Arsenal almost signed Phillip Cocu during his playing days

Phillip Cocu has told The People he could have joined Arsenal during his career.

What’s the story?

The former Netherlands international replaced Frank Lampard as Derby County boss in the summer, but before becoming a manager, he had a successful playing career, winning four Eredivisie titles with PSV Eindhoven and La Liga with Barcelona.

He had been talking about those days as a defensive midfielder and said: “I was playing for my first professional club, Vitesse Arnhem, when Arsenal came for me.

“Then, halfway through my career, when I was about to sign a new contract at Barcelona, there was a second chance. But in both cases, the clubs could not agree.

“They have the bigger mentality” – Spurs fans come to blows after the North London Derby in the video below…

Cocu instead of Vieira?

The 48-year-old was with Vitesse between 1990 and 1995 before moving on to PSV and FC Barcelona. He would end up making 540 appearances between the two clubs and also earned 100 caps for his country. It is fair to say he was one of the best defensive midfielders of his generation.

Had he made the switch to north London, he would have no doubt improved the Gunners. However, his arrival may have prevented the signing of the legendary Patrick Vieira. The France World Cup winner joined Arsenal in 1996 just before Arsene Wenger was appointed as the club’s manager.

The two were defensive midfielders, and there is no reason to believe that Cocu wouldn’t have been able to produce the same level of performances in the Premier League as he did in the Eredivisie and La Liga. As such, Vieira’s signing may not have been needed at all.

What would Wenger’s reign look like without the former Juventus hard-man, or indeed the English footballing landscape as a whole?

Vieira had a huge impact on the Arsenal side, and was a part of the famous Invincibles. Would Arsenal have had the same success without him commanding the middle of the park?

Unfortunately, it is a question we will never know the answer to. But it is hard to imagine Arsenal fans crying over the comments. After all, in Vieira, they got their hands on one of the best midfielders in Premier League history.

Man United fans lavish praise on Raheem Sterling following treble

[ad_pod ]

Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as Manchester City recorded a 5-0 win over West Ham United on the opening weekend of the 2019-20 Premier League season.

It was yet another terrific performance from the 24-year-old, who has now netted four times in two appearances this term following his effort against Liverpool in the Community Shield last weekend.

Sterling scored 25 goals and provided 18 assists in 51 appearances in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side during the 2018-19 campaign.

But he looks capable of beating that total this time around.

And a number of Manchester United fans have taken to social media to comment on the England international.

Despite the immense rivalry between the two teams, the United supporters cannot help but appreciate the player that Sterling has become under Guardiola.

Ian Rush and Juventus were far from a match made in heaven

[ad_pod ]

Right from the top let’s dispel a long-standing myth. Ian Rush never actually said that his season-long stint in Italy was ‘like living in a foreign country’. It’s a great line and we want it to be true. But sadly it’s not.

Many years later the prolific striker blamed a mischievous Kenny Dalglish for the erroneous quote saying: “When he re-signed me, a reporter asked me, “Why have you come back?” Kenny quipped, “He said it was like playing in a foreign country”. He’s got a lot to answer for!”

All the same though it remains illuminating because in an era when it was highly unusual for a British footballer to ply his trade abroad the comment – displaying a complete ignorance to sporting cultures beyond the English league – was considered plausible. That’s what is of interest. Not whether the Welshman was actually responsible for such a silly utterance, but that people thought he might be.

This was in the late-eighties of course: a few years before the sparkling, brand-new Premier League brought an influx of overseas talent to our shores making it infinitely more cosmopolitan in the process and a couple of years too prior to the game-changer that was Italia ’90. It was a different, smaller world back then.

It was in July of 1986 that the Turin giants swooped for the forward – trademark ‘tache and all – for a British record transfer fee of £3.2m before he was promptly loaned back to Anfield for a further season and this was at a time when English football was decidedly parochial. There were no trequartistas. There was no pasta, only pints. All that mattered really were three things: teams played in a 4-4-2 formation on muddy pitches. Liverpool won the league every year. And Ian Rush fired the goals that won them the leagues.

And oh boy did he score goals. From the moment the Merseysiders signed the skinny 18-year-old from Chester City in 1980 Rush ferreted out chances with an unparalleled instinct and finished them with an unnerving clinical eye. If his second spell at Liverpool is included he fired home 346 goals in 660 appearances, winning every piece of silverware imaginable several times over while his partnership up front with Dalglish has gone down in legend.

That was the player Juventus were signing; uprooting him from his parochial hunting grounds to repeat his remarkable potency on sun-drenched Serie A pitches: they were signing arguably the most lethal front-man Britain had ever produced.

How this was possible largely lay in the banning of English clubs from European competition following the Heysel tragedy. Domestic clubs – even the all-conquering Liverpool – were not the financial powerhouses they are today, which left them susceptible to having their best players snatched by the wealthier European elite and that was especially true now as the players in question began to miss pitting their wits against the best the continent could offer. So it was that in the same week that Rush left for Turin, Mark Hughes departed Manchester United for Barcelona.

But back to Hughes’ international team-mate and his joining of a side that had won the Scudetto nine times in their previous 15 campaigns. It was a team packed with household names, not least the majestic duo of Michael Laudrup and Michel Platini. Now they had the deadliest striker around in their company and lord help the rest.

Only it didn’t turn out quite like that, even if to state that Rush’s twelve months on the peninsula was a failure would be to indulge in another long-standing myth; or perhaps, more accurately, a half-myth.

That season Juventus finished a disappointing sixth, trailing to a resurgent AC Milan and Maradona-inspired Napoli. For Rush’s part he scored a respectable number in the circumstances, a number he has defended since:  “I didn’t do as badly as everybody tries to make out. I scored 13 league and cup goals in my only season and was top scorer at the club.”

And those circumstances add up. They compile to a mitigating collection in fact.

On his debut against Lecce the player burdened with a huge transfer fee and expectation to score in each and every game pulled a thigh muscle, leaving him side-lined for five weeks. It can only be assumed how difficult those five weeks were given that Laudrup was the only other English-speaking player at the club. Furthermore, Juventus were undergoing a period of transition, having signed seven new players that summer. Indeed the departing Platini even warned Rush of this saying: “You’ve come at the wrong time to Juventus. You should have been here 2-3 years ago when we had a better team.”

Most detrimental of all, however, was the fact that the Old Lady regularly played to stereotype, erring on the side of caution as Rush explained to the Guardian in 2005: “(We) were happy to get 0-0 draws away from home. That negative approach didn’t play to my strengths. I would have been better joining Mark Hughes and Gary Lineker playing under Terry Venables at Barcelona.”

In the summer of 1988 Ian Rush returned to the familiar turf of Anfield for a fee of £2.8m and went on to score a further 90 goals in 225 starts. The master was back doing what he did best, doing what he did better than anybody else.

Was his short time in Italy a failure? Harshly put, maybe it was though too much has been made of it since. It occurred in a time of ignorance, when adaptation to another culture – both on and off the pitch – was substantially harder than it is today.

It occurred long ago when the world was smaller, a time that evokes the famous L.P. Hartley quote: the past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.

Aston Villa’s Kodjia in fine form heading into new season

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Aston Villa may have only just touched down in Minnesota for their pre-season tour, but there is one player who has already begun to put his name firmly in the hat for selection ahead of the new campaign.

Through the door have arrived seven new faces since the Villans achieved promotion back in May.

There have been a host of defensive incomings whilst three attacking players in Wesley, Anwar El Ghazi and Jota have also been snapped up.

The former was signed for a considerable £22m and on the fee alone, you’d expect him to walk into the team on the opening day of the season.

Of course, there is a long way to go before they face Tottenham and how individuals do in pre-season will likely determine Dean Smith’s side as they travel to north London.

However, Jonathan Kodjia, who after the arrival of Wesley was perhaps an outside bet to start, has shown signs he won’t be giving up lightly.

The Ivorian found himself behind Tammy Abraham in the pecking order last term, sometimes being deployed as a winger. Despite that, he found himself in good form towards the back end of the season, netting three in his last six outings for the Villans.

Yet it’s at the Africa Cup of Nations where he’s shown his true colours, providing evidence that he’ll be ready and raring to go in the Premier League.

His nation were dumped out of the tournament at the hands of Algeria last Thursday but his performance was particularly good, ensuring they conceded for the first time in the tournament.

As well as scoring in the quarter-finals last week, he found the net against South Africa whilst also laying on an assist against Mali.

Versus Algeria, he was particularly dynamic, completing two dribbles and also winning three aerial duels.

His physical presence was particularly important over the course of the competition, drawing two fouls from the opposition every 90 minutes.

And it’s these types of performances that Smith will need from him next season.

Whether that be on the right or as a central striker, his commitment last season was unquestionable and he’ll be exactly the type of squad player they need in the Premier League.

It feels unlikely he’ll be a regular starter but he’s done his absolute best this summer to prove he perhaps deserves to be.

You’ll be missed: Liverpool fans hail the outgoing Alberto Moreno

[ad_pod ]

Alberto Moreno will officially leave Liverpool when his contract with the Champions League holders expires at the end of this month.

The 26-year-old joined the Reds from Sevilla in August 2014 and has gone on to make 141 appearances for the English outfit in all competitions.

Moreno only played two Premier League matches during the 2018-19 campaign, however, due to the stunning form of Andrew Robertson at left-back.

Things have not worked out for the four-time Spain international at Anfield.

However, there is absolutely no question that clubs will be lining up to sign him on a free transfer ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Liverpool fans have not always been kind to Moreno due to some dodgy performances during his time on Merseyside.

Obsessed: Liverpool fans react after a Man City fan bizarrely rants about Salah

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after a Manchester City fan was recorded bursting into the press section at Wembley on Saturday to explicitly rant about his team’s lack of coverage in the media, whilst namedropping Mohamed Salah.

The clearly disgruntled fan was holding his plastic City flag when he lambasted the lack of coverage his team have been getting after their hugely successful season, and told the onlooking journalists that they’ll probably have Salah on the back pages after the 6-0 FA Cup final win.

Luis Suarez certainly had no qualms about celebrating against his former employers in the video below…

Extremely odd behaviour. Imagine your team becoming the first English side ever to win the domestic treble, and all that’s on your mind is Liverpool and the media’s coverage of them. Enjoy the occasion!

This is a sentiment that a number of Reds supporters on Twitter have echoed. Some have called the Citizens a small club, several have rightfully declared the moment as embarrassing and others have commented on how obsessed they are.

Let’s take a look at what the Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying about the bizarre outburst…

"As usual always late!" – Man United fans fume after Julian Brandt report

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United fans on Twitter have slammed the club's profligacy in the transfer market after news emerged that the Red Devils missed out on a deal to sign Julian Brandt despite making a late enquiry for the new Borussia Dortmund attacker.

Dortmund splashed out £22.1m to sign the 23-year old winger after an excellent season at Bayer Leverkusen in which he scored seven Bundesliga goals and added 14 assists.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, United enquired about Brandt's availability last week only to find out that the German international had already chosen to join Dortmund.

The Bundesliga runners-up have moved swiftly in the transfer market, confirming deals this week for Brandt as well as Thorgan Hazard in a combined £45m splurge.

Linked to nearly every name under the sun, United fans on Twitter have been left frustrated at the club's slow speed of business and seeming inability to get a deal over the line.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross being eyed by West Brom

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun on Sunday, (14/04 page 61) Sunderland manager Jack Ross is on the Midlands club’s radar as they seek to replace Darren Moore.

What’s the word?

Ross left St Mirren in the summer to take over the Black Cats and he has them currently sitting in third place with 80 points, two behind Barsnley but with a game in hand.

The Scotsman has also led his team to the final of the Checkatrade Trophy only to lose on penalties to Portsmouth, Lee Cattermole missing the vital spot-kick.

Sunderland are well placed for automatic promotion and this form has seemingly led to West Brom holding an interest in making him their manager.

The Black Cats have been hard to beat and this would no doubt play a part in West Brom wanting the 42-year-old to take them over next season.

But Sunderland have drawn far too many games, 17 in all, and if he were to take over the Midlands club he would have to convert those stalemates into wins.

How would Sunderland deal with Ross leaving?

Ross has built a squad capable of promotion, but it would need a lot of work if they were to be promoted to the Championship next season.

Looking at the current squad, Aiden McGeady, Bryan Oviedo, Grant Leadbitter, Chris Maguire and Will Grigg are the only players who are good enough for the Championship – they do have some talented youngsters but they lack second-tier experience, except George Honeyman.

If a switch to the Hawthorns materialises, Ross won’t be there to oversee that potential transition, and a new manager with different ideas may well disrupt the process.

But Sunderland fans would not be able to begrudge Ross if he did move to West Brom because they are better placed to get back into the Premier League than their North East counterparts. Surely the 42-year-old would relish a chance to manage at the peak of the English game.
