If the price of a player at the auction reached the $2 million limit, the player’s original franchise would have first right of refusal, provided it was one of the bidders.The BCCI empowered a three-man panel comprising Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi to make recommendations on the structure of the league. Gavaskar said the panel agreed that player retention will hurt Pune and Kochi, the two new franchises, but felt the council should abide by an earlier decision that teams could keep four Indian and three overseas players.The spending limit at the auction would be $8 million, which means the franchises would have to think carefully about players they want to retain. In addition, the total number of players in a squad would be capped at 25, with a restriction on matches a single player can play in order to reduce the risk of burnout. “Since a player could only play 14 matches plus the knockouts, a franchise could play five overseas players in four matches, but not in the knockout stage,” Gavaskar said in an email which was sent to the eight captains of the original franchises. The email was not sent to franchise officials or team owners.The details of IPL 2011 have been shrouded in mystery since the suspension of chairman Lalit Modi in April. The franchise owners had met with BCCI president Shashank Manohar and interim IPL chairman Chirayu Amin on June 24 to exchange their views on next year’s event, after which Pataudi, Shastri and Gavaskar had one-one-meetings with the franchise owners about player retention, salary caps and squad sizes. At the meeting, eight of the franchises voiced their opposition to player retention, while Mumbai and Chennai were in favour of keeping players.Gavaskar said these proposals were put to the full council at a meeting on June 25, but no decision was taken. The issue will now be brought up again at the next council meeting in August.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side did not have a game over the weekend after they were knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round by West Ham United, whilst last time out in this competition, they tasted defeat to Newcastle United.

So the 66-year-old boss will be looking to see some sort of reaction down in the Midlands tonight.

The Yorkshire giants have often struggled in the final third this campaign and that’s largely been due to the absence of last season’s top goalscorer Patrick Bamford, who remains missing through injury.

Without him, the Argentinian has tried an array of options, ranging from youth striker Joe Gelhardt – who Football FanCast have backed to earn a start against Steven Gerrard’s side – to playing a winger out of position like Daniel James.

Well, it’s the latter that he must not do at Villa Park this evening.

The Welshman, who joined in a club-record £30m deal in the summer, has hugely underwhelmed since his move from Manchester United. They must’ve been more than happy to cash in at that absurd figure.

James ranks outside of Bielsa’s top ten best-performing players in the Premier League this season, averaging a seasonal WhoScored rating of 6.54 – only one player who has started 15 or more games has managed worse (Diego Llorente, 6.49).

That is rather telling in itself but the 24-year-old winger has only delivered two goals and one assist.

There are seven more players that are averaging more key passes per game than the summer signing (0.8 per game), whilst his average of two shots per game has not correlated into goals whatsoever.

Ex-Premier League striker turned pundit Darren Bent once summed James up well.

“The only thing about Dan James at times, for me, he’s a little bit headless,” he told Football Insider back in November 2020 – when he was still at Old Trafford.

“He’s shown great potential, when he first went to United he played really well, scored a few goals but at times he for me he’s fouled or he shoots sometimes when he should pass it, he’ll pass when he should shoot.”

That’s just not what you need from someone expected to lead the line and it’s not as if he has the right physical attributes, at 5 foot 7, to truly fill Bamford’s shoes.

Then elsewhere, the £16.2m-rated wide man clearly not cutting it either, as evident by his paltry returns.

As such, it’s time for Bielsa to be ruthless in his team selection and he can do so by axing the lightweight James against Villa this evening.

This isn’t the first time Modi has demanded a change in the panel – he had asked BCCI president Shashank Manohar to recuse himself from the committee, which Manohar duly did.Amin, who was already a member of the disciplinary committee, was appointed the interim chairman of the IPL following Modi’s suspension in April. At a special general body meeting held this past Saturday, the board voted unanimously to refer Modi’s case to the committee.Following the decision, Modi’s lawyers sent a legal notice to the BCCI, claiming that Amin may have a grudge against their client, and should therefore be replaced on the panel. “It was Modi who had disclosed publicly that Amin was an investor who formed a part of the Pune consortium that made an unsuccessful bid for the two franchises this year,” quotes the notice as saying.According to Modi, Amin was part of a consortium led by Pune-based construction company City Corporation that took part in the auction for the two new teams.However, Manohar disputed Modi’s version of events at the time, saying Amin’s intention was to invest in the consortium only in the event of a successful bid, and that it was Modi who had urged the consortium to contact Amin in the first place. “Vlahovic is at the top of the list.

“My information is that they would be prepared to do the deal [in January]. They would be prepared to fund it, and I think Fiorentina would be prepared to cash in on him with 18 months to go and the rejection of a new contract,” he revealed to his own show on The Athletic’s YouTube channel.

“This may be the point in which they can extract maximum value in the remainder of his term but whether he wants to do it now, whether his agent – or is going to play a key role in this situation – wants to do it, is a completely different matter.

“There are reported doubts of that element. There were suggestions that he was going to stay and decide in the summer, with more options in front of him. I know that he is keen to break more goalscoring records in Italy, so it’s a really delicate situation that with quite a few days left in the window to go, I don’t think Arsenal are going to turn their back on.

“A lot of people are keen to suggest where that money might come from. Well, I think it’s the sort of thing that Arsenal would need to lean on their ownership for support. Once again, we saw it in the case of Thomas Partey, for example”

The 21-year-old is one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe right now as he’s been in electric form for La Viola.

As per Transfermarkt, the 6 foot 3 marksman has found the net 20 times in 24 appearances, adding to his total of 21 goals in 2020/21. Only Robert Lewandowski bagged more goals than Vlahovic in 2021.

Such exploits have led to him being talked about in the same breath as players like Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe.

His former coach at Partizan, Ivan Tomic, once dubbed him a “monster” who will be worth in excess of €100m (£83m) one day, as revealed by then-assistant Zarko Lazetic to Sky Sports.

Vlahovic offers the Gunners a different kind of threat, particularly aerially given his height but he is also quick, aggressive and has a light touch.

The futures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah seem rather dubious in north London right now, so the need for a striker is certainly at the top of the list.

On the above evidence, plenty of supporters should be left buzzing by Ornstein’s fresh update.
