Everton linked to Arnau Comas

Everton could secure Rafa Benitez’s next Sergio Ramos after being linked with a move for Barcelona defender Arnau Comas ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish outlet Sport (as relayed by the Liverpool ECHO), the Toffees are one of two Premier League teams eager to secure the 21-year-old’s signature, with Leicester City also credited with an interest.

Comas’ current contract is set to expire next summer, meaning he could be available on a free transfer over the coming months, although Barca have the option to extend his stay by two years.

Benitez’s next Sergio Ramos

Despite the fact that the youngster is yet to make his first-team debut for the Blaugrana, Comas is believed to be highly rated by key officials within his boyhood club, including new manager Xavi Hernandez.

It is also claimed that it’s the player’s desire to stay at the Camp Nou and force his way into the senior setup, yet at 21, time is quickly running out for the 6 foot 2 beast to do just that.

As a result, the possibility of Comas departing Barca in the upcoming winter window appears to be high, and Benitez may be tempted to make a move.

Everton have kept just three clean sheets in all competitions in the opening weeks of the current campaign, and with Yerry Mina continuing to be linked with a Goodison Park exit, a new defender is likely to be on the 61-year-old’s wishlist.

Throughout his 38 appearances for Barcelona B, Comas has illustrated his ability both on the ball and as a natural captain, taking the armband on a permanent basis at the beginning of 2021/22.

His mature displays saw journalist Albert Roge label him a “leader” before stating that he “stands out for his ball output” after lauding his quality on Twitter.

Comas’ arrival on Merseyside would see Benitez working with another talented Spanish centre-back after having Ramos at his disposal during his brief spell in the Real Madrid dugout, and the experienced tactician could be the ideal coach to extract the best out of his compatriot.

Like Ramos, Comas possesses a ball-playing ability and staunch leadership, attributes that outweigh his age. He would be a very intriguing signing for the Goodison outfit.

Rangers manager news on Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman is reportedly now ‘one step away’ from becoming the new manager at Glasgow Rangers.

The Lowdown: No Van Bronckhorst?

It looked like Giovanni van Bronckhorst was certain to be the successor to Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, as the latter left to go and join Aston Villa.

It was reported that ‘positive talks’ were held between the Dutchman and the Glasgow club over the vacancy, but it now appears that he is merely one of three candidates still in with a chance of taking the job.

One of those other coaches could well be Koeman, who has been linked with the vacancy along with former Chelsea captain and Villa assistant manager John Terry.

The Latest: Koeman ‘one step away’

According to Fichajes, Koeman is now ‘one step away’ from signing for the Light Blues, having emerged as a serious candidate to take over from Gerrard.

The 58-year-old is reportedly the ‘main favourite’ to take charge at Ibrox, although Terry has also been named as a possible candidate to succeed his former England team-mate.

The Verdict: Avoid

After ultimately failing at Barcelona, where he was sacked last month after leaving them ninth in the La Liga table (The Guardian), Koeman should not be top of the Gers’ list to become their next manager, even if he has won nine trophies in his coaching career.

He would also not be a popular appointment with fans, who need someone to get behind straight away with an important Scottish League Cup semi-final clash against Hibernian coming up on Sunday.

Former Ibrox player Van Bronckhorst would be the ideal successor to Gerrard, given that he is loved by many Gers supporters. He also has an impressive managerial CV, guiding Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title in 18 years back in the 2016/17 campaign (BBC), as well as winning four other major trophies with the Rotterdam club.

There is still time to bring Gio back to his old club and duly forget about any further talks with Koeman.

Cancelo impressed vs Brugge

Manchester City managed to convincingly put their 2-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at the weekend behind them and set them up nicely for their Premier League showdown against Manchester United on Saturday after beating Club Brugge 4-1 in midweek in their latest Champions League outing.

Goals from Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus comfortably secured the three points for Pep Guardiola’s side in their latest European clash.

However, there was one City player, in particular, that ultimately stole the show on the night and that was defender Joao Cancelo.

The full-back was one of the five outfield City players that played the full 90 minutes in midweek and in that time managed to assist three of the four goals scored in what was a remarkable creative showing.

He was also tremendous from a defensive and technical point of view. Via SofaScore, he made three interceptions, won two tackles, one clearance, all while amassing 135 touches of the ball and completing 98 of the 108 passes he attempted.

That left him with a passing accuracy percentage of 91% while ultimately earned him a highly impressive overall match rating of 9.4/10, comfortably making him City’s highest-rated player on the day according to SofaScore.

If that wasn’t enough, the flying full-back also struck the woodwork with a shot during the encounter.

So far this season, the 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £49.5m according to Transfermarkt, has made an appearance in all but one of City’s games across all competitions so far this season, showing how important he is to the side.

In the Premier League, Cancelo has managed to rack up an average of 2.2 shots and 2.5 interceptions per game. A tally of 1.9 tackles per match also proves just how much of a useful asset he has been for Guardiola in an attacking and defensive sense with the Citizens managing to score 20 goals and concede just six in their opening ten league matches of the season.

The Portuguese international, who has been previously described as “brilliant” by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, has also managed to score two goals and provide four assists in the 16 appearances he’s made for the Citizens, demonstrating how much of an attacking threat he is as well.

With the Manchester Derby on the horizon, we feel that it should be an easy decision for Guardiola to start Cancelo at the weekend because he has undoubtedly been a significant figure for City.

Australia prepare to lift spirits

Big PictureFor Australia, this match should be as comfortable as a walk around an oval (not The Oval, winning there is much, much harder). It’s their first game since the 2-1 Ashes defeat in London last Sunday and is a warm-up for when they resume their battles with England in a Twenty20 international at Old Trafford on Sunday.Australia’s squad has changed significantly over the past four days, with Ricky Ponting heading home with the Test specialists, and Brad Haddin having surgery on his broken left ring finger. A batch of fresh faces has arrived to join Michael Clarke, the stand-in captain, as the group starts planning for the bigger tournaments ahead. Ponting will return towards the end of the seven-match one-day series against England to fine tune before the Champions Trophy in South Africa at the end of September. This will be the first contest between the teams outside a World Cup and is a big occasion for Scotland. They missed out on qualifying for the 2011 global event so have few opportunities to face the game’s major teams. Last Saturday they lost to Ireland in Aberdeen, scoring only 109, so facing the world champions, who are currently ranked No.3, will be even more difficult.Australia last turned out in a one-day affair against Pakistan in May, but a more relevant gauge is their form in the Twenty20 World Cup. They were knocked out in the first round, just like Scotland.Form guide (last five ODI matches, most recent first)

Australia – LWWWL
Watch out for…Scotland will depend on Gavin Hamilton, the captain and opener, for a strong start and a cool head. He played a Test for England (a pair went with one wicket) and has appeared in 34 ODIs for his country of birth. Scotland’s leading run-scorer with 1112, Hamilton registered his second century in the loss to Canada in Aberdeen last month.Brett Lee had a forgettable Ashes series, missing the first three games with a side injury and not convincing the selectors he was good enough for the final two. Pity Scotland’s batsmen if he runs in at full pace. His last proper bowl was against England Lions in Worcester at the start of July, so he has a lot of frustration to get rid of. And a lot to re-prove.Team newsOnly Navdeep Poonia is missing from the outfit picked to face Ireland last Saturday, which means Kyle Coetzer is still away with Durham. The Twenty20 specialists David Warner, Adam Voges, David Hussey and Dirk Nannes are with the squad, which currently contains 15 players, and the XI is unlikely to be finalised until shortly before the toss. Prepare for anything, along with a shivery maximum of 14°C.Stats and trivia Unless Australia arrange a friendly with Iceland on their next trip to Europe, this is as far north as they will get a game – Edinburgh’s latitude is 55 degrees north. Dunedin, in New Zealand, is the most southerly venue they visit at 42 degrees south. The teams have played twice at World Cups: in the 1999 event Australia won by six wickets during a go-slow success, and they backed up with a 203-run victory in 2007 after scoring 334 for 6 in St Kitts.Gavin Hamilton, Fraser Watts, Ryan Watson and Majid Haq played against Australia in that 2007 game, which also included Nathan Bracken, Shane Watson and Michael Clarke.Michael Clarke has led Australia in 11 ODIs, winning eight of them. Edinburgh averages 51mm of rain in August. Some of it is expected on FridayQuotes”It’s as big as it gets, that’s the bottom line. These opportunities are few and far between, the reality is the result is not the be-all and end-all, but we’ve still got a lot to get out of it.”
“The guys in the Twenty20 and one-day squad have been back home training, they’ve got a lot of good preparation, but not too much game time of late. It’s really important that we come out here and gel as a unit.”

Harry Maguire was awful against Watford

Manchester United slumped to their seventh defeat of the campaign as Watford ran out 4-1 winners at Vicarage Road in today’s Premier League clash, piling even more pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils almost went behind just minutes into the game after Scott McTominay clumsily brought down Josh King inside the 18-yard box, Ismaila Sarr had both of his penalties saved by David de Gea after the first one had to be retaken due to encroachment.

King soon made up for his teammate’s error, though, slotting in his fourth goal in as many games to give the Hornets a deserved lead just before the half-hour mark. Sarr doubled the home side’s lead prior to the half-time interval, giving United a mountain to climb in the second half.

In response to their dismal opening 45 minutes, Solskjaer introduced Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial at the interval, and it didn’t long for the former to make his mark on proceedings.

A Cristiano Ronaldo knockdown was slotted home by Van de Beek to give the Red Devils a glimpse of hope, but that optimism was wiped out when the struggling Harry Maguire received a second yellow card, ending their chances of another comeback.

Late goals from Joao Pedro and Emmanuel Dennis rubbed salt into the wounds of United and Solskjaer, with the under-fire boss facing increased scrutiny over his role in the Old Trafford dugout.

However, many of United’s problems against Watford were self-inflicted, none more so than Maguire’s seven-minute red card. The 28-year-old received a match rating of three out of 10 by Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst following his “panicky” display.

“The first-half was an improvement on recent club performances. Saved United a few times during the first-half horror show with blocks and a sliding tackle. Then the panicky play returned and he was sent off,” Luckhurst wrote.

Maguire’s underlying numbers are further evidence of his substandard showing against the Hornets. As per SofaScore, the England international won just one of his three duels throughout his 69 minutes on the pitch, made only one tackle and lost possession six times, highlighting his underwhelming afternoon.

Despite De Gea conceding four goals, it was one of his defenders who was most to blame for United’s latest defeat, possibly providing the final nail in Solskjaer’s managerial coffin.

Celtic dealt Starfelt injury blow

Celtic have been dealt a major injury blow regarding Carl Starfelt ahead of their upcoming Europa League clash.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by Sky Sports, the centre-back has been ruled out of both Thursday evening’s trip to Ferencvaros TC and Sunday’s visit to Dundee due to a hamstring injury picked up in the 0-0 draw with Livingston last weekend.

Speaking about the 26-year-old’s injury, Ange Postecoglou said: “We lost Carl Starfelt in the last game and similar sort of timeline to Tommy [Rogic] I suppose, we are hoping he will be back after the international break, but he will definitely miss these two games.

“It is always a blow when you lose players to injury. To be fair to Carl, he has played every game since he got here and it’s not surprising that he has something like this happen.

“We would have loved to have rotated him earlier, but we tried to build some cohesion, consistency in the back four and we didn’t want to chop and change too much because we had to at the start of the season.”

Postecoglou will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Starfelt has been since his £4.5m move to Parkhead this summer, in addition to the fact that Celtic simply must defeat Ferencvaros if they are to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Europa League, the confirmation that the centre-back will not be available for selection on Thursday is sure to have left Postecoglou gutted.

Indeed, over his 11 Scottish Premiership appearances this season, the £2.7m-rated defender has helped his side keep five clean sheets and has chipped in with one goal, as well as making an average of 1.5 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 3.7 clearances and winning 6.3 duels per game.

These returns have seen the Sweden international average a SofaScore match rating of 7.23, ranking him as the Hoops’ fourth-best performer in the top flight of Scottish football of players still in Postecoglou’s first-team squad.

Furthermore, the centre-back has also been in impressive form over his three Europa League appearances for the Bhoys, helping his side keep one clean sheet, in addition to making an average of 1.3 interceptions, one tackle, 1.7 clearances and winning 3.7 duels per fixture – with these returns seeing the 26-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 6.90.

As such, the fact that Celtic will be without Starfelt on Thursday evening will undoubtedly dent the Hoops’ chances of leaving Hungary with all three points in a fixture that could well prove to be season-defining for Postecoglou and his side.

Grinding the opposition

It was like watching a Ranji Trophy knockout game. India had taken a huge first-innings lead and went about batting New Zealand out of the game. In the Ranji Trophy, the first-innings lead amounts to a win in a drawn game; here, India’s 1-0 series lead means it doesn’t need to push for a result. It is New Zealand who need to do all the running to force a win that would ensure the series ends in a draw.New Zealand have now started six consecutive days bowling and have been on the field for some time on each of the last seven days of the series. India today ensured that New Zealand will be bowling at the start of the fourth day as well. There will be critics of this Indian approach as was the case when they employed 8-1 fields against Australia to defend their series lead in Nagpur last November. But why not grind the opposition when they are down? This Indian team appears to know when to be aggressive and when to let the other team make the mistakes. In Nagpur, Australia were forced to do all the running and lost their wickets in doing so.This match seems to be heading that way unless New Zealand script a world-record chase. But even their coach, Andy Moles, does not consider that likely. “Well, history will suggest that there are not too many sides who have come successful in this situation,” he said.India hold a 531-run lead, with two days to go, and a declaration does not seem imminent. “One of the things that I have spoken to the guys about is that we have to recognise the time when you have got to learn how to draw a Test match,” Moles said. “Certainly this one is shaping into a battle to save the Test match. Whenever we get the opportunity, we need to bat really well.”But should we get into this game where we can go into the last day with six or seven wickets left and we are in a position to chase down a large score, we will do that. It’s all about going into the last day, with lots of wickets in hand. Whatever is given to us, the first thing we need to do is set an early platform.”India need no adventurous declarations; just solid cricket and conserving the bowlers’ energy until they need to be unleashed would help achieve that elusive series win. Gautam Gambhir, who was instrumental in keeping New Zealand on the field with his 167, said India was not being defensive.”We’ve got two days and the kind of bowling that we have at hand, we can easily get New Zealand out in five sessions,” Gambhir said. “If we can’t do that, then we don’t deserve to win this Test match. We’ve got quality in the attack, good pace battery and a world-class spinner. I think five sessions is a lot of time for them to handle – we got them out in three sessions in the first innings. It’s important that we get to 600-plus and just attack. With 600 runs, psychologically New Zealand will only be looking to survive. They will have a lot of trouble with the kind of bowling attack we’ve got.”Some may not like this attitude and would have preferred having a crack at New Zealand tonight, but India have just chosen the firmer road to success. Different strokes for different folks.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Ashley Preece claim on Louie Barry

Reliable Aston Villa reporter Ashley Preece has admitted that there is a Plan B for Louie Barry in January.

Barry was one of a number of academy players who were sent out on loan in the summer.

He joined League One side Ipswich Town, however, things haven’t exactly gone to plan for the centre-forward, who is awaiting his first goal under Paul Cook.

The 18-year-old has started just three games in all competitions and hasn’t featured in eight of the Tractor Boys’ 10 third-tier fixtures.

Preece was asked by one Villa fan in a Q&A for Birmingham Live on Wednesday about Barry and if the club were planning on recalling the forward in the winter window.

He revealed that Villa are monitoring Barry closely, with a possible plan to end his Ipswich stay before loaning him to a League Two side in the New Year where he would feature more regularly from the off.
