Sky Sports drop Spurs claim involving Zouma

Speaking on live TV (via Football Daily), Sky Sports have now dropped a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma.

The Lowdown: Spurs in centre-back chase…

It has been reported that Spurs are looking into signing another defender this summer even after completing a deal for 2020/2021 Serie A MVP award-winning defender Cristian Romero.

Claims emerged earlier this week of their renewed interest and contacts for Takehiro Tomiyasu, with managing director Fabio Paratici eager to land another defensive option for Nuno Espirito Santo.

They have also been in talks to sign Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic (Sky Sports), with Sky now bringing news as Spurs eye another West Ham United target.

The Latest: Sky drop live TV claim involving Zouma and Spurs…

As per the broadcast giant, via Football Daily’s post, Tottenham are now interested in signing Zouma this summer as they bring a transfer update out of N17.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“Tottenham are interested in signing Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma,” Sky explained.

“He’s one of a number of defenders the club are looking at.”

The Frenchman now joins a growing list of Spurs transfer targets for the central defensive area as Paratici eyes yet more reinforcements to protect goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The Verdict: Great option, but unlikely…

Lauded as a ‘beast of a player’ by Premier League legend John Terry (Instagram Live via Tribuna), Zouma arguably has the ability to succeed at Tottenham.

Standing at a lofty 6 foot 3, the 26-year-old averaged a higher pass accuracy (90.9%) than any Spurs player in the English top flight last year – highlighting his real composure passing out from the back (WhoScored).

However, Chelsea and Tottenham’s unwillingness to do business is well documented so it is difficult to see this transfer coming off as a result.

Daniel Amartey outshone Jamie Vardy

Leicester City’s pursuit of Champions League football got off to the best start possible after Jamie Vardy’s strike saw off Wolves 1-0 at the King Power Stadium this afternoon.

The Foxes’ talismanic striker found the back of the net just before half-time thanks to an extremely well-taken header following Ricardo Pereira’s cross from the right-hand side.

Beginning life under new manager Bruno Lage following Nuno Espirito Santo’s departure, Wolves had a golden opportunity to take the lead with the score at 0-0, with pacey winger Adama Traore running clear of the Leicester defence.

However, the Spain international could only side-foot his effort tamely wide of Kasper Schmeichel’s post, and the FA Cup holders barely gave the opposition attack a sniff after that.

Although Vardy will get the headlines for his match-winning goal, it was stand-in centre-back Daniel Amartey who provided the base for Leicester’s success.

Rodgers decided to keep faith with the 26-year-old following his impressive showing in the Community Shield despite Jannik Vestergaard completing his move from Southampton to take his place in the matchday squad.

As per SofaScore, Amartey received a match rating of 7.6 out of 10 this afternoon, the second-highest total amongst his teammates, while his 89 touches were the third-most of anyone in Rodgers’ side.

The Ghanaian won four of his five duels and made made two tackles and two clearances during his 90 minutes on the pitch. but he was also excellent with the ball at his feet. Amartey achieved a passing accuracy of 92% while completing four of his six attempted long passes.

New signing Vestergaard will have had a week’s worth of training with his new teammates under his belt by the time Leicester take on West Ham United in the Monday night fixture next up, but Amartey will be hoping that his impressive showing has done enough to see him start again in nine days’ time.

Gers’ Gerrard suggests rule change

Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard believes he should be allowed to name more substitutes in the Premiership rather than the seven currently permitted.

The Lowdown: Gers get off to winning start

The Gers were in fantastic form as they kicked off their Premiership campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Livingston.

The Ibrox outfit will now move on to the Champions League, where they face Malmo in the first leg of their third qualifying round.

The Latest: Gerrard wants rule change

Speaking after the victory, Gerrard suggested managers should be allowed to name more substitutes domestically. He told Rangers TV (via The Daily Record):

“It (having squad options) is a lovely problem, I want the squad to be as strong as we can and have good players in every position.

“Over the course of the season we’re hopefully going to play 60 games, if it’s a successful season.

“So everyone needs to be ready. It was tough today, leaving people out of the 18.

“I think the rule needs to change.

“I understand why it has to be three subs but I think it needs to be more options from the bench like it is in the Champions League.

“But I don’t make the rules around here.”

The Verdict: Easy to say

Of course, you can understand why Gerrard would want that. At Ibrox, he has a big squad and a lot of options to choose from – having more players on the bench will give him more flexibility and would keep more of his squad members happy.

However, other than perhaps Celtic, the rest of the sides in Scotland’s top tier do not have the squad size or depth that the Gers possess. Given only three players can be replaced during the course of a match, seven substitutes is already a big enough number to choose from.

In other news, Rangers fans were livid at this article.

Bresnan called up as Sidebottom ruled out

Tim Bresnan, the Yorkshire allrounder, has been called into England’s squad for their ODI against Scotland, at the Grange, on Monday to cover for injury problems to Ryan Sidebottom and Chris Tremlett.Sidebottom has a hip problem and hasn’t travelled to Edinburgh with the team and has been ruled out of the Twenty20 against South Africa, at Chester-le-Street, on Wednesday. He will undergo fitness tests at the National Academy in Loughborough with a view to his participation in the one-day series which starts at Headingley next Friday.Sidebottom has been struggling with injuries through the second half of the season. He missed the Headingley Test against South Africa with a back problem and didn’t look fit when he returned at Edgbaston before being left out at The Oval. However, England coach Peter Moores isn’t concerned about Sidebottom’s long-term fitness. “Physically he’s in a better shape than he was 12 months ago, but he has had a lot of workload and he’s bowled a lot of overs in the Test matches,” he told the . “We rested him for the last Test and it’s given him a bit more of a window to get fully recharged. He’s had a bit of groin pain and neck pain, which they are hopeful of getting cleared up so he is available for the next period to come.”Tremlett has a heel injury and although he has remained with the squad he is doubtful to face Scotland, which has earned Bresnan his recall.Bresnan played four ODIs and one Twenty20 international during 2006, but took just two wickets against Sri Lanka. However has impressed with a consistent county season. He has scored 442 runs in the Championship at 36.83 and taken 40 wickets at 26.42, while earlier in the season he took 18 wickets at 18.05 in the Friends Provident Trophy.England will also be without former one-day captain Paul Collingwood for the match against Scotland as he continues to serve the four-match ban he collected for a slow over-rate against New Zealand. Samit Patel, the Nottinghamshire allrounder, could be in line for a debut after hitting 60 for England Lions against the South Africans on Saturday.

Delhi collapse to hand ROI trophy

Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh ran through Delhi’s batting order and completed a 187-run win for Rest of India in the Irani Cup match in Vadodara

The challenge facing Delhi on the fourth day – they needed 265 runs with seven wickets in hand – was always going to stretch them, and their batsmen, with the exception of Gautam Gambhir, caved without a fight. They were bowled out within the first session: Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh exploited the cracks in the pitch to pick up seven wickets, and Rest of India won the Irani Cup for the 21st time by 187 runs in Vadodara. The slide started in the second over of the day. Gambhir had batted aggressively on the third evening and needed a stable partner. Aakash Chopra, who had not opened because of an ankle injury, joined him with a runner. He had scored 182 in last week’s Nissar Trophy and a confident 42 in the first innings against a versatile and experienced attack. Chopra’s resistance in the second innings, however, ended with his first ball. He drove away from his body at a Zaheer Khan delivery and inside-edged it on to his stumps.Kumble brought Harbhajan on inside the first hour to take advantage of the wearing pitch and the offspinner struck immediately. Mithun Manhas tried to pad a delivery but the ball turned into him, deflected off the bat handle, and went to Rahul Dravid at first slip. The only point of interest after that was whether Gambhir, who scored steadily despite the regular setbacks, would reach his century. He fell on 91, edging an attempted cut off Kumble to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. This was the last opportunity for the national players to get match practice ahead of the Tests against Australia and coach Gary Kirsten would have expected more. Before the start of the game he, and Kumble, had said this game was an important component in their preparation for the Australia series and each individual had a role to fulfill and understood it well.If Sourav Ganguly doesn’t make the Test squad, it will open up a vacancy in the middle order. Two of the contenders for the spot, S Badrinath and Mohammad Kaif, had the opportunity to push their claims in the Irani Cup but failed to turn in convincing performances. Badrinath looked in discomfort in the first innings and did not move his feet. He made a scratchy 16 off 62 balls before he was bowled while trying to cut. He was more confident during his 36 in the second innings before he was struck on the elbow and bowled once again by Ishant Sharma.Kaif had made adjustments to his batting stance after chats with Kirsten but met with little success. He failed to convert a start in the first innings, top-edging a pull to midwicket, and edged a scorcher from Ishant off his second ball in the second innings. One of the biggest positives was the performance of the bowlers. Zaheer Khan bowled wicket-to-wicket and focused on the batsman’s weaknesses: he exploited Sehwag’s slow footwork and trapped him lbw with one that cut in during the second innings. Ishant was hostile and extracted pace and bounce from a slow pitch, Munaf Patel proved his recovery was on the right path, while both Kumble and Harbhajan showed how dangerous they could be on a helpful surface. Only RP Singh was erratic with his line and length. The most significant outcome from this game, however, was the resolute batting of Rahul Dravid, who opened for Rest of India. His poor form over the last year has hurt India but here he succeeded in the most demanding of situations. As the wicket grew slower, Dravid stuck it out for nearly five hours in the second innings. He played the majority of the deliveries confidently, used soft hands to block short balls aimed at the body, and waited for the bowler to feed his strengths. It was the sort of preparation Dravid would have hoped for ahead of the Australia series and it was a terrific example of mental discipline for the rest to follow.

Rangers: Alex Rae slams John Lundstram

Former Glasgow Rangers player Alex Rae hammered John Lundstram following his performance in the Gers’ 1-0 defeat to Dundee United on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Gers suffer loss

Last term, the Gers went the entire Premiership campaign unbeaten (thefishy.co.uk). However, it took them just two matches this time around to lose their first game (Sky Sports).

The £6.3m-valued Lundstram (Transfermarkt) was selected in the starting line-up by Steven Gerrard, just as he was against Malmo in the first leg of the Gers’ third round Champions League qualifying tie – the Light Blues were on the losing side on both occasions.

The Latest: Rae slams Lundstram

Speaking on Clyde1 Superscoreboard (via Ibrox News), BT Sport pundit Rae was far from happy with the 27-year-old’s display on Saturday. He said:

“You look at Lundstram in the middle of the park, I am struggling to see what he is actually bringing at the moment.

“I have to take on board that like most players that come to a new club he is trying to get up to speed, but I don’t know what he is bringing to the park.

“Rangers need someone to go from middle to front so that they can get runners going in behind, because when you are playing against a team that have a low block, two banks that you have to break, you need to get runners going in behind and get them stretched to find those gaps.”

The Verdict: Dilemma for Gerrard

It has not been the best start to Lundstram’s career north of the border. Having signed on a free transfer from Sheffield United (rangers.co.uk), many believed that the midfielder’s arrival would provide a big boost to the 55-time Scottish champions. So far, though, he has looked off the pace and has struggled to deal with what is being asked of him, already finding himself shipping criticism not just from Rae, but from numerous Gers fans.

The second leg of that Malmo clash is on Tuesday – after losing the first leg 2-1, the Gers must win to give themselves a chance of progressing to the play-off round. After this latest showing against the Tangerines, Gerrard now has a dilemma as to whether to include Lundstram in the starting line-up for the match against the Swedish champions.

In other news, Rangers are ready to listen to offers for this 22-year-old.

Fulham: Fabio Carvalho linked with exit

Fulham winger Fabio Carvalho is being targeted by a number of Premier League teams heading into the new season, according to the Daily Mail.

What’s the story?

Carvalho has made six appearances in all competitions for Fulham’s first-team, where he’s evidently caught the eye with some strong performances.

The 18-year-old scored his first senior goal against Southampton, and it’ll be interesting to see whether he features in Marco Silva’s plans for the senior squad this season.

The Daily Mail have recently reported that Leeds United, West Ham, Norwich City and FC Porto are keen on signing Carvalho this summer, with that report claiming that Fulham are struggling to keep hold of the winger.

Shahid and Tony Khan reportedly are facing a difficult decision as to whether to cash in on Carvalho this summer or not, if they fail in their negotiations with the winger over a new contract.

‘Really bright’

Carvalho is only 18, and has shown real promise in the early stages of his senior career, which got underway towards the end of the 2020/21 season, where Fulham were already relegated from the Premier League.

He’s shown that he’s a player that isn’t shy on the big stage of senior football, and that’ll be pleasing to see for the Craven Cottage faithful, who will be keen to see Carvalho play his part in the club’s bid for promotion back into the top-flight this season.

Former Fulham boss Scott Parker previously labelled Carvalho as ‘really bright’, and was pleased to see him impress at senior level for the Cottagers, after scoring in the defeat to Southampton last term.

“Massive positive for us because he’s the one who’s going to be here, he’s a player that is really bright and can bring something to this team and you saw that today.

“We’ve seen his quality today, we’ve seen him scoring and assisting at an under-23 level but now he’s been around first-team players, he’s pushed on and done that as well.”

A move to Leeds United or West Ham could tempt Carvalho though, with both teams showing that there is a pathway through from their Under-23s team through to the senior squad, with Pascal Struijk (Leeds) and Ben Johnson (West Ham) being a class example of this.

But if Fulham are to have ambitions of returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking this season, then they’ll be doing all they can to keep Carvalho at Craven Cottage for the foreseeable future moving forwards.

Edwards leads England to emphatic win

England dominated the first of three Twenty20s by thumping South Africa by 54 runs at Northampton on Friday

Cricinfo staff22-Aug-2008
ScorecardEngland dominated the first of three Twenty20s by thumping South Africa by 54 runs at Northampton on Friday. Charlotte Edwards’ 34-ball 45 helped give England the early momentum and her team-mates joined her in hitting out to boost the home side to 138 for 6. In reply, South Africa struggled from the off to seal the conclusion early on, though they didn’t fold entirely.Claire Taylor missed out with illness but England still cashed in, although Ebony Rainford-Brent registered a duck on debut, coming in for the last few balls of the first innings after Cri-Zelda Brits sent them in.South Africa soon slumped to 28 for 4, as Isa Guha, Katherine Brunt and Holly Colvin troubled them, but Brits and Susan Benade were able to add a respectable unbeaten 56. Brits will be happy with that kind of spirit – the England leg of this tour has been about fighting back.Benade was unbeaten on 34 from 41 balls, having earlier picked up 2 for 21, while Brits was unbeaten on 20. This was only the fourth Twenty20 for Brits’ side and South Africa will barely have time to pause for breath before returning to the County Ground on Saturday for a double-header after Wednesday’s opener was washed out.
