Rangers: Fans love Graeme Souness video

Graeme Souness is something of a Rangers legend.

The Scot joined in 1986, taking up a player-manager role, and would end up spending five years at the club. It is mainly in the dug-out where he is most remembered though – he won the league cup five times and the league four times overall (one of each as a player/manager), helping the Ibrox outfit to dominate football during that time north of the border.

Still, there remained some fantastic moments on the pitch itself for the former Liverpool boss, one of which came against Aberdeen in 1986. He scored his first goal for the club with a fantastic effort from outside the box that gave the opposition goalkeeper no chance – Sir Alex Ferguson was still manager of the Dons at the time.

The clip of his strike has been shared by Rangers’ official Twitter account as it happened 34 years ago on Tuesday. The fans of the Glasgow club have clearly enjoyed the video – one fan even called him a “hero” – as you can see by some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Sheffield United should look at Neil Warnock’s comments as a good thing

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

There’s damning with faint praise, but is there such a thing as praise with faint damning?

Because that’s the situation that the staff and players at Sheffield United might just find himself in after some rather weird remarks from former Blades boss Neil Warnock.

What’s he said?

Speaking to talkSPORT, Warnock praised Wilder for the work that he is doing at Bramall Lane right now even though the players he’s working work aren’t exactly of the highest quality:

“It’s an amazing system. I’m not being disrespectful, but he’s got bang average players playing top of the Premier League standards. That’s what you talk about man-management, these lads believe in what Chris is doing and good luck, the fans are loving it and I’m sure they’ll do well.”

Unleashing the beasts

Warnock has always been one that isn’t afraid to voice his opinion on all things football, but this might come back to bite him in the backside at the end of the season.

The praise for Wilder just seems to be never-ending, with ex-pros like Tony Cascarino saying that he should be considered for ‘bigger’ Premier League jobs further down the road, but a comment like this, is exactly what players like those in the Bramall Lane dressing room should be looking for, extra motivation.

Whilst Warnock might not exactly hold the highest esteem when it comes to the world of football, much in the same way John Terry made disparaging remarks about Robbie Savage a number of years ago, the chance to go and prove someone wrong should be a big motivator for the players as they go on this season.

Whilst some might write the Blades off, including to a certain extent us at FFC as well, they should take all these comments and use it as a way to prove everyone wrong.

They’ve already exceeded expectations by even getting into this division, and a quote like this might just be that little bit extra that they need to really kick on and make this season a memorable one.

Man Utd fans stunned as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plays down January signings

When you see your side languishing in tenth place in the Premier League, and with just 13 goals scored in 11 top-flight games, the last thing you probably want is for your manager to play down talk of possible new arrivals in the January transfer window.

Speaking ahead of the Europa League clash against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that there may not be reinforcements in the winter, and that the “priority” is for them to get players returning from injuries.

He said (as quoted by The Evening Standard): “The priority now is to get players fit and get through to the next round. Transfers – we always look at the league table, look at players. There might be none, there might be one, might be two in January, but the summer window is the big one and you can’t do many good deals in January.”

After hearing Solskjaer appearing to downplay any potential excitement of some transfer market action in the January window, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

Many supporters of the Manchester side felt the Norwegian is simply getting his excuses in early, and that they aren’t surprised by his mentality.

Check out some of the reaction of United fans below:

Spurs received no bids for Christian Eriksen in the summer

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur did not receive a single bid for Christian Eriksen in the summer, per The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

What’s the word?

The Denmark international was heavily linked with an exit from Spurs throughout the most recent transfer window.

Ornstein, writing in his Athletic column that is published every Monday, reports that the playmaker had set his heart on a move to either Real Madrid or Barcelona, though neither club were keen on bringing him to Spain.

Manchester United are said to have registered an interest, only for Eriksen to rebuff those advances before a formal bid could be tabled.

Eriksen’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has yet to sit down for talks over an extension, per Ornstein.

Stuck with him

This feels like a problem for Spurs.

Eriksen has struggled thus far this season, scoring just one goal and assisting one more, and one feels that the club could struggle to find a buyer in January, which will be their last opportunity to do so.

Indeed, Ornstein suggests that the club would rather keep him than not but, still, it is merely good business sense for Spurs to look to receive a fee in the next window.

At this point, though, they could be losing out on a major chunk of change.

Chairman Daniel Levy reportedly told Real that he would want over £100m if he were to sell in the summer but, now, there’s very little chance of a club bidding anywhere near that when they could sign him for free a few months later.

In January, the price will surely have halved but if Ornstein is right – he usually is – Levy may be stuck with an albatross around his neck, merely watching the clock as his contract ticks down.

That may not exactly be Eriksen’s fault – although recent form doesn’t help his cause – but nonetheless, Levy is now faced with drumming up interest in a player who received no bids during the summer or losing him for nothing.

Liverpool fans keen to see Naby Keita & Oxlade-Chamberlain pair up in CL match

Liverpool host their first Champions League fixture of the season tonight with Red Bull Salzburg the visitors, and fans are keen to see a midfield duo take to the field.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have not got as much game time as they would have hoped for so far this campaign due to various injury and fitness issues.

The latter has been match fit since making a return from an ACL injury at the end of last season, but so far Jurgen Klopp has taken care in his recovery and he has been limited to just four starts and 323 minutes as a result, excluding a small cameo in the Community Shield.

Keita also featured in that season opener, but other than that has played only 63 minutes – all of which came in the Carabao Cup clash against MK Dons last week.

Due to their absences, fans are eager to see them in action at Anfield once more, with many believing they would work well in a trio alongside Fabinho. Since both Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain have enjoyed a better pass accuracy than Jordan Henderson so far, they could be correct.

The following reactions show how excited fans are by the prospect of them both starting, and with Keita coming up against a former club it could be an enjoyable evening for the Guinea international.

Nottingham Forest fans laud Matty Cash after latest victory

Nottingham Forest put the rest of the league on notice by defeating what were the league’s frontrunners, Swansea City.

A late tap-in from substitute Alfa Semedo’s meant that the home side’s unbeaten run in the league came to an end, earning a valuable three points for Forest in south Wales.

Reds manager Sabri Lamouchi made five changes from the side that rescued a point against Preston North End before the international break with the most surprising move being in defence.

Both full-backs were changed as Yuri Ribeiro made his first league start in place of Jack Robinson while Matty Cash returned to the right side of defence in the place of the injured Carl Jenkinson.

The 22-year-old’s performance caught the eye of many supporters at the City Ground.

One fan claimed he deserves his place and he didn’t care if he wasn’t a right-back with another believing he could make the position his own.

Cash has played in the role before, starting the first three Championship matches there before the club made a move for the former Arsenal defender last month.

A further member of the Reds fanbase said he preferred him to Jenkinson while one stated that Cash had made a step up this season.

Leeds winger Jack Harrison has left Marcelo Bielsa with a dilemma

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds’ first defeat of the season against Swansea on Saturday brought about as many positives as it did negatives.

The fact Leeds managed to retain possession for such large spells of the game should come as a form of encouragement, as should the performance of Stuart Dallas.

Creating 21 opportunities was also a plus point but one of the negatives has given Marcelo Bielsa plenty to think about over the international break.

In fact, it’s provided the Argentine with one of the biggest dilemmas he’s faced in 2019/20 so far.

On the chalkboard

Try as they might, Leeds struggled to find a goal against the Swans last weekend, something that considering Bielsa plays with four behind his main striker was rather bizarre.

Jack Harrison was isolated out on the left-hand side, an aspect of the game that was down to Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich occupying the same space over on the right.

The 22-year-old struggled for any rhythm and consistency but his overall performances this term, despite showing flashes, must have his manager pondering his role.

His outing at Elland Road against Steve Cooper’s men had fans slating him and after achieving a match rating of 5.97 on WhoScored it’s easy to see why.

He completed just 76% of his passes as he was dispossessed four times. Harrison also had five unsuccessful touches in a torrid afternoon for the loanee.

Against Stoke he mustered six dribbles but this time he only managed one. Consequently, it could be the moment to finally call on Helder Costa.

It’s surely only a matter of time before the Portuguese gets his first league start and it may well come after the international break if Bielsa wants to find an answer to one of the problems last Saturday.

The fact is that despite proving a threat with his dribbling, Harrison isn’t being successful with his end product.

So far this term he’s only managed one goal whilst after six matches he’s failed to register an assist.

The 5 foot 9 wide man is a canny operator but unless his numbers improve, he could be ousted for Costa.

Bielsa hasn’t favoured much change in the Championship but he must have a long think over the next two weeks.

Given Costa’s 15 goals and 14 assists at this level, he could prove inspiring.
