Report claims Man Utd are in talks with "unique" manager to replace Ten Hag

Manchester United could finally have found their replacement for Erik ten Hag this summer, it has been reported.

Ten Hag under pressure

There is no doubt that the rest of the season appears to be Ten Hag's final chance to keep hold of his position as Manchester United boss beyond this summer, especially with Sir Jim Ratcliffe now in control of sporting decisions. Currently 6th in the Premier League and looking like a huge outside bet for Champions League football next season, they are out of all European competitions too.

They have an FA Cup quarter-final tie against title-chasing Liverpool to come, which represents their last shot at silverware this season. Should they be knocked out, and results continue to fluctuate in the top flight, it could prove curtains for Ten Hag's tenure at the Theatre of Dreams.

Already major backroom changes have been made since the arrival of Ratcliffe in December 2023, with Omar Berrada arriving from Manchester City to take on the CEO role, while there is hope that both Dan Ashworth and Dougie Freedman will also take up roles from Newcastle United and Crystal Palace respectively.

That could take plenty of transfer pressure away from the manager, with Ten Hag particularly having been accused of having too much control over transfers in the past, which led to signings like Antony, Sofyan Amrabat and Tyrell Malacia, none of whom have worked out as intended. But will he be there even in a reduced role?

Man Utd in De Zerbi talks

Now reports suggest that a decision could well have been made after all and that it is Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi that Ratcliffe has identified to be the next man across the threshold at OId Trafford. It has already emerged that De Zerbi's Brighton contract contains a hefty £12m release clause should any club wish to land the Italian this summer, and United are thought to be weighing up a move.

That is according to Spanish outlet El Nacional relayed by Caught Offside, who report that Barcelona are also keen on De Zerbi to replace the outgoing Xavi in Catalunya this summer, but it is the Red Devils who are in negotiations.

They state that Ratcliffe has 'opted to fire' Ten Hag and 'may interfere in Barca’s search for a new coach', with both sides chasing a manager who will combine an attractive brand of football with results.

De Zerbi certainly fits that bill. Having taken over from Graham Potter at the AMEX stadium last season, he has seen his side both score and concede plenty of goals and has been responsible for plenty of tactical tweaks for other managers this season.

Should they opt for De Zerbi, they would be landing a manager described by Manchester City's Pep Guardiola as "one of the most influential" since the turn of the millennium. Guardiola dubbed De Zerbi "one of the most influential managers in the last 20 years" because of this brand of football earlier in the campaign, with the City boss adding that "there is no team playing the way they play. It is unique."

Should he arrive to rival Guardiola in Manchester, it could lead to some of the most tactically fascinating battles between the two clubs ever seen.

Danny Mills names “unplayable” Leeds hero as best striker he’s played with

Danny Mills has hailed one of his former Leeds United teammates as “unplayable”, and it's a striker who could have thrived in his prime alongside the current star attackers playing under Daniel Farke.

Leeds United’s top goalscorers

Those at Elland Road are looking to win promotion from the Championship back to the Premier League at the first time of asking and are currently in a good position to do so.

Farke has transformed Leeds’ fortunes after arriving in the summer, shoring up the defence and creating an exciting attacking front four. Stars of the season have been Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, who have shone playing important roles.

Meanwhile, summer signing Joel Piroe has also impressed in front of goal, with Dan James, Wilfried Gnonto and Patrick Bamford also chipping in.

One player who would have loved playing in this current team in his prime is Mark Viduka, with the Australian coming in for recent praise from Mills.

Danny Mills hails former Leeds teammate Mark Viduka

Speaking to Football FanCast on behalf of 888 Sport, Mills was asked who was the best striker he’s played with and against, to which he mentioned Viduka.

Viduka arrived in Yorkshire from Celtic back in 2000 and spent four productive years at Elland Road before leaving Leeds for Middlesbrough in 2004.

Viduka actually made more appearances for Leeds than any other club, scoring 71 goals in 165 games in a Whites shirt. His most famous game for Leeds was the 4-3 win over Liverpool, with the centre-forward scoring all four goals in a memorable Premier League game.

Hopefully, Leeds, under Farke, can bring the good times back in the top flight, and who knows, they could soon be in the market for a Viduka-like striker of their own to replace Bamford, who is now 30 years of age.

Villa could sell Tottenham their top talent who Gerrard tipped for stardom

A journalist's sources have insisted that Tottenham could potentially do business to sign a "top talent" who Steven Gerrard tipped for stardom.

Spurs want new midfielder for Postecoglou

Since the beginning of this January transfer window and beforehand, widespread reports have made clear Spurs' desire to sign a new midfielder.

"Fantastic" player's camp think he's eventually going to play for Tottenham

Manager Ange Postecoglou is believed to be personally keen on bringing in a new midfield running man this year, and one who can alternate with playmaker James Maddison when required (Miguel Delaney). This has lead to repeated links with Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, who they held a serious interest in signing last summer but couldn't quite get a deal over the line.

The Englishman's stock has only risen since then, becoming a key player under Mauricio Pochettino over his 20 Premier League starts for Chelsea so far this season. His new-found importance to Chelsea could make a last-gasp January deal hard to pull off, though, with chairman Daniel Levy and the Lilywhites recruitment team weighing up alternatives to Gallagher as Postecoglou refuses to completely rule out more activity.

Atalanta star Ederson has admirers at Spurs in this regard, and a report this week by reliable journalist David Ornstein in The Athletic stated that Tottenham have made their interest in Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey abundantly clear. The 22-year-old, who can play across midfield and as a central attacker, has impressed over his 10 league appearances this season and would count towards Spurs' homegrown quota.

Jacob Ramsey for Aston Villa

Ornstein listed Tottenham's interest in Ramsey in a list of "deals that could happen before deadline day", with HITC and journalist Graeme Bailey now sharing a further update.

Sources "insist" Villa would consider selling Ramsey to Spurs

According to their information, sources "insist" Villa would consider selling Ramsey to Spurs as well as other interested sides like north London rivals Arsenal and Newcastle United. European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Juventus are also said to be fans, but Villa boss Unai Emery appears reluctant for his club to let him leave.

“Jacob Ramsey is a very important player, he grew up in the academy and his progression is getting better,” said Emery to The Birmingham Mail (via HITC). “His level is increasing a lot and I want to keep him here with us."

The highly-rated Englishman was also tipped for stardom by former Villa manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who is now in charge of Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.

"He is a top talent, I’m loving every moment of working with him. He is getting stronger with each game because we’re giving him the platform to express himself. He is in a wonderful place," said Gerrard to TNT Sports.

"Jacob Ramsey is Jacob Ramsey. He will be a terrific player. It won’t be long before the whole country is watching him I’m sure. He is right up there, let me tell you.”

'Don't want to think about it' – Mashrafe shrugs off retirement talk

Bangladesh Cricket Board has left the decision on his future with the ODI captain

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has dismissed talk of his possible retirement from the game at the end of the World Cup, saying that he hasn’t given the matter any thought. He did, however, reiterate that this would be his last World Cup.”This is definitely my last World Cup, but I will not be retiring after the tournament,” Mashrafe, 35, told ESPNcricinfo. “I don’t want to think about it at the moment, especially with the tournament still in progress. It is a distraction. People become emotional during these times.”But if there’s an instruction from the board, I will have to think about it.”Mashrafe, who became a member of the Bangladesh parliament earlier this year, has never actually hinted at retirement, but speculation has been rife about his future. The move to politics, coupled with his hamstring problems – he has a history of seemingly career-threatening injuries – have only added fuel to the guesswork. But he has led his team well at the World Cup, where Bangladesh have seven points from seven games, and are in the race for the semi-finals.As for Bangladesh Cricket Board bosses speaking to him about his future, Mashrafe has their backing too. “He is leading the side very well, so we are not thinking of anything at the moment,” BCB director Jalal Yunus said. “The decision is up to him, whether he wants to continue playing and leading the side or not. We leave the ball in his court.”The board is fully focused on the World Cup, as we are now in with a chance to play in the semi-finals.”Bangladesh don’t have a lot of ODIs coming up in the next 12 months, although they play a lot of T20Is in the run-up to next year’s World T20 in Australia. As for the World Cup, they have group-stage fixtures lined up against India (Birmingham, July 2) and Pakistan (Lord’s, July 5).

Williams opened the scoring of the match in the 57th minute with a perfectly-placed header, much to an eruption of celebration from her teammates on the pitch. The momentous goal cemented her name in history as she passed Chelsea superstar Sam Kerr's record that has stood since 2019.

Williams has long been a star for club and country, but now, she will forever be recognized as one of the best goalscorers women's soccer has ever seen.

The 30-year-old U.S. international was drafted into the league in 2015 by the Western New York Flash – who eventually became the North Carolina Courage. She followed the club to the southeast coast of the U.S. where she bagged 45 goals in a four-year span.

Williams was traded to the KC Current in 2022, but only made one appearance due to injury. She then joined Gotham in 2023 via trade and has since made history, helping them to their first-ever NWSL title last season while smashing the scoring record in 2024.

Williams herself has claimed four NWSL titles, three NWSL shields, a league MVP award and one Golden Boot award. She has 63 international caps with the USWNT, as well.

DID YOU KNOW?

Both Kerr and Williams have both played for the Flash and Gotham, and the two overlapped as teammates in 2014 with the Western New York side.

Newcastle ready to pay £68m+ to sign new star defender ahead of Real Madrid

Newcastle United are believed to be in pole position to complete the signing of an "elite" player in a potential big-money deal, a new transfer report has claimed.

Newcastle linked with Ousmane Diomande

The Magpies have suffered huge problems with injuries this season, with a host of important players missing for big chunks of action at different times.

One of the biggest losses for much of the campaign has been Sven Botman, with the Dutchman one of the first names on Eddie Howe's team sheet when he is fit and firing, playing a big role in them finishing fourth in the Premier League last season. This term, however, the centre-back has been limited to just seven starts in the league, and only one in the Champions League, and he has been a huge miss.

With Botman struggling with injuries and the likes of Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles both in their 30s now, Newcastle could target a new central defender this month, and Sporting CP ace Ousmane Diomande has emerged as a primary target for the Magpies.

The 20-year-old has already become a key man for his current club, despite being so young, and Newcastle have reportedly made contact with him over a move to St James' Park. Now, a fresh update has emerged – one that further suggests he could be heading to the Magpies in the near future.

Newcastle favourites to sign Ousmane Diomande

According to a report from Spain, Newcastle are now the front-runners to complete the signing of Diomande, with the Magpies ready to pay his €80m (£68.8m) release clause.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid are all mentioned as possible suitors in the report, highlighting his quality as a player, but it looks as though Howe's men are in pole position to snap him up, with the player one step away from Newcastle.

Diomande looks like a fantastic young prospect with most of his career ahead of him still, so for Newcastle to be in such a strong position has to be considered exciting.

While they have struggled so far this season, the fact that they are seemingly ahead of some huge club in the race to sign the Ivorian says so much about the strides the club have made in recent years. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig is someone who has been left hugely impressed with the Sporting CP ace, saying of him:

"Ousmane Diomande. You rarely see a player with such high ball-playing and pure defender skills. There are some tactical improvements but I'm quite sure this kid will play for the best teams in the world. The signs of elite talent."

Bringing in a long-term centre-back partner for Botman could be high on Howe's agenda, and Diomande ticks so many boxes when it comes to suiting Newcastle, completing 91.2% of his passes in the Primeira Liga this season, as well as winning an average of 1.9 aerial duels per game.

West Ham chiefs pushed into urgent transfer action amid "internal talks"

The January transfer window is set to be an intriguing one for West Ham as a report this week shares "internal talks" involving the club's hierarchy.

Steidten's rumoured West Ham transfer plans for January

Co-chairman David Sullivan and technical director Tim Steidten are said to be looking at the winter market as a resolution to some of manager David Moyes' squad depth problems.

West Ham "leading the way" to sign striker who Shearer thinks is "clinical"

Steidten is chasing a new forward.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 12, 2023

As reported by club insider ExWHUemployee, Sullivan is beginning to trust in Steidten as his right-hand man when it comes to West Ham's recruitment, and it is believed the German has earmarked the signing of a striker as top priority for next month.

“Tim Steidten’s role at the club has grown in seniority since his arrival,” stated Ex on Patreon (via West Ham Way).

“His knowledge, targets and dealings have really impressed Sullivan, who now fully trusts Tim as his right-hand-man. This will almost certainly mean that Steidten will be leading the search for our next manager in the future. However, its understood his main focus for now is player contracts and January recruitment – with a striker top of the list.”

Of the strikers linked with a move to east London, it is believed West Ham are eyeing a move for Armando Broja from Chelsea. They're apparently in pole position to sign the Albanian as things stand (Football Transfers), with Stuttgart star Serhou Guirassy tipped to potentially join Moyes as well.

Elsewhere, there have been some suggestions that West Ham could target a new central midfielder. Indeed, as per recent rumours, Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is a target for Steidten and he is "ready to quit" Eastlands mid-season amid his lack of consistent opportunities (Football Insider).

West Ham chiefs pushed into urgent transfer action

Next month could be crucial amid the pressure surrounding Moyes' position, with West Ham previously looking like they were turning a corner before their 5-0 humiliation at Fulham.

Now, journalist Pete O'Rourke has shared an update on the club's transfer plans, and it's believed Steidten and co may be set for a very busy month.

Writing for Football Insider, O'Rourke claims West Ham hierarchy realise they "urgently" need signings, coming amid "internal talks" being opened over a new forward at the London Stadium.

As a result, "multiple signings" are expected to come in mid-season in what is an exciting update. As well as a striker, the Irons will look to bolster other key areas with a host of players leaving for free at the end of this season as things stand.

James Ward-Prowse – £30m

Edson Alvarez – £33m

Konstantinos Mavropanos – £17m

Mohammed Kudus – £37m

Andy Irving – £1.5m

Michail Antonio, Pablo Fornals, Vladimir Coufal and Lukasz Fabianski are all candidates to leave the club on a Bosman in 2024 as things stand, and it will be interesting to see if any of the aforementioned are tied down. Interestingly, reliable transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has also backed that the Hammers could be one of the more active sides when it comes to potential fresh faces, so it could be a busy start to 2024.
