NZC to organise former captains' meet

New Zealand Cricket is organising a meeting of its former captains in the New Year in order “to open better lines of communication” regarding the development of the sport

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2012New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is organising a meeting of its former captains in the New Year in order “to open better lines of communication” regarding the development of the sport in the country. The move came after several players had criticised the board for its handling of the captaincy issue, and for not accepting their help in taking New Zealand forward.”Former captains will be invited to attend the meeting which is intended to be an annual event designed to provide quality input from both the former captains and the players who were part of their era in cricket,” NZC said in a statement. “Creating a vehicle for former captains and players to directly communicate their ideas and observations to NZC is complimented by the current constitutional review process that the board has committed to in the early part of next year.”Martin Crowe, Dion Nash, Simon Doull, Craig McMillan and John Parker were some of the former New Zealand players who had criticised the board, saying it had turned down their offers.NZC chief executive David White also said it was “time to draw a line” under the Ross Taylor captaincy controversy. “We’ve already acknowledged mistakes were made on this issue and we have learned from those mistakes,” he said. “Team management has given an undertaking to improve communication and to ensure nothing similar occurs again. The board and management of NZC make that same commitment.”NZC believes it now serves no useful purpose to further rake over the events of the captaincy change. We now need to focus on the tour of South Africa. This is going to be a challenging tour against one of the leading teams in the world, so it is important that the team now focuses and prepares to ensure it is competitive in this series.”New Zealand begin their tour of South Africa with a Twenty20 international in Durban on December 21.

Harris steps away from BBL

Ryan Harris’ recovery from shoulder surgery has consumed his BBL campaign for the Brisbane Heat, as the highly regarded fast bowler strives to be considered for Australia’s 2013 Test tours of India and England.Having undergone rotator cuff surgery in August, Harris had originally hoped to be fit in time to take part in Australia’s home Test series against Sri Lanka, starting on Friday in Hobart. But a careful recuperation process has taken longer than first thought, first ruling him out of any cricket before Christmas and now extending into the BBL phase of summer. While Harris has returned to the bowling crease, he is yet to deliver a ball at full pace or off his long run, and it has been decided that he is better off not rushing back for Twenty20 duty.”It’s disappointing because I am pretty close but to push now might not turn out to be the best thing for longer term,” Harris said. “Everyone agrees that I will be best suited to come back with Toombul in club cricket first up in January and then aim to be considered for the first Queensland games after the BBL.”I’ve been feeling pretty good in the nets so far, and while I’m not bowling off the full run-up or at full pace, I’m very positive about getting up to that level soon.”James Hopes, captain of the Bulls and the Heat, was hopeful that Harris’ conservative approach would reap benefits at the international level in the new year.”I pushed myself too hard with a knee injury last year for the first half of the BBL,” Hopes said. “I was fortunate enough to be able to take stock and opt for a less aggressive recovery schedule that got me back fit and well in time for the remaining Shield and one-dayers, and that’s what we’re going to do with Ryano.”He is bowling really well at this stage of his recovery, but it would have been unfair to throw him back into a BBL game and expect him to go full tilt from the outset. This is the best thing for him and will give him plenty of playing time for Queensland and allow him to build a case for the Australian tours to India and England.”I’m firmly convinced that with his bowling skill set, he is comfortably in the ranks of the best Test bowling line-up that Australia can field.”When fit, Harris is greatly valued by Australia’s captain Michael Clarke and the national selectors for his combination of swing, speed and accuracy. His bowling was a key plank of Australia’s series win in Sri Lanka in 2011, utilising a skidding, wicket-to-wicket method that will be suited to India.Beyond that lies the trip to England for the first leg of dual Ashes series.

P Sara bounce could boost New Zealand

ESPNcricinfo previews the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Colombo

The Preview by Andrew Fernando23-Nov-2012Match factsNovember 25-29, 2012
Start time 1000 local (0430 GMT)Doug Bracewell might find the bouncier P Sara pitch more suited to his kind of bowling•Associated Press

Big PictureThe second Test at the P Sara Oval finds the two teams heading in seemingly opposite directions. Sri Lanka had not won a Test series in three years until they defeated Pakistan at home in July, and if a manful recovery with the bat and ruthlessness with the ball in the Galle Test are any indication, they are a side who have reclaimed the fight they had misplaced following the 2011 World Cup and have begun to make winning a habit again.Sri Lanka’s pace bowlers were effective on a dry surface, landing heavy blows on New Zealand’s top order before Rangana Herath arrived to deliver the coup de grace. Herath himself continues to progress, having become the top wicket-taker in 2012 with his 11 wickets in Galle. Sri Lanka may also have uncovered a fast bowler with enough command of pace, seam and reverse swing to become a potential long-term spearhead in Shaminda Eranga. Their batting also seems less prone to the sporadic collapses that plagued them in the 12 months before the Pakistan series.New Zealand meanwhile, have slid to their worst losing streak since 1955. Their batsmen have been working on their technique against spin in the nets since their three-day loss, but even the two extra days may not be enough to rebound from a performance as woeful as their 118 all out in their second innings in Galle. Though they are short on time to vastly improve their techniques, they must acquire the psychological steel to survive at the crease for long periods against fine bowling. Their plight may not be as hopeless as it seems, as the bouncier P Sara pitch will assist their seam bowlers in the same way it assisted England’s in March, when they squared their two-match series with Sri Lanka, after also losing the first match in Galle. For Sri Lanka, this Test shapes as a doubly crucial fixture, as it may be their only real test before their first Test against Australia in Hobart. The considerable talent in New Zealand’s fast bowling unit was evident in Galle, and with the Canberra pitch on which Sri Lanka are scheduled to play their only warm-up match having a reputation for being on the slow side, the bouncy Colombo venue might serve as an opportunity for the team to pre-tune their techniques before they land in Australia. It may also give the hosts the opportunity to settle on a first-choice seam-bowling unit for the Tests to come, or at least, a chance to gauge how effective Nuwan Kulasekara’s new ball partnership with Eranga might be Down Under.Form guideSri Lanka: WDDWL (Most recent first)
New Zealand: LLLLLPlayer to watchDoug Bracewell has been one of New Zealand’s most consistent performers since making his debut just over a year ago, but he was unable to find the right length in Galle and went wicketless while his teammates prospered. But unlike Galle, the P Sara pitch often rewards hit-the-deck bowling and Bracewell’s back-of-a-length seamers may be more effective this time round.Suraj Randiv was put under some pressure by chief selector Ashantha de Mel, who said his place in the XI might be under threat if he does not have a good first Test. He too was less successful than his teammates in the first Test, despite bowling some tight spells, but the selectors seem to have backed him in the end, naming him in the squad to Australia as the second spinner. Sri Lanka are unlikely to leave him out in Colombo unless the pitch is uncharacteristically green, and a bagful of wickets there will do his confidence some good.Teams news Tillakaratne Dilshan has been passed fit and Dimuth Karunaratne will make way for him. Karunaratne’s second innings 60 in Galle has put some pressure on Tharanga Paranavitana though and Paranavitana will be keen to embed himself in that second opener’s spot, which is the only position in the Sri Lanka batting order that isn’t nailed down at present.Kulasekara and Eranga are the likely new-ball pair, and Chanaka Welegedara will only play if a third seamer is deemed necessary.Sri Lanka (probable): 1. Tillakaratne Dilshan/Dimuth Karunaratne, 2. Tharanga Paranavitana, 3. Kumar Sangakkara, 4. Mahela Jayawardene (c), 5. Thilan Samaraweera, 6. Angelo Mathews, 7. Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8. Nuwan Kulasekara, 9. Suraj Randiv, 10. Rangana Herath, 11. Shaminda Eranga.Tim Southee, whose terrific second-day spell breathed life into the first Test, is also doubtful for the second. New Zealand have two more seam bowlers in their ranks, but have said legspinner Todd Astle might get a debut – particularly if Southee cannot play.James Franklin had a woeful first Test with the bat, as epitomised by his 44-ball 3 in the first innings, and New Zealand may consider dropping him to play five bowlers.New Zealand (probable): 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Brendon McCullum, 3. Kane Williamson, 4. Ross Taylor, 5. Daniel Flynn, 6. James Franklin/ Todd Astle, 7. Kruger van Wyk, 8. Doug Bracewell, 9. Tim Southee/Todd Astle, 10. Jeetan Patel, 11. Trent BoultPitch and conditionsThe Colombo weather has largely held over the past week or so, and the only showers have been in the evening. A little more rain is forecast for the coming week, but if it follows the recent pattern, it may not have a major effect on the cricket. However, being November, there is always the chance of a front moving in and bedding down.Stats and trivia The victory in Galle was Sri Lanka’s fourth Test win since Muttiah Muralitharan retired in July 2010 Before the Mumbai Test between England and India began, Rangana Herath was leading Graeme Swann by one wicket in 2012, with 46 victims. Herath had played four fewer Tests Tim Southee’s has an average of 26.23 for 2012, while his career average is 37.85. He has more wickets (17) and a better economy rate (3.16) this year than in any preceding calendar year The P Sara Oval has had only one draw since 1993, but New Zealand were involved in that occasion in 2003, when Stephen Fleming hit an unbeaten 274.Quotes”We’re not thinking we can’t compete with them. We think we can win this Test match and that’s what we’re going out to do. Everyone needs to step up, learn from what happened in Galle and move forward.”

” We will definitely look to keeping the Kiwis under pressure as they have the firepower with both bat and ball so there’s no room for any complacency.”

Avesh Khan and Venkatesh Iyer to join Indian team as net bowlers during T20 World Cup

They join Umran Malik in the net bowlers’ list; teams have until October 15 to finalise their squads

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-2021Avesh Khan and Venkatesh Iyer have been asked by the BCCI to stay on in the UAE after the completion of the IPL to join Umran Malik as net bowlers for the Indian team during the T20 World Cup. As things stand, they are not part of the list of standby players, which currently includes Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar, though India – like the other teams – have until October 15 to make changes to their final squad for the competition.Related

  • Umran Malik to stay back in UAE as net bowler for India's T20 World Cup campaign

  • Avesh Khan wants to be a bowler who can produce what his captain wants

Avesh had travelled with India to England earlier this year after a series of starring performances for Delhi Capitals in the first leg of the IPL. But he had to return home after injuring his thumb during a tour game, and while he has been on the fringes of the national team, Iyer’s inclusion in the list of “net bowlers” came as a bit of a surprise, primarily because while he bowls seam-up, it is as an opening batter for Kolkata Knight Riders that he has made a name.Iyer, a Madhya Pradesh player who made his List A and T20 debuts in 2015 and then his first-class debut in 2018, has been one of the finds of the second leg of the IPL in the UAE, where he has been a big performer, especially with the bat at the top of the order for Knight Riders. He has so far scored 265 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 123.25. He has also picked up three wickets in 7.3 overs – including 2 for 29 in a league match against Delhi Capitals – while returning an economy rate of 8.53.Avesh Khan is the Delhi Capitals’ leading wicket-taker in IPL 2021•BCCI

Avesh, meanwhile, has continued to be one of the stars for Capitals, and is their leading wicket-taker by far: 23 in 15 games with an economy rate of 7.50, eight strikes ahead of second-placed Axar Patel, who has 15.The third member of the net bowlers’ line-up, Malik, has been another outsider to have turned heads at the ongoing IPL, primarily because of his pace and ability to crank it up to above 150kph regularly. The 21-year-old Jammu & Kashmir rookie was promoted from net bowler to the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad proper after T Natarajan had to miss the second leg of the IPL because of Covid-19-related issues. A rank newbie, Malik was included in the XI for Sunrisers’ last three games, after the team had been knocked out of the competition, and he impressed with his pace, even though he didn’t end up picking up too many wickets – just two – and has tended to be a bit wayward at times. All the India players have been in the UAE for the past few weeks because of the IPL, and will get together in time for their first warm-up game, against Australia on October 18, three days after the completion of the IPL. Their second and final, warm-up game is against South Africa on October 20, and they will kickstart their campaign in the main tournament on October 24, against Pakistan.

Pandey ton keeps game open

File photo: Manish Pandey finally broke his century drought with an attacking hundred•Fotocorp

If the quarter-final had been a league game, we would have been set for a dull fourth and final day with Saurashtra looking to bat out time. Instead, the additional day in the knock-outs has led both captains to call the game “still open” though Saurashta have gained a 73-run first-innings advantage, thanks again to their spinners who have taken the majority of the wickets for them this season.Karnataka’s Manish Pandey finally broke his century drought with a stylish, attacking hundred, but when you are looking to overhaul 469 you need more than one batsman to score big. Both openers Robin Uthappa and KL Rahul promised much, but neither could go on to really hurt Saurashtra.Uthappa made his ninth score above 40 this Ranji season, but is still searching for his second hundred of the campaign. He began with three crisply off-driven boundaries in one Chirag Jani over and Saurashtra looked to tie him down by getting the spinners to bowl at his pads and keeping three men close in on the leg-side. He avoided that trap and confidently progressed to 60 off 65 deliveries before he gloved a Jaidev Unadkat delivery that kicked up from a length to the keeper.Rahul had been subdued when Uthappa was finding the rope, but he too showed off some of his shots after the first wicket. His initial few boundaries came mainly on the off side, but he also played several sweeps off the spinners to move to his half-century. He gave it away soon after, though, as he chipped a pitched-up delivery to mid-on. He knew it was a bad mistake, shaking his head much of the way to the dressing room. The season’s highest run-getter CM Gautam, who has been Karnataka’s rock this season, was promoted to No. 4, ahead of Pandey. He couldn’t repeat the heroics of recent months though, and was out lbw for 4 after missing a sweep. Karnataka were 154 for 4 in the first session and looking at a massive deficit.Pandey changed that though. Even with the wickets tumbling, and men crowding the bat, he didn’t rein in his shots. There were plenty of drives past mid-off and just before lunch he muscled a six over long-on. His attacking mindset was highlighted by his running between the wickets as he pushed his partners for the extra run – one of his late cuts even fetched him a rare all-run four. The one serious moment of trouble early in his innings came when he was on 24, bowler Kamlesh Makvana seemed to have palmed the ball onto the stumps and the third umpire was needed to decide whether he was back in his crease. The other genuine chance came only when he was in his 130s, when a loft to long-off was pouched by the fielder Aarpit Vasavada, who stepped over the rope as he completed the catch. There were supporting cameos from Amit Verma and Abhimanyu Mithun to help Pandey prevent Karnataka from slipping to a hopeless situation. The trio of spinners -Makvana, Dharmendrasingh Jadeja and Vishal Joshi – didn’t get any sharp turn from the wicket, but bowled accurately to beat the bat several times, prompting plenty of appeals either for caught-behind or bat-pad. Verma, who has struggled for form this time, survived an over with four appeals from Jadeja. After some initial patience, he whacked Jadeja for a six and a four over midwicket before nicking a catch to the keeper in the same over. That 80-run stand had still just helped Karnataka avoid the follow-on, and their only specialist batsman remaining was Pandey. K Gowtham perished to the first of two athletic low catches at long-on, but Mithun proved more difficult to dislodge. He was initially content to work the ball off his pads towards fine leg but showed his growing confidence by punching Undakat down the ground for four. With the partnership swelling to 80 despite umpteen appeals – Jadeja had his heads on his head in frustration plenty of times in the final session – and Saurashtra’s lead dwindling to double-digits, there was an outside chance of Karnataka taking the first-innings honours.Jadeja, who played a starring role in his debut game last week to help Saurashtra qualify, delivered again late in the day, first trapping Mithun lbw and then knocking over KP Appanna’s off stump. With the last man in, Pandey had to go for his shots and he holed out to Unadkat at long-on, to spark joyous celebrations from the Saurashtra camp. The odd ball is bouncing unpredictably and the pitch is expected to wear significantly over the next two days, which means Saurashtra still have work to do to book their semi-final spot.

No decision yet on Pakistan's base

The final decision over the whether to move the Pakistan women’s team base for the forthcoming Women’s World Cup out of Mumbai, fearing protests by political outfits, hangs in the balance

Nagraj Gollapudi and Umar Farooq15-Jan-2013

It is understood that the tournament organisers have been thinking of an alternate venue as a safeguard for Pakistan’s players•International Cricket Council

The final decision over the whether to move the Pakistan women’s team base for the forthcoming Women’s World Cup out of Mumbai, fearing protests by political outfits, hangs in the balance. At the end of the BCCI Working Committee meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday, BCCI president N Srinivasan did not reveal anything concrete except saying that the board had passed the relevant information to the ICC. “We have informed the ICC about it. They will have to examine it and take a view,” he said. The PCB has written to the ICC, asking it to take responsibility of the security of the Pakistan squad. “We have written to the ICC asking it to ensure the Pakistan team get a foolproof security after the hockey incidents,” PCB spokesperson Nadeem Sarwar told ESPNcricinfo. The PCB has also requested if the organsiers could shift the venue for the Pakistan matches.”The World Cup will be played at four venues across Mumbai, from January 31 to February 17. Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, MIG Ground and the Bandra-Kurla Complex ground are the four venues. Pakistan, who are in Group B, are scheduled to play their league matches against Australia (January 31), New Zealand (February 3) and South Africa (February 5).However, it is understood that the tournament organisers have been thinking of an alternate venue as a safeguard, though no final venue has been decided. “We have not written anything to the ICC asking or informing them about any change of venue. We have just made them aware of what the ground situation is here in Mumbai in a few e-mail exchanges,” a board official told ESPNcricinfo. According to him, a final word on the change of venue should be decided in the next two days.On Sunday, the Shiv Sena activists held protests outside the Bombay Hockey Association Stadium, (which incidentally is adjacent to the Wankhede Stadium) opposing the presence of four Pakistan hockey players in the Mumbai Magicians’ squad in the recently launched Hockey India League. Though the team moved immediately to New Delhi, some Sena activists reached the practice venue in the Indian capital to cause further disruptions. The Sena went public about its intentions, saying it would not allow any Pakistan artistes to perform in Mumbai. “I don’t want to reveal our plans, but you already know of our policy. The Sena will not allow any artiste or sportsperson from Pakistan to perform or play in the city. That country is waging a proxy war against us. There’s no way we will allow them in Mumbai,” senior party leader Subhash Desai told on Monday. The BCCI, understandably, feels the protests could escalate to a higher level considering it is hosting a world event. “This being a World Cup, it will attract a little more attention from political outfits like Shiv Sena. With regards the hockey issue only few hockey players were involved but we are talking now about an entire Pakistan women’s squad,” the official said.Asked if the ICC had raised any concerns, the official said the final decision would have to be taken by India, the host country. “Any decision will be taken here rather than the ICC. It will be a BCCI decision if there is a shift of venue. The only decision when the ICC will get involved in would be in the extreme scenario of Pakistan pulling out of the tournament. But that happening is quite remote,” the official said. The ICC has been monitoring the situation but is happy to wait for the BCCI to deliver the final decision. “Safety and security of the players and ICC officials is always our priority and we constantly monitor and review every situation,” an ICC spokesperson said.
