Favourites Australia eye elusive crown

Overview

With 5934 runs from 214 matches, Brad Hodge, at 39, is the leading run-scorer in Twenty20 cricket•Getty Images

The list of trophies won by Australia over the years is long and impressive, but there is one conspicuous absence. For all their success in World Cups, Champions Trophy tournaments and Test cricket, the World T20 has eluded them. Of course the history of the event is short, stretching back only as far as 2007, but the lack of a title in any of the four editions so far staged bothers the Australians. They enter the 2014 tournament with their best chance yet and, according to most reputable betting companies, as the favourites. It is a favouritism based in part on their recent form against England and South Africa but as much on their batting strength as anything. David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Brad Hodge, George Bailey, Cameron White, Brad Haddin, Glenn Maxwell – that’s some pretty impressive depth. The absence of Mitchell Johnson due to injury will hurt them, although Mitchell Starc has developed into one of the finest fast bowlers in T20 cricket, and James Faulkner offers an important all-round option. In the early days of the World T20, Australia’s selectors did not grant the format due respect and assumed the one-day team would do the job. Over time, and with a new selection panel in place, the Australians have realised that to win this event they will need proven T20 performers, regardless of age.Initially T20 seemed a young man’s game; now it is recognised that older types in the twilight of their careers may just have the experience and wiles required. Hence the presence of 43-year-old Brad Hogg, 39-year-old Hodge and 36-year-old Haddin in this squad.”We’ve got the most balanced side that I’ve ever been involved with and a balanced squad,” said Watson, who is the only Australian to have been part of the squads for all five World T20s, including this one. “I think the versatility of this squad (is) more than any squad that I’ve played Twenty20 cricket for Australia. Certainly in all conditions against any opposition we can match up really well, I think it gives us more of a chance to be able win it.”

Key player

With Warner and Watson to occupy two of Australia’s top three batting spots, you would think the other man in that trio might fly under the radar. Except that Aaron Finch enters the tournament as the newly-crowned No.1-ranked T20 international batsman in the world. Last year, Finch smashed the record for the highest score in a T20 international when he plundered 156 against England in Southampton and his clean striking and ability to consistently clear the fence makes him as exciting a player as there is in this Australian squad.

Surprise package

The catalogue of T20 teams Brad Hodge has played for is almost as long and impressive as Australia’s trophy list. Surely nobody can be shocked by the presence of Twenty20 cricket’s all-time leading run scorer at this tournament? Well, yes, the inclusion of Hodge was a surprise to many people, not least Hodge himself.Often overlooked by the national selectors during his heyday, Hodge had long since written off his international career when he was recalled in January at 39. But his T20 experience, including in Bangladesh with the Barisal Burners, encouraged the selectors to take a punt. His Man-of-the-Match effort in the second T20 in South Africa this month suggested it might have been a good call.

Weakness

The Australians like the ball coming on to the bat and in the group stage they will face three teams strong on spin options – Pakistan, West Indies and India. There is also the question of whether their own slow bowling will be good enough. Hogg has experience but with the raw legspinner James Muirhead and the part-timer Glenn Maxwell as his main support in spinning conditions, they do look a little thin in that department.

World T20 history

They might not have won the trophy yet but in three of the four World T20s so far, Australia have made it to at least the semi-final stage. England beat them in the decider in 2010 and last time they were bundled out by eventual champions West Indies in a semi-final. Their low point was the 2009 tournament, when they failed to make it past the group stage.

Recent form

Australia are five from five this year after beating England 3-0 and South Africa 2-0. There could hardly be a better time to hit their peak. But it was only this summer that things started turning around for Bailey’s men – from the end of the previous World T20 until the games against England, their record was LLLWLL.

Big PictureRoyal Challengers Bangalore have made one of their best starts to the tournament by winning their first two matches comprehensively and with the likely return of Chris Gayle, who missed the first two games due to a sore back, they will look to keep up with the marauding Kings XI Punjab at the top of the table. But Kolkata Knight Riders, the team that gave Royal Challengers a historic mauling on that fateful night six years ago at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, do have a decent spanner, in the form of their bowling attack, to throw in Royal Challengers’ works. How Sunil Narine and Co bowl to the glitzy batting stars could well define the outcome of the match. Although the trio of Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and AB de Villiers have all had one good innings under their belts, Narine has the ability to run through line-ups like he did in the first game against Mumbai Indians and other Knight Riders bowlers have a wealth of experience at this level. In fact, the bowler who has taken most wickets in Knight Riders v Royal Challengers matches – Vinay Kumar, 13 – has switched sides to move east. The odds, though, are still in favour of Royal Challengers given Knight Riders’ unreliable batting order.Like The Dakar, the Indian Premier League is a long and gruelling race and it is just entering its second and last week of the desert phase. Where teams stand at the end of the league stage may still be decided by what happens in India in the month of May, but it won’t hurt to make the most of what is on offer in the Gulf.Watch out for …While their batting line-up almost always hogs the attention, Royal Challengers’ bowlers have had a solid part to play in the team’s victories. In 40 overs, they have given away 260 runs, which means they are the most economical attack so far. The man leading their bowling charts is Yuzvendra Chahal, the young legspinner from Haryana. He has had a good start to the tournament but can he keep up the consistency?Gautam Gambhir was the pillar of Knight Riders’ title win in the 2012, but with two ducks in two matches, he has often left the team in peril. Luckily for him, two of the team’s fresh domestic recruits have hit the ground running, but as the past results have shown, the team’s fortunes are intertwined with Gambhir’s batting form.Stats and trivia In the first two matches, Parthiv Patel has hit more boundaries than the combined number for the rest of the Royal Challegers batting line-up Knight Riders have won six out of their 12 matches against Royal Challengers

'Suryakumar could play for India one day' – Sehwag

A round-up of IPL news on May 8, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff08-May-2014Virender Sehwag has said Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Suryakumar Yadav has the talent to play for India in the future.”More than the batsmen, it’s the bowlers,” Sehwag told , when asked which players have impressed him during this IPL season. “Sandeep Sharma and Mohit Sharma are the two guys who have impressed me the most. As far as batsmen are concerned, I really like the look of Suryakumar Yadav. He seems like a very good talent and if he continues to focus, he has the ability to score a lot of runs in the future and also maybe play for India one day.”I like the fact that Sandeep can swing the ball in as well as take it away. Also, he has tremendous control over his bowling. For us, he has been very vital because he gives us early breakthroughs, in the first or second over, which is very important in this format.”‘Opening is my bread and butter’ – UthappaSince moving up to the top of the order, Robin Uthappa has been in roaring form, his three innings as opener bringing him scores of 47, 65 and 47 at a strike rate of 128.23. Uthappa says he told the Kolkata Knight Riders team management he was at his most comfortable while opening the batting, and they gave him the opportunity to do so.”I am loving it!” he told , when asked about the move up the order. “It is where I feel at home; that is my bread and butter. So, I just love opening the batting. I think that’s where I do the best and that is something I was telling the support staff and Gautam, and I had a conversation with them about it. I am glad that they gave me an opportunity and that I have been able to utilise that opportunity in a way that has been meaningful for the team.”‘Bowlers should work on outwitting batsmen’ – SrinathJavagal Srinath says bowlers are becoming too dependent on batsmen’s mistakes to get their wickets, and aren’t able to outwit them on their own.”What concerns me is the fact that the wicket-taking ability of a bowler is now directly linked to batsmen making mistakes in their desire to look for big scores,” he writes, in his column for the . “I think it is about time the bowlers started to think harder on what they can do not only to restrict the scoring, but also pick up wickets.”So where do the bowlers go from here? That is the challenge ahead of the specialist coaches and the sports psychologist who travel with most teams. It’s time for them to focus on giving bowlers confidence and in coming up with something that will help their discipline. Unlike batsmen, bowlers are a lot more apprehensive about what the day holds. Agreed that at the end of the day, it’s the wickets that matter, but there is a huge difference between a batsman getting himself out and a bowler outwitting a batsman.”

Need to try players before World Cup – Raina

Suresh Raina, the India captain, was swift to defend the squad he has been charged with for the three ODIs against Bangladesh

Alagappan Muthu in Dhaka14-Jun-2014Suresh Raina, the India captain, was swift to defend the squad he has been charged with for the three ODIs against Bangladesh. Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu and Amit Mishra are the only ones in the squad to have played in India’s last 50-over game against a Full Member, but Raina stressed the selectors had to consider India’s calendar ahead.”I don’t think they took the series lightly. The England tour is coming up and so few of the players are rested,” Raina said. “If you look at the side, all the players have done well in the IPL and first-class cricket. The World Cup is coming up and you need to try a lot of players. I think it is a good opportunity for youngsters to do really well in this series and see how it goes in upcoming matches.”I think the Bangladesh captain said we are coming with the A team. We are playing between two countries. It’s really important for us to play fearless cricket. A lot of our players have done really well and I think the series is a good platform, to cement their places in the team.”And there are vacancies to be targeted. India look settled at the top of an innings, but the middle order is far from decided. The space between Virat Kohli at No.3 and MS Dhoni at No. 6 courts several contenders. Cheteshwar Pujara will try to convince the selectors of his fluency in limited-overs cricket. Raina will look to regain some trust after a lean spell. Ajinkya Rahane will want to mend his iffy strike-rate of 68.78 in 10 innings batting between Nos. 3 and 7. Ambati Rayudu will hunt for the innings that makes people stand up and take notice and Manoj Tiwary will need to prove his fitness as much as his talent.During a practice session, Duncan Fletcher, the coach, conveyed he would like five minutes with all the new guys. Two of them were in the middle of batting practice. Kedar Jadhav, another contender in the middle-order scrum, was having good success smothering a spinner, a healthy skill to manoeuvre runs without taking too much risk. Beside him, Tiwary was punching through the covers and lofting down the ground. Clarity at the crease was what he wanted – going right back or right forward.”When I was out of the squad, it was because of my knee injury and not poor form,” Tiwary had said. “Just before that I had scored a hundred for India A against Australia. So once I was match-fit, I knew my time would come.” His belief has paid off, but the management will now demand performance. After two years in the wilderness due to a spate of injuries, he will want that for himself. In the adjoining net, Pujara was trying to gain a leg up in the race, polishing his bowling skills. He ran up sedately and landed a loopy legspinner on middle and off. As the batsman defended, Pujara willed his wrists to impart greater rip. He got back to his mark and the process continued – the odd and exaggerated roll of the wrist and flighted deliveries on middle – until the end of training.Pujara has been eager to assist India’s plans for 2015 and had advertised an interest in bowling to help gain a permanent spot in the XI. His control was promising but not threatening and the effort he put in epitomised what his captain desired.”Some players are coming back to the Indian team, some are getting their chance to play. It’s important to stick to together,” Raina said. “It is a short tour for us, seven days, three one-dayers and no gaps in between. You have to plan very well and work really hard.”The lure of a defining World Cup performance had been party to curtailing Jacques Kallis’ Test career. VVS Laxman’s regret over not being able to participate in one is also common knowledge. All 15 players were mindful of avoiding that situation, even as the afternoon sun blazed away.

I've got no time for Pollard – Starc

A round-up of IPL news on May 17, 2014

Kieron Pollard is unlikely to be on Mitchell Starc’s Christmas card list•BCCI

I’ve got no time for Pollard – Starc
The hatchet has not been buried between Royal Challengers Bangalore fast bowler Mitchell Starc and Mumbai Indians allrounder Kieron Pollard, who were fined for their ugly on-field spat at the Wankhede Stadium. Speaking to the , Starc said he had not talked to Pollard at all after the incident. “Kieron’s done that a lot in the past and I don’t think it’s worth talking about,” he said. “No, I’ve got no time for Pollard and I haven’t talked to him at all.””That sort of situation would probably warrant yellow and red cards if it ever does come to that. But I’m definitely staying out of that sort of thing anyway. It’s not in my nature to get involved in that sort of stuff. It was a heat-of-the-moment thing.”Hussey hopes to fill in for McCullum
Australia batsman David Hussey was a late signing by Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo, but he is likely to get a chance to play when New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum returns home for the birth of his child, which could rule him out of games on May 22 and 24. “The talk started a while ago, actually, with Dwayne Bravo having a sore shoulder,” Hussey told . “So, Stephen Fleming rang me and asked if I would be interested in playing. I was lucky enough to be here commentating, and now, I can’t wait to play. I have sort of spoken to Fleming and he said that I will be a middle-order player, and with Brendon McCullum due to go home for the birth of his baby, I’ll definitely get an opportunity to play.”CSK team official Russell Radhakrishnan told : “We have booked tickets for Brendon to fly out of India on May 21 and return on the 25th. His wife is expecting around that time, and if he leaves for home, he will miss two matches.”You don’t have to have magic in T20s – Murali
Former Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who is playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, says even ordinary Test spinners can be successful in T20 cricket because they don’t need to “buy wickets” in the shortest format. “You will get wickets if you bowl tight.” Murali told . “You don’t have to be a big spinner, you don’t have to have magic in T20s but you have to have magic in Test cricket to take wickets, to some extent even in one-day cricket.”Your mindset has to change. In Test cricket you have to buy wickets. You can’t keep on bowling maiden overs and waiting, because you won’t be successful. You have to have some tricks; you have to flight the ball, have variations. Test cricket teaches you so many things.”

O'Brien signing reflects Surrey strength

Squad rotation is a reality that modern football has become well acquainted with. To most counties, their meagre playing resources make that notion an unimaginable luxury.Surrey are different. On a day limited to 17 deliveries – Surrey’s quest for a second Championship win since September 2012 will resume on Wednesday – they provided another reminder of their financial strength by signing Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien. It adds lustre to their Twenty20 batting line-up ahead of their tournament opener at Hove on Friday night. But it is in pace bowling that Surrey’s resources are most plentiful and where resting players is a luxury they can afford. While Tom Curran, Matt Dunn, Tim Linley and Chris Tremlett illustrated their contrasting qualities to take 20 Gloucestershire wickets for only 398 in this game, Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker were rested with the NatWest Blast in mind. Add in George Edwards and Surrey, for all their plight near the foot of Division Two in the Championship, have seven pace bowlers with strong claims. The club’s approach to managing these talents evokes Claudio “The Tinkerman” Ranieri’s selection policy at Chelsea a decade ago. “You generally try and get your quick bowlers to play between ten and twelve games each, so that when they play they’re fresh and when they’re just lagging a bit you can leave them out and someone else can come in fresh,” Surrey’s director of cricket – and Chelsea fan – Alec Stewart explained after the first day. “That’s how we try and do it with the bowling resources.”Tremlett is among those who should benefit. “That’s the joy of having a big squad,” he said. “I don’t want to put my body under too much stress.”In other positions, the need for rotation is less pressing. Behind the stumps, Gary Wilson, who has deposed Niall O’Brien as Ireland wicketkeeper, will be in no mood to relinquish the responsibilities that he has gained while Steven Davies works on his batting.Stewart warned Davies that, “No one has a divine right to say ‘I’m a keeper therefore I keep’. It’s how the selectors feel.” Wilson strengthened his case with impressive keeping in both innings against Gloucestershire, which was not reflected in a match total of 25 byes. With rain dominating the day, Wilson had the chance to welcome his compatriot Kevin O’Brien. In the spirit of the age, he tweeted a selfie, though one imagines that it resonated rather less far than David Cameron’s attempt at Nelson Mandela’s funeral last year. O’Brien is expected to be available for nine games before he heads to the Caribbean: such is the life of the nomadic cricketer. The lack of regular team-mates is “probably one of the hardest things to get used to” but O’Brien said that it was “easier when you come back and you know the guys in the changing room”. He made a big impression in very little time last season, relishing the short boundaries to the Mound and Tavern stands in scything a 24-ball 54 at Lord’s.That innings was from No. 4, though it is opening – as when smiting a century for Gloucestershire in 2011 – that O’Brien prefers. “It’s the best time to bat in Twenty20,” he said. “You’ve got an opportunity to face the most balls.” It is expected that O’Brien will be used in the middle order, with Graeme Smith, Jason Roy, Steven Davies and – once his IPL commitments are done – Kevin Pietersen at the top.It all promises no shortage of razzmatazz. Surrey’s challenge to win this game is more mundane but, against a Gloucestershire attack who bowled them out for 132 in their first innings, no less challenging for that.
