Newcastle eye up young English pair

Newcastle United, and by extension club owners PIF, are interested in signing Chelsea attackers Conor Gallagher and Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer, journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed.

The Lowdown: Relatively low-key summer

The Magpies’ newfound wealth has made the headlines in the past nine months or so, following their big-money takeover that went through late last year.

While many were expecting Newcastle to spend a huge amount of funds on new signings this summer, things have been fairly serene, with Sven Botman (£33.3m) the most expensive arrival.

There are still a few weeks remaining in the transfer window, however, and a fresh update suggests more incomings could be heading to St James’ Park.

The Latest: Newcastle eye up Chelsea pair

Taking to Twitter, Jacobs claimed that Newcastle are keen on signing Chelsea duo Gallagher and Hudson-Odoi before deadline day ends.

“#NUFC interested in Conor Gallagher and considering Callum Hudson-Odoi.”

The Verdict: Two shrewd additions

This is exactly the sort of business Newcastle should be looking to do, with Gallagher and Hudson-Odoi both hugely exciting young players who could strengthen Eddie Howe’s side significantly.

[freshpress-poll id=“404554″]

Neither are looking like key starters for Chelsea, so the Blues would surely be happy to sell them on loan, while the players themselves would likely jump at the chance of being regulars elsewhere. For that reason, it feels like an ideal scenario for all parties.

Gallagher was superb on loan at Crystal Palace last season, scoring eight times in the Premier League, while Hudson-Odoi’s pace and trickery out wide could give Newcastle an extra dimension, with the 21-year-old potentially comes as an alternative to Allan Saint-Maximin.

Newcastle tipped to consider Jonathan David

A claim has emerged on Newcastle United and who they could attempt to sign in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Dean Jones has suggested that the Magpies could potentially move for Lille centre-forward Jonathan David, or a similar player, if they miss out on other targets.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I do wonder if they might go for Jonathan David or somebody like that if these ones don’t work out.

“I think he’ll probably be a bit more expensive, but there’s obviously a mould that they’re trying to fit in within Newcastle, but also they don’t want to spend that much money if they do end up splashing out.”

It has been reported that the Ligue 1 club value him at around €50m (£42m) and he was linked with a move to Newcastle earlier this year.

Callum Wilson alternative

By snapping up a deal to sign the Canada international this summer, Newcastle could finally find the alternative to Callum Wilson that they have been crying out for.

The English striker has proven that he has the quality to be a regular goalscorer when he is on the pitch, but his injury issues are a huge cause for concern.

Since arriving at Newcastle in 2020, he has scored 21 goals and provided five assists in 41 Premier League starts for the Magpies. However, he has also missed 35 matches in all competitions in that time through six knocks.

This suggests that he is not a striker Eddie Howe can rely upon over the course of an entire campaign and the club attempted to fix that problem by signing Chris Wood in January.

That move is yet to show any sign of working out as he has scored two goals – one from open play – in 19 Premier League matches so far.

In Jonathan David, Newcastle could find a striker capable of pushing Wilson for his place and having the quality to be an adequate alternative to the Englishman if he suffers any injuries.

He was once dubbed “fearless” by his national team coach John Herdman and journalist Musa Okwonga previously called him an “emerging superstar”, with his statistics backing up that claim.

In Ligue 1 last season, the 22-year-old managed 15 goals in 32 starts for Lille as he showed that he has the ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis at the top level, after scoring 13 goals in 29 starts in 2020/21. He has also started the current campaign on fire with two goals and two assists in two appearances in the French top-flight.

The club’s previous interest in him suggests that they feel he would suit Howe’s style of play and his statistics in France make him look, on paper, to be a dream target to bring in as an alternative to Wilson.

He is also eight years younger than Wood and has the potential to bring far more goals to the team, given their respective goalscoring returns, which is why the club should now look to the young talent this month.

Journalist drops to Delap to Burnley claim

LancsLive journalist Alex James has shared what he knows about Burnley’s pursuit of Manchester City striker Liam Delap.

The Lowdown: Plenty of interest

The highly-rated 19-year-old has worked his way up through the ranks at the Etihad, but Pep Guardiola’s side now want to send him out on loan to further his development and gain some valuable first-team experience.

Several clubs have been linked with a move for the forward, including Southampton and Newcastle United, but reports suggested that both approaches had been turned down, with City only willing to let him leave on a temporary basis rather than permanently.

It’s believed that the top-flight giants would prefer their starlet – who Guardiola called ‘special’ – to have a loan in the Championship, with both the Clarets and Stoke City name-checked as potential suitors.

The Latest: Delap latest

Taking to Twitter, James insisted that Burnley are likely to still be in search of a new attacker, and said they could even be ‘favourites’ for Delap’s signature. He wrote:

“Delap an interesting one as you sense he’s likely to end up on loan in the Championship and on the face of it Burnley would be favourites given style, Kompany etc. Will see what if I can find out a bit more detail this week. For me, Burnley still need a striker.”

The Verdict: Game-changing signing for Burnley

Delap is a very sought-after player, and the proof is in the pudding given he managed to make ten goal contributions in the same number of Premier League 2 games last term, via Transfermarkt, missing some of the season through injury.

Trying to fend off competitors for his services won’t be an easy job, but Vincent Kompany already has existing connections to City from his time at the club, so this could play a significant role in any possible deal getting finalised.

If Burnley were to be the ones to land him, it would be a massive coup for the Clarets and a signing that could be enough to help take them back up to the top-flight.

Southampton receive approach for Adams

According to The Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath, Southampton have received an approach from an unnamed Premier League side for striker Che Adams.

The Lowdown: Saints ready to sanction exit

The 26-year-old still has two years remaining on his deal at the St. Mary’s Stadium, but it’s recently been reported that the Saints are willing to listen to offers for him this summer, with a switch away from the south coast now looking possible.

Several clubs, including Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, are believed to be interested in securing the forward’s signature this window, and after a fresh update, it sounds like someone has already made the first official move.

The Latest: Southampton receive approach

Taking to Twitter, McGrath confirmed that Southampton have been the recipient of an enquiry for Adams, though it’s yet unknown as to who that might be. He wrote:

“Southampton have received approach for Che Adams from a Premier League club. Interest in the Scotland striker from a number of teams. Nottingham Forest among those looking at him but there are others.”

The Verdict: The Mara effect

Ralph Hasenhuttl has recently signed French striker Sekou Mara from Bordeaux, and whilst he’s entitled to want cover and competition up top, you would imagine that this only pushes Adams even closer to the exit door.

The Scottish international only made 23 PL starts for the Saints last season, suggesting that the Austrian doesn’t see him as a major part of his long-term plans, especially considering the club are now seemingly open to sanctioning his departure.

Kyle Walker-Peters is another player whose name has recently been linked with an exit, so Southampton will have to decide if they are willing to lose two of their first-team players in one go.

West Brom miss out on Liam Delap

West Bromwich Albion have missed out on securing a deal for Manchester City striker and reported Baggies target Liam Delap.

What’s the news?

In a Twitter post, The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed that Stoke City had agreed a deal to sign the player on loan for the remainder of the season.

He said: “Stoke City have reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign Liam Delap on loan. Deal until summer 2023, no buy option. Medical taking place today [Wednesday]. Huge interest in 19yo England youth international but SCFC have won race.”

Indeed, the news was then confirmed by Stoke’s official channels on Thursday lunchtime.

Baggies manager Steve Bruce recently spoke about his eagerness to sign the Englishman and had this to say on the matter.

“Who wouldn’t be [interested]? We’ll see. Me and everybody else too [are interested]. He’s an outstanding talent. We’ve got huge competition.

“He’s a young player that everybody up and down the country would love to have in their team.”

This shows just how much of a hot prospect the player is and how much of an asset Bruce thinks he would be for his team at the top of the pitch.

A big blow for West Brom

With 68 appearances to his name for the Manchester club across their senior and youth teams, the 19-year-old has 48 goals and 16 assists under his belt, highlighting the clear potential he has in terms of being a regular goalscorer.

The Baggies have recently lost Daryl Dike to injury and failed to manage even one shot on target during their recent 0-0 draw against Cardiff City so there is clearly a need to bring in a new striker before the transfer window closes on September 1st. It also shows why missing out on Delap is such a big setback for the Baggies.

Having also missed out on securing a loan deal for Keinan Davis, who joined Watford after being linked with a move to the Hawthorns, this latest blow regarding Delap will leave another bitter taste in the mouths of everyone at West Brom.

With deadline day fast approaching, the Midlands club will have to move on from the City youngster and focus on other potential targets they could look to bring in before then.

If Albion end up not being able to bring a new forward in over the next couple of weeks, this would surely have a negative impact on the club’s chances of securing promotion back to the Premier League, especially if they keep being as ineffective in front of goal as they were in midweek.

Thus, Delap would have been an outstanding acquisition with his goal record providing evidence of a player who will surely take to Championship football like a duck to water.

Forest have bid rejected for Gibbs-White

Nottingham Forest made Morgan Gibbs-White a transfer target this summer, and a new update has emerged on the club’s pursuit of the player from a reliable source.

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic’s Wolverhampton Wanderers reporter Steve Madeley, the Reds have had another bid rejected for the midfielder.

As per Madeley’s report for The Athletic, Forest have been knocked back yet again by Wolves, who claim that the player is not for sale and are preparing themselves for another bid to be submitted worth around £30m.

Evangelos Marinakis has intervened in negotiations and held discussions with senior figures at Molineux, and it is reported that the young talent is the number one target for Forest, who will continue to pursue the player over the transfer window.

Cooper must act fast

There is no doubt that the new knockback in their efforts to secure a deal for Gibbs-White will be frustrating for the powerbrokers at the City Ground, but it is clear from Madeley’s update that Forest have no intentions of cooling their interest in the player.

The 22-year-old has been going from strength to strength in his career, and most recently caught the eye with his impressive loan spell at Sheffield United last season in the Championship.

Gibbs-White scored 11 goals, delivered nine assists and created 16 big chances, making 1.6 key passes and 0.7 tackles and winning 4.9 duels per game over 35 appearances for the Blades, and his impact on the team led to the young talent being named Player of the Year at Bramall Lane.

The 22-year-old’s performances did not go unnoticed, especially by those who came up against him in the Championship last term.

Barnsley head coach Poya Asbaghi hailed Gibbs-White following the Tykes’ defeat at Sheffield United last season, saying: “He’s a really good player. I think Sheffield United have a lot of good players, but he is the most outstanding one.”

Steve Cooper, who has worked with Gibbs-White in the England under-17s and at Swansea City, has the experience with the player to get the very best out of him; and if the midfielder can emulate his form of last season in the Premier League, the Reds could strike gold in their pursuit to retain their top-flight status.

As a result, the Forest manager must act fast to negotiate a deal for the talented midfielder, as Wolves could find themselves even more reluctant to sell Gibbs-White if he puts in an impressive performance in the Premier League should he be selected to play this weekend.

Saints suffer injury blow ahead of Leeds

Southampton have endured a very difficult start to the new Premier League season and have suffered another setback ahead of their home game against Leeds United this weekend.

Following their 4-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, the Saints sit bottom of the Premier League, and rumours of unrest at the club have quickly surfaced.

It has been reported that manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has lost the dressing room, with a number of players surprised that the Austrian was able to keep his job after a shocking end to the 2021/22 campaign.

The former RB Leipzig boss opted to deploy a five-at-the-back formation against Spurs, with Yan Valery a surprising choice at centre-back.

Unfortunately for the Saints, Hasenhuttl’s gamble did not pay off as they shipped four goals, meaning they sit bottom of the Premier League ahead of the visit of Leeds United.

The Austrian confirmed in his pre-match conference that Brazilian centre-back Lyanco will miss the game against Jesse Marsch’s side, in what is another blow to Southampton’s chances.

He said:

“We had only Lyanco during the week not training with the team because he had a problem with his knee.”

Since joining from Torino last summer, the 25-year-old has made 18 appearances for the Saints, and with Hasenhuttl opting for a five-at-the-back, there are likely to be more opportunities for the defender this season.

Hasenhuttl was full of praise for the Brazilian last season after a 1-0 win against Aston Villa last season, saying:

“This guy is a fantastic character.

“You see how he was celebrating his first Premier League game and now again he is happy, you know how much it means to him to play for us.

“This is exactly the kind of player we want in our team.”

However, he will be without the centre-back as the Saints look to turn their fortunes around on Saturday, and not having him available in defence will undoubtedly come as a blow to the Austrian, especially when you consider how defensively poor they were against Spurs.

Tottenham: Conte without Skipp after pre-Chelsea update

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte will be without midfielder Oliver Skipp as he prepares to face Chelsea this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Spurs start brightly…

Spurs have started this 2022/2023 Premier League campaign very brightly as they seek to build upon a fantastic end to last season.

Conte guided the Lilywhites to a top four finish and subsequent Champions League qualification, prompting club owners ENIC to invest their complete faith in the Italian and grant a £150 million equity increase.

Sporting director Fabio Paratici has put these funds to good use, completing six major summer signings in the form of Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence.

A 4-1 opening weekend victory against Southampton followed as the north Londoners kickstarted their ambitious campaign with a convincing win.

The Latest: Skipp unavailable…

In full preparation for their London derby clash against rivals Chelsea today, aiming to maintain the momentum of their Saints thrashing, Conte has been dealt a blow in the form of midfielder Skipp’s availability.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-3/” title=”Tottenham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As relayed by the BBC, Tottenham will be without the 21-year-old for their trip to Stamford Bridge due to a foot injury.

The Verdict: Setback for Conte?

A midfield double pivot of Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg seems to be the most likely solution for Conte in the absence of Skipp and we’re sure the 53-year-old can’t wait to have his starlet back in action.

As per WhoScored, the Englishman averaged a higher pass accuracy than any Spurs regular in the top flight last season and can instil a real degree of composure when allowed.

It’s little wonder Spurs pundits like John Wenham have called him a ‘valuable asset’, not least for his ability but also his potential to be even greater.

Indeed, the sooner Skipp can be called upon again, the sooner he can build upon his exciting start to life as a first-team player in N17.

West Ham: Moyes could move for Pulisic

West Ham United could be interested in a move to bring Christian Pulisic to the London Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to ExWHUemployee, who revealed in a recent post on The West Ham Way (via West Ham Zone) that, with the 23-year-old forward reported to be free to leave Chelsea prior to September’s transfer deadline, David Moyes would be interested in making a move to bring the USA international across to east London in the coming weeks.

However, the Hammers insider went on to suggest that, with the Blues having been very difficult to deal with in the transfer market so far this summer, whether or not Moyes will be successful in his attempts to lure the former Borussia Dortmund talent to the London Stadium remains up in the air at present.

Dream Vlasic replacement

With Nikola Vlasic looking set to end his turbulent year-long spell at West Ham via a loan switch – which includes a €15m (£12.5m) option to buy – to Serie A Torino, it would not be surprising to see Moyes enter the market for a new versatile attacker over the remainder of the summer transfer window.

And, while Pulisic – who can operate on either wing and through the middle – has not exactly set the world alight following his £58m move to Stamford Bridge back in January of 2019, the 23-year-old has shown signs that he could represent something of a dream replacement for the outbound Croatia international.

Indeed, over his 22 Premier League appearances – only 13 of which came as starts – last season, the £37.8m-rated talent scored six goals, registered two assists and created one big chance for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.3 shots, making 0.7 key passes and completing 1.1 dribbles per game.

For comparison, over Vlasic’s 19 league fixtures in 2021/22, the £19.8m-rated forward scored just one goal, provided no assists and created no big chances, as well as taking an average of 0.4 shots, making 0.5 key passes and completing 0.5 dribbles per outing.

As such, it is clear to see that the £150k-per-week forward who Hakim Ziyech dubbed “crazy” would be quite a considerable upgrade upon the £69k-per-week Vlasic, leading us to believe that, should there be a chance of Moyes landing the 50-cap international this summer, he must do all he can to take it.

Newcastle must secure Conor Gallagher deal

Newcastle United have not been shy when it comes to signing players from fellow English clubs in recent years.

One player for whom the Toon shelled out a significant amount of money to sign from a rival Premier League club is Joe Willock.

After originally joining the Magpies on loan from Arsenal in January 2021 January, the midfielder signed for the Tyneside club on a permanent basis when they secured a six-year deal for him worth in excess of £20m.

Overall, the 23-year-old has made 47 appearances in a Newcastle shirt and scored 10 goals in the process.

With the summer transfer window set to close in the next two weeks, this period gives PIF the chance to bring in someone who could be the Toon’s next version of Willock.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Magpies are keen on securing a move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

As another young English midfielder who has worked his way through the youth ranks at one of London’s biggest clubs, this mirrors the journey that Willock had with Arsenal before starting his new chapter at St James’ Park.

To further highlight the similarities between the two midfielders, both players ended up making 69 tackles throughout their 2021/22 domestic campaigns, succeeding with 44 each.

However, Gallagher had more shots at goal, shot-creating actions, crosses and successful dribbles than the current Newcastle midfielder, showing just how dangerous he can be in an attacking sense.

In fact, one of his eight league goals for Crystal Palace, where he spent last season on loan, was hailed as “outrageous” by podcaster Dan Cook on Twitter.

With a reported price tag of £50m, it would certainly take a big investment from PIF to secure a deal for the England international this summer.

Bearing in mind how the midfielder has only played six minutes of league action for the west London club so far this season, a move to Newcastle – where he’d potentially have a better chance of playing regularly – could be a tempting prospect for the 22-year-old.

With all that in mind, landing a deal for Gallagher should be at the top of PIF’s priority list for the remainder of the summer transfer window.
