Long-serving Grant Bradburn retires from cricket

New Zealand domestic cricket lost one of its longest-serving players of the modern generation today when Northern Districts stalwart Grant Bradburn decided to retire

Lynn McConnell18-Sep-2002New Zealand domestic cricket lost one of its longest-serving players of the modern generation today when Northern Districts stalwart Grant Bradburn decided to retire. His announcement completed 16 years of first-class cricket for Northern Districts. In the summer of 2000/01, Bradburn had reward for his unstinting service to his province when regaining his international status after a 10-year absence. The tall, off-spinning batsman played 127 first-class matches and scored 4978 runs at 27.81 while taking 250 wickets at 32.69. He scored 2289 runs in limited overs matches and took 101 wickets with a career economy rate of 3.73.He played seven Test matches and 11 One-Day Internationals and ended his career as the player with most matches for ND with 115 matches, 4614 runs at an average of 27.96.Bradburn remarked: “My love of the game is still very much alive and I will certainly miss the enjoyable moments that playing the game brings, however, with a wife and two young boys to share time with and a sports retail store to run, it is time to close the book on my playing days.”ND chief executive John Turkington said today: “Grant’s record stands for itself. He has been a loyal servant of Northern Districts cricket since 1985 and in that time his dedication to the Association has been exemplary. We know that Grant will maintain an interest in Northern Districts cricket and wish him all the best for the future.”

Gers fans livid at Club 1872 move

Glasgow Rangers fans are livid after supporters group Club 1872 expelled the Gers’ chaplain Reverend Stuart McQuarrie from the group.

Club 1872 are set to become a bigger part of the make-up of the Gers in the coming years. Shareholder and former chairman Dave King has agreed to sell his stake in the 55-time Scottish champions to Club 1872 over the next 36 months (BBC), meaning the supporters group will own more than a quarter of a club by then if they can complete the transaction (The Herald).

They are trying to raise over £13m to purchase the shares, meaning they need the support of thousands of Rangers supporters. But it seems they have done little to endear themselves after they expelled McQuarrie from the group. This, certainly, is not a good luck, and comes after criticism has already been aimed at the group (via The Scottish Sun).

The news was shared on Twitter by @Follow_Follow_, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the McQuarrie news below

“This is all a bit embarrassing, isn’t it? Club 1872 are in self destruct mode. Not a good look at all.”

“Worrying stuff, Club1872 have not been transparent at all to backers. Zero communication to fans but are a self-described fan organisation. We must stop funding directly to Club1872 to prevent them from buying new shares. Let’s also not forget them blocking Rangers fans on here.”

“I’ll pay my sub till the egm and vote for change, if it doesn’t work I’m out. Was willing to listen but to expel the club chaplain is a stain on the organisation.”

Fulham backed to land NUFC target Armstrong

An update has emerged on reported Newcastle transfer target Adam Armstrong, with the forward being tipped for a Championship move.

What’s the talk?

An EFL insider has hinted that the much-coveted Blackburn striker could end up at Championship outfit Fulham before the end of the window.

They told Football Transfer Tavern: “Adam Armstrong from Blackburn could be one, similar to Dwight Gayle, but has more goals in his game in my opinion.

“He’s proven now and a good bid might get him to move to a big club like Fulham, with its wealth.”Newcastle have been touted in recent months with an interest in a deal to bring the £25m-valued forward back to St James’ Park this summer, with West Ham and Southampton also reportedly keen. Upgrade on Gayle

Newcastle must act swiftly to secure a deal for Armstrong before any other suitor is able to swoop in for him in the final weeks of the transfer window. The Magpies cannot afford to allow a Championship club to beat them to what could be a fantastic signing.

He could be a significant upgrade on Dwight Gayle and bolster Bruce’s options in the final third considerably. The 31-year-old scored once in 18 Premier League appearances for the Toon last term, averaging a lowly WhoScored rating of 6.21.

This suggests that it could be time for the Magpies to part ways with the former Crystal Palace man as he has not been able to produce consistent performances in the top flight. Selling him could then open the door for Armstrong to come in and replace him, and he could prove to be a more valuable asset than the experienced Gayle.

Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray lavished praise on the “explosive” Newcastle target last season and admitted that he has matured as a player. He told FourFourTwo: “Adam does (make a difference) as he has done all season. I think Adam has matured and he’s only 23.

“He’s a boy really, but his explosive pace at the top end of the pitch allows you to play both ways, to not be overly concerned if you’re pinned back around the edge of your box because one pass releases pressure to someone like (Harvey) Elliott to play the pass that he can hit just leaving it in the space for the speed and dynamic movement of Armstrong – it’s a devastating effect for the team.”

Armstrong scored an impressive 28 goals in the Championship for Blackburn last season, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.15 for the club. He is bang in form and seven years younger than Gayle, which means that the 24-year-old has the potential for further development whilst also showing that he could shine for Newcastle straight away. Therefore, Bruce should be pushing for this deal to be completed in August.

Rangers fans on Hagi disallowed goal

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left fuming at a referee decision in their 0-0 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion in a friendly on Saturday evening.

Ianis Hagi thought that he had scored late on in the second half, only for the referee to bring the play back for an alleged foul on Yves Bissouma.

Steven Gerrard’s men more than held their own against the Premier League outfit, as new signing John Lundstram hit the crossbar as the Gers threatened to go ahead on more than one occasion in the first half (The Daily Mail).

Even though it was just a pre-season friendly, it would have been a very good result if the Ibrox faithful managed to beat the Seagulls, but in the end, they had to settle for a draw.

Nonetheless, a lot of RFC supporters were not happy at all with the decision to chalk Hagi’s goal off.

These Rangers fans slammed the decision to disallow Hagi’s goal on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that it was a ‘terrible decision’:

Nuno plotting double raid for Spurs

Speaking to talkSPORT (via Twitter), journalist Alex Crook has dropped a teasing Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Lowdown: Paratici and Nuno enter…

Tottenham’s two big appointments this summer in managing director Fabio Paratici and new head coach Nuno look set to shape a new era in north London.

In what looks set to be a very intriguing 2021/2022 season, Paratici has been tasked with developing Tottenham’s on-field sporting operations, while Nuno will be attempting to shape this Lilywhites team in his own image.

The Portuguese enjoyed a brilliant spell at Wolves overall, despite an underwhelming final season, and Lilywhites supporters will be intrigued to see who he recommends as prime transfer targets this summer.

The Latest: talkSPORT drop claim on Nuno plan…

Speaking to talkSPORT, Crook has now lifted the lid on a transfer plan involving Nuno, Spurs and two Wolves players.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-2/” title=”Tottenham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, as per the reporter, the 47-year-old manager may now be plotting a ‘double raid’ on his former club and could swoop for defender Willy Boly and winger Daniel Podence.

“It could lead Nuno back to his old club Wolves,” explained Crook.

“Willy Boly, according to my contacts in Portugal, possibly a player Nuno would like to take from Molineux.

“And so to Daniel Podence, a frustrating player in many ways, because there is clearly some talent there, still for me hasn’t really got to grasp with the physicality of the Premier League.

“But clearly a player Nuno has great faith in, so there could be some kind of double raid on Wolves from Nuno Espirito Santo.”

The Verdict: Right move?

While the prospect of a ‘double raid’ is enticing in itself, we believe these two players should be further down the list if Nuno is indeed going to turn to his old club.

According to WhoScored, while Boly made the second-most clearances per 90 (4) out of anyone at Wolves over 2020/2021, he also started just 21 matches in the Premier League and is currently 30-years-old – meaning Spurs don’t stand to gain much sell-on value.

Podence, meanwhile, started 22 games under Nuno and failed to wow when compared to the likes of Adama Traore and Pedro Neto – who both lead the way in terms of completed dribbles and key passes per 90 (WhoScored).

Taking this into account, we believe Nuno should be looking elsewhere to reinforce his new Tottenham team.

SECURITY CONCERNS?I read with ‘concern’ the article that was headed “Security concerns and rain cloud Harare Test”, that was submitted onto the net on 8 November 2002. Please allow me to air my views on this article. My name is Doug Gendall, ex-Zimbabwean, now residing in Auckland, New Zealand. I worked for a Security Company in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and for the final two years of my employ there, was contracted out by the Zimbabwe Cricket Union to head the Security for visiting Test-playing nations to Zimbabwe. I have covered Security for teams such as England, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia, India, Bangladesh and South Africa. My job was to co-ordinate the security arrangements whilst these teams were within the borders of Zimbabwe, and also report to the Zimbabwe Cricket Union if I felt that the team in question was under ‘threat’ whilst there.Of all the teams I had the pleasure of dealing with, this never happened ONCE. All teams arrived in the country, played their cricket and left, not unhappy, but with sincere memories of such a wonderful country. I was in a position where I was being passed comments directly from the players, and never once was there a ‘wicked word’ uttered about the country they were in.Regarding the article, and the fact that a particular comment was raised about ’30 guards ringing the field’, totally surprised me. What is 30 guards? For the one-day internationals that I dealt with when the Aussies were in Zimbabwe, I had 65 day-shift guards on duty at Queens Cricket ground in Bulawayo. What was the end result? – “A safe place to be whilst one enjoys a good day’s cricket.”Peter Chingoka, President of the Zimbabwe Cricket Union, is quite correct in his comments regarding security. Peter Chingoka’s job is Cricket, and Security’s job is security. Before a Test-playing nation arrives, meetings have already taken place with regard to Security. Most of these meetings are held with management of the actual cricket ground itself. Meetings are actually held on the pitch itself so areas of concern can be picked up physically, as opposed to looking at a diagram in a board room. I have been present in very many of these meetings, and the management of the various sports clubs looked to me for advice and I duly gave it to them. It was then decided on the number of guards that would be deployed on the day of the match. The Security Guards on duty are not there to counter-attack an aerial invasion of foreign forces into the country; no, they are simply there to protect the people watching the game from unruly elements, such as bag snatchers, drunkards and your general ‘lets look for trouble’ man/woman. When I was heading the Security for the teams that visited Zimbabwe, I had security guards placed in positions that I knew would be effective: at the main gates, by the changing rooms, on the perimeter fences, in the car parks and, most of all, on the ring of the pitch itself. In fact, had I had my own way, I would have had 130 guards on the ring of the pitch, not 30. These guards on the ring of the pitch are there for several reasons. They are there to avoid pitch invasions; they are there to (try to) prevent people from throwing missiles onto the pitch with the aim of hitting an outfielder. They are there during the lunch breaks to prevent people from entering the crease area to vandalize it. The security guard on the ring of the pitch has a vital job of work to do, and it is through his long hours that he endures in the sun and the rain that enables the paying public to enjoy a day’s cricket.Yes, the last thing Zimbabwe needs is a breach of security just months away from the World Cup. What would it look like if there was a 2000-strong pitch invasion in Harare at the end of the First Test? What would the ZCU look like if a visiting team reported that their kit had been stolen from their changing rooms? This is all part of security. I believe it has nothing to do with the unfortunate economical climate in Zimbabwe; if it has, it plays a small part, but the majority responsibility of security at the ground itself is, naturally, to protect the players, to protect the public, and let all the thousand of supporters enjoy their outing, knowing that security is in place to look after them.I have been in the continual presence of the likes of Tendulkar, Lara and Pollock and many more of the ‘big guns’ of world cricket, and never once was a negative comment passed onto me about Zimbabwe. In fact, a lot of them actually told me that they ‘would love to return for a holiday.’One more comment, please. If something goes missing at the cricket ground during a match, who is blamed? – the police or security? If there is a problem to be solved, who is called? – police or security? In both instances, it is always security.Peter Chingoka was quite correct in what he said. In fact, on a lighter note, Peter Chingoka’s lovely wife was once questioned by one of my security guards as to why she was trying to enter the VIP area at Harare Sports Club. Because she had no identity on her, my guards refused her entry. This is proper and correct security. She was eventually ‘rescued’ by someone who knew her.Having guards at a cricket ground does not imply that they are there on ‘red alert’. They are there to look after the people, even YOU.Visit my little website for some of the more interesting aspects of my life with the rich and famous, as in the legends of world cricket: www.dougendall.cjb.net.Thank you for taking time to read this letter. I had to clear my mind of this article that was released. Feel free to respond to my email, I would like to hear them, feel free to show this e mail to Peter Chingoka himself, or any member of the Zimbabwe cricket team. They will confirm who I am, and also confirm the long hours I spent with the visiting teams ensuring their safety whilst in beautiful Zimbabwe.Doug Gendall (Auckland, New Zealand)

FIRST TEST TEAMI’ve just seen the First Test squad and noticed that Travis Friend isn’t in there, so what’s the story there? Also a bit of a surprise to see Blessing Mahwire in there.I just read the latest issue of the Zimbabwe weekly cricket magazine online and just wanted to know how do you get all your interviews with the players? Is it you that does these interviews with them or someone else? Being in your line of work I guess you’ve met most of the Zimbabwean cricketers.Adam Pfeiffer (Australia)

Reply: Travis picked up a leg strain so may not have been fit, but he has not been in the best bowling form this season. Yes, I do all interviews myself; ZCO is unfortunately a one-man show now, so everything is my own work unless otherwise credited!

SELFISH PLAYERS

I couldn’t agree more with your criticism of Jacques Kallis. I cannot understand how a player can be happy with any score he makes which is a result of cheating. Any victory achieved by such methods is a dubious one to say the least. It is good to see someone speaking out against such practice as it is something about which I feel very strongly. Just how good is a player who averages are achieved by ‘dishonest’ play?Your view on this subject will be read by a lot of people… that can be no bad thing… though it will probably be dismissed as old-fashioned by those who don’t agree.Beverly Treml (England)

UMPIRE VENKAT

The ophthalmologists think Mr Venkat can’t see properly so they provide him with specs but now with day two’s shocking decision against AndyFlower he quickly needs the services of an ENT specialist as his ears don’t function properly now. He did similarly to Andy Flower in the series in 2000 between India and Zim, and what a turnaround that was in the outcome of the series. The world’s best batsman scored 540 runs in the two-Test series. He may have scored more but Venkat had other ideas. This year also he gave a shocker against Carlisle in the Nagpur Test. He may have earned the respect of millions by his umpiring but I’m sorry to write that though I’m an Indian I don’t have any respect for him.I know my words may sound harsh but when Umpire Robinson can accused so heavily why can’t he? The shocking decision by Venkat and Shoaib’s petulant behaviour were the two forgettable things on day two. But cricket is a great game and I’m so happy to write that what I remember most is the cute, innocent face of Taibu when he reached his 50.As for Mr Venkat, with today’s decision his aging body desperately needs best rest. I wish him all luck but only OFF THE FIELD.Dr Situ Phalswal (India)

CFX?Now first but not least why isn’t the academy team participating in the Logan Cup this time around? I feel that’s a negative move to exclude them. Second, who selects the ‘selectors’? Lastly have Neil & Murray cut all ties with Zim cricket?Anele Bango (Aberdeen, Scotland)Reply: 1) The Academy season begins in January, along with the Zimbabwe school year, so now that the Logan Cup is played throughout the season, September to April, it is no longer possible to play the same Academy team throughout. 2) The selectors are appointed by the ZCU Board. 3) Yes, neither Neil Johnson nor Murray Goodwin has any connections with Zimbabwe cricket any longer.

THE RIGHT TEAM?The First Test is just over and it’s yet another disappointing defeat. Not because the Zim team is weak, but it’s due to the quota system and the incompetence of the selectors. Only those players in good form should have been selected. Masakadza and Mahwire are good players, but Rennie and Vermeulen were in better form to open the batting. Masakadza is not an opener. I wonder when will the selectors open their eyes and give a chance to Vermeulen? Marillier, the best batsman of the Logan Cup, has not been selected yet – why?Sean Ervine would have been a better choice than Mahwire. For me Barney Rogers is the most promising player in the future and I hope the selectors will give him a chance to prove he is a good all-rounder, perhaps for the Second Test.Could you please give us in a future issue of ZCO the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 squads for the cricket weeks in South Africa next month? I would also like to invite other Zim cricket fans to share their views with me by email on the matches.Patrick Sepulveda (France) – Email: [email protected].

THE RIGHT TEAM?I would like to comment on the just ended first Test between Zimbabwe and Pakistan. I would like to query the criteria used by Selectors as to choosing the final 11. As we all know Pakistan has some talented batsmen. Who in their right mind would choose Mahwire to be bowling and actually becoming successful? We have the likes of Hondo, Matambanadzo, Travis Friend, to mention a few. So why bother send them send to Australia for training and not use them? Please wake up and start pulling your socks, because it’s you the selectors letting us down.Hamilton has failed and personally I feel he ain’t no opener. There is Gavin Rennie, a natural opener, then you give us Hamilton. He did well in his first Test but it doesn’t mean he is the best coz he ain’t. I can possibly say there are several openers that can be used – for instance, Grant, Rennie to mention a few. Then I don’t know why Whittall is playing because he has not been performing well. Please give us a quality team because we love the sport and the country.I would like to congratulate Taibu for playing the way he has because it needs a lot of confidence to bat the way he has. Well played the Flower brothers, Ebrahim, Henry, Blignaut and Price.Wallace Manyara (Zimbabwe)

Southampton fans rage at Jankewitz exit

Many Southampton fans are far from happy after it was confirmed by the Saints that Alexandre Jankewitz has left the club to join Young Boys.

The Saints did not have the best of times of it in the Premier League last term – after a strong start, they ended up dropping to 15th in the table. The low point was easily the 9-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, which actually turned out to be Jankewitz’s first start for the club (Transfermarkt). Not that it lasted long – he was sent off in the opening five minutes.

That turned out to be one of just three appearances he made for the Saints – it has been confirmed that he has moved to Young Boys in Switzerland (southamptonfc.com). For many Saints fans, this appears to be a mistake – Jankewitz is just 19 years old, is a regular for the Swiss under-19s and appears to have a big future ahead of him.

The news was shared on Twitter by Southampton’s official channel, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts over what one fan called a “ridiculous decision” by the Saints.

'Asia has become the hub of the game' – Mali

ICC president Ray Mali said that the Asia Cup would be given more prominence to reflect the region’s importance in world cricket

Cricinfo staff27-May-2008ICC president Ray Mali said that the Asia Cup would be given more prominence to reflect the region’s importance in world cricket.”India has become the centre of attention and Asia has become the hub of the game,” Mail told a media conference in Sharjah. “We will make sure in the ICC Future Tour Programme that the Asia Cup should be given more importance. We will make sure that the event is held on a regular basis.”Countries like India, Pakistan Sri Lanka, UAE and Bangladesh have a huge following. Afghanistan, Oman, Nepal and Kuwait are showing great improvement and the ICC needs to support them in many ways. We will soon see tall, broad shouldered bowlers emerging from places like Afghanistan. These countries need all support and attention.”Mali, who leaves office in five weeks, also spoke of the push to globalise the game. “We are trying to take the game to America and in next 30 years China will be a force to reckon with. The country has a great potential to nurture cricket and the Asian Cricket Council is fully aware of it.”

-Quem sabe (jogar no Flamengo)? Para mim seria uma grande honra jogar no Flamengo, no Maracanã, estar aqui todo dia. É um time que eu tenho sim vontade de jogar – garantiu.

Liverpool fans react to Taiwo Awoniyi news

A number of Liverpool supporters are happy with the news that Taiwo Awoniyi will complete a summer move to Bundesliga side Union Berlin.

Jurgen Klopp could have a busy summer on his hands, as he looks to perfect his Reds squad ahead of next season.

There is plenty of focus on which players could come in and make difference, but there are also individuals who will head the other way to clear up funds and make room on the wage bill.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Awoniyi is one of them, with the Nigerian spending last season on loan in Berlin and Klopp seemingly not seeing a future for him at Liverpool.

Ironically, the 23-year-old has just been handed a UK work permit, but his permanent exit from Anfield is now almost complete.

According to Goal‘s Neil Jones on Twitter, Awoniyi will seal a £6.5million move to Berlin permanently, with a medical taking place on Tuesday.
