Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool now keen on signing £62m "total footballer"

Liverpool are now keen on signing a “total footballer” in the summer transfer window, but there is set to be fierce competition from a number of rival Premier League clubs, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Reds set to continue Premier League title pursuit vs Everton

Despite Arsenal’s 2-1 victory against Fulham on Tuesday, the Reds remain in a strong position to win the Premier League title, and they have the opportunity to restore their 12-point lead at the top of the table in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Having crashed out of the Champions League before going on to lose the EFL Cup final, the league title is the last remaining piece of silverware up for grabs this season, but if they manage to go all the way, it will undoubtedly still be considered a successful campaign.

One of the slight criticisms that could be made of Arne Slot’s side this season is perhaps their overreliance on Mohamed Salah, with Diogo Jota struggling with injuries while the likes of Federico Chiesa and Darwin Nunez haven’t exactly set the world alight.

As such, Slot seems intent on bolstering his attacking options this summer, and Liverpool are now keen on signing RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons, as reported by Romano for GiveMeSport.

There is a concrete chance Simons is on the move this summer, despite only recently signing for Leipzig permanently from Paris Saint-Germain, and several other Premier League clubs are also in the race for his signature, such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Netherlands'XaviSimonscelebrates scoring their third goal

The Dutchman could be available for a fee of around £58m – £62m, and the Premier League is one of the top destinations in his mind, particularly with Barcelona’s financial issues making it difficult for the La Liga side to compete for his signature.

"Total footballer" Simons could be destined for the top

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson is clearly a huge admirer of the 21-year-old, having lauded him as a “total footballer”, while also claiming he has “superstar potential” and the IQ to play all over the pitch.

Since then, the attacking midfielder, who can also play on the wing, has continued to impress for RB Leipzig, picking up seven goals and four assists in 19 Bundesliga outings this term, building on an impressive first season in Germany.

The Netherlands international has also been in top form for his country during the recent international break, being lauded as a “game-changer” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig after scoring against European champions Spain.

Liverpool could do with some more attacking depth if they are to compete on all fronts next season, with Jamie Carragher of the belief there are four or five players Slot doesn’t rate in his current squad, and Simons has proven he could be an excellent addition.

Rangers struck gold selling European hero who's now worth less than Raskin

There have not been many positives this season for Glasgow Rangers. The Ibrox side won’t win any domestic silverware, trailing their arch-rivals by 16 points in the Premiership title race, also being knocked out of the Scottish and League Cups.

Barry Ferguson did mastermind a 3-1 victory over Fenerbahce in the Europa League first leg of their last-16 clash, but even the most optimistic Rangers supporter will feel glory in Europe is beyond them.

Vaclav Cerny has been a hit since joining the club on loan from Wolfsburg, scoring 17 goals in all competitions, although finances will likely prevent the Gers from securing his signature on a permanent basis.

Hamza Igamane has also been another bright spark for the club. Costing just £1.7m from Moroccan side AS FAR last summer, the 22-year-old has since netted 13 goals in all competitions, despite this season being the first outside his native Africa.

Hamza Igamane

One of the most underrated players since he returned to the starting XI in October has been Nico Raskin.

The Belgian has missed only two games between September and the time of writing, establishing himself as a key member of the team.

How Nico Raskin has grown in importance at Ibrox

Against Celtic at the start of the year, Raskin was given the captaincy due to James Tavernier missing the game through injury.

During the 3-0 victory, Raskin provided an assist while also making two key passes, creating a big chance and winning 60% of his ground duels throughout the game.

He controlled the midfield, making four interceptions and three tackles which nullified Celtic and contributed to the stunning Old Firm win.

The midfielder has struggled with his injury problems during his first year or so at the club, but his performances this season have proved he is now indispensable to any future success at Ibrox.

Raskin may not offer too much in the final third, but in terms of providing effective support in the heart of the midfield, he has been crucial.

In the Premiership, the Belgian has averaged 3.6 tackles per game, along with averaging 7.8 ball recoveries, 1.6 interceptions and 1.4 clearances each match in the top flight.

If he continues this current form until the end of the campaign, the new manager might have to fend off interest from other clubs this summer.

Indeed, these impressive performances for the Light Blues have seen Raskin’s market value soar since joining the club.

According to Transfermarkt, the Belgian is currently worth around £5.5m and this value should only continue to rise over the coming months ahead of the summer transfer window.

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin

He has the highest market valuation in the entire squad apart from Cerny, who will depart this summer once his loan spell ends.

Whoever comes in to take charge of the Gers ahead of the 2025/26 campaign must utilise Raskin in his desired position, as he could be an ideal choice to take over the captaincy from Tavernier, especially following his display against Celtic in January.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

Having also starred in continental competition, shining against Fener last week and standing out against Spurs, he’s certainly following in the path of a Europa League hero from a few years ago.

Rangers' European hero is now worth less than Raskin

Joe Aribo may have only been at the club for three seasons, yet he developed from a raw talent to a player who scored in a major European final.

Glimpses of his talent were on show during the Gers title-winning 2020/21 campaign, where he registered 15 goal contributions – eight goals and seven assists – as the club went the entire league season undefeated.

From a personal point of view, the following season was even better. Indeed, the Nigeria international scored nine goals while chipping in with ten assists across all competitions, helping the Gers reach the 2022 Europa League final.

He opened the scoring in that match against Eintracht Frankfurt, becoming just the fourth player in the club’s history to score in a European final. Unfortunately, Rangers lost the game on penalties to the German side.

With Giovanni van Bronckhorst needing to raise some funds that summer in order to bring in the players he wanted, a few were moved on.

How Joe Aribo is playing in 2025

Calvin Bassey departed the Ibrox side in 2022, with Ajax signing him for a club-record fee after an impressive campaign.

This bolstered the coffers, but when Southampton came in for Aribo, a deal was concluded that could rise to around £10m, and it was too good to turn down, that’s for sure.

This fee proved to be a significant profit on the midfielder, although they would have a big gap to fill.

Aribo hasn’t exactly proved his worth on the south coast, however, struggling to adapt at times.

The “exceptional” gem – as so dubbed by his manager Ivan Juric recently – scored just twice for the Saints in his first season.

He helped them secure a place back in the Premier League last term, defeating Leeds United in the playoff final, but they look set to drop back down into the second tier.

Now part of a team that could end with the fewest points in Premier League history, Aribo has netted three top-flight goals. As a result, his value has decreased since making his move south of the border three years ago.

Now, according to Transfermarkt, Aribo is currently worth £5m and if he fails to perform in the Championship next term, this could drop even lower.

This valuation is even lower than Raskin’s at the time of writing, indicating that the Gers have struck gold by selling Aribo when they did, maximising the best possible transfer fee for the former Charlton Athletic midfielder.

The new manager will be aiming to bring in his own players for cheap, before making millions on them after a few years at Ibrox. That’s a certainty.

The next Aguero: Newcastle now battling to sign "fantastic" £12m sensation

Whilst Eddie Howe and his side have their sights firmly fixed on the Carabao Cup final, those away from the pitch at Newcastle United have now reportedly joined the race to sign a rising star this summer.

Newcastle battling to sign 'the next Aguero'

The Magpies have endured a mixed season in the Premier League, with their battle to secure a Champions League place in danger of coming up just short as things stand. In all usual circumstances, their campaign could be destined to end in frustration. This time, however, Wembley and the chance to salvage a moment to savour against Liverpool awaits.

Howe deserves great credit for putting the Magpies in contention to finally end their wait for silverware. The former Bournemouth boss has been forced to make do with his current squad in the last two transfer windows, occasionally forming makeshift sides as a result. However, that could finally change when this summer arrives.

The Magpies have already been linked with moves for the likes of Tammy Abraham and could yet also turn towards a rising star in an attempt to boost Howe’s squad once and for all.

According to Sabah, as relayed by Sports Witness, Newcastle are now battling to sign Semih Kilicsoy from Besiktas, who value their 19-year-old at just €15m (£12m) ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies aren’t alone in their interest though, with Premier League rivals Aston Villa reportedly set to submit a third bid in pursuit of his signature. Sparking a race between two sides fighting for European qualification this season, those at St James’ Park should be desperate to get one over on those in the Midlands.

Meanwhile, such a battle for Kilicsoy’s signature should come as no surprise. The teenager is a rising star who looks destined to reach the very top, having been dubbed ‘the next Sergio Aguero’ by former EFL scout Jake McGhee.

"Fantastic" Kilicsoy is one to watch

Of course, if Kilicsoy is anything close to the level that Aguero reached throughout an illustrious career then Newcastle could be in for a treat if they make their move this summer. The Besiktas gem has once again been a standout in Turkey, scoring four goals and assisting a further six in all competitions to follow up an excellent campaign last time out.

Praised for a “fantastic first professional season” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Kilicsoy is only just getting started. What is also worth noting is that in Aguero’s first season at Atletico Madrid, he managed six goals and two assists in La Liga compared to the 11 goals and two assists that Kilicsoy managed at 18 years old in the Turkish Super Lig last season.

So, whilst he has already been dubbed the next Aguero, the Besiktas star could yet become even better than the Premier League legend.

Man City now interested in signing 19 y/o who could be available for £66m

Manchester City are interested in signing an “exceptional” player who could be available for a transfer in the summer, according to a new report.

Man City suffer eighth defeat of Premier League season

The Blues continued their tricky run of fixtures with a home tie against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. Just a few days after being dispatched by Real Madrid in the Champions League, Liverpool came to the Etihad and looked comfortably in control despite often surrendering the ball to their hosts.

That leaves City in fourth place and level with Newcastle United on 44 points after their eighth defeat in the league. But despite being beaten once again, Pep Guardiola said his side played “really good” and he had “no regrets”.

“It was a good game. Tight game in the first half; the first half it was more open, and the second half they defended very deep.

“They always have the threat, but it is not easy to control it. We dropped them. Through our pressing or build-up, dropped the team there. I think Doku and Savinho played an incredible game and get to the byline a lot, but then just from there, we missed the magic. We played really good so I have no regrets. The chances in the final third, when we want to shoot and cross, for the amount we arrived there, we did not create much.

Manchester City managerPepGuardiola and Erling Haaland

“I saw a bright future. Other than Kevin [de Bruyne] and Nathan [Ake], they are the future of this club in the next years, with others who will come in future windows. So many players are here playing, but we know Erling [Haaland] will come, and we have important absences. Everyone was really, really good.

“The first goal from the corner, but we tried to play, and I know how the opponent will play. Second half, they were 11 players in the box. We did well because they don’t want to do that. Big compliment to them, but I am very pleased with the way we play.”

Man City interested in signing 19 y/o Juventus star

As Guardiola mentioned after the Liverpool game, more players will come to the club in future transfer windows as they build for the future. According to Caught Offside, Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz could be a future arrival a Man City with Juve Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli aware of the need to balance their books amid interest from the blue half of Manchester.

The report states that while Yildiz is one of Juventus’ most valuable assets, they could consider selling him in the summer transfer window. The Italian giants know selling the 19-year-old would help generate funds and improve their financial situation, and that is why they are looking to get between €80-90 million (£66-74 million). This has alerted City, who are interested in signing the player but face competition from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United.

Yildiz has already expressed his interest in moving to the Premier League, and that could alert clubs even more. The young Turkey star can play anywhere across the frontline, and this season he has chipped in with four goals and two assists in Serie A. His performances have also impressed his national team manager, who has labelled Yildiz as “exceptional”.

Crystal Palace plotting double swoop to sign £20m star and "great" defender

Having recruited so well from the Championship in the past, Crystal Palace have now reportedly set their sights on two impressive second-tier stars ahead of the summer transfer window.

Crystal Palace transfer news

The Eagles are once again soaring after Oliver Glasner a year on from when he arrived and turned their season around. Following initial struggles to replicate that form, the Austrian has got his side firing on all cylinders once again and Jean-Philippe Mateta wheeling away in celebration more often than not in what has been another key change in fortune.

Now eyeing a potential top-half finish, those at Selhurst Park will be keen to build on current form when the summer transfer window arrives. After already welcoming Romain Esse on a permanent basis from Millwall and Ben Chilwell on loan from Chelsea in January, Palace could seek further improvements.

Once again, those improvements could come courtesy of the Championship too, as talents continue to follow in the footsteps of Eberechi Eze and now Esse towards South London.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Crystal Palace are now plotting a double swoop to sign Hayden Hackney and Rav van den Berg from Middlesbrough this summer.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 24, 2025

The duo have both impressed in the Championship this season and have deservedly earned the interest of Palace, who could win the race for their signatures. Hackney, in particular, will not come cheap though. Boro reportedly value their defensive midfielder at as much as £20m this summer, but as Palace look to replace Will Hughes, he could be worth every penny.

Dubbed “great” by manager Michael Carrick last season, Van den Berg is impressive in his own right. Amid recent rumours once again linking Marc Guehi with a move away this summer, the 20-year-old could emerge to instantly solve Glasner’s centre-back problem.

Hackney is good enough to replace Hughes

With contract talks yet to prove successful, Glasner is set to have a Hughes-shaped hole to fill when the summer transfer window arrives in what will be a frustrating blow. The former Derby County man has become an important figure at the heart of the Austrian’s midfield, but as he potentially departs, the future of Palace’s midfield could arrive in the form of Hackney.

Without Hughes, there may be concern within Selhurst Park that Palace are about to lose their safest midfielder and often the man left to win possession back for his side. But not only is Hackney perfectly capable of replicating both of those traits, he’s performing those tasks more often than the Palace midfielder – albeit in the Championship.

Hayden-Hackney-and-Michael-Carrick

What’s most impressive is that the Boro star progresses play extremely well. One criticism of Hughes – especially when looking at the numbers – is that his passing range is almost too safe and too limited at times. Hackney, by contrast, sets his sights forward more often than not.

So, if Palace are seeking a replacement for Hughes – an heir to his midfield throne – then Hackney should be the man in waiting.

CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals: Can Lionel Messi's Inter Miami rebound, overcome 2-0 deficit against Brian White's Vancouver Whitecaps?

After a 2-0 leg one victory in Canada, can the white-hot Whitecaps hold on in leg 2, or will Messi magic prevail?

A spot in the first continental final of 2025 is on the line for four CONCACAF clubs this week. Tigres and Cruz Azul will square Thursday off to determine Liga MX's representative in the Champions Cup final, while on the other side of the bracket, Inter Miami host the Vancouver Whitecaps Wednesday in a clash between MLS standouts.

Vancouver seized control in the first leg, blanking Miami 2-0 at home in a result that raised eyebrows across North America. But with leg two set for South Florida – and Lionel Messi back in the squad – the tie is far from over.

That said, the Whitecaps' start to 2025 has been nothing short of remarkable. Sitting atop both the Western Conference and the Supporters’ Shield standings after 10 regular-season matches, they’ve quickly become one of the league’s most compelling stories. Under first-year head coach Jesper Sørensen, Vancouver is 7-1-2, tied for the most goals scored in MLS and holding the league’s best goal differential.

Heading into the return leg, they're brimming with belief.

“We won the first one and know what we’re going to face Wednesday – a great team with great players that have done this before,” Sørensen said. “We have to play at our best and we’re ready. We’re excited, but also focused. It’s a big opportunity, and I’m happy for the players. No matter the result, they’ll grow from this experience. We’re moving forward – and now we can do that with a smile.”

Inter Miami, meanwhile, enter with urgency.

After a quarterfinal exit in last year’s competition, this is already the furthest the club has gone – but a semifinal finish isn’t the goal.

“We’re trailing, and on Wednesday we have to believe in the comeback,” said manager Javier Mascherano following Miami’s 1-0 loss to FC Dallas. “There’s nothing to lose – everything to gain.

“From the first minute, we need to take the game to Vancouver through our play. You don’t come back from 2-0 without playing well. We need to focus on our game, control what we can, and get that first goal. The rest can follow – but only if we start the right way.”

Sunday’s loss to Dallas was Miami’s first of 2025 in MLS, but the club rotated heavily, resting stars such as Messi ahead of the decisive second leg. With a second cup on the line in the Messi era, Miami will need a big performance – and perhaps something special – to flip the script against the most in-form team in the league.

In front of a sold-out crowd of over 50,000 people at BC Place, the Whitecaps took leg one in utterly dominant fashion. Goals from U.S. international Brian White and midfielder Sebastian Berhalter – son of former USMNT manager and current Chicago coach Gregg Berhalter – led the Canadian side to a stunning 2-0 victory over the South Beach club.

They held to just nine total shots, only two of which were on target. Resilient in every area, specifically in the midfield, it led Vancouver to a big win – but more importantly – a clean sheet, and an advantage heading into leg two.

"I think it's fair to say that a lot of people who have seen us play have been happy with the attack… but we've been a good defensive team," said Sørensen post-match. "We also showed that today, even when the way we would like to play doesn't really work, and we make too many bad passes, and we lose the ball way too easy, then we can still rely on our structure and rely on our defense side."

Miami, meanwhile, realizes the hole it put itself in after the match. Without an away goal on the road in Vancouver, they're now at a spot where if they concede – at all – in leg two, the deficit grows even bigger.

"Nothing to lose, you know, nothing to lose," Mascherano said. "We have to try to win the game. We know that we have to score at least two goals and don't concede. And we will try to do it. Now, maybe the pressure is for Vancouver. They have to keep the result."

Heading into leg two of the tie, Mascherano reminisced about a famous night in 2017, when – as a player for Barcelona – he was part of a squad that overcame a 6-1 deficit against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League. Dubbed the "remantado," the Argentine manager believes such moments prove anything can happen.

"That night I learned that nothing is impossible. In football, everything can happen. Everything, absolutely everything," Mascherano said Tuesday. "An elimination that we were 4-0 down. I think it was 2-0, in the second half we had it almost there and then they scored a goal and we had to score three more and we did it because in the end, until the referee signals the end, everything can happen.

"I think that more than I can transmit as a coach, I have, at that moment, four teammates who shared with me the experience, and they live it their skin. That's the thing that they can convey to rest. Clearly the situation is different, there are no two equal games, the contexts are totally different, but I think that the tie-breaker and tomorrow's situation in particular will give us the possibility of getting through."

Berhalter, meanwhile, acknowledged that Vancouver can't let anything get to their heads. To win in the manner in which the club did, while adding in how successfully it started the 2025 campaign, there's a lot to be positive about. However, remaining composed and humble is how they are heading into Leg 2.

"Got one more game," said Berhalter. "We can't get ahead of ourselves. Thank the fans for coming out here and making an incredible atmosphere, but we've got one more game, so we gotta take care of business."

AdvertisementImagnVancouver's keys to success

With a two-goal advantage, Vancouver has a lot to play with – and room for error, too.

The goal for the Whitecaps has to be an early goal. If they can find the back of the net – at all, at any point – during the game, their odds of advancing improve even more due to the away goal rule. If they take an early lead, Miami would need to score FOUR unanswered to advance, and put even more pressure on them. Ultimately, the goal has to be to fluster them and force them into uncomfortable situations – whether through finding the back of the net, or playing hard, mentally and physically.

Getting White free in the box, with Ali Ahmed, Jayden Nelson, Emmanuel Sabbi, or Daniel Rios in wide roles to stretch their defense will be key. The have constantly been exposed on the right flank of their defense over the past year, and forcing pressure onto that side of the pitch, with White operating inside the 18-yard box, is likely their best bet.

The cards are in their hands, and one goal puts them in a fantastic situation as a result.

GettyMiami's keys to success

Score, and likely fast.

Vancouver's defense has been spectacular to begin 2025; they've conceded the least amount of goals across all of MLS (alongside the New England Revolution) with just seven – getting by them as the game goes on will be increasingly difficult. Miami knows it needs at least two goals to draw level and send the match to extra-time, while a third would see it advance into the final, but only if it keeps a clean sheet. If Vancouver scores even just one goal, it is four goals minimum due to the away goal rule, and extra-time is out the door as an option.

Freeing up Suarez in the final third, while getting Messi on the ball, has to be the game plan. The Argentine needs to be fed in and around the box to enable 1v1 situations where he can take on defenders. Meanwhile, Suarez will either be drawing defenders away from Messi to allow those take-ons, or he will free himself up around the six-yard-box to receive the ball.

Depending on how Mascherano lines up his squad, it could be a big evening for their two star forwards, but also 20-year-old USMNT midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi, who is having a breakout 2025 campaign. The attacking midfielder could be tasked with linking the midfield and the attack, while slowing Vancouver's counterattacks down, as well.

If the want a chance to play for the Champions Cup trophy, they need to score, score, score. No room for excuses, no room for error.

GOAL's prediction

It is going to be a tight match, especially knowing that Miami's ex-Barcelona quartet of Messi, Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets were all rested on Matchday 10 – meaning they will be on fresher legs. With both teams having played on Sunday, though, it will be a relatively level playing field.

Due to the unique rule of away goals being active, Vancouver will take this series and upset the Miami is going to win the match 3-1, but a lone strike from Vancouver will be enough to get it over the line with the two-legged affair ending 3-3 on aggregate, but the Whitecaps advance due to away goals.

Hazlewood unsure if multi-format quick could be ODI captain

Josh Hazlewood believes it would make for more stability if Australia’s next ODI captain was available for as many matches of the format as possible rather than regularly switching between leaders.Hazlewood has previously been vice-captain of the Test side and is a now an integral part of the ODI and T20I teams, after an outstanding 18 months in white-ball cricket, but said he had given no thought to the potential of following Pat Cummins’ path into captaincy to replace Aaron Finch.Cummins has been linked to the ODI job and on Tuesday did not rule it out but said workloads would need to be managed. If, as seems likely, Finch finishes his T20I career as well after the World Cup, Australia will need new captains in two formats. David Warner’s captaincy ban is set to be reviewed by Cricket Australia which would open the door for him finishing his international career in charge, while Steven Smith is another candidate along with Alex Carey for the one-day side.”With the quicks we are probably going to rest here and there so it’s not like Patty with the Tests playing every game, hopefully barring injury, [we will] probably use those moments in white-ball to rest,” Hazlewood said at the launch of Australia’s T20 World Cup kit. “That could create a reshuffle of captaincy and vice-captain all the time so you probably want someone there who is stable and playing every game, makes it a lot easier I think.”Related

Finch will not be easy to replace as a captain, but Hazlewood was confident the transition could be managed because most of the Australia side are now senior players at international level.”We’ve got a good relationship with Finchy, the bowling attack has been pretty similar for however long he’s been captain really,” he said. “We know each other really well and [he’s] pulling the strings out there on the field, discussions with the strategy teams and coaches.”Think all the teams feel they are quite senior and there are a lot of guys who take leadership upon themselves in the middle when they were doing their skill. There’s quite a lot of experience and think it will be quite easy for the next captain to come in and seamlessly transition.”While Finch has been constantly backed heading into the T20 World Cup title defence, if he does not score runs during Australia’s lead-up – which begins with three matches in India next week followed by series against West Indies and England – his form will continue to hang over the team, particularly amid the ongoing discussion over how Tim David fits into the side, assuming all the first-choice players overcome their various injuries. However, Glenn Maxwell said that what Finch brings as captain is a crucial part of the T20 side and also praised the way his personal struggles with the bat had not impacted him in the field during recent weeks.”Think we saw it a lot least year in the UAE, thought he was outstanding with our whole bowling group, brilliant with the strategy side of it and the way he keeps the group nice and calm,” Maxwell said. “It’s a very underrated thing in T20 cricket, you think it’s all helter-skelter…but he’s really good tactically, don’t discount his value as captain.”Once he gets out on the field and takes control of the team he’s just so focused on the job and almost forgets about what’s happened earlier in the day or what he has to do later. He’s been able to focus on the job in hand really well. That’s a credit to him.”Obviously it wasn’t the easiest time over the last little bit in one-day cricket, but his attitude never changed and the professionalism he brought to the team was brilliant. We are very thankful, when he took over the job it was a pretty tough time and he took care of the group and got them out the other side. We are all really proud the way he led us.”

Kulusevski’s dream teammate: Spurs ramp up bid to sign England international

We’re only in January, and Tottenham Hotspur’s season already depends on the cup competitions.

Ange Postecoglou’s side has been absolutely devastated by injuries this year, and while the Australian can certainly end the campaign with a trophy, that feels very unlikely indeed.

However, while there has not been much for Spurs fans to cheer about, one undeniable positive has been the development of Dejan Kulusevski.

The former Juventus ace has always been an important player for the North Londoners, but he has come on leaps and bounds this year, and based on recent reports, the club are looking to bring in an England international who could help him get even better.

Tottenham target England ace

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Tottenham have ‘ramped up their own bid’ to sign LOSC Lille star Angel Gomes.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report has revealed that the North Londoners have entered the race to sign the England international and could now beat fellow Premier League side West Ham United to the midfielder’s signature.

The good news is that the Lilywhites should be able to sign the former Manchester United prospect for free due to his £11k-per-week contract expiring in the summer, but the bad news is that he won’t be able to officially join until then either.

It could still be a complicated transfer to get over the line if the Irons step up their pursuit of other teams entering the fray, but given Gomes’ ability, Spurs should be doing all they can to secure this deal as soon as possible, especially as he’d be an ideal teammate for Kulusevski.

Why Gomes would be a dream teammate for Kulusevski

Okay, so if Kulusevski’s long-term role at Spurs is going to be that of one of the more attacking midfielders in the team, then there are a couple of reasons why Gomes would be an excellent teammate for him.

The first is that, as the Englishman is adept at playing in central and attacking midfield himself, he’ll be the player who can adjust his starting role to platform and allow the Swede to further hone his skills in that more offensive role in the middle of the park.

Moreover, due to his ability to play deeper, the “top quality” talent, as dubbed by former Spurs keeper Paul Robinson, is no stranger to defensive duties, as shown by the fact FBref places him in the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers for shots blocked in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League per 90.

However, he’s not just there to do the mopping up.

He is more than capable of dictating play, firing off dangerous passes and taking on opponents, as shown by FBref placing him in the top 1% for pass completion and successful take-on percentage, the top 3% for carries, the top4% for passes into the final third, the top 6% for progressive passes, switches and more, all per 90.

Not only do these statistics suggest that the Edmonton-born star would be able to play intricate passes into Kulusevski when he’s in dangerous positions, but it would also make him a player that opposing defenders would have to mark more proactively, thus naturally opening up more space for his future teammates.

Finally, the 24-year-old has already shown that he has a tough mentality, as he made the bold decision to leave Old Trafford in 2020 and back himself to earn a move from Portugal to a top-five league and now potentially back to the Premier League, all while breaking into the England setup, which is just the sort of player who’d improve the dressing room at Spurs.

Ultimately, signing Gomes this year feels like a total no-brainer for Tottenham, as his skill set and ability would undoubtedly improve the entire team, let alone Kulusevski.

Fulham eyeing move to sign Premier League "leader" who may replace Pereira

With rumours regarding Andreas Pereira’s potential exit not going away, Fulham have now reportedly set their sights on signing an in-demand Premier League midfielder for Marco Silva.

Fulham transfer news

The Cottagers remain one of the most exciting sides to watch in the Premier League. No longer a side scrapping away in the battle to avoid relegation, Fulham have once again become an established top-flight side under Silva – who is doing an excellent job. His side’s recent success may not come without its consequences, however. In fact, they could fall victim to their own success.

Fulham now keen to sign "special" Man City star ready to leave in January

He’s a man in demand…

With the January transfer window now open, Fulham are reportedly fearful that Marseille could reignite their interest in Pereira and secure the Brazilian’s signature this month. And they’re not the only club reportedly interested. Recent reports have indicated that Brazilian club Fluminense are progressing in talks to sign the midfielder in what would be a major blow this month.

It seems as though that fear has led them straight to a potential replacement too. According to Football Insider, Fulham are now eyeing a move to sign Will Hughes in what could come at no cost at all if he leaves Crystal Palace as a free agent at the end of the season.

The London club aren’t the only side interested, however, with West Ham United and local rivals Brentford also keeping an eye on the situation. A player with plenty of experience in the top flight, the interest in Hughes’ signature should come as no surprise.

From a business standpoint, selling Pereira for an impressive fee and welcoming a possible replacement in the summer without having to splash out, themselves, could represent a shrewd move for all involved at Fulham.

"Leader" Hughes could seamlessly replace Pereira

More combative than the elegant Pereira, Hughes would step straight in to replace the Brazilian at Craven Cottage and sit next to both Alex Iwobi and Sasa Lukic. Forming a tireless midfield three, Silva’s side could even benefit from swapping the old for the new all whilst wisely cashing in.

Also able to create whilst completing impressive work off the ball, it’s no surprise that Hughes has been at the centre of Oliver Glasner’s praise throughout his Crystal Palace tenure.

The Palace manager told reporters as relayed by Tribal Football last month: “Will Hughes not just a performer, he’s also a leader in the dressing room. He’s an experienced guy, an English guy, he’s been here for several years, he knows the club, he knows his teammates, and of course he’s an outstanding good football player.

“His passing, his fighting spirit, and he’s one of the few players, maybe a little bit old generation, who is talking on the pitch. Every manager is looking for some guys who are talking on the pitch, he’s one of them, so he’s very important for our game.”

Crystal Palace do have the option to extend Hughes’ Selhurst Park deal, but if they don’t, Fulham could be in a position to pounce in a cheap transfer.
