Glasgow Rangers: Fans rage at Tom English tweet

Glasgow Rangers and the other 41 clubs in Scotland’s top four tiers now have the opportunity to vote on whether they want to see the footballing pyramid north of the border reconstructed.

Ann Budge, the Hearts owner, has come to the table with a plan to switch up the system in Scotland, and it now looks that, after talks with the SPFL, a 14-10-10-10 structure is on the table. The governing body has now given the clubs the chance to say whether they back this potential new set-up or not.

SPFL chief Neil Doncaster appears to believe that is could well go through, but according to journalist Tom English, that is not the case. On Friday, he took to Twitter to say that there is genuine incredulity amongst several chairmen and chief executives that Doncaster actually believes this proposal could get voted through.

This has led to plenty of Gers fans reacting – Doncaster, after all, is not a popular figure amongst that particular fanbase. They have taken to the social media platform to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments below.

Newcastle fans loving what Steve Bruce has said about takeover

Whilst Newcastle’s proposed takeover has of course surrounded those higher up in the food chain at St James’ Park, that doesn’t mean to say the likes of the manager and players haven’t been affected by it.

And as per his comments ahead of the FA Cup clash against Manchester City, Magpies boss Steve Bruce has seemingly had enough of all the waiting around to see whether the Saudi consortium’s bid will finally be approved by the Premier League.

Think you’re a big Magpies fan? Can you name these former players by looking at their careers? Go on, give it a go…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he said (as quoted by The Daily Mirror): “Like all of us we are still waiting. I think all of us feel this decision has to be made. It just seems to have become tedious. It’s been going to be this week, it’s going to be due in days, it’s going to be in 48 hours. We need the people who are making the decisions to make that decision. We need them to make it. And be quick about it.”

And after hearing what Bruce had to say, Newcastle fans flooded to Twitter to share their reactions.

A few Newcastle fans lauded Bruce for speaking up and “saying it how it is”, with a couple of supporters in particular voicing their frustrations with the Premier League, labeling it as “disgraceful”.

One Magpies fan admitted that whilst he isn’t Bruce’s “biggest fan”, he appreciates the Newcastle boss’ outspoken comments and claimed it showed “he’s on side and has the fans’ interest”.

It’s fair to say Bruce is unimpressed with the amount of time it’s taking for the green light to be given for Newcastle’s takeover.

And it’s completely understandable too. Whilst this season is still yet to be finished, Bruce will be keen on looking ahead to the next campaign and making decisions on who to get rid of, and who to sign.

But with all this uncertainty hovering above the club, those kinds of important calls just cannot be made at the moment. It’s no surprise to see so many Magpies fans on board with what the manager had to say.

Leeds midfielder Adam Forshaw responds to fan backlash

Adam Forshaw’s injury at Leeds has been a puzzling situation, so much so that Phil Hay described it as strange following the club’s draw with Cardiff.

The midfielder suffered a hip injury in August and returned to play 45 minutes against Charlton in late September.

However, he hasn’t been since and it appears as though he’s really struggling with a constant niggle.

Marcelo Bielsa has previously claimed the situation is complicated but there has at least been some positive news on his recovery.

It’s been stated that he isn’t far away from a return but his battle with the sidelines has seen him take on a huge amount of flack.

Fans have called for him to be sold while some supporters have wondered whether he’ll ever play again.

Although some of those remarks may be tongue in cheek, it appears as though the constant barrage of comments has finally got to Forshaw.

The 28-year-old took to Instagram on Tuesday night to post an image of the squad out on a Christmas meal.

A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

However, one supporter called him out on his injury-hit spell, to which Forshaw issued a sarcastic one-word response.

The former Middlesbrough man was a vital part of Leeds’ early season form, playing six times and registering the best pass success rate of anyone to start for the Whites in 2019/20.

Whether or not he’ll be able to continue where he left off when he returns remains to be seen. Either way, it’ll be important for certain segments of the fan base to get off his back.

Southampton fans discuss Stuart Armstrong’s absence after injury update

Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed that Stuart Armstrong would miss the game against Watford due to an injury.

Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed the news in his pre-match press conference prior to the crucial relegation six-pointer against the Hornets this Saturday, and it comes as a real blow for both club and player at the cruellest of times.

“We have a few issues. One is Stuart Armstrong, in the last game at the end he cramped a little. He has a few problems with his hamstrings. He isn’t able to play at the weekend. Maybe two weeks he is out – after Newcastle we will look again.”

The Scotland international was just starting to find his groove after a period out of the XI during the early weeks of the campaign, and we recently outlined how the former Celtic man could soon become the Saints’ most important midfielder due to his energy and pressing ability – something that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu distinctly lack.

Hasenhuttl stated that Armstrong may be out for around two weeks, and the Southampton fans on Twitter have wasted no time in reacting to this news.

Let’s see what they’ve been saying…

West Brom fans drool over Kyle Bartley after Stoke victory

West Bromwich Albion returned to the top of the Championship table with a 2-0 victory over Stoke City on Monday night.

Slaven Bilic’s men cruised to all three points thanks to a goal from Matty Phillips, who bagged his sixth of the season and a penalty from super-sub Hal Robson-Kanu.

The Baggies also regained their two-point cushion at the league’s summit going into this weekend’s tie with Hull City.

It is also just the third time this season that they have kept a clean sheet, which has sparked quite a reaction from some of the Hawthorns faithful with centre-back Kyle Bartley drawing most of the glowing plaudits.

One supporter claimed the 28-year-old is more of a captain than Jake Livermore after his impressive leader-like showing from the heart of defence while another described him as ‘different class.’

A further member of the West Brom crowd was almost shocked by the fact that he had tweeted about how ‘awesome’ Bartley was with one more naming him the best player in the league.

Newcastle fans call out board members for dishonesty over Jaap Stam approach

Newcastle United did not approach the former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam to become the manager at St James’ Park, according to The Chronicle.

Stam, who is currently managing Feyenoord, told Voetbal International that the Magpies approached him just days after taking the reigns of the Rotterdam based-outfit.

It’s another headache in the Mike Ashley story after the businessman’s sale of the club to a Mexican consortium fell through recently, with the Sports Direct owner coming across as ‘rude’.

Fans of the North East club had made their feelings known about their controversial owner since the resignation of Kevin Keegan in 2008 and have been unable to force Ashley out.

Supporters were not impressed with the club’s stance on Stam, contrary to his claims in the Dutch media. One fan said that he knows sources within the club that are consistently dishonest and is not aware of the Dutch manager of telling lies. Another supporter reminded fans that the club admitted at Keegan’s tribunal that it intentionally misled the press, public and fans of the Magpies.

West Brom’s Romaine Sawyers is bringing the best out of Jake Livermore

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

West Brom currently occupy top spot in the Championship with Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest hot on their heels behind them in second, only by goal difference.

Slaven Bilic’s men were at one stage the only unbeaten side in the Championship before Leeds put pay to that with a narrow 1-0 victory up at Elland Road.

The Baggies responded with a 4-2 victory over Cardiff City at the Hawthorns just a few days later to leave their first defeat of the season fully in the past.

Their win just before the international break also signalled a momentous occasion for two members of the Albion squad as both Charlie Austin and Romaine Sawyers netted their first goals for the club.

The introduction of the latter has undoubtedly played a role in their fortunes so far this campaign, but Jake Livermore may be seeing the biggest rewards from that.

On the Chalkboard

Football FanCast have previously outlined why the club should have moved on from Livermore earlier in the year, but his performances this season under Slaven Bilic have started to prove otherwise.

In the squad last season, the 29-year-old was potentially being asked to do too much as he was without a suitable midfield partner – alongside Gareth Barry and Chris Brunt, that’s quite an ageing duo, so Livermore would have had to do the bulk of the groundwork.

But now with Sawyers alongside him, he’s able to sit a little deeper and play to his strengths.

So far this season, Livermore has contributed to the defensive game substantially by averaging 1.9 tackles per game, which has allowed Sawyers to advance forward to provide those key passes as the former Brentford captain is averaging 1.3 per match, via WhoScored.

The 27-year-old has even stated how he listens to everything Livermore says in a recent interview: “When Jake talks, I listen. He has been different class on and off the pitch.”

He also claimed the following: “We complement each other without strangling each other and he gives me so much confidence.”

But this is something that Livermore wouldn’t have been able to achieve without Bilic bringing Sawyers back to the club.

He’s clearly starting to flourish in a leadership role, especially with the previous mentioned experienced duo of Brunt and Barry both departing the club at the end of last season.

It seems as if having someone to nurture like Sawyers is something he’s relished. There’s certainly been an added layer of maturity to his game.

Rangers’ Jermain Defoe reveals the one goal he wishes he’d scored

Jermain Defoe has scored some incredible goals throughout his career.

His volley against Newcastle for Sunderland back in 2015 will go down as one of the greatest strikes in Tyne-Wear derby history, and his incredible strike against Crystal Palace for Bournemouth earned him a Goal of the Month award.

The Rangers striker knows what it’s like to net a spectacular strike, but there’s one goal in Premier League history that he wishes he could have scored himself.

Indeed, Defoe wishes he could have netted Ian Wright’s legendary effort against Everton.

You can see why the former England international is such an admirer of the Arsenal man’s goal, as Wright uses an excellent combination of pace, skill and technique to beat his man, get into position and finally chip the keeper.

With Defoe topping the scoring charts in Scotland this season there’s no reason why he can’t emulate this goal over the coming months while playing for Rangers, and if he did it would certainly be a Goal of the Season contender.

Barcelona fans react negatively to Luis Suarez’s return to training

Losing players due to injury has never been considered a positive thing but when you lose all three of your main forwards, two of which are Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, then the bad news quickly takes a more alarming turn.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel for Blaugrana, so the latest tweet from Barcelona’s official account would lead us to believe.

The club have officially confirmed that the Uruguayan has returned to training as they announced this big good news on their social media and Twitter accounts on Wednesday, a post you would anticipate to evoke widespread enthusiasm ahead of his return.

But many of the fans simply couldn’t care less about Suarez and all they wanted to hear about was what’s going on with Messi.

Many were also quick to label this news as “bad” and even “miserable”, while one fan labelled Suarez a “clown”.

You can see some of their reactions to the club’s official announcement in the collection of tweets down below.
