Things are heating up in Division One of the Norwich Union League after Yorkshire Phoenix beat Durham Dynamos by 28 runs in the day/night clash at Headingley.

Farid Bakri05-Aug-2002Things are heating up in Division One of the Norwich Union League after Yorkshire Phoenix beat Durham Dynamos by 28 runs in the day/night clash at Headingley.Having won the toss the home side elected to bat, but lost Matthew Wood (5) and Chris Silverwood (1) with only 30 on the board. Vic Craven (59) and Gary Fellows (50) overcame this setback to play masterfully and solidly, giving Phoenix the platform they needed to secure their third victory in as many days. The former produced a fireworks display with five well-timed fours and two beautifully struck sixes, whilst Fellows’ running between the wickets was energetic as their side reached 222. Neil Killeen took three for 42 and Paul Collingwood three for 29 in an untidy bowling display which conceded 19 wides. The visitors got off to a shambolic start in reply. Silverwood (three for 15) made amends for his early dismissal with three crisp wickets to help reduce the visitors to 19 for four. He trapped Michael Gough lbw for four, and had Danny Law caught by Wood for a duck before bowling England man Paul Collingwood for three. Tim Bresnan bagged the other wicket when he sent Nicky Peng back to the pavilion before he could make a start.Gary Pratt (84) and Andrew Pratt (59) then put on 88 for the sixth wicket as they tried to restore order. The older Pratt continued to work hard for his runs, finding the boundary only five times, but in the end his efforts were in vain as Fellows’ precision bowling undid the Durham tail-end. Yorkshire climb into third place after their latest win, and go level with Warwickshire with a game in hand. The Division Two encounter between Sussex Sharks and Gloucestershire Gladiators survived ten balls before persistent rain forced the match to be abandoned. Both sides get two points each and Sussex remain at the bottom of the table.

Newcastle linked with Mario Lemina

Newcastle United are in discussions with Southampton over a potential swap deal involving midfielders Isaac Hayden and Mario Lemina.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are set to demand around £12 million for Hayden while the Saints value Lemina at £4m, due to the Gabon international only having one year remaining on his contract.

The report also claims that French outfit Nice are interested in acquiring Lemina’s signature, meaning Bruce may have to move quickly in order to secure his man.

Fans will be gutted

News of Hayden’s potential departure from St. James’ Park may come as a shock to the club’s supporters, given he signed a new six-year contract just 12 months ago.

Despite initially struggling to settle in the North East of England, the 26-year-old has endeared himself to the Newcastle faithful over the last couple of campaigns, and the fans will surely be gutted to hear this latest revelation.

His importance to Steve Bruce’s side was clear for all to see throughout 2020/21 as the Arsenal academy graduate provided a solid base in midfield from which to build on.

As per WhoScored, Hayden recorded 2.2 tackles per league game last term and made 1.8 interceptions, outperforming his teammates on both metrics, highlighting his importance to this Newcastle side.

While Lemina is undoubtedly a talented player, swapping him for Hayden appears to be a significant mistake by Bruce.

The dynamic midfielder matched the Newcastle man’s 2.2 tackles last season, but managed just 1.1 interceptions and was ultimately unable to prevent Fulham from returning to the Championship.

Therefore, it’s a transfer that makes little sense for the St. James’ Park outfit.

On Sunday, Hayden posted on Instagram: “5 Years today defending the @nufc badge. What a journey it’s been, wouldn’t have changed it for the world. Looking forward to the season ahead. #NUFC” indicating he’s happy on Tyneside, and not the driving force behind this potential deal.

After a strong end to 2020/21, Newcastle fans would have been hoping to see their side strengthened over the summer, building on the momentum Bruce’s charges created. However, selling Hayden would risk losing that feeling, and Bruce needs to think carefully before proceeding with this deal.

Border 'B' beat Western Province 'B' by 9 runs

Border B put their disappointing performance in the the Bowl match behind them to squeeze out the hosts in a thrilling finale in the one day match

Peter le Grange28-Oct-2002Border B put their disappointing performance in the the Bowl match behind them to squeeze out the hosts in a thrilling finale in the one day match. Tight bowling at the death saw the visitors to a narrow 9 run victory. After winning the toss, the Border batsmen all chipped in towards a useful but not necessarily intimidating total. Several batsmen got going, but were thwarted by some good catching in the outfield, particularly by Andrew Puttick, normally at home in the slips, and Ryan Bailey.Needing to bat at 4.5 to the over, the WP openers Derrin Bassage and Rashaad Magiet got off to a slow start only to be undone by some well directed bowling from Andrew Pringle. Puttick was then happy to play second fiddle to the aggressive Jonno McLean in a partnership of 100 for the third wicket. But disaster waited with the score on the dreaded Nelson, as both were dismissed on that total. The run out of Puttick was comical, with both batsmen running towards the same end after a major misunderstanding. The middle order faltered thereafter, with 4 wickets falling for 17 runs. Wesley Euley then combined with William Hantam to add 55 for the 8th wicket in double quick time. Hantam was particularly enterprising, his clean hitting being rewarded with four sparkling boundaries. This partnership swung the balance in the home team’s favour, bringing back the asking rate to a run a ball. Border’s cause was not helped when Pringle returned for his closing spell and promptly conceded 10 runs in his first over.Pringle had the last laugh when he bowled Hantam, trying to play a straight delivery to the leg side. At the other end, Euley went through a dry patch as he failed to score off nine successive deliveries. This swung the pendulum back in Border’s favour. Although Euley then started to find the gaps again, he was undone by a fine catch on the boundary by Michael Matika. The final over began with WP needing 10 for victory. Rory Kleinveldt played and missed at the first delivery, but connected with a powerful cross batted hit straight down the pitch off the second. He was left open-mouthed as Pringle dropped to the ground to take a stunning return catch. Lelethu Ntontela, who had earlier bowled impressively with the new ball, gallantly went for the big hit but was caught in the deep to give Border their triumph.

Edouard considering Celtic stay

Heading into the ongoing transfer window, it looked a rather bleak situation for Celtic.

The Hoops didn’t have a permanent first-team manager until last week while Parkhead was faced with a number of senior departures.

What’s the word?

After appointing Ange Postecoglou as their new boss, the future of Celtic football club looks a little more vibrant.

The Australian has already welcomed two new players to the club in Liaw Shaw and Joey Dawson but he now needs to crack on with first-team recruitment.

A move for Sunderland forward Charlie Wyke appears to be in the pipeline but he might not need to replace Odsonne Edouard.

That’s because Leicester’s apparent £15m deal to sign the Frenchman is falling through after a disagreement in fee led to the Foxes turning their attention to RB Salzburg attacker Patson Daka.

As a result, Edouard is weighing up his options and according to The Daily Mail, is considering staying at Celtic this season and seeing out the rest of his contract.

Huge boost

This might not be a welcome sight for Celtic’s finances but in terms of their chances next term, it represents a colossal boost for Postecoglou’s chances.

The 55-year-old has walked into a mess at Paradise but if Edouard remains in Glasgow, it will give the new manager a huge helping hand in their bid to overthrow Rangers.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-transfer-news-posetcoglou-ryan-delap-wyke” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Towards the end of last season, it looked as though the Frenchman had downed tools. He was a shadow of his former self and ended 2020/21 with just three goals in his last ten matches.

Those initially looked to be his final outings in the famous green and white hoops but a stay would do Celtic the world of good.

After all, the 23-year-old has been the club’s top scorer for a number of years now.

His form in front of goal led the club to consecutive title wins in 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20 while despite Celtic’s shoddy form of late, he still racked up 22 strikes last term.

Edouard is one of the greatest strikers Celtic have had in the modern era, something a tally of 83 goals in 168 matches testifies.

A bustling ball of energy, there are very few defences in Scotland capable of stopping him.

If Celtic did receive a fee for him this summer then it’s likely they will have spent that on funding a replacement. As such, they aren’t particularly losing out on much.

This feels like a win-win situation for the Bhoys. Postecoglou will be over the moon if he gets a chance to utilise his talents.

AND in other news, Celtic can rectify Toney howler by signing 41-goal gem who’s like “ice in the box”…

Das hopes to make a big impression

The batsman he idolises got 774 runs at a mind-boggling average of 154.80 in his debut series here in the Caribbean almost 31 years ago. But the 25-year-old Shiv Sunder Das, with 1202 Test runs at an average of 40.06 (two centuries against Zimbabwe), knows well that emulating Sunil Gavaskar is probably impossible.India’s most dependable opener after Navjot Singh Sidhu, however, is a born optimist; he wants to score big hundreds in this series. “In fact, that’s the only area where I have failed in my previous tours. I played reasonably well in South Africa and Zimbabwe, but failed to convert those fifties into three-figure marks. My second hundred in Nagpur boosted my confidence. I am now eager to make the most of it and concentrate more,” said Das.Already, he has had seven opening partners in the 18 Tests in which he has appeared for the country. He is not complaining though. “It is an area where I can do nothing. If you are playing with a particular partner for some days, it improves on-the-wicket understanding. But basically, our (the openers’) job remains the same – to allow the batsmen scheduled to come later more freedom by seeing the polish off the new ball and putting some runs on the board,” he said. For the last six Tests, however, he has been opening with Deep Dasgupta and it is more than likely that the duo will open in the Guyana Test too. Dasgupta might have struggled behind the stumps, but with the batting gloves on, he averages almost 40 at the top of the order. So the team management is in favour of giving him a couple more opportunities.”Since we both come from the same zone, we have had earlier experience of batting together. He did play well and we have a good understanding. The way he played in South Africa was simply superb,” Das said about Dasgupta. The Orissa opener, meanwhile, had his preparatory sessions on the matting wickets of Bhubaneshwar, where the pacers were asked to bowl to him from 18-yards with wet tennis balls. “I did so to master the lifting deliveries and the pace. I know the West Indian bowling attack, sans Walsh and Ambrose, seems vulnerable, but on their own grounds, they can be formidable.”And although, they are losing outside their country consistently, they are still the team to beat in their own backyard. So, I’d tried to be as prepared as I could. I even watched the West Indies, Pakistan series in Sharjah to have a feel of how their faster bowlers bowl. I now know how Dillon and Cuffy bowl. That will be an advantage for me since I’ll be playing them for the first time in a Test match,” Das said. The West Indian wickets have become increasingly lifeless over the last few years. But Indian batsmen, as we all know, have always discovered new ways and new bowlers to get out whenever they have been abroad. And the capitulation had always begun at the top of the order. Das is determined to do his bit to put an end to that. If he succeeds, Sourav Ganguly’s India would surely be grateful.

James Milner and Oxlade-Chamberlain return

Liverpool have been handed a huge boost for tonight’s clash against Burnley after Jurgen Klopp confirmed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back in contention and that James Milner may also be fit enough to make a return.

The Reds travel to Turf Moor this evening to take on Sean Dyche’s men in what could prove to be a pivotal encounter for their Champions League qualification hopes.

Klopp’s charges are currently sitting in the fifth position in the Premier League standings, just three points behind fourth-placed Leicester City. However, the six-time European champions have a game in hand over the Foxes, and their superior goal difference means Liverpool are in control of their own destiny.

A dramatic win last time out against West Bromwich Albion, courtesy of goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s injury-time effort, has kept the Anfield outfit’s top-four dreams alive, and now they’ve been handed another significant lift.

In a press conference on Tuesday (as reported by the Liverpool Echo), Klopp revealed experienced midfielder Milner was set to take part in training, while Oxlade-Chamberlain had recovered from illness.

“Milly will train today but is that enough to be involved tomorrow? I will see,” he said. “Ox was ill. Ox is back.”

The potential return of the duo is bound to have Klopp buzzing after having to cope without several key players throughout the current campaign due to injury.

It would allow the enigmatic German manager to field Fabinho in the centre of defence if he so wishes knowing he has experienced heads to call upon to fill the gap left in the engine room, or simply offers him more experienced options from the bench should he require them.

Liverpool’s season hinges on tonight’s result against Burnley, but the return of Milner and Oxlade-Chamberlain is certainly a big boost to their chances, whether either of the duo start or are able to come on from the bench, as tonight has the feel of a game where experienced stars will be more beneficial than raw youngsters.

And, in other news… Asking price set: Edwards must act to sign Reds target with a pass accuracy of 87.1%
