickets, especially batters like Smriti and Shafali [8 in 10 balls], in the powerplay itself, it was important the middle order starts to compensate for that and build a partnership there. And that’s what we did with Yastika [Bhatia, the debutant, who scored a 51-ball 35], but then again, we didn’t get enough partnerships in the lower-middle order.”You always bat according to the situation. Of course, the players need to play shots, but it doesn’t mean you be reckless. We need to now actually have partnerships rather than thinking about fearless cricket. The girls need to get down to developing some partnerships in the middle and that will definitely give them confidence at some point to play fearlessly.”Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma fell in quick succession after putting on 31•Getty Images

Both Mandhana and Verma fell to the 18-year-old quick Darcie Brown after India were asked to bat on a pitch with bounce, pace and carry. The two have opened together in 25 T20Is, but only three times before this in ODIs, adding 23, 56 and 46, all in England in June. The relative inexperience of the 17-year-old Shafali means the team management would like to give her “breathing space”, but Mandhana, who has over 140 India caps, has struggled for consistency in limited-overs cricket since 2020. In nine ODI innings this year, against South Africa at home and in England before the latest outing, Mandhana has only one fifty and seven scores under 30 in a total of 244 runs at an average of 30.50.In a post-match interview with the host broadcaster on Tuesday, Raj made it clear that “when you’re put in to bat, you expect an opening partnership of minimum 50 runs.” Against a well-rounded Australia attack, India had just one 50-plus stand, between Bhatia and Raj, who added 77 for the third wicket, with the captain continuing to play the anchor as she went on to score her fifth straight fifty in the format.”Yastika – she had a very good [preparatory] camp in Bangalore. She was among runs and she continued that even in the practice game, whatever little she scored she was quite impressive and that is why without a doubt we picked her today in place of Harman [Harmanpreet Kaur] because Harman was injured,” Raj said. “The order we sent her [in] she was quite positive out there to score runs.”On her own performance – a 59th ODI fifty but at a sedate scoring rate (she took 12 balls to get off the mark and 92 deliveries to reach her half-century) – Raj said, “It is always in my mind to improve on that [strike rate] aspect. I wouldn’t say I definitely don’t think about it, but it’s not something that crosses my mind when I walk in to bat.”I’ve always felt no matter how many runs I score there’s always some room for improvement. I want to evolve as a player, too. I know I’ve been scoring runs but it isn’t enough for the team to win, so there’s always room for improvement.”As there is on the strike-rotation front. “As far as running between the wickets is concerned, there’s still a lot to be achieved in that aspect,” Raj agreed. “This is not just about the running between the wickets, but overall the batting department needs to work hard because just not running, but even in batting [because] as batters you need to play and score runs.”With just 225 on the board, India needed a lot from the three-pronged spin contingent of Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana and Poonam Yadav. Given how seamlessly Australia blunted India’s attack, with their top three of Alyssa Healy, Rachael Haynes and Meg Lanning blitzing solid half-centuries and putting on century stands for the first two wickets, Raj admitted that there was a concern.Mithali Raj scored her fifth straight half-century in ODIs, but it was yet another sedate innings•Getty Images

“Yes, we do have a lot to work in terms of our bowling department because predominantly we are spinners, a spin attack, and spinners are getting hit everywhere, so that’s something we need to work on,” she said. “The wicket is good for batters as well as fast bowlers. Having said that, the bowlers need to be a little more tighter in their line and length on a wicket like this, which we did get to see with the Australian fast bowlers but not really with the Indian seamers.”Though Raj said she was unlikely to tinker much with the starting XI, she kept the possibility open for “maybe one or two changes” for the second ODI, on Friday at the same venue.Complimenting the debutants Bhatia, wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh and pacer Meghna Singh for doing “really well”, Raj did hint at a possible promotion to No. 3 for Ghosh.”We definitely are looking into all that,” she said. “But because it is her first game, you also want players to have some confidence in the role they’ve already played; Richa has already been part of the T20I squad and scored runs there at a particular order.”So, when she’s making her debut, you want to give a comfort level to a player get into the same role they’ve played and experienced. That is why she went in the order she did. But, yes, she was very impressive today and, clearly, it does put thoughts in our head that we could promote her up the order.”

Devdhar, Waghmode dominate Maharashtra

ScorecardTwo partnerships, of 66 and 92 runs respectively, carried Uttar Pradesh to 279 for 6 amid regular wickets against Tamil Nadu on the opening day in Chennai. Captain Mohammad Kaif, for whom this season has been productive in terms of runs, scored a half-century before falling to offspinner Malolan Rangarajan, who claimed three wickets. Kaif’s stand with Umang Sharma took their side to 123 for 2, but then four wickets fell for 64 runs. In trouble at 187 for 6, Ali Murtaza and Prashant Gupta added a further 92 runs before stumps.Tamil Nadu’s M Vijay took his third wicket in first-class wicket in the two overs he bowled.
ScorecardAn unbeaten 172-run partnership between Kedar Devdhar and Aditya Waghmode took Baroda to a strong 256 for 3 against Maharashtra in Pune. Baroda started their innings poorly with two quick wickets falling to seamer Shrikant Mundhe before the 10th over of the match. But opener Saurabh Wakaskar stuck with No. 3 Waghmode to add 70, before falling for 50 to spinner Akshay Darekar. Devdhar, the next batsman in, dominated the stand with Waghmode to reach a hundred before stumps. Waghmode ended the day with an unbeaten 87.
ScorecardOdisha’s combined bowling effort, led by medium-pacer Biplab Samantray, reduced Vidarbha to 188 for 8 on the first day in Cuttack. Five batsmen got starts, but no one scored more than 40. The innings was based on two productive stands, for the fourth wicket worth 74 between Amol Umarhande and Hemang Badani, and for the sixth wicket worth 49 between Gaurav Upadhyaya and captain Sairaj Bahutule. The scoring was slow throughout the day. Basant Mohanty, who bowled the maximum number of overs of all the bowlers, registered an economy rate of 1.06.
ScorecardHubli and its 31 degrees sunshine provided Haryana a stark contrast from the chilly, foggy north Indian towns where they have played much of the season, but for the first two sessions against Karnataka their batting floundered just as it has so often over the past two months. The several thousand fans who turned up to see the first first-class match in Hubli for a couple of decades would have returned home a happier lot had it not been for Amit Mishra and Jayant Yadav’s 125-run eighth wicket stand that lifted Haryana to 293 for 7.Read more of the report here.

Karnataka through after a thriller, take Baroda along

A wrap of the final day of the ninth round of Ranji Trophy matches in Group B

After a disappointing season, Karnataka needed a host of things to go their way – not only in their match, but in their group – for them to qualify. They needed Odisha to lose. Odisha lost. If they didn’t win by a bonus point, they needed Delhi to take a first-innings lead but not win their match. That happened too.As Delhi failed to take their opponents’ wickets, Karnataka were running out of time too, but they somehow kept producing the wickets on a flat Pune pitch against a determined Maharashtra side. After they managed to wrap Maharashtra’s second innings up for 561, Karnataka were left with 89 to chase in 13 overs. Not without drama, they did so with eight balls to spare, and progressed into the next round. At the start of the day, Maharashtra were 315 for 2, a deficit of only 158. Ankit Bawne began the day on 80 not out, and would remain undefeated. Karnataka kept pegging away at the other end. In the first session, HS Sharath picked up two wickets. After lunch, Maharashtra looked comfortable, but Syed Moinuddin broke through with the wicket of the dangerous Kedar Jadhav. Another partnership followed, this time between Bawne and Rahul Tripathi, but Sharath got rid of Tripathi before tea.Going into the final session, though, Maharashtra had already taken a lead of 40 runs, and had four wickets in hand. Karnataka’s state was not at all enviable. They had to take the wickets, and then wipe off all the additional runs. The clock kept ticking away.Abhimanyu Mithun, who took six wickets in the first innings, now provided the inspiration with the wickets of Shrikant Mundhe and Stayajit Bachhav in back-to-back overs. Still, Maharashtra had got 62 ahead by then. A little over 20 overs remained in the day’s play.To Karnataka’s annoyance, No. 10 Sachin Chaudhari swung his bat, and scored 14 off 19 balls, taking the lead to 84. It was all getting away from Karnataka, but Stuart Binny’s inspired move to get Amit Verma to bowl worked. The legspinner trapped Chaudhari, and Mithun finished the innings off in the next over. With Robin Uthappa not well, Karnataka opened with Kunal Kapoor and Lokesh Rahul. Kapoor managed just 8 off 12, and his wicket meant Karnataka would not win with a bonus point. That ensured Baroda, seven points adrift of Karnataka, were ensured qualification, but also that Karnataka would need Delhi to draw their game.Delhi fell short by three wickets in Nagpur, and Rahul and Binny hit their way towards a win. Rahul scored an unbeaten 42 off 34. Binny fell for 25 off 17, but fittingly their record-breaking wicketkeeper-batsman CM Gautam finished it off with 16 off eight balls. In the quarter-finals, Karnataka will face Saurashtra in Rajkot, and Baroda will be hosted by Mumbai. Maharashtra were relegated.
ScorecardDelhi needed to win their final game to progress to the next round or hope that Karnataka don’t won theirs, but were disappointed on both counts. On a flat track in Nagpur, having somehow enforced the follow-on on Vidarbha, Delhi could prise out only seven wickets on the final day. And in exceptional circumstances, Karnataka won their game moments after Delhi were denied.Shalabh Shrivastava provided the resistance for Vidarbha, who came into the match with a realistic chance of progressing but were frustrated by the flat pitch. Pradeep Sangwan, Vikas Mushra and Sumit Narwal picked up the wickets, but not fast enough. Delhi even got in 95 overs on the day, but couldn’t get past Shrivastava, who batted for five hours and 11 minutes.Vidarbha’s captain, Sairaj Bahutule, announced his retirement from first-class cricket after the match.
ScorecardIn the rain-affected, inconsequential match in Chennai, even a first-innings result was not possible. Haryana finished with 180 for 3 in response to Tamil Nadu’s 571 for 6 declared.

Ashes 2021-22: Content Khawaja ready to bat anywhere for Australia

Calls for Khawaja to open grow louder after a roaring start to the Shield season

Alex Malcolm09-Nov-2021Usman Khawaja believes he can bat anywhere in Australia’s top-order if he were to get an Ashes call-up but he says a middle-order place would make more sense than opening. The Queensland captain has started the Sheffield Shield season in exceptional form, with back-to-back centuries, and calls for him to return to the Test side for the first time since the 2019 Ashes series have been growing louder and louder.Khawaja has another chance to impress selectors at the Gabba on Wednesday when Queensland host Western Australia in a Shield clash, but he is already expected to be named in Australia’s extended Ashes squad ahead of the three-day intra-squad trial game scheduled for December 1-3 in Brisbane. The team for the Ashes opener will be selected from there. There have also been calls for Khawaja to open in the first Test at the Gabba. However, Khawaja himself downplayed that suggestion given he has opened just three times in 29 first-class innings since the 2019 Ashes tour for returns of 30, 4 and 2. His last 14 innings have been played exclusively at No.4 for Queensland.”If you’re talking about me opening, and what not, but I’ve been batting four for Queensland for the last two years,” Khawaja said. “So for me batting, if there’s a spot at five it’s as likely as opening the batting. It probably makes more sense in some respects. So for me, I think I’ve talked to selectors about it, I’ve told them I can bat anywhere along the order.”Khawaja does have an outstanding record opening the batting in Test cricket from a small sample size. He’s opened in seven innings across five Test matches in Australia and the UAE, scoring two centuries and two half-centuries at an average of 96.80. One of those centuries was in a pink-ball Test under lights against South Africa in Adelaide in 2016.He last opened in a Test in Sydney in 2019 before losing his place in the side during the 2019 Ashes after Marnus Labuschagne took his spot at No.3 following three consecutive half-centuries, having come in as Steven Smith’s concussion replacement at Lord’s.Khawaja is flattered by the support and well wishes he has received from people who want to see him back in the Test side, but he is content even if he isn’t recalled.”It’s just lovely to see all the support I’ve been getting from, you know, online, social media, just people coming up to me,” Khawaja said. “It’s nice to see, but for me, honestly, I guess I’ve been through the grind.”I played Test cricket. I haven’t. I’ve been playing professional cricket now for 14-odd years. I’m in a really good spot. And I have a lovely family, a beautiful wife, and a beautiful daughter. I’m really enjoying my life at the moment. I’ve got a lot of things to be grateful for.”I’d love to play for Australia. If it happens, if it doesn’t, honestly, it’s not in my thinking because I’m out here trying to score runs for Queensland.”Khawaja couldn’t resist the urge to poke fun at some criticism levelled at him by former Australian captain Ian Chappell, who told Channel Nine he didn’t think Khawaja was a good enough player at Test level to warrant a recall.”To me, it’s water off a duck’s back honestly, as Chappelli will have his opinions,” Khawaja said. “I guess you just have to, as a player, just concentrate on things you’re good at. I mean Chappelli is not even the best player in his family. So if I’m going to take advice I might take it from his younger brother maybe [laughing], who I get along with very well too, GC [Greg Chappell]. He’s a legend.”Khawaja was excited about the announcement that Australia will do a full tour of Pakistan early next year, given Khawaja was born there and recently played in the Pakistan Super League in the UAE.”It’s amazing, fingers crossed everything goes well,” Khawaja said. “I know CA is going to send a couple of people over in the not too distant future to just have a view of Pakistan.”It’s massive for Pakistan cricket, something they haven’t had for such a long time, a country that absolutely loves cricket. Even though [I was] born in Pakistan, for me, it’s just about spreading the beautiful game of cricket.”
