Arsenal fans shocked as Torreira ban upheld

[ad_pod ]

Lucas Torreira’s three-match ban, given for his red card during the north London derby, has been upheld, per Sky Sports.

The Uruguay international was sent off in the closing stages of the 1-1 draw at Wembley after lunging into a challenge on Spurs full-back Danny Rose.

Referee Anthony Taylor showed Torreira a straight red card, meaning he was handed an automatic three-match suspension.

The club appealed that decision in the hope of reducing the ban but he will indeed be absent from games against Manchester United, Newcastle United and Everton after the ban was upheld.

Torreira has been a key member of Unai Emery’s squad this season and has played in every single Premier League game.

He could still be selected for the Europa League encounter against French club Rennes on Thursday.

Nevertheless, Gunners fans have been left shocked at the decision of the governing body. Indeed, many have pointed out that Rose made a high challenge on Bernd Leno, while Davinson Sanchez was alleged to have stamped on Laurent Koscielny at Wembley.

Manchester United fans on Phil Jones’ performance against Fulham

[ad_pod ]

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer drafted centre-back Phil Jones into his Manchester United starting XI on Saturday. The Red Devils’ fine form continued on the day with a 3-0 win over strugglers Fulham at Craven Cottage.

A Paul Pogba brace and a fine strike from Anthony Martial was enough to earn all three points for the visitors, who remain unbeaten under Solskjaer. The Norwegian coach will also be pleased to have seen his side keep another clean sheet, which Jones played his part in preserving.

On top of that, the 26-year-old also registered an assist for Martial’s goal, and came close to scoring himself when his long-range effort provoked a smart stop from Sergio Rico.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

The 27-cap England international recently signed a new long-term contract at Old Trafford. His performance against the Cottagers may have gone some way to convincing fans that offering him new terms was a smart move on United’s part.

After the game against Fulham, plenty of United fans took to Twitter to applaud Jones’ contribution…

Mauricio Pochettino should learn from Ange Postecoglu if Chelsea are to close the gap on high-flying Tottenham

The Argentine returns to north London for the first time on Monday, but the man in the opposing dugout is ensuring Spurs are finally moving on

Mauricio Pochettino finally makes his long-awaited return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday, but in circumstances that few could have predicted; rather than a heralded return to the home dugout after four years away, he will be taking his seat as the away manager, in charge of Spurs' fierce London rivals Chelsea.

That would have been a bitter pill to swallow for the Tottenham support if not for his Australian counterpart, Ange Postecoglou, who has turned the north Londoners' fortunes around and guided them to the upper echelons of the Premier League table. In doing so, has helped the club to finally move on from Pochettino, ending years of clamour for his return. His early success is made all the sweeter by Chelsea's coinciding struggles.

In their brief time in charge of their respective London foes, Postecoglou and Pochettino have enjoyed/endured contrasting fortunes, but Monday night will be a significant waypoint on both of their journeys. So, how do the two tacticians compare so far, and what lies ahead?

    Forging a togetherness

Both managers entered clubs that were close to breaking point in the summer, inheriting unhappy, disjointed squads that had underperformed significantly under the previous incumbents. Something that evidently topped their lists of priorities and underpinned their work throughout the summer and into the opening weeks of this season, then, was restoring some unity and fostering a togetherness. Both seem to have succeeded in good time.

Speaking recently, Pochettino said: "When you have an unsettled squad, always it's difficult and you lose time and then you need time to recover the time you lose. That's where we are. Maybe our performances are good but you need [something] extra, which is mental — a connection. It's energy to be all together, not to have different agendas in the squad. We need time to build that togetherness that you need when you are competing at this level."

Talking about the unity at Tottenham, newly-named club captain Son Heung-min said: "This is [being a] part of family. We are getting really, really tight in the changing room. Everyone is working for each other, running for each other, fighting for each other."

    Two elite man-managers

As renowned man-managers, it's little surprise that both have already managed to lift the gloom in their respective dressing rooms, but it seems to be a story of two very different approaches that have both yielded success.

Pochettino clearly likes to be hands-on and familiar with his Chelsea players, and his handling of Mykhailo Mudryk – who was bereft of confidence when the manager arrived but has had his self-esteem restored over the weeks and months since – is a shining example of that. The Argentine has taken the Ukrainian under his wing, worked with him on a one-on-one basis, even playing crossbar challenge with the winger, and provided support as both a manager and a friend.

Postecoglou, meanwhile, has been watchful from a distance, giving the Tottenham players more responsibility off the field as a collective in an attempt to empower them as individuals. The Australian said recently: "A lot of it has to be player-driven. I can sit there and paint the prettiest of pictures but they need to believe in it, they have to buy into it. As I keep saying, it’s their dressing room. They go there every day. I don’t go into the dressing room. And the environment is going to be key to us being successful."

    Contrasting fortunes

That is largely where the similarities between the two coaches' journeys to this point end. After a slow start and having ridden their luck at times, Postecoglou has his side battling right at the top of the Premier League as we enter November and – more importantly in the eyes of many a Spurs fan – they are back to playing the front-footed, attacking brand of football last seen under (you guessed it) Pochettino.

Things have not been so smooth for Pochettino and Chelsea. On his return to English football, the Tottenham favourite oversaw the Blues' worst start to a season in 45 yearsin the midst of an injury crisis. There were always the shoots of recovery, though, as Chelsea vastly underperformed their xG, and they enjoyed a timely resurgence in October as they hallmarks of Pochettino's MO began to shine through.

However, a dire home defeat to Brentford seems to have knocked them back to square one.

    Targeted changes vs complete overhaul

One of the main obstacles to immediate success for Pochettino – as was always likely to be the case – has been integrating a raft of new signings after overseeing a fire sale of unhappy and unwanted players.

His north London counterpart benefitted from very few of the club's regular first-team starters moving on, and Postecoglou signed off on just a few targeted signings to improve the side in certain areas of the pitch, such as James Maddison.

Pochettino, meanwhile, has had to contend with 21 outgoings, including the likes of Mason Mount and N'Golo Kante, whom he surely would have wanted to work with, as well as 11 newcomers – the vast majority of whom were young and unproven in the Premier League. Getting them to gel was never going to be instantaneous, and the head coach has already lamented the amount of business done in the summer. "At the moment, I think we are a young team, a young team means too many changes in the summer because of the circumstances and we are suffering – sometimes good and bad results, but performances are consistent," he said.

When you also factor in the malaise that enveloped Stamford Bridge throughout a nightmarish 2022-23 campaign on and off the field, it is little surprise that it has taken four months to see even the earliest signs of improvement at Chelsea.

That is not to detract from Postecoglou's work, however; three of Tottenham's main summer signings in Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario, as well as returning loanee Destiny Udogie, have all been performing at an exceptional level from the off, which is a complete anomaly in the unpredictable world of transfer dealings.

Nicolas Pepe has returned from injury and played a part in the 1-1 draw against Angers, so should be in line to start again on Saturday. Nice do have a number of injured personnel, though, with Youcef Atal, Mattia Viti, Sofiane Diop and Jordan Lotomba unavailable.

Nice will hope for big performances from the likes of Kasper Schmeichel and Terem Moffi if they are to get a result, while the experience of players such as Aaron Ramsey could be crucial.

The biggest absence for PSG is, of course, Neymar, who is out of action for the remainder of the 2022-23 season due to an ankle injury. Presnel Kimpembe is another long-term absentee, with the defender expected to miss a portion of next season too.

There are concerns over Sergio Ramos' availability as the Spaniard resumes full training after a calf injury, but he could be involved. Having failed to hit the net in the last two games, PSG will require Kylian Mbappe, who has 19 league goals to his name, and Lionel Messi, who has scored 13, to add to their respective tallies.

David Beckham's Real Madrid debut – Who were his teammates and where are they now?

The English winger made his debut for Real Madrid against Mallorca in the first leg of the Super Copa de Espana…

Former England star David Beckham moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2003 leaving Manchester United after playing at the club for 11 years.

The winger was an addition to the existing Galacticos of Real Madrid which had started in 2000 with the arrival of Luis Figo. Beckham joined a host of star players like Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Raul and Roberto Carlos at Los Blancos.

After becoming the third English player to join the club in July 2003, Beckham made his competitive debut for the club in the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana against Mallorca on August 24, 2003, at the Son Moix, Palma de Mallorca. Luis Figo had opened the scoring for Madrid but the hosts came back and won the tie 2-1.

Real Madrid, though, thrashed Mallorca 3-0 in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu to clinch the trophy. Other than Raul and Ronaldo, David Beckham also found the back of the net to help the club clinch the trophy.

Here, we take a look at who the teammates of David Beckham were in that particular match and where they are now.

    1Raul Bravo – Sub

The Spanish defender played at Real Madrid for six seasons from 2001 to 2007. In between, he had moved on loan to Leeds United in 2003. Other than Real Madrid, he also played for Olympiacos. He retired from professional football in 2007.

After retiring in 2011, he became an assistant coach in PSG and worked at the club for two seasons. In 2014 he joined French club Bastia where he worked as the head coach for six months. He also worked as an assistant coach at Premier League Swansea City for a brief period in 2017 before joining Belgian club Eupen as their manager. Since 2019, he is working at Chelsea as a technical mentor.

Hazlewood calls for Australia to play more T20s

Josh Hazlewood has called for Cricket Australia to organise more T20 internationals in the lead-up to such big-ticket events

Arun Venugopal in Kolkata12-Mar-2016

Australia’s record in World T20 events is a rather curious anomaly for a team that has generally bossed ICC events. The general perception – no doubt a result of holding Australia to the exalted standards they have set for themselves in the 50-over World Cup – is they have flopped in each of the five previous editions of the World T20, but in reality they have been hit or miss. Australia have managed two semi-finals and a final but have not made the knockouts in their other two attempts; in fact, their campaign in 2009 lasted a mere three days. Some would suggest that Australia have rarely taken Twenty20 cricket seriously enough, despite their players being highly sought after in leagues across the world, not to mention the recent popularity of the Big Bash. The players disagree with such a notion but, undoubtedly, there is recognition that they need to play a greater number of T20Is.In the last 12 months Australia have played only seven T20Is; among the eight top-ranked teams only England (7) and West Indies (2) have played that number or fewer. Pakistan (17), India (15), Sri Lanka (13) and South Africa (11) have played a considerably higher number of matches, with India and Sri Lanka stacking their calendar to such an extent that they have played eleven and nine matches respectively since the new year.Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood reckoned his team would do well to adopt a similar approach and called for Cricket Australia to organise more T20 internationals in the lead-up to such big-ticket events.”We obviously don’t play as much T20 cricket as some of the other nations, and even in these conditions we don’t play as much,” he told journalists in Kolkata.”I think we definitely could play T20 a little bit more leading into big tournaments like this and probably in conditions that we are going to face in the tournament. In the future that’s something that we have to look at. It [India playing many games] is smart leading into a T20 tournament, to play a lot of that format that you are going to play. I think we are getting better at it but I think we still need to improve it.”John Hastings, Hazlewood’s pace-bowling partner, agreed with the observation of their captain, Steven Smith, that the absence of many regular players from the Test and ODI side hurt Australia. He also felt that the heavy turnover of players didn’t afford them much time to figure out their roles in the team.”I think mainly it’s because we haven’t probably had a settled line-up over the years where the guys are resting at the back of a Test tour or a one day tour,” he said. “There’s been a lot of different players coming through and making their debuts for Australia in T20 cricket. So when you are always chopping and changing, it’s difficult to have a really defined role in the side on what you want to get of it and what the team needs you to do.”Smith, however, was confident about Australia’s chances given the number of players in the team who had knowledge of Indian conditions.”Traditionally we haven’t done as well as we would have liked in this format. This is a tournament that has eluded us so we’re here to try and win it,” he said. “We have all certainly played a lot of T20 cricket. We know how to play the game and if we do it to the best of our ability we are going to be a tough side to beat.”I think IPL has been great in the development of a lot of players from all around the world. The experiences we have had from the IPL will hold us in good stead for this tournament. A lot of us know what to expect, what the conditions are going to be like. What it’s like playing in front of big crowds here in India. We’re really excited.”Hastings said Australia’s 2-1 win in their recent T20 international series against South Africa was an injection of positive energy just ahead of the World T20. “It’s been great that this last two weeks in South Africa we have had a pretty settled team,” he said. “It’s the same fifteen that are going to be with us right through for the next three weeks. I think that will hold us in better shape now [since] we know our guys inside out. Now it’s about going out and executing our skills.”

Karun breaks second season jinx

Before Monday, Karun Nair had almost joined the list of players who failed to replicate a successful first season in the second

AMOL KARHADKAR IN MUMBAI09-Mar-2015Dhawal Kulkarni. Abhimanyu Mithun. Suryakumar Yadav. All of them had exceptional maiden first-class seasons. All of them failed to replicate their success in the next. At the end of the Ranji Trophy semi-finals, Karun Nair had almost joined the list. Then came Monday. On the second day of the Ranji final, Karun showed his skills as a middle-order batsman. He was patient and persevered to remain unbeaten after batting for more than seven hours to emphasis Karnataka’s dominance.Naturally, Karun was relieved and elated with his effort. “I think this is the best and most special because it has come in a Ranji final and I hadn’t got any hundreds in this season. I was really looking forward to and hoping that I get one, so this is the most special,” he told reporters after his unbeaten 130 against Tamil Nadu.”I’ve been working hard so I was looking forward to such an opportunity. I think I was getting a lot of 30s, and I was getting out on one wrong ball.”So what was hampering him this season? Failing to cope with expectations? Being found out by the opposition teams? Trying too hard?.”Not so long ago, he was trying to cement his place in the Karnataka team. Suddenly he scored those three centuries and he was picked for India A. For a guy who was trying to cement his place in the Ranji side, it was too much to handle the pressure on the young shoulders of suddenly being in the selectors’ contention,” J Arunkumar, Karnataka’s batting coach, told ESPNcricinfo.”At some stage, many youngsters start wondering whether they should do something different. But Karun is a confident cricketer. He was quite relaxed since he knew he was hitting the ball well.”Karun made his debut midway through the 2013-14 season and made headlines by scoring centuries in successive games against Delhi, Uttar Pradesh in the quarter-final and Punjab in the semi-final. That was followed by a successful stint with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL – 330 runs at an average of 33 and strike rate of 142.24 – and Karun was in Australia with the India A squad last July.Since then, however, his form has slumped. After only one fifty in the first seven games, Karnataka decided to rest him for the last league game against Mumbai. Karun was asked to play the CK Nayudu Under-23 Trophy quarter-final and the move paid off as he scored a century and regained confidence. It reflected in his performance in the Ranji semi-final against Mumbai. His unbeaten 49 in the first innings was crucial in Karnataka digging themselves out of a hole and he has followed it up with a remarkable innings in the final. He came to the crease at 16 for 3 last evening, saw off the day and built an innings that could end up being match-winning.If he continues in the same vein, Tamil Nadu will be forced to field for three days, just like they did in their last final appearance, against Rajasthan in 2011-12.

Aliás, o histórico do meia no Brasileirão é bastante positivo.

Veja o ranking:
