Exclusive: Hartson likens Spurs’ position to that of Arsenal of the last ten years

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, John Hartson made comparisons between the recent success of Tottenham and the Arsenal side of the previous ten years, suggesting that both clubs deserve credit for what they have been able to achieve under immense financial strain.

The two teams have each moved into new, state of the art stadiums whilst continuing to build success on the pitch, and although Spurs remain without a trophy since 2008, they were able to record a world record profit of £113m despite the stadium build.

Despite that, some Spurs fans remain frustrated at Daniel Levy for what they consider a lack of spending, perhaps feeling that wage budget constraints limit the type of players they are able to sign, or hold onto.

However, others have praised some of the work done by the Tottenham chairman, and Hartson believes that acknowledgement should also be given to their fierce rivals.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “If you praise Levy, you’ve got to praise one or two others for doing similar jobs as well.

“They’ve been able to manage the club and remain successful while they’ve built the new stadium. Like Arsenal did 10 years ago. It’s a carbon copy of Arsenal.”

A new stadium isn’t the only similarity they share with their neighbours. For all the improvements of recent years and the four consecutive years of Champions League qualification, they have no silverware to show for it.

The Gunners similarly went on a barren run between 2005 and 2014 yet qualified for Europe’s elite competition in each of those years.

“They won FA Cups but Pochettino hasn’t won anything. He [Arsene Wenger] continued to win FA Cups, he got the club in the Champions League for 22 seasons on the spin, which was remarkable. Arsenal were questioning Wenger about not buying anybody or spending any money, but they continued to be successful,” added the former striker.

“I think Spurs have been very unlucky not to win a trophy under Pochettino, who I think is a fantastic manager. But when you talk about Daniel Levy and what he tried to do, it’s exactly what the Arsenal board did with Arsene Wenger.”

There is still work to do for Spurs and Pochettino if they are to better the recent history of their north London rival, and until they win something the same questions and doubts will linger over the club.

Manchester United only have one option when it comes to Allegri, pundits suggest

Former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri is still a long way off becoming the next manager of Manchester United, but the move would “make sense,†according to ESPN pundit Julien Laurens. It’s got to that stage in the season again when the papers and pundits are talking about the future of United.Indeed, it doesn’t feel all that long ago that the likes of Gary Neville and friends were debating whether former coach Jose Mourinho should be sacked so early in the season. The 56-year-old was ousted from his post by the ever deluded Ed Woodward on December 18, 2018, and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who appeared at first to be the answer to the club’s problems.ÂHow could anyone forget about the clip of Rio Ferdinand getting a little too excited about Ole being ‘at the wheel’?

Fast forward 40 games, 20 wins, 8 draws, 12 losses and United’s worst start to a season in 30 years and we’re back to square one again.

Is United a “damaged brand”, as pundits from ESPN sports have suggested?

Tuttosport recently revealed that Ed Woodward is very close to bringing six-time Serie A winner Allegri to Old Trafford.

However, with a number of other top jobs potentially opening up around Europe, most of which are more appealing than the current wayward Old Trafford rebuild, Alejandro Moreno is probably justified in asking: “what manager in their right mind would go ‘yeah, I’m going to go in that direction even though there is no direction’?”

Shaka Hislop, too, echoed Moreno’s sentiment and said: “If somebody else, for argument’s sake, let’s say PSG decide we’ve had enough of Tuchel…and they join the race, PSG is the more likely destination.

“So you act now whilst he’s still available.”

Speaking to Polish outlet Prezglad Sportowy (via the Metro) Allegri apparently refused to rule out taking the job and said: ‘I speak English too poorly for now, but I am learning.’

Man Utd vs Arsenal could rest on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Maguire

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Arsenal will travel to Old Trafford on Monday to face Manchester United in a match that could have huge implications for the race to finish in the top four.

Harry Maguire and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are two men who could have a decisive say.

On the chalkboard

The Gunners have had the better campaign to date as they sit in fourth place after six games. They have won three of their first six Premier League matches, with their latest coming against Aston Villa last weekend.

The Red Devils have not had it so good, meanwhile, having won just two of their first six. They were particularly disappointing last Sunday, with West Ham needing to do little to earn their 2-0 victory.

This is a game that both teams will be desperate to win, then, and it should prove to be a thrilling encounter.

One battle, in particular, could prove to be key in deciding the outcome.

Battle between two heavyweights

Aubameyang’s influence on the Arsenal attack cannot be understated.

He has already scored six goals in the Premier League this season, while he added another in the Europa League against Eintracht Frankfurt. In fact, he has scored in all but one match this campaign. The one fixture he didn’t bag in? The loss against Liverpool, the Gunners’ only defeat so far.

It is absolutely essential that Maguire is at the top of his game to keep the Gabon international under wraps, then.

So far this term, he has not faced any strikers of truly world-class quality. Jamie Vardy is the only one who is remotely comparable to that level, and the 26-year-old played with him for a number of years at Leicester City.

Against West Ham, the former Sheffield United man had arguably his worst game since moving to Manchester. In particular, he was found wanting as Andriy Yarmolenko opened the scoring. He left far too much space for the Ukraine international to take the ball and bury it into the bottom corner and he simply cannot afford Aubameyang the same sort of freedom.

The former Borussia Dortmund man, too, will need to keep an eye on Maguire in possession. He has averaged 63.8 passes per game so far this season, more than all but two of his teammates, while he has averaged 4.8 accurate long balls per game.

With United aiming to build from the back, Aubameyang cannot afford to allow the England international to feel comfortable on the ball. Pressure, whenever he has it at his feet, will be vital.

The two are huge players for their respective sides, and they are among the best players in the division.

Keep an eye on their duel during this match; it promises to be an important one.

Liverpool fans will love Gary Neville’s Roberto Firmino admission

[ad_pod ]It must hurt Gary Neville to have to lavish praise on Liverpool and their players every week, but sometimes you just can’t deny the truth.Indeed, Liverpool currently have some of the best players in the world at their disposal, and the Manchester United legend has had to admit that one of the Reds’ star players is world-class.

Indeed, although Neville has a deeply-ingrained hatred for Liverpool through his years of service for Manchester United, he couldn’t help but admit that Roberto Firmino is a world-class player.

This weekend’s performance against Newcastle had a number of players and pundits drooling over the Brazillian.

He provided a sublime assist for Mohamed Salah, and despite only coming on as a substitute he was voted Man of the Match.

Liverpool fans may not like the former England international, but they’ll certainly love this admission from a man who spent so long on the other side of such an intense rivalry.

It’s hard to disagree with Neville too, as Firmino has been a vital player for one of the best teams in Europe for multiple seasons now.

Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele anything but a £63m player vs Leicester

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Tottenham Hotspur fans were beyond ecstatic when the club completed the club-record signing of Tanguy Ndombele during the summer transfer window, for a fee Sky Sports reported to be £63m.

The Frenchman made an instant impression on the opening day of the Premier League season with a fine goal against Aston Villa, before the 22-year-old followed it up with an assist against Manchester City in their following top flight clash.

However, he then suffered a hamstring issue that kept him out against Newcastle United and Arsenal, and he hasn’t really looked great since he made his return to action as a substitute against Crystal Palace.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Whether he simply isn’t back to full fitness or not, the former Lyon man was particularly disappointing in the 2-1 defeat against Leicester City on Saturday.

He wasn’t at the races, and as well as encountering bad control on six separate occasions according to WhoScored, he was also dispossessed three times as well.

Having committed three fouls and having not been particularly great on the ball with a passing accuracy of less than 77%, it was hard to see what he was really bringing to the table at the King Power Stadium – whatever it was it certainly wasn’t worth £63m.

Off days can happen, but perhaps most worrying of all though was how lethargic he looked.

While the midweek Champions League trip could have played a part, you would expect an athletic 22-year-old to have a fair bit of energy but as Football London picked up on, he appeared tired throughout.

The fact that he was dribbled past on three occasions, as per SofaScore, and won just eight of the 20 duels he faced only goes to back that up even more, and it was a concerning performance in that respect.

Ndombele is a young player who clearly has a lot of quality in his locker, but he needs to show a lot more than he did against Brendan Rodgers’ men if he wants to ensure that Tottenham don’t end up regretting shelling out a huge transfer fee for him.

Rangers fans react as Josh McPake heads for Dundee on loan

Rangers youngster Josh McPake has joined Championship side Dundee on loan until January, and his parent club’s fans are excited about their wonderkid heading to Dens Park.

Steven Gerrard had left McPake’s future up to the 17 year-old to decide himself, with many clubs interested in the youngster, per Football Insider.

And after choosing the Championship side, the Gers Academy Player of the Year can get game time at a decent level in a side that should be chasing promotion back to the top flight this campaign.

It’s safe to say a lot is expected of McPake at Ibrox, particularly after he impressed on his debut in the Europa League. The winger came off the bench in the 6-0 demolition of St. Joseph’s in the first round of qualification, and looked bright in his 24-minute cameo.

The supporters are buzzing to see the youngster head out on loan to a club like Dundee, who have given youth a chance this season. Many expect he will make further progress in the second tier and come back to Gerrard’s side ready to break into the first-team.

Here’s how they reacted on Twitter as McPake joined Dundee:

Manchester United: Red Devils looking to replace Romelu Lukaku with Moussa Dembele

Olympique Lyonnais star Moussa Dembele will be on Manchester United’s shortlist of centre-forwards should Romelu Lukaku leave for Internazionale, according to Sky Sports News.

[ad_pod ]

United are willing to sell Lukaku, however, after rejecting a £54m bid from Inter, are waiting for the right price.

Talks between Inter and the Old Trafford giants have reached a stalemate, with the Italian club wary they must meet financial fair play rules to move for the Belgian forward.

Dembele is seen as a centre-forward as opposed to Nicolas Pepe, who the club have also been linked with, who is seen as a winger.

Links with Dembele would make sense, given the realism over signing the forward as opposed to other targets. Earlier in the summer’s transfer window, Manchester United were linked with a move for Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The links were shot down immediately with Unai Emery saying he won’t be willing to sell the striker.

You can see why Manchester United would put Dembele on their shortlist for strikers to sign after the last few seasons the France youth international has had. In the past three seasons, Dembele has scored a massive 71 goals in all competitions for both Celtic and Lyon.

Looking at the current lack of forwards in the transfer market, you could argue that Dembele represents both the most realistic and best option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

As mentioned above, any deal for Aubameyang has already been shot down.

So we come back full circle to Dembele, and after looking at his goalscoring record in two different leagues in Europe, he looks to be the natural goalscorer who can fill the potential void left by Lukaku.

Manchester United fans, would Dembele be a good replacement for Lukaku? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Kenny Miller believes Rangers could end up receiving £10m for James Tavernier

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Rangers striker Kenny Miller believes the club could end up getting as much as £10m if James Tavernier left the club, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s he said?

Miller played alongside the Rangers captain during his most recent spell at Ibrox so is well placed to offer a bit of insight on the full-back’s ability.

Manager Steven Gerrard admitted back in May he was expecting bids for Tavernier this summer, but to date there has been no serious move from any interested parties.

Miller thinks that when the time comes, the Ibrox outfit can expect to receive a healthy fee.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michel Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the new Partick Thistle signing said:

“One of my best mates, Gary Caldwell, sold him from Wigan. I was asking why would he let him go from League One in England to play for Rangers.

“But Tav has got better and better. He’s now huge for Rangers and they won’t want to lose him. I don’t think they’ll let him go on the cheap.

“They could end up getting £10m for him, so he’s been a really good investment. I don’t think you’ll get another Tav for £200,000 in this day and age. He’s grown into the club and he really cherishes it now. It would take something special for him to leave.”

Can Rangers afford to lose him?

Tavernier is not just a key member of the Rangers defensive line and a dressing room leader as captain, but also a massive contributor when it comes to their attacking output.

Last season he scored an incredible 17 goals, also assisting on 20 occasions, linking up with attackers such as Alfredo Morelos and Daniel Candeias from the right flank.

Replacing that kind of contribution would be hugely difficult for Rangers, especially from a right-back.

If any bids do come in for the 27-year-old this summer, as Gerrard expects, then the club will have to think seriously about whether to cash in on him or not.

Losing such an important player could be a critical blow when it comes to their attempt at winning the league next term.
