Newcastle: Bruce can fix Rafa’s Armstrong howler

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce could fix Rafa Benitez’s major Newcastle howler by signing Adam Armstrong this summer.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months have suggested that the Magpies are leading the race to sign the Blackburn Rovers striker, with a number of other Premier League clubs also said to be interested.

And, former Newcastle ace Steve Howey has suggested that Armstrong would jump at the chance to move back to St James’ Park, saying: “I think he’d relish the chance of coming back and he’d be desperate to score goals because he is a goalscorer and we’ve seen him score some excellent goals for Blackburn.

“I think he’d be desperate for the chance to come back but it’s just whether the club are prepared to make that move.”

Bruce’s perfect chance

With 28 goals in 40 Championship games this season, it’s fair to say Armstrong has more than showed the kind of talent that he possess, and it just raises real question marks as to why Benitez sold him in the first place.

The Spaniard opened up on the decision to let Armstrong go on a permanent deal, saying: “Sometimes you have to think about the best for everyone.

“When a young player has no chance of playing too many minutes in the team it is important for him and everybody around him to realise he has to play. It was a good move for him and he has had minutes there. He is playing regularly at a good level.”

Benitez could have, and probably should have, shown more faith in the young striker back when he was in charge at St James’ Park, and offered him the kind of confidence and faith showed to players who arrive for big-money deals for example.

He made just 21 appearances for the Magpies before his departure, and his boss at Ewood Park, Tony Mowbray, has hailed the kind of progress he has made since joining his club.

He said: “He’s a goalscorer. He always has been. I took him to Coventry because I saw him score some amazing goals for England Under-19s. He scores off both feet, he’s electrically fast off the mark, he’s got all the attributes.

“As long as you’ve got players who can slide him in, put passes over the top, put the ball in space for him he’ll score goals. His explosive pace at the top end of the pitch allows you to play both ways. It’s a devastating effect for the team.”

With Howey’s claim that the £14k-a-week earning Armstrong would surely “relish” the chance of joining the Magpies, it’s surely the perfect time for Newcastle’s current boss Bruce to fix one of Benitez’s biggest mistakes at St James’ Park.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United could sign a major Miguel Almiron upgrade in this star…

Predicted West Brom XI v Wolves - team, injury news

West Brom head into tonight’s clash with arch-rivals Wolves knowing that the game is a must-win, otherwise, relegation to the Championship is all but confirmed.

The Baggies are winless in two matches and that has seen them sink 11 points adrift of safety, with only five games left to play.

Sam Allardyce will need to get his team selection spot on but what sort of line-up could we see at the Hawthorns this evening?

Here’s our predicted XI as Albion battle Wolves in the Black Country derby…

Given the lack of solid options at his disposal, the 66-year-old boss could only make two changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Villa last time out.

One of which will surely come in defence after leaking five goals in the last two games.

At Villa Park, Semi Ajayi came in for Dara O’Shea, which was perhaps a little harsh given how well the Irishman has performed in the Premier League, so he could come back in but instead of changing his central defensive partnership, he could instead take the place of Darnell Furlong at right-back.

Conor Townsend is likely to keep his place on the left, with Kieran Gibbs set to leave for the MLS this summer, and that back four will be in front of coveted shot-stopper Sam Johnstone.

The other change could come in midfield as 21-year-old Chelsea gem Conor Gallagher faces the axe after making his first start in four games last weekend.

Matty Phillips will be pushing for a start under Big Sam but his inclusion would come at a cost in the middle, as Matheus Pereira would surely move centrally alongside Ainsley Maitland-Niles, with Callum Robinson continuing on the other flank.

So the £10.8m-rated loanee could be the one to make way.

Up top, Mbaye Diagne is likely to remain as the Baggies’ target man, meaning Karlan Grant and Hal Robson-Kanu have to settle for a place on the bench again.

AND in other news, Journo drops worrying claim over West Brom’s “big-game player”, Big Sam will be gutted…

Gerrard has big Patterson decision to make

Steven Gerrard will have a huge decision to make at Rangers in the coming weeks, as with Nathan Patterson continuing to excel at Ibrox, there may well be no place in the team for talismanic captain James Tavernier, who recently made his return from injury.

The 29-year-old was back on the bench as Rangers beat their Old Firm rivals 2-0 in the Scottish Cup on Sunday but could only watch on as his teenage teammate produced another exceptional display in what was his first start in the derby.

Tavernier has been sidelined since February through injury, which has allowed Patterson to establish himself as the first-choice right-back in Gerrard’s side, as he has now made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, also contributing goals against Royal Antwerp and Cove Rangers.

During Premier Sports’ coverage of the game on Sunday, pundit David Weir was full of praise for the young defender after a rampant first half in which he regularly got past Celtic left-back Diego Laxalt, suggesting that he was having an “outstanding” game and was “playing with no fear”.

The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell was also complimentary of his performance after the game, saying:

“Nathan Patterson was terrific again. A first Old Firm start can be daunting but he played with such confidence and authority.”

Therefore, you could argue that Patterson’s recent displays mean that he should keep his place in the side, despite Tavernier being so instrumental in the title win this season.

Certainly, it is a nice headache for Gerrard to have and whilst it would be difficult to keep the club captain on the bench for upcoming fixtures, Patterson will surely want to keep his current form going, as he surely warrants a place in Scotland’s squad for the Euros this summer based on recent performances.

If we compare their average ratings in the league this season, then there is only one winner, as Tavernier’s incredible 7.76 average rating comfortably outscores Patterson’s 6.78 average, however, the 19-year-old is seemingly getting better with every game he plays and will be full of confidence at the moment.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Therefore, Gerrard has a big decision to make when it comes to deciding who to play at right-back in upcoming fixtures as both Patterson and Tavernier have been exceptional at times this season.

Teve atuações seguras durante a Olimpíada enquanto Rodrigo Caio esteve fora.

Gers fans love Roofe comments

Glasgow Rangers fans have been reacting to comments from Kemar Roofe on their Premiership title triumph.

The Gers were confirmed as champions almost two weeks ago, and they didn’t have to play. Their fierce rivals Celtic could only draw 0-0 with Dundee United, meaning they could no longer mathematically catch the Ibrox outfit. Cue pandemonium and jubilation amongst both the Gers players and the Gers supporters.

28-year-old Roofe was speaking to the Super Six Podcast about Rangers finally having their status as champions confirmed, and while he admitted it was fantastic to win the title regardless of the way they did it, a number of the club’s players wanted Celtic to beat the Tangerines so the title could be won at Parkhead the following week.

These comments were relayed on Twitter by The Scottish Sun, and as you can imagine, the Gers fans were absolutely delighted with what Roofe had to say. They took to the social media platform to share their pleasure.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the comments from Roofe below

Rangers suffer fresh blow ahead of Prague

Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has suffered a fresh blow ahead of their crucial Europa League tie this evening…

What’s the latest?

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Gerrard confirmed that midfield favourite Ryan Jack would not be involved as the Scottish Premiership champions host Slavia Prague, even though he is seemingly close to a return to action. Jack missed the first-leg tie, but Gerrard said at the time that he could have played but that the Rangers staff chose not to risk him.

Scotland were keen to have Jack as part of their squad, which Steven Gerrard has spoken to Steve Clarke about, which suggests he is close to a return, but tonight’s game, unfortunately, comes too soon for Jack to feature in, suggesting he’s had a bit of a setback, given that he was seemingly fit to play last week.

Gerrard said, via the Daily Record:

“I had a chat with Steve Clarke and obviously that will remain private.

“We’ve been in touch over Ryan and a few other players for some time now but I’m not going to divulge what gets said in the conversation. I don’t think that’s fair or respectful.

“We will make a decision on the weekend when we need to but he is ruled out for tomorrow’s game.”

The 29-year-old missed last week’s 1-1 draw in the Czech Republic and is now a major doubt for the Old Firm derby this weekend.

Bad news for Gerrard

Even though they’ve secured their first title in ten years, this update will come as a major setback for Gerrard and Rangers.

Jack has emerged as a regular starter when fit, with 16 of his 19 league appearances coming from the off, whilst he also started the big group games against Standard Liege and Benfica.

In terms of central midfield options this season, the Scottish powerhouse tops the charts for average WhoScored rating (7.03) ahead of veteran Steven Davis (7.01), Glen Kamara (6.93), Scott Arfield (6.67) and Bongani Zungu (6.26), so evidently, he’s Gerrard’s best man when available.

Speaking about the situation last week, the 40-year-old revealed he was “upset” by the injury and reinforced Jack’s influence to the side. He added: “He’s so important to us.”

Admittedly, he’s vital to Rangers’ fortunes – for creativity in the middle, there’s no one better as he’s managed one key pass per game, which is more than the aforementioned quartet of alternative options, whilst 1.1 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per match suggest he’s just as prominent defensively – only Davis betters such returns, via WhoScored.

It is this ability to read the game and snuff out any danger which could prove to be a big miss on the night, especially in such a huge fixture.

Ex-Gers star Thomas Buffel recently compared him to Barry Ferguson, which is high praise indeed. He told The Sun: “His consistency levels are incredible and he is the one player the manager can always rely on. He really reminds me of Barry — and that is the highest compliment I can pay him.”

If Gerrard’s side loses tonight, then their European dream is over for another season and their chances of finding a way past the Czech champions will be all that more harder without the industrious Jack pulling the strings in the engine room.

AVFC: Fans react to Harewood’s Watkins claim

Many fans of Aston Villa have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relayed Marlon Harewood’s claim regarding Ollie Watkins’ chances of making the England squad for the European Championships.

Speaking recently to Football FanCast (via Birmingham Mail), the former Aston Villa striker stated that, while he wouldn’t completely rule out Watkins making Gareth Southgate’s squad this summer, he couldn’t see the 25-year-old being ahead of the majority of the high-calibre forwards who will be available for selection for the Euros.

Having only joined Villa from Brentford last summer, the £75,000 per week centre-forward has already impressed hugely during his short time at Villa Park, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists over his 27 Premier League appearances, as well as averaging a WhoScored match rating of 7.23 – ranking him as the club’s third-best performer in the top flight.

However, after Aston Villa News shared their report on Twitter, many fans of the club flocked to have their say on the matter, with plenty appearing to be in agreement with Harewood’s assessment of Watkins’ chances of featuring at the Euros this summer.

So, what exactly did these Aston Villa fans have to say in reaction to Marlon Harwood’s claim regarding Ollie Watkins?

“He’s not ready yet, because of the competition with the likes of Kane and DCL. But, if he carries on performing in the Prem, then in the future he should definitely be considered for a call-up.”

@HKerecsenyi

“As much as I like Ollie I don’t think he is at that level at the moment, Southgate would probably have better options at this point. UTV.”

@FabledSage

“No (and I’m a Villa fan) – put 20 goals in a season in the Premier League for a season or 2 then maybe. Kane, Calvert-Lewin, Vardy (if he was inclined to) all above him at the mo.”

@steve_chaplin1

“Not yet, needs another year in the Prem and can work towards the World Cup squad.”

@markyboy84

“Being honest, no.”

@Mrb47016877

“No. Long way to go.”

@LeeClarke26

“Don’t be daft.”

@headmond81

“Not yet he isn’t ready still has lots to learn.”

Rangers were right to sanction Middleton loan

Glasgow Rangers have confirmed a loan move for one of their promising Ibrox young prospects.

What’s the word?

Glenn Middleton has joined St Johnstone on loan until the end of the season. The Rangers winger has settled for a loan stay at McDiarmid Park as he bids for more game time having struggled for minutes under Steven Gerrard this season.

A spirited Ryan Kent inspired Gerrard’s side to a 5-0 victory over Ross County, as goals from Kent, Filip Helander and Joe Aribo had them 3-0 up at half-time, with Ryan Jack and Connor Goldson adding the extras.

Should Kent succumb to injury, however, Gerrard may find himself short of options out wide, so it’s a big call from Ross Wilson to sanction such a move for Middleton.

Shrewd move

Back in December, The Daily Record’s Michael Gannon revealed the 21-year-old was set for the Ibrox exit amid interest from overseas.

Middleton has spent spells abroad with Norwich and Bradford City, but is yet to really make much of an impression in his home country.

Gerrard had hinted he could have a long-term future at Rangers after all after he impressed against Falkirk in the Betfred Cup, saying: “Glenn has been on loan and had injuries but he has been back within the group for four or five weeks now.

“He has been working hard and playing for an opportunity.

“We think he can do left-back, left-wingback or left-wing and it was a strong cameo from him.â€

However, he has found his chances hard to come by since Gerrard offered those words of encouragement, with his brief cameo against Falkirk his solitary appearance this season.

Saints boss Davidson is currently in desperate need of bolstering his firepower upfront, particularly on the wings, as left-wingers Craig Conway and Liam Craig aren’t getting any younger. Conway has four goals and two assists in the Premiership so far, that being the fourth-best behind the likes of Chris Kane, David Wotherspoon and Stevie May, as per Transfermarkt.

Despite his obvious struggles, Scotland U21 international MiddletonÂhas still scored five goals and supplied five assists in 29 games for the Gers.

Not only will this benefit his development, but Wilson’s shrewd move will also spare Gerrard a selection headache. Middleton has shown flashes of his potential but Kent has been nothing short of sensational this season and Wilson is paid to make these kinds of decisions.

There’s no denying the fact that he needs game time, something he isn’t going to get at Ibrox, at least for the time being, and another spell away from the club could do wonders for his career.
