Everton board way of Benitez discontent

To cut Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright some slack, they have been dealt with a situation they never expected to walk into.

Carlo Ancelotti unexpectedly left Everton three weeks ago and while they were planning their recruitment for the summer ahead, they are now wasting precious time in having to find a new manager as well.

What’s the word?

The favourite for the job at the moment appears to be Rafael Benitez.

He has been in talks with the club for a few weeks now but he also faced competition from Lucien Favre and Roberto Martinez.

Indeed, judging by fan reaction, they’d accept anyone besides Benitez at Goodison Park.

However, a big twist could be on the cards if you believe reports in the Italian press. Calcio Mercato reported this week that despite thoughts to the contrary, an agreement between the two parties is yet to be found.

They went onto claim that the Spaniard’s profile is liked by the Toffees hierarchy but they are keen to avoid a Spurs/Gattuso 2.0 situation in Merseyside, aware of fan discontent.

Will Benitez become the new manager?

That’s impossible for us to say at the moment but reports from the English press specify that the 61-year-old is still close to being appointed at Goodison Park.

Though, with the board now aware of the uproar amongst fans at his potential arrival, it bodes well that they may actually look towards somebody else.

Fan power has been all too apparent in the last few months with supporters of the big or greedy six as they’re now being referred to, battering down the proposed European Super League.

Some of the continent’s biggest clubs aimed to break away from the Champions League but fans rallied around in protest against their team’s ownership.

Tottenham have witnessed a double dosage of that, not only protesting against the ESL but also taking aim at the board for their handling of the managerial situation.

They are on the hunt for a new boss after Jose Mourinho’s sacking and were close to hiring Paulo Fonseca. Though, after the deal collapsed, they targeted Italian stalwart Gennaro Gattuso.

Supporters instantly hated the idea and the plug was eventually pulled the plug on talks. Everton fans will now be hopeful that the same eventuality befalls their club.

They have voiced their displeasure at seeing a former Liverpool manager in the dugout and if Moshiri wants to appease those who hold the Toffees so dearly to their heart, he will have to look elsewhere.

After Benitez called Everton a “small club” back in 2007, they’d be delighted at seeing him walk away from negotiations. The board need to act sensibly on this one.

Bent names Alli as Grealish replacement

Marcus Bent has named the player who he thinks Aston Villa should sign as a potential replacement for Jack Grealish…

What’s the talk?

Former Premier League player Marcus Bent has suggested that Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli could be the ideal replacement for Jack Grealish at Aston Villa. Bent thinks that Manchester City will sign the Villa captain and has named Alli as his potential successor.

He told This is Futbol:

“I think Grealish is going to go to Manchester City.

“Dele Alli is his own worst enemy. When I was at Leicester City, Paul Dickov would fight himself in the locker room. Alli has to uncover those demons and do what he has to do because his footballing skills and ability are needed.

“Two years ago, he was a starter for the England national side. I think there has been stuff off the pitch which has contributed to him not playing at the top level.

“Everyone needs a second or third chance and he is a good player. He might have matured now and it’s time for him to flourish. I think he needs that confidence boost and to show himself that he still has the ability to play at this level.”

Smith would love him

Grealish has been heavily linked with a switch to The Etihad this summer and TalkSport claimed at the end of last month that he will complete a British record £100m transfer to Pep Guardiola’s side upon the conclusion of the European Championships. If true, that would leave a gigantic hole for Dean Smith to fill ahead of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign.

The 25-year-old provided six goals and 10 assists in 24 league starts last term for the Villans, averaging a phenomenal WhoScored rating of 7.56. This highlights how important he is to the club and why NSWE must bring in a top-class replacement to fill the void if they do sell him.

Alli could be the man they need and Smith would love working with the former MK Dons star at Villa Park next season. Although he endured a rough 2020/21 campaign, failing to score in the Premier League, he has shown his quality in the past and Smith could enjoy getting the best out of him and recapturing the 25-year-old’s form as he could turn into a crucial player.

Former England international Darren Anderton once compared Alli to England greats Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes, labelling him as a “freak of a talent” and a joy to watch.

He told GOAL:

“I’ve got to say that I loved Stevie G as a player and Scholesy but Dele Alli, for his age, is just a freak of a talent. I love his arrogance on the pitch, how clever he is in finding the positions that he does and his willingness to try everything. He is a real joy to watch.”

The £100k-per-week maestro has had three seasons of 19 direct goal contributions or more in the Premier League for Tottenham. In the 2019/20 campaign, Alli managed eight goals and four assists in 21 starts, with his best season being his haul of 18 goals and seven assists between 2016 and 2017 for Spurs.

This suggests that, when at his best, he could be as influential as Grealish with his goals and assists from the attacking midfield positions.

Therefore, Smith would love to have him at the club and that is why – if Grealish leaves – NSWE must pounce on a deal for Alli.

Rain ruins match

Same venue, different day, almost the same depressing result

Haydn Gill06-Jun-2002Same venue, different day, almost the same depressing result. The rain that severely affected Jamaica for ten successive days and completely washed out two Cable & Wireless One-Day Internationals a week-and-a-half ago returned to Sabina Park yesterday. This time around, half-a-match was played before the predicted afternoon showers, accompanied by roaring thunder and occasional flashes of lightning, made enough impact for an hour to force the abandonment of the first of five ODIs between West Indies and New Zealand.West Indies did not even have the chance to pursue their winning target of 177 from 50 overs when the clouds that had been hovering over Sabina during the entire lunch break burst and dumped a considerable amount of rain on the ground.During the lunch break, about eight policemen stood around the pitch protecting it like if it was hallowed turf. As soon as they made their way off and the umpires and the New Zealand players came onto the field, the showers started, at 1:50 p.m.The rain stopped about an hour later and although groundstaff made feverish attempts to have Sabina ready, match officials abandoned the game at 3:30 p.m., ten minutes before a resumption was needed to facilitate 25 overs, the minimum number required to constitute a match. It was a disappointment to those spectators in the half-filled stands who had stayed on in hope of a resumption. While the rain pelted down, scores of spectators in the Mound started their own impromptu game that generated excitement and entertainment.Sunshine returned to Sabina by 5 p.m., but West Indies captain Carl Hooper stopped short of saying if he felt the conditions were good enough to continue. Then, around 5:15 p.m., some New Zealand fans took to the field and had an impromptu game of their own.I don’t think I am in a position to say. The umpires are the ones who dictate whether we play or not. In their opinion it was wet, Hooper said.We had some very, very heavy showers and it was unfortunate. We obviously were in the better position. At the end of the day, there was still of lot of cricket to be played. We can’t complain. I suppose the weather intervened and there is nothing you can do about it but look forward to the next game.New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming admitted it was a hard call for umpires Asoka deSilva and Billy Doctrove.I sympathise with the umpires. It was a tough decision because you can’t add on any more time at the end of the day. The clock was ticking by.We probably would have played a 20-over game, but the rules don’t permit that, he said. It’s just one of those unfortunate situations where another half-hour, 45 minutes, maybe an hour, you could have played cricket, but by that time it was too late.New Zealand, seemingly affected by inadequate preparations, never batted with certainty and they required Craig McMillan’s 69 to add respectability to their eventual total.West Indies’ faster bowlers duly used a helpful pitch in the early stages, but their part-time spinners also assisted in the effort by sharing five wickets.Three of those went to Chris Gayle’s flat off-spin after Hooper entrusted him with the ball after 13 overs and two went to Hinds’ left-arm spin. One of Hinds’ victims was the important wicket of McMillan at a stage when he appeared to be in control and threatened to get a century and raise New Zealand’s total past 200.Brought on after 38 overs to make up the quota allocated to the fifth bowler, Hinds, playing in preference to pacer Corey Collymore, removed McMillan with his fourth ball, which was lifted into the waiting hands of Gayle at long-on.McMillan, adventurous at times, but generally selective in his strokeplay, did a fair job in getting New Zealand to their total after the terrible start. The pitch had been under covers for ten days because of the recent torrential rainfall, and it took many by surprise that the Black Caps batted first on winning the toss. There was early pace and bounce in the surface and the visitors were unable to negotiate it with any degree of certainty, limping to 37 for four before McMillan engineered a recovery.Birthday boy Mervyn Dillon despatched New Zealand’s two most experienced batsmen, combining to form an opening pair at this level for the first time.Nathan Astle, well remembered for his pugnacious hundreds in the Barbados and Antigua Test six seasons ago, attracted a ball which bounced and moved way to clip his outside edge on the way to a slip catch.Astle went for a fourth-ball duck and Fleming followed him in Dillon’s next over when he tumbled over on his backside in pulling a catch to square-leg.There might have been a hint of misbehaviour in the pitch when Chris Nevin found a delivery from Cameron Cuffy leaping from a good length and heading for his throat. Self-preservation led him to stab at the ball, which spliced off the top of the bat for a catch to gully.

Aston Villa: Italian clubs keen on El Ghazi

Sides from Italy are keen on signing Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi this summer, according to Gregg Evans of The Athletic.

The Lowdown: El Ghazi’s Villa career

El Ghazi made the move to the Midlands on loan back in 2018. He helped Villa earn promotion to the Premier League and was signed permanently from Lille in a deal worth £8.1m the following summer.

The 26-year-old, on £38,000-a-week, has made over 100 appearances for Villa in all competitions, with 62 of those coming in the Premier League.

He netted 10 times in 28 top-flight appearances last season, four of which came in Villa’s last seven league games.

The Latest: Evans’ claim

Evans shared a Villa mailbag on Thursday, answering numerous questions from supporters on a number of topics.

He was asked if any permanent departures were expected at Villa Park, aside from Jack Grealish, who has been linked with a move to Manchester City.

Evans said that Conor Hourihane is the most likely to leave but revealed that a few clubs from Italy are keen on El Ghazi.

El Ghazi, described as ‘remarkable’ by pundit Adrian Clarke, has two years remaining on his Villa deal, and Evans admitted he would be surprised to see the Dutch winger leave.

The Verdict: Keep

Although Villa have already bolstered their wide ranks with the club-record signing of Emiliano Buendia this summer, it would make sense to keep El Ghazi ahead of the new season, unless a big-money bid that proves too hard to turn down comes in.

He was Villa’s second-highest scorer last season and now appears to have adjusted to Premier League football following a tricky first season.

Trezeguet is also out with a serious injury, so El Ghazi, Buendia, Jack Grealish, Ashley Young and Bertrand Traore are currently Dean Smith’s wide options at this moment in time.

Leeds United make approach for Yangel Herrera

Leeds United have made an approach for Manchester City midfielder Yangel Herrera, and he could be a massive upgrade on Mateusz Klich.

What’s the story?

Leeds-based podcast Talking Shutt had previously revealed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side have got their eye on signing the Venezuela international this summer and that he is one of the players they have short-listed.

And now, speaking to LUFCFANZONE, Herrera’s agent has confirmed that the Whites have made an approach and asked about the midfielder’s situation, but at the moment, that’s as far as it has gone.

Massive upgrade on Klich

Able to play as a box-to-box central midfielder and even slightly deeper like Kalvin Phillips, Herrera’s arrival at Elland Road would see Leeds sign someone who is significantly better than Klich.

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, La Liga expert Euan McTear raved about the Venezuelan’s performances last season while on loan at Spanish side Granada, saying: “He’s been key to their qualification for Europa League and then the run to the quarter-finals.

“He’s like a classic box-to-box midfielder, a bit of a throwback in that way. His first instinct is to try and dribble, to pass it forward, charging forward he took so many shots this season, he would get in the box, he scored quite a few goals early on when they were lacking strikers and attacking midfielders and that’s the thing too, he’s been really versatile.”

Meanwhile, Venezuelan football expert and journalist Carlos Ponte said: “In Venezuela, we’ve never had as complete a footballer Yangel – elegant in possession, tall, very physically imposing, good at bringing the ball out, good in the air, the right mentality, and a good head on his shoulders.

“He has a lot of energy and stamina, is great at providing cover and a true team player. He’s good at bringing the ball out with a certain degree of elegance.”

And that “awareness” and being able to spot danger is clearly seen in his defensive numbers last season in La Liga – as per Sofascore, he averaged almost two tackles and one interception per game, while he’s an absolute monster in the 50/50s, winning a mind-boggling 8.2 duels per match in La Liga at a success rate of 51%.

To put that into context, Klich averaged just 1.1 tackles and 0.3 interceptions per match in the Premier League, while he could only win a measly 2.4 duels at a success rate of 36%.

Herrera meanwhile also bagged eight goals and provided two assists in all competitions last season, while Klich could only find the back of the net just four times, with Bielsa slowly easing the 31-year-old out of the starting line-up towards the closing stages of the season – he completed the full 90 minutes just twice in Leeds’ last 12 Premier League games.

It’s clear that the £17m-rated Herrera would be a huge upgrade on what Leeds have with the Poland international.

Meanwhile, Leeds facing major transfer blow as fresh twist emerges…

Majoritariamente, prevalece a decisão dele.

Gloucestershire Gladiators move further in front in NUL Division Two

An innings of 112 not out at a run a ball with four fours and seven sixes from Matt Windows helped Gloucestershire Gladiators to an imposing 274 for six in their forty-five overs. In reply, Northamptonshire Steelbacks were always chasing a lost cause and could muster only 219 to lose by 55 runs under the Bristol lights.Windows was particularly severe on his former team-mate Mike Cawdron. He hit three consecutive sixes in a final over that cost 24 and left Cawdron with the distinctly unpleasant figures of 9-0-91-1. He was not alone with some figures he would rather forget, but the way Windows set about the attack, nobody was safe.Windows was helped by Australian all-rounder Ian Harvey with 52 from just 36 balls, while skipper Mark Alleyne weighed in with 43 useful runs once Harvey was out. When the Steelbacks batted, it was initially David Sales who led the response to the Gladiators. He scored 51, but wickets were falling at regular intervals at the other end. Tony Penberthy picked up the challenge when Sales was out, reaching 64 from 51 balls as he tried to bring the asking rate within bounds. However, when he was stumped by Jack Russell off the bowling of James Averis and Cawdron completed a miserable evening by getting a four-ball duck, the end was not far away. It came when Jason Brown skied Averis to the wicket-keeper, the ball after he had been dropped by Alleyne who circled underneath a swirling chance without laying a hand on it. The injured Darren Cousins did not come out to bat and the Gladiators confirmed their position at the top of Division Two.

Tottenham Hotspur: Heung-min Son makes decision on Spurs future

Tottenham Hotspur winger Heung-min Son is set to remain with the club ahead of the 2021/22 season, after telling Nuno Espirito Santo that he’s looking forward to next term, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown: Son linked with Tottenham Hotspur departure

Son has caught the eye with a number of strong performances for Tottenham Hotspur over the years, with the winger scoring 107 goals in 280 appearances for the club so far.

It appears as though those impressive showings haven’t gone unnoticed though, with Bayern Munich reportedly previously being keen on reaching an agreement to land Son’s signature in the future.

Spurs reportedly offered Son a new contract worth more than £200,000 per-week, and he was close to agreeing a new five-year deal before Christmas 2020, but an agreement was never reached.

The latest: Decision made on Son’s short-term future

Despite talks over a new deal seemingly stalling, a Spurs source has reportedly told Football Insider that Son will stay put.

They have claimed that he has already told newly-appointed Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo that he is looking forward to working under his management next term.

Son is contracted with Spurs until 2023, but it remains to be seen as to whether his long-term future remains with the London-based club moving forwards.

But for the time being, this will come as a huge relief to the Lilywhites hierarchy and fans.

The verdict: Huge boost for Spurs

This is a huge boost for Tottenham Hotspur, and the club’s supporters will be delighted if this recent update from Football Insider is true.

Son has become even more crucial recently, having netted Jose Mourinho called him ‘incredible’ and an ‘animal’.

With Harry Kane’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium looking bleak, it will be vital for Nuno to build his new squad around a player of Son’s quality heading into the 2021/22 campaign.

Make no mistake about it, the South Korea star’s desire to stay is a huge boost for everyone at the club in what could have been an incredibly difficult rebuild if he and Kane were both to leave.
