Taylor banks on seam attack

Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor earmarked his seamers to lead the team’s challenge in the Khulna Test, citing their ability to reverse the ball

Devashish Fuloria in Khulna02-Nov-2014The trio of Zimbabwe seamers had been productive in Dhaka, compensating for the lack of experience in the spin department. Tinashe Panyangara, Elton Chigumbura and Tendai Chatara handled 65% of the bowling load and picked up 12 off the 14 wickets to fall to the bowlers. That’s 85% of the total output. So it was no wonder that Brendan Taylor again earmarked the seamers to lead the team’s challenge despite the Khulna pitch not promising the bounce of Dhaka. On a drier surface, Taylor said his seamers would still be in play with their ability to reverse swing the ball.”Yes, they do (have the skill to reverse the ball). It’s an abrasive surface and the ball will get scuffed up,” Taylor said. “They have done it in Test matches at home where the pitches have been less rough. I have no doubt they can do it here. I don’t think there is going to be that kind of bounce, but I think our bowlers have the skill and control to contain and take wickets.”Zimbabwe’s spinners had appeared toothless in Dhaka on a pitch in which the opposition spinners had run through the batting. Tafadzwa Kamungozi and Natsai M’Shangwe neither showed control nor displayed ability to turn the ball, but asked if the two bowlers were dicey starters in Khulna, Taylor said it was a big topic of discussion, though a decision had not been made.”We have got reserves in our spin department but we have yet to sit down with the coach and the convenor of selectors to make a decision on that,” Taylor said. “It has been a big topic of discussion and we are going to do it this evening, and see how we can fine tune our spin department.”We are not as blessed as Bangladesh in our spin department. We proved to be a good unit in Dhaka with our seam bowlers. Yes we are aware the pitch is going to be different but we have got what we’ve got and we’ve got to make use of it.If Taylor was discounting on his team’s capability in the spin department, it would mean extra pressure on the other two areas – seam-bowling and batting. And there appears to be a serious handicap in one of them – their ability to handle spin, which would leave the side heavily dependent on their seamers to strike.”Our seam bowlers are good enough to adapt,” Taylor said. “I feel they are good enough to strike with the new ball, I feel they are good enough to reverse the ball. That’s a danger to any batsman when the ball is reversing and hopefully we can do that.”The memory of losing seven wickets to spin in a session on the third morning would still be fresh for Zimbabwe. More than the collapse, it was the manner of it which would have created a few doubts. It’s not their batsmen are novices against the turning ball – most of them have played cricket in this part of the world – but in the third Test, they were ruthlessly exposed. If repeated, it’s a mistake that will lose Zimbabwe the series but Taylor said his batsmen were determined to prove otherwise.”We have worked really hard,” he said. “We have done some specific spin drills to counter their spinners. But in saying that, they are going to turn up and make it very difficult for us. They play extremely well at home. But we have played a number of times. We were very sloppy in Dhaka in losing our wickets, so our batters are pretty determined right now. We would like to prove to everybody that we are good players of spin.”A look back at the last Test played on this ground would allay some fears. Both Bangladesh and West Indies’ batsmen had feasted on flat batting conditions. The pitch holds a similar promise but can Zimbabwe’s batsmen rise to support their seamers?

Rare win keeps Northants in last-eight hunt

Maurice Chambers produced a career-best haul as Northamptonshire kept alive their hopes of a place in the quarter-finals of the Royal London Cup with a 19-run Duckworth-Lewis win over struggling Lancashire at Old Trafford.Chambers struck three times in the first six overs of the Lightning’s pursuit of 201 in a 40-over game, leaving the score at 25 for 3, after rain had delayed the start of this Group A clash by two hours. The rain returned with Lancashire, who now cannot qualify for the last eight, at 47 for 3 after 10.1 overs and a long way off the pace in terms of D/L. Play did not restart. This was only Northamptonshire’s second win in seven in the competition, but it meant victory over Essex at home in their final group game next Thursday – coupled with other results going their way – would be enough for a top-four finish and progression. Bottom-placed Lancashire have now lost five out of seven group matches and all three of their home matches.Northamptonshire were also thankful to South African overseas opener Richard Levi as his 68 off 43 balls, with 13 fours and a six, underpinned what looked only to be a fighting total at best. He reached 50 off 31, with 46 of those runs coming in boundaries as the Steelbacks notched 80 runs off the first 10 overs.Lancashire left-arm spinner Stephen Parry, who has struggled for form in limited-overs cricket since returning from the World Twenty20 with England in late March, was the pick of their bowlers with a season’s best 3 for 23 from eight.Parry helped fashion an impressive recovery in tandem with Steven Croft’s offspinners as Northamptonshire only scored 120 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the last 30 overs. Croft added 1 for 29 from his allocation of eight. The visitors lost 3 for 11 inside five overs – two to Parry and one to Croft – as they slipped from 125 for 2 in the 21st. Parry, on England Lions duty earlier this week, had Kyle Coetzer caught at long-off and Adam Rossington caught at midwicket off a leading edge before Croft had Ben Duckett caught at short third man on the reverse sweep.Parry had Rob Keogh caught and bowled as Northamptonshire struggled to up the rate again and lost three further wickets in the last 10 overs. Graeme White’s 21 off 31 at least helped get them to 200, which proved to be enough thanks to Chambers. He had List A debutant Luis Reece caught at first slip in the fourth over before getting Karl Brown caught at short cover and Paul Horton, who had earlier elected to bowl, bowled off an inside edge with successive balls in the sixth.

'Suryakumar could play for India one day' – Sehwag

A round-up of IPL news on May 8, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff08-May-2014Virender Sehwag has said Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Suryakumar Yadav has the talent to play for India in the future.”More than the batsmen, it’s the bowlers,” Sehwag told , when asked which players have impressed him during this IPL season. “Sandeep Sharma and Mohit Sharma are the two guys who have impressed me the most. As far as batsmen are concerned, I really like the look of Suryakumar Yadav. He seems like a very good talent and if he continues to focus, he has the ability to score a lot of runs in the future and also maybe play for India one day.”I like the fact that Sandeep can swing the ball in as well as take it away. Also, he has tremendous control over his bowling. For us, he has been very vital because he gives us early breakthroughs, in the first or second over, which is very important in this format.”‘Opening is my bread and butter’ – UthappaSince moving up to the top of the order, Robin Uthappa has been in roaring form, his three innings as opener bringing him scores of 47, 65 and 47 at a strike rate of 128.23. Uthappa says he told the Kolkata Knight Riders team management he was at his most comfortable while opening the batting, and they gave him the opportunity to do so.”I am loving it!” he told , when asked about the move up the order. “It is where I feel at home; that is my bread and butter. So, I just love opening the batting. I think that’s where I do the best and that is something I was telling the support staff and Gautam, and I had a conversation with them about it. I am glad that they gave me an opportunity and that I have been able to utilise that opportunity in a way that has been meaningful for the team.”‘Bowlers should work on outwitting batsmen’ – SrinathJavagal Srinath says bowlers are becoming too dependent on batsmen’s mistakes to get their wickets, and aren’t able to outwit them on their own.”What concerns me is the fact that the wicket-taking ability of a bowler is now directly linked to batsmen making mistakes in their desire to look for big scores,” he writes, in his column for the . “I think it is about time the bowlers started to think harder on what they can do not only to restrict the scoring, but also pick up wickets.”So where do the bowlers go from here? That is the challenge ahead of the specialist coaches and the sports psychologist who travel with most teams. It’s time for them to focus on giving bowlers confidence and in coming up with something that will help their discipline. Unlike batsmen, bowlers are a lot more apprehensive about what the day holds. Agreed that at the end of the day, it’s the wickets that matter, but there is a huge difference between a batsman getting himself out and a bowler outwitting a batsman.”

Upbeat India prepare for England test

India Under-19s will hope their batsmen can give them a decisive advantage as they meet England Under-19s in the World Cup quarter-final on Saturday

Kanishkaa Balachandran in Dubai21-Feb-2014The mood in the Indian camp, on the eve of their quarter-final, was jovial at the picturesque ICC Academy in Dubai, just behind the game’s headquarters. The fielding drill looked anything but boring and the players were raring to go. India have proved so far that their showing in the practice games – they lost both the matches – wasn’t much to go by, having not dropped a single game in the group stage. Despite those wins, their coach B Arun said the team was yet to peak. He was referring to the top-order batting, which was identified as India’s strength before the tournament started but hasn’t been consistent. In their first two games, against Pakistan and Scotland, India were in trouble at 94 for 4 and 19 for 4 respectively and needed rescuing from their lower order. The problem didn’t resurface against easier opponents Papua New Guinea, but tougher tests await them in the knockouts. Arun was not too worried about the batting order facing up to England’s pace-centric attack.”Yes it hasn’t clicked as we would have expected. In a big tournament there are bound to be butterflies and the over-eagerness to perform also,” Arun said. “Now they have kind of settled down and will hopefully peak at the right time.”Sarfaraz Khan has been the revelation in the middle order, as has the understated allrounder Deepak Hooda. Against Scotland, the pair came together after India lost their top five batsmen for 22, making the 89-run target look distant. Together, Sarfaraz and Hooda ensured India did not suffer further losses. Arun denied the perception that the team got carried away against an easier opponent.”Definitely not complacency,” Arun said. “There were maybe one or two good balls, plus a bad decision (referring to Sanju Samson’s lbw). In such a situation you don’t expect to bat before lunch and suddenly three-four wickets fall. It’s a pretty good lesson for us.”The spinners from both sides were more than a handful, with Kuldeep Yadav taking a hat-trick, but Arun said the pitch for the game against Scotland was not the reason for a collapse.”The devils were not in the pitch. It was in the mind,” Arun said. “If you look at Akhil’s (Herwadkar) shot, it was a wide ball and he played the cut but got the edge.”England are an unfamiliar opponent for India, for the teams have not played each other between the World Cups. Their last clash was in a one-dayer during the Quadrangular series in Townsville in 2012, which India won by 63 runs.In this tournament, England have played out a high percentage of dot balls – 178 and 189 against Sri Lanka and New Zealand respectively – and Arun said there were no specific plans to target their weaknesses.”Every team that plays well normally plays about 55% scoring shots and 45% dots,” Arun said. “Sometimes statistics don’t tell you anything. We’ll just focus on what we need to do and our bowlers to bowl on areas they need to bowl. If we do that, it is about trying to dictate what the batsman should be doing rather than looking at the batsman’s strengths.”India made two changes for their match against Papua New Guinea, bringing in Shreyas Iyer and Monu Kumar and the coach said the XI for the quarter-final will be decided after looking at the pitch.England trained at the Fairgrounds Oval in the Dubai Men’s College campus in the afternoon. They, too, could have entered the quarters with a 100%-win record had they not lost a nail-biter against Sri Lanka. Tim Boon, the England coach, said India will be their biggest test yet in playing under pressure.”Every team now has access to each other’s video footage,” Boon said. “It’s a great learning curve for our boys to see how they play under pressure.”India have been formidable over the last two seasons in whatever competition they have gone for, however we are focusing our attention in what we do well.”Boon said the high percentage of dot balls in their last two matches wasn’t an issue. Against New Zealand, England recovered from a slow 91 for 4 after 30 overs to 229 for 8.”What I liked about our batting was that we had some wickets till the end,” Boon said. “Then, we were able to up the strike-rate at the end. Yes, there were a couple of little learnings in that, but that’s the beauty about World Cup cricket – to test yourself against the best young talents in the world.”

Bowlers star in New Zealand win

Pacers Sian Ruck and Rachel Candy, and legspinner Erin Bermingham picked up two wickets each, as a sudden batting collapse from West Indies Women helped New Zealand Women secure a nine-run win in a low-scoring encounter in Bridgetown

Stafanie Taylor, who top-scored with a 36-ball 24, was then soon removed by medium-pacer Nicola Browne, leaving West Indies at 57 for 3, and needing 45 from a run a ball. The hosts tried to push on, but couldn’t recover from their top-order wobble, as the other batters could only add 35 in the remaining overs . A paltry 10 each from Kyshona Knight and Stacy-Ann King aside, no one else could produce more than six runs, as Candy and Ruck stifled West Indies’ middle and lower order to restrict them to 91 for 8 in 20 overs.New Zealand, electing to bat, were earlier helped largely by a 30-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Maddie Green and Rachel Priest, enabling them to recover from a loss of early wickets. Shaquana Quintyne, the leading wicket-taker of the the tournament, followed up her five-for in the previous game against England Women with two more wickets, dismissing Sophie Devine and Katie Perkins for her sixth and seventh scalps of the series. The visitors were precariously placed at 50 for 4 after 11.2 overs, but Priest added a late surge by blasting three fours and a six during her 17-ball 26, to help take New Zealand to 101.

Rutherford lays down Test marker with hundred

ScorecardHamish Rutherford’s innings was studded with off-side drives•Getty Images

Hamish Rutherford warmed-up for the Test series next week with an aggressive hundred against England Lions as the second-string bowlers failed to impress at Grace Road before rain wiped out half the overs.Although New Zealand won against Derbyshire, their top order did not cover themselves in glory against what was largely a reserve county attack. The line-up facing them here is a significant step up, and an important increase in intensity ahead of the Test match, although only Graham Onions produced the consistency required on a blustery day, which appeared to impact the bowlers’ rhythmsRutherford’s innings, coming after the visitors were inserted on a green pitch that offered less than appeared likely, contained the hallmarks of his debut series in March: a strong preference for the off side, an attacking mindset, but also the propensity to offer bowlers a chance with a lack of footwork when he drives. He knows the value of warm-up runs, having made 90 in Queenstown before his Test debut where he made 171, and with his only previous cricket in the British Isles coming during two seasons in Scotland, but he also knows this is not his most important innings.”It doesn’t really matter scoring them in the warm-up games it matters in the proper games,” he said. “For me, personally, it’s nice to spend some decent time at the crease in these sort of conditions.”During this innings, the ones he flashed at did not take the edge and the ones he struck regularly came out of the middle but he was handed on life on 85 when Michael Carberry could not hold a swirling chance at deep midwicket off Simon Kerrigan, who then felt the brunt of Rutherford’s bat.His 110-ball hundred included 15 boundaries and three sixes, all straight off Kerrigan, the third of which took him to his century the ball after a similar blow had just failed to be gathered inside the boundary at long-on by Onions. After trying keep himself inside the playing area, Onions turned to the people sat behind him for confirmation of whether it was six or out: it was the New Zealand dugout who were able to confirm.”It was a gameplan,” Rutherford said, “you see the ball tossed up it’s a tough asking for any bowler into that breeze we had today although I did pitching-wedge a couple.”Rutherford continued to latch on to Kerrigan, the Lancashire left-arm spinner who was bowling into the stiff breeze, which enabled the batsmen to hit with it as Rutherford struck his fourth six moments after passing three figures. It was similar to the treatment he dished out to Monty Panesar at stages during the series in New Zealand. Also very familiar from the previous series was his strength through the off side from cover to backward point, an area fed by the Lions bowlers who gave him too many wide deliveries to pick off. Twice he took three boundaries in an over, once off Chris Woakes then again from Toby Roland-Jones who struggled bowling into the strong breeze.”We found him quite tricky to bowl at, he manufactures width pretty well which he showed throughout his innings and he’s pretty aggressive,” Roland-Jones said. “We tried to straighten up on him and restrict his boundaries and I felt as the day wore on we got better with that.”The first wicket came in the seventh over when Peter Fulton played round a full delivery from Onions which would have taken out middle as his tricky start to the tour continued. When England’s attack did not find much movement in New Zealand Fulton was able to play to his favoured leg side with less risk, but the extra nip with the Duke ball on greener pitches makes it a likely mode of dismissal for him.Onions was given an eight-over spell with the new ball and pushed his length fuller than the other frontline quicks. He could have claimed Kane Williamson for 2 but Woakes spilled a rapid chance at gully. Williamson, however, did not build on his reprieve and pulled a short ball from Roland-Jones low to midwicket.Ross Taylor’s first innings of the tour began in slightly uncertain style. Barring the hundred he made in the one-day series against England he has struggled since returning after the captaincy fall-out. He was beaten a couple of times outside off, drove close to point although after the lunch break started to look a little more at ease until, like Fulton, playing round a full delivery to be lbw. That was a second wicket for Roland-Jones, who had changed ends to have the wind behind him and struck in his first over of a spell for the second time in the day, as he clawed back his figures from the earlier punishment.”It was pretty difficult to be honest, combining into that wind with going uphill and it was about trying to do a job,” Roland-Jones said. “There’s always a job to do coming up the hill, but as a tall bloke it’s much nicer to come down the hill.”Dean Brownlie, who eased debate over his Test place with 71 against Derbyshire, survived a strong appeal for caught behind against Chris Wright before rain forced the players off for an early tea. They did not have the chance to resume.
