Spurs star Heung-min Son was surprisingly invisible against Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways on Sunday night as they defeated Brighton & Hove Albion at home but for the very first time this season, superstar Heung-min Son looked underwhelming and largely anonymous.

Perhaps Spurs’ congested fixture list has finally caught up with the South Korean favourite as he was invisible up against the impressive Tariq Lamptey.

Jose Mourinho’s side took the lead through a Harry Kane penalty early in the first half before they were pegged back by the aforementioned Seagulls defender.

Gareth Bale then saved their bacon within three minutes of coming on to seal all three points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Son, who had scored eight goals and provided two assists prior to this seventh league outing, wasn’t at the races at all – failing to contribute with a goal in any form.

He also managed to fire off just one shot, which was off target, as well as winning only 45% of his duels, being dribbled past twice and failing to provide a single cross from four attempts.

The €90m-rated (£82m) star managed to only make ten of 16 passing attempts too.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold graded him a lowly 5/10 and claimed that he “struggled to make an impact for much of the game.”

Whether it was an off-night due to fatigue or just in general, it must come as a massive concern to Mourinho as one of his most influential players failed to make much of an impact.

In recent weeks, the Telegraph reported that the club were going to prioritise tying him down to a new contract, which would see a significant raise to his current £110k-per-week deal.

With performances like that, it certainly wouldn’t be justified, though it was so out of character for Son.

Lamptey, on the other hand, won six of seven duels and recorded two dribbles up against the Spurs fan-favourite, per SofaScore.

The 28-year-old was withdrawn five minutes early, which was hardly a surprise given how poorly he let his manager down – and that only goes to suggest that maybe it was him running out of steam having come on earlier than expected in midweek.

Spurs could’ve saved millions with steady operator Ryan Fredericks

Tottenham Hotspur have splashed the cash in the hunt to find viable replacements for Kyle Walker and then Kieran Trippier, but perhaps the answer was right under their nose all along.

He just needed a little nurturing.

Since 2017, the north London outfit have spent £23m on Serge Aurier and now £15m on Matt Doherty – a total nearing £40m is a pretty hefty investment and only goes to show how desperately they have missed the aforementioned England duo.

Two years prior to Walker’s mega-money move to Manchester City, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino sold Ryan Fredericks, then aged 22, to Bristol City for around £175,000, the same fee Fulham paid for him less than a month later.

He made just four senior appearances for the club and enjoyed loan spells in the Championship with Millwall and Middlesbrough between 2010 and 2015.

Where is Fredericks now?

Fredericks has since gone onto become a mainstay for local rivals West Ham United in the Premier League, where he has racked up a total of 45 appearances, per Transfermarkt.

His value now stands at £3.6m having hit a career-high £6.3m just a year ago, so it certainly seems like his exit from N17 was a little premature.

The 28-year-old isn’t as classy as a Sergio Reguilon or a Doherty, but he has proven to be a steady operator in the top-flight and prior to injury, looked to have been one of David Moyes’ best defenders.

Per WhoScored, Fredericks has averaged three key passes, 2.7 clearances, 1.7 interceptions and one tackle per game this season.

This puts him above Doherty, who has only managed 0.7 key passes and 2.3 clearances each appearance. They are both the same age, yet one was sold for £175k and the other cost £15m.

Fredericks’ recent form has led to temporary Hammers boss Alan Irvine praising him as “outstanding” and “fantastic”.

You can’t help but feel that if Pochettino brought him through gradually, then Spurs could have saved themselves millions, not just during the summer transfer window but many more, as he could have stepped up to fill the boots of Walker or Trippier – eventually.

Spurs £25m target Josh King could be the perfect foil for Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur are still yet to resolve one of their lingering problems and fresh reports hint that could yet rumble on…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Spurs have been joined in the race to sign relegated AFC Bournemouth striker Josh King by Serie A giants AC Milan.

It’s claimed that the 28-year-old looks set to leave the Cherries this summer with just a year left remaining on his current contract, so the Championship newcomers would be open to listening to offers.

Sky Sports reported in June that four of the Premier League’s top six were also keen on the Norweigen forward whilst The Sun have mooted a £25m fee to secure his signature.

Perfect foil

It is no secret that Spurs need another striker as they failed to replace veteran Fernando Llorente last summer – and it would come back to haunt them at the start of 2020.

Harry Kane’s injury on New Year’s Day led to Spurs being knocked out of the FA Cup and the Champions League with players playing out of position in his absence. His return post-lockdown saw them claw back a top-six place thanks to the Englishman’s seven goals.

The north London faithful should be no strangers to King as Mauricio Pochettino wanted him back in 2017 after a goal-laden campaign.

King’s eight goals and four assists weren’t enough to prevent the Cherries’ relegation, but it could hint towards him being the perfect foil for Spurs’ frontline, especially given his versatility to play anywhere in attack.

The 46-cap international averaged 2 dribbles and 1.2 key passes per game this season, via WhoScored, which suggests he could be in a similar mould to Kane despite being 5 foot 11.

Ex-Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe’s praise for King should be enough to convince anyone of parting with eight figures, too, he once told Match of the Day: “Josh is outstanding physically, technically and mentally – he has the complete package, a little bit of everything.”

This one seems like a no-brainer for those at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur: Juan Foyth reveals big change on Instagram which Davinson Sanchez loves

Tottenham defender Juan Foyth has shared a surprising image of his return to Enfield after the Premier League’s plans to restart the season stepped up a notch.

Foyth uploaded a photo of himself on Instagram (via

/CAu3yjaAjSR/?utm_source=ig_embed”>@juanfoyth) in Spurs’ iconic training kit, but with a shock twist. The youngster can be seen sporting a brand new trim, which is cut in a similar style to Arthur Shelby’s haircut in Peaky Blinders.

His teammate Davinson Sanchez certainly seemed to think so, as he congratulated the Argentine on his new style in the comments, and there is no doubt this change may have caught plenty of fans by surprise.

Once considered a prodigy of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, it is fair to say that Foyth has struggled to make much of an impact in north London this season. Indeed, he has only madeTransfermarkt).

Furthermore, the Argentina international has fallen out of favour with Mourinho and he has been offered to a number of clubs, including La Liga giants Barcelona. Nevertheless, it seems the 22-year-old will stay at Spurs for the time being, and fans will be hoping he can quickly find his feet if he is called into action next month.

Aston Villa must let Keinan Davis go this summer

Aston Villa need to let Keinan Davis go this summer.

The 22-year-old striker is clearly a talent, and there is surely a reason that Villa decided to snap him up from non-league Biggleswade Town in 2015.

But he hasn’t shown it at all.

The Athletic reported earlier this season that Davis’ strength is such that even John Terry, Villa’s assistant manager and the ex-Chelsea and England captain, hates defending against him in training.

That is all well and good, but his opportunity to grab the bull by the horns and become Villa’s first-choice striker has well and truly passed him by.

Indeed, Davis has made 33 appearances for the U23s in his career and, in that time, has scored a grand total of seven goals, while providing eight assists.

Those goals have come between the 2015-16 season and the 2018-19 season at a rate of 1.75 goals per season.

Davis has scored goals for the first-team, it must be said, netting four in 57 outings.

But, again, the hit rate there is abysmal – it equates to a goal every 0.07 games.

He last scored a senior goal in August 2019, in the 6-1 win over Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Cup. His other three goals for the first-team came in 17-18, two of which were in the Championship, while the other came in an FA Cup tie against Peterborough United, which Villa lost 3-1.

It must be said at this point that injuries have held Davis back; he was ruled out for three weeks in February of this year with a hamstring injury, and the aforementioned Athletic report makes mention of a niggling hip injury that has troubled him throughout his career.

Did he really play for us?! No Villa fan has managed to name all of these obscure Villans….

However, the stats paint a clear picture: This is a striker who doesn’t score enough goals.

Davis’ contract expires at the end of the season and Villa do have the option to extend it if they so wish.

So poor has he been, and given he has played just 129 minutes of Premier League football this season, they should merely let him go instead.

Meanwhile, Villa could land their Jack Grealish replacement this summer!

West Ham should work on 2 major issues during the international break

Many Premier League fans mourn the temporary loss of Premier League football during the international break, but for West Ham United, it can be seen as a great opportunity to iron out some issues.

The Hammers have gone seven games in all competitions without a win, so Manuel Pellegrini will have plenty of things to work on.

Here are some suggestions for what they can work on during the break:

Supporting Sebastien Haller

Haller has cut an isolated figure at the head of West Ham’s attack far too often since joining in the summer.

When speaking to FFC, Tony Cottee recognised that the Frenchman needs more from his teammates going forward: “I think at times he’s been a little bit isolated up front, so he could do with a little bit of help, but I’ve been impressed.”

Whether they improve this by changing the formation so he has a strike partner, or simply getting the likes of Felipe Anderson and Pablo Fornals to play higher, West Ham need to find a way to get more support to their record signing.

If Haller has scored four goals and got an assist in the current circumstances, it will be brilliant to see what he can do with adequate support.

A settled backline

The Hammers have been shipping goals in recent weeks, letting in six between the two games against Newcastle United and Burnley.

If Pellegrini is going to introduce David Martin as a way of improving this record – with Roberto having made big mistakes for two of those goals – now could be the perfect time due to the fact he will have a couple of weeks to prepare with the backline.

In addition, Pellegrini will need to decide who he is going to have in his back four, with Pablo Zabaleta having played twice before being swapped back out for Ryan Fredericks against Burnley.

There is also the question of who will partner Issa Diop, with Fabian Balbuena having started the last three games after being benched for the previous four.

Now is the time to get some continuity going, in the hope it will help provide an extra layer of solidity.

Aston Villa fans find a positive amid their latest defeat

Despite going ahead courtesy of a Trezeguet strike, Aston Villa let another lead slip against a top-six side with Liverpool scoring two late goals to maintain their unbeaten start to 2019/20.

That being said there was one positive to be found, and that was in the rapturous atmosphere inside Villa Park. The vibes in the stadium has got these fans praising the club as they strive to have a rosier outlook on their prospects for the remainder of the campaign.

Strikes from Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane gave Jurgen Klopp’s side an important victory to retain their six-point lead at the summit of the league table, but the German coach also praised the atmosphere inside the stadium in his post-match comments, much to the delight of many Villa fans.

Defeat for Dean Smith’s side will have been naturally frustrating – especially given their ongoing inability to see out leads against superior opposition – but the reaction to the defeat hasn’t seen many put too many dampeners on proceedings.

It should serve as a sign of encouragement going forward, especially as the Villans strive to make their home ground a fortress.

Here are some of the best reactions following an official club tweet.
