Crystal Palace: Fans react to Eagles’ Will Hughes pursuit

Crystal Palace have opened talks to sign Watford midfielder Will Hughes after he turned down the chance to sign a new contract at Vicarage Road, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Playing a regular part in the Hornets’ successful promotion bid in 2020/21, the 26-year-old registered two goals in 31 appearances across the campaign [Transfermarkt], but he could now be set for a move to south London after being frozen out under Xisco Munoz.

After knocking back a new deal with his current employers, Hughes has now opened talks with the Eagles over a move to Selhurst Park [Daily Mail].

He has been training with the under-23 side at Watford in recent weeks, prompting Palace manager Patrick Vieira to try and swoop for the Weybridge native, who can perform in central midfield, attacking midfield or on either flank.

A BBC profile on him in previous years noted his “trickery and the attacking flair” and also made reference to reported interest from Barcelona at the time, indicating the raw talent that the 26-year-old possesses.

In light of this news, plenty of Crystal Palace fans took to social media to express their opinions on the situation.

Crystal Palace fans react

Replying to popular Crystal Palace fan outlet PALACE XTRA on Twitter, here is what some fans had to say about the club’s reported talks over Hughes:

LFC fans upset by Michael Edwards news

A number of Liverpool fans are devastated after it was claimed that Michael Edwards will leave his role as the club’s sporting director at the end of the season.

The Reds have enjoyed a glorious period under Jurgen Klopp, winning both the Premier League and Champions League in the last two-and-a-bit years.

While Klopp has undoubtedly been the main reason for Liverpool’s great success, Edwards has also played a major role in his own right.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The Reds’ transfer guru has been integral to the club making some magnificent signings, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk all coming in under his watch. He has also recouped substantial fees for bit-part players such as Jordon Ibe, Danny Ward and Dominic Solanke.

Unfortunately, it looks as though Edwards’ time at Anfield is nearing its conclusion, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein claiming on Twitter that he will depart next summer.

Liverpool fans left gutted by Edwards’ mooted departure

It is a potentially “huge loss” for Liverpool if Edwards does indeed leave next summer, in the words of one Kopite, and these Reds fans have been reacting to the news via Twitter.

Pietersen wants players to respect credit crunch

Kevin Pietersen has said he wants his team, playing the Stanford 20/20 for 20, to respect the current economic crisis around the world whether they win or lose the US$20 million match against the Stanford Superstars on November 1. Over the last few months several investment banks in England and USA have declared bankruptcy, forcing a lot of people out of jobs.”This game has obviously come at a very difficult time in terms of what’s happening in the world and I want 100% respect for that, so there won’t be any nonsense happening in and around and after the game and I will be really angry if it does happen,” Pietersen said. “It’s simple. I respect everything that’s happening. Friends of mine are struggling, really struggling. People have lost their jobs and stuff, and there’s no way in the world I want anyone to carry on like a clown, win or lose.”Pietersen said the three matches that England will play in Antigua – against Middlesex, Trinidad & Tobago and the Stanford Superstars – will work as warm-ups ahead of the tour of India. “The Stanford game will be as pressured as playing India in India or Australia on the first day of an Ashes Test series. It will be interesting for me as a skipper to see how people deal with the week. Mentally, how they talk, what their primary focus is. It’s a case of winning games out there and taking momentum to India, which we can see is going to be really tough.”Pietersen will pick the final XI from the 15-man squad named last month, which he said would be a tough decision. “I might have to take a bodyguard. But I’m going to find out a lot about some individuals.” If England win, Pietersen will give a portion of his earnings to charity but that would not be mandatory for the rest of the players. “There are guys in the team who are older than me, I’m not their financial adviser,” he said.Whatever happens in the Caribbean, Pietersen’s focus remained cricket’s traditional form. “My message to those younger players is that if you play well for England over the years, you will earn that type of money and earn more than that,” he said. “Twenty20 is here to stay and is the future of coloured-clothes cricket, but white clothes separate the men from the boys. Tests are the pinnacle and I want to be remembered for having pretty good stats in Test cricket.”The Stanford Super Series kicks off on Saturday with the Superstars taking on T&T. England’s first match is against Middlesex on Sunday.

Crystal Palace: Fans love Eze’s number change

Crystal Palace confirmed seven new squad numbers ahead of the new season on Thursday.

One of which involved Eberechi Eze, and a number of Eagles supporters shared their positive thoughts about the change on the back of his shirt on social media.

Eze, who remains sidelined after rupturing his Achilles back in May, wore the number 25 shirt last season.

However, after Andros Townsend’s deal expired earlier in the summer, the club have now confirmed that the £37,000-a-week ace will inherit his number ten jersey.

There are also new numbers for Tyrick Mitchell (three) and Vicente Guaita (13), whereas new signings Marc Guehi (six), Michael Olise (seven), Joachim Andersen (16) and Conor Gallagher (23) were also assigned numbers.

However, it was Eze’s switch that got plenty of Palace fans talking on Thursday.

Palace fans react

The club posted the news on all seven players on their official Twitter page. This is what these Eagles supporters had to say regarding Eze’s change in number.

O'Brien and Wessels commit to Northants

Niall O’Brien has extended his contract with Northamptonshire by three years, while Riki Wessels has signed a new two-year contract

Cricinfo staff07-Nov-2008Niall O’Brien has extended his contract with Northamptonshire by three years, while Riki Wessels has signed a new two-year contract.”We are pleased by the commitment shown by the wicketkeeping pair who both shone with the bat in 2008,” a spokesman for the club said. “Niall, who has just returned from international duty, was in sensational form last season with the bat, scoring over 850 Championship runs and piling on the runs in one day competitions, in a new pinch-hitter role.”Riki finished the 2008 season with almost 600 Championship runs, and his brilliant form led him to becoming one of the most reliable batsmen in the latter half of the season.”

Pundit says Man City must pay Tottenham £160m for Harry Kane

Graham Roberts has told Manchester City to pay £160m or they simply won’t sign Harry Kane this summer.

The Premier League champions have made just one bid for the England captain of around £100m, which was rejected by Daniel Levy, who values him in excess of £150m.

Tottenham want to keep their star striker despite his off the field actions having missed training in a bid to push a move to City.

Kane later came out and denied missing his return to Hotspur Way but was then left out of Spurs’ opening day victory over Pep Guardiola’s men, although his lack of a pre-season could have been the reason for his exclusion – with the 28-year-old only joining the rest of his teammates on Friday.

Reports from The Times believe that City are set to return with an improved offer, although it’s still less than Tottenham’s asking-price, which means it’ll most likely be rejected by Levy.

Several Manchester City plays have seen their names thrown into the ring as part of a possible deal to bring Kane to the Etihad Stadium.

But Roberts exclusively told Football FanCast that City simply must pay the money or look elsewhere:

“All they have to do is pay £160m, that’s it. There’s no good throwing in Sterling, Silva, Laporte, those players are on mega wages. Sterling hasn’t signed a new contract because he wants £400,000 per-week.

“Pay us what Harry Kane is worth, Pep Guardiola should stop talking about players who aren’t his. If he wants him, come up with the money, and I’m sure the club will sell him to you.

“But are you going to pay what he’s worth? He’s worth £160m, pay it.”

Senior PCB figure Naghmi to quit

The administrative revamp of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) continuesapace with Shafqat Naghmi, an influential senior official from theprevious regime, wanting to step down with a new chairman now in place

Cricinfo staff20-Oct-2008The administrative revamp of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) continuesapace with Shafqat Naghmi, an influential senior official from theprevious regime, wanting to step down with a new chairman now in place.Naghmi, the board’s chief operating officer, joined the PCB as aseasoned governmental bureaucrat during the tenure of Nasim Ashraf in 2007and quickly became a key figure in the board. When Ashraf resigned inAugust, Naghmi became, in effect, the de facto head of the board. But thearrival of Ijaz Butt, with whom he is believed to have a poorrelationship, has prompted him to reconsider his future.”I don’t think I have much to contribute to this administration,” Naghmitold Cricinfo. “Apparently a letter has been sent to the government fromthe board asking them to appoint me somewhere else. I came here because itis a game we all love in this country and I wanted to contribute to it.”There seems little doubt he will not go, especially in light of astatement made by Butt at his first press conference since becomingchairman. Responding to reports that senior officials had been trying totake away documents and files from the board’s headquarters at GaddafiStadium, Butt seemingly singled out Naghmi. “Yesterday there was a manrunning out – with due apologies it was the chief operating officer, whotried to take some files with him in his car.”Nadeem Akram, director HR and another key figure in the Ashrafadministration, has been eased out, while reports suggest that MansoorSuhail, director media, will also go the way of Naghmi, and back to agovernment posting. The developments come swiftly on the heels of the resignation ofSalahuddin Ahmed as chief selector and that of Talat Ali, the team’smanager over the last two years. One official summed up the changessuccinctly: “The board has apparently become a revenge house where eachadministration tries to eradicate everything and everyone from theprevious one.”

Sheth drops West Ham claim involving Milenkovic

Speaking live on Sky Sports News (via Football Daily), journalist Dharmesh Sheth has made a West Ham United claim involving manager David Moyes and transfer target Nikola Milenkovic.

The Lowdown: West Ham and Milenkovic saga…

The Hammers have been in talks to sign Milenkovic for nearly a fortnight following the club’s decision to prioritise the signing of a new centre-half before August 31.

Indeed, despite their alarming lack of depth going forward, West Ham and manager Moyes are keen to reinforce their central defensive options.

Both Kurt Zouma and Milenkovic have been the main targets, with claims even emerging last week that the latter man had his bags packed and a London Stadium move was imminent (Tuttosport).

However, as the talks die down, Sky journalist Sheth has shed some light on the situation.

The Latest: Sky reporter drops Milenkovic and Moyes claim…

Speaking live on air (via FD), Sheth has made a West Ham claim involving Moyes and Milenkovic as he explains why the Serbian powerhouse has not become a Hammers player.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-3/” title=”West Ham latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“West Ham were also in for Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic, that looked very close, and we all thought that Milenkovic would be coming to the London Stadium,” he said to Sky.

“But, I’m told that David Moyes decided that he wasn’t 100 per cent convinced that he was the right man for his squad.

“Because at the end of the day, the way it works at West Ham, yes David Sullivan will do the finances but David Moyes will make the final decision on whether a player comes in or not.”

The Verdict: Frustrating update…

Moyes recently spoke of the importance to carefully hand pick players he is certain will improve West Ham’s squad (football.london), but with the August 31 deadline fast approaching, they cannot afford to dilly-dally much longer.

Ahead of a long season as they also compete in the Europa League group stages, the Scotsman will have just Craig Dawson, Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna to choose from as senior centre-back options in this moment.

Not to mention they are severely lacking alternative forward options to Michail Antonio, who spent a lot of 2020/2021 on the treatment table.

It really is now make or break for West Ham with new additions arguably a necessity, and they seem to have missed out on Milenkovic who has been described as ‘affordable’ by Italian football experts (Conor Clancy, speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern).
