Fabrizio Romano: Wolves finalising details of deal to sign young midfielder

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano says Wolves are now finalising the details of a deal to sign one promising young midfielder, who's going on quite an upward trajectory.

Gary O'Neil praised after impressive debut season at Wolves

The Old Gold have been very impressive under head coach Gary O'Neil this season, despite Saturday's FA Cup heartbreak to Coventry City, coming after the Englishman was brought in to replace Julen Lopetegui last year.

Wolves could unleash “impressive” academy star to ease Neto’s injury

Gary O’Neil has a huge attacking dilemma to solve.

ByTom Lever Mar 15, 2024

Wolves finished 13th in the league last season, but so far, they're on course to better that and could even seal a European qualification spot – as O'Neil's side contend with the likes of Brighton, West Ham, Newcastle and potentially even Man United for a place in the Europa League as things stand.

Few could've envisaged the stellar job from O'Neil, and there have even been suggestions that he's one of the league's best managers this season.

“A new contract for O’Neil will be well deserved," said journalist Dean Jones to GiveMeSport recently.

"I think the Manager of the Year award will be given to whoever wins the title because there will be major narratives around that, whether it’s Klopp, Guardiola, or Arteta lifting the trophy. But outside of that, you would have to say O’Neil has done an immense job and certainly has achieved more than people expected from him.

“Wolves have to give him a new deal; otherwise, he will be poached in no time. At the start of the season, fans said they needed to get rid of him, but now I bet they would be gutted if he left.”

The 40-year-old was originally seen as a bit of a step down from an elite, trophy-winning boss like Lopetegui, who's won trophies at the highest level and even managed clubs like Real Madrid.

However, Wolves' popular head coach has proved doubters very wrong overall, with there even being some putting O'Neil's hat in the ring to manage England sooner rather than later.

The Midlands side will also be planning for the future under O'Neil, as reports suggest Wolves are keen to offer their manager a new contract and keep him for the foreseeable.

From transfers to the overall structure of Wolves, Jeff Shi and co must do their utmost to convince O'Neil that he can build a winning side over the years to come.

Wolves close to finalising detail for Matheus Mane

Signing some of Europe's most up-and-coming rising prodigies could do wonders to sway O'Neil, with Romano now claiming Wolves are finalising a deal to sign Matheus Mane.

The midfielder, who currently plies his trade with Rochdale in non-league, is just 16 years of age but has done enough to earn a call to their academy.

Southampton transfer news: Saints in race for former Celtic ace Dembele

Southampton are one of several sides already planning their summer business, and they are now eyeing up a move for one of the Football League's brightest talents.

Southampton planning for top flight status

Though they have been unable to keep up with the top three in the Championship this season, Russell Martin's Southampton side still have a serious shot at promotion come the end of the season, with the play-offs looming large for the Saints.

The highest points tallies in Championship history

Leeds and Burnley recently made second-tier history.

ByCharlie Smith May 17, 2025

Currently fourth in England's second tier, they sit 15 points clear of seventh placed Hull City, meaning that a spot in the play-off semi-finals is almost mathematically certain with just eight games left of the season.

Should they bounce back to the top flight at the first time of asking, it would represent a major success but would need them to step back into the transfer market in order to ward off the threat of immediate relegation once more.

To that end, they have already begun drawing up their list of targets, with one man's name at the top.

Saints join battle for attacking reinforcement

As per HITC, Southampton are one of several clubs pursuing a move for Karamoko Dembele, the former Celtic youth sensation who is currently contracted to Stade Brest in France but is spending the campaign with League One side Blackpool.

Always offering plenty of promise coming through the ranks at Celtic, his time in Glasgow fizzled out and he looked to rebuild his career elsewhere. At Blackpool, he seems to have found a natural fit for his talents, and is beginning to show his early promise once more.

Still just 21-years-old, Dembele has grabbed 6 goals and 11 assists from midfield this season, helping Blackpool into the fight for a play-off place come the end of the campaign.

Blackpool boss Neil Critchley is a huge fan of Dembele, and has helped him shine for the Tangerines this season. He was particular effusive in his praise after his side's 2-0 win over Bromley in the FA Cup earlier in the campaign.

"He was a real handful in the first half,” he told the media. "He plays the game in a unique way, and has football personality. He will take the ball in any situation and can make things happen.

"He’s exciting and can be beautiful to watch. What we need to do now is help him to build durability where he can produce that for longer periods of the game”.

And HITC add that Brest could be tempted to cash in on their asset, with clubs from around the Premier League and Championship showing an interest in the young attacker. They claim that Fulham, Brentford, Wolves, West Ham United and Everton are all among those 'keeping tabs' on Dembele, while the Championship interest is represented by Saints, Leeds United and Leicester City, all of whom could be in the Premier League themselves next season.

While Southampton may face a melee for his signature this summer, should they be able to offer regular game time to the youngster they may well have an advantage in the race to sign him.

World Cup final umpires Dharmasena, Erasmus to stand in last two Ashes Tests

In a late change, the ICC has tweaked the duties of the officials for the fourth Ashes Test, swapping the Sri Lankan pair of Kumar Dharmasena and Ruchira Palliyaguruge around. This means Dharmasena will partner South African Marais Erasmus in the middle at Old Trafford, as well as in the final Test at The Oval, while Palliyaguruge, originally listed as one of the on-field umpires, will be the TV umpire for the final two Tests of the series. As per the original appointments, Dharmasena, who had paired with Erasmus in the eventful men’s World Cup final at Lord’s in July, was scheduled to be the TV umpire for the Old Trafford Test.ESPNcricnfo understands that Palliyaguruge, who is on the ICC’s International Panel, was always scheduled to be the TV umpire for the final Test of the Ashes, starting September 16. But his duties at Old Trafford were changed because the ICC wanted two Elite Panel umpires officiating on the field in the final two Tests of the marquee series, which is locked 1-1.Although the ICC did not make the reasons behind the changes public, it isn’t a secret that the standard of umpiring in the first three Tests has been iffy, with Joel Wilson, Chris Gaffaney and Aleem Dar all making a number of errors.Australia’s equally poor reviewing was also exposed when Wilson incorrectly judged Ben Stokes not out in an lbw decision off Nathan Lyon during the penultimate over of the Headingley Test.Incidentally, Trinidadian Wilson was one of the two umpires (along with England’s Michael Gough) elevated by the ICC in July to the Elite Panel after the annual review done by a panel comprising Geoff Allardice (ICC general manager – cricket), the match referees’ pairing of Ranjan Madugalle and David Boon, and Sanjay Manjrekar (commentator, former India batsman).Dharmasena and Erasmus, too, were in the spotlight during the men’s World Cup final between England and New Zealand at Lord’s when England were incorrectly awarded six runs instead of five in an overthrow incident in the final over of the match. England went on to win the final.Dharmasena subsequently admitted the error but said he would never regret the decision. He was also involved in an incident with Jason Roy in the semi-final between England and Australia when he incorrectly gave Roy out caught behind.

Fabrizio Romano: Wolves "showing interest" in free transfer for Arsenal gem

Whether it's this summer or further down the line, Pedro Neto seems destined to leave Wolves eventually. Even though he's only played 14 Premier League games this season, he ranks third in the assist charts (eight), and on a per-90 basis, he leads the way outright (0.63).

Inevitably, that form has attracted the attention of some of the best sides in the country. Arsenal have a "long-standing admiration" for Neto, while Manchester City like him too. A move away from Molineux was never on the cards in January, but it will become increasingly difficult to hang onto him.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

From that point of view, it might be wise for Gary O'Neil to find a ready-made replacement even before the Portuguese's inevitable exit – ideally a young, left-footed right-winger. One potential candidate who fits the bill has already emerged.

Wolves eye up Cozier-Duberry

According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves are interested in Amario Cozier-Duberry at Arsenal, along with fellow Premier League side Newcastle and European clubs like Borussia Dortmund, Ajax and Anderlecht.

The 18-year-old is in talks with Arsenal over a new contract ahead of the expiry of his current deal in the summer, but no agreement has been reached yet. Wolves, then, are lurking in the hope of snapping him up for free in case negotiations "collapse".

Saka may help Wolves sign Cozier-Duberry

There's no doubt that Cozier-Duberry is one of the biggest talents in the Arsenal academy right now. Across 37 games for the under-21s, he's scored 12 goals and provided 18 assists, having also been involved in 18 goals in his 31 outings for the under-18s.

ByTom Lever Feb 6, 2024

This season, he's netted seven times and set up a couple more in 13 games overall, with five goals and two assists at Premier League 2 level. Only one Arsenal player – Khayon Edwards (seven) – has scored more in that competition, and only two players aged 18 or under – Spurs' Will Lankshear (12) and Chelsea's Leo Castledine (nine) have posted more goal contributions.

At the international level, meanwhile, Cozier-Dubbery has now amassed eight caps for England's under-19s, bagging three goals, and he looks very likely to feature in the squad for this summer's European Championships.

Mikel Arteta has already recognised his talent by taking him to Dubai for a first-team training camp last month and naming him on the bench for a Champions League game against Sevilla earlier this season, but he may not extend his deal unless he sees a clear pathway to the first-team. With Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli both 22, the winger positions seem to be occupied long-term. If he has any doubts at all, then Wolves may hope to be the team who capitalise.

Tottenham readying firm move for star who Lange tried to sign at Villa

Tottenham are believed to be readying a "firm move" to sign an "underrated" star this summer, a player who technical director Johan Lange interestingly tried to sign during his days at Aston Villa.

Lange enjoys terrific debut transfer window

All eyes were on the Dane as he geared up for his first transfer window at Spurs last month, especially considering he stepped into the shoes of former transfer chief Fabio Paratici.

Spurs want him “to the tune of millions”.

Lange was credited with some astute signings at Villa Park, and his January transfer window at Spurs only further heightened his reputation. Indeed, the official helped to broker a last-minute hijack for teenage sensation Lucas Bergvall, with the north Londoners beating Barcelona to Lange's countryman.

Before Bergvall's signing, Lange also helped to seal deals for defender Radu Dragusin, who joined in a £25 million move from Genoa, and attacking midfielder Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig.

The Lilywhites shifted deadwood aplenty and saved a lot of money by cutting player salaries as well in what is considered a pretty 10/10 transfer window where Lange is concerned.

It will be interesting to see what Spurs' employees have planned for the summer window, and some reports suggest Barcelona star Raphinha is among the potential Lange targets for later this year.

Tottenham "ready to make a firm move" for Conor Gallagher

Chelsea star Conor Gallagher is a name who supporters will be more than familiar with, as he was heavily linked throughout January and last summer.

The 23-year-old has played a starring role under Mauricio Pochettino this season, and it is believed Chelsea are eager to tie him down with a new contract as a result. However, little progress is being made yet, which gifts Spurs the chance to sign him if both player and club can't agree fresh terms.

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

That is according to The Telegraph and journalist Matt Law, who claims Tottenham are "ready to make a firm move" for Gallagher this summer if his future remains unresolved.

Lange actually tried to snap up Gallagher "some years ago" when employed at Villa, so it appears the Scandinavian has another chance at getting his man through the door, but this time at N17 if all goes to plan.

Called "very underrated" by members of the media, Chelsea's midfield ace would also count as homegrown.

Tottenham have set sights on another rising star after Antonio Nusa

Tottenham have set their sights on another rising star after Antonio Nusa as chairman Daniel Levy and the recruitment team eye a new target.

Spurs enjoying productive January window

A lot of business has been done at Spurs this month, and in quick fashion. Manager Ange Postecoglou, who was public in his desire to bring fresh faces through the door quickly, has been granted his wish.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 24, 2024

Timo Werner arrived on loan from RB Leipzig, with the deal though to contain an option to buy him in the summer. Following the German, Spurs sealed a permanent move for much-needed new centre-back Radu Dragusin, who signed from Genoa for around £25 million.

To make way for these new arrivals, and balance the books in terms of player salaries, the Lilywhites also agreed loan exits for as many as six players.

The likes of Ivan Perisic and Eric Dier, who sealed moves to Hajduk Split and Bayern Munich respectively, have certainly played their last games for Tottenham. Dier and Perisic's deals expire later this year, so the loan deals will allow both Hajduk Split and Bayern Munich to agree summer free moves rather than pay Spurs an outright fee this month.

This is still good business for the north Londoners, though, as it sweetens the transfers of unwanted players and rids Tottenham of their high-earning salaries.

Spurs also chasing some of Europe's brightest young talents

Levy and co have acted cleverly this transfer market, and are now widely reported to be chasing a deal for Club Brugge sensation Antonio Nusa.

Antonio Nusa in Norway training.

Spurs are currently locked in talks to sign Nusa, as per reliable transfer sources like Fabrizio Romano, as the Lilywhites make good on their policy of recruiting Europe's finest talents. Alasdair Gold, a Tottenham correspondent for football.london, has previously stated that they're aiming to replicate the successful transfers of Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr in this respect.

Both starlets have gone to become real success stories in north London, with Spurs attempting to sign Nusa and send him back to Brugge for the remainder of this campaign.

Tottenham set sights on Boris Mamzuah

According to German news outlet Bild, Tottenham have now set their sights on another rising star after Nusa. Indeed, it is believed Spurs are interested in signing Hertha Berlin youngster Boris Mamzuah, alongside a host of other top European sides like Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Ajax, RB Salzburg and La Liga champions Barcelona.

Hertha recently protected themselves by tying the midfielder down with a long-term deal, but the contract is thought to contain an affordable release clause of around £4 million.

While this fee would surely be no real obstacle for Levy, Spurs' real worry is the sheer amount of prestigious competition for Mamzuah's signature.

The German's manager, Pal Dardai, has already branded the teenager a "born footballer" and "one of the greatest talents of recent years".

Sky journalist drops "news" on Man Utd interest in Joshua Zirkzee

Manchester United twice led against Spurs at the weekend, and twice they were pegged back. Manager Erik ten Hag will nonetheless be pleased to signs of life from an attack that scored multiple goals for just the seventh time in 21 Premier League matches this season.

Even after an improved showing, United have still recorded the fewest goals (24) of any side in the league's top 13, and they have the poorest goal difference (-5) of any team in the top 11. £72m summer signing Rasmus Hojlund has only been able to find the net twice in 16 league outings so far, and United would be wise to recruit another striker who can take the pressure off him. Those efforts, it seems, are already underway.

United make contact over Zirkzee

According to Sky Sport Germany's Florian Plettenberg, United have enquired about Joshua Zirkzee at Bologna. Recruitment staff at Old Trafford have "a high opinion" of Zirkzee in light of what he's done this season, and they've listed him as a target for 2024.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

"Talks took place" over a possible deal, but the Red Devils learned that "Bologna won't let him go" during the winter window. Come the summer, however, it could be a different story, with a €40m release clause (the equivalent of about £34m) due to come into effect.

"Graceful" Zirkzee gives United clinical touch

Zirkzee joined Bayern's academy in 2017 and, after loans at Parma and Anderlecht, he resettled at Bologna in 2022. His first year was quiet – he only started five league games and scored two goals – but he's enjoying a breakout season in 2023/24. He's bagged seven goals and set-up two more, form that had seen him start every single league game prior to a yellow-card suspension last time out.

Compatriot Rafael van der Vaart says the "very graceful" Zirkzee is "not normal", and European football expert Alex Barker has warned that he'll be a "terrifying" proposition if he maximises his potential. Journalist Zach Lowy, meanwhile, reckons he'll be "one hell of a bargain" if he leaves for £34m.

The numbers illustrate why. As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old is among the most prolific forwards in Serie A this season, and he's reached seven goals from an xG of just 4.5, which points to the clinical touch that United sorely need.

Serie A's player of the month for both November and December, it seems like only a matter of time before he earns a call-up to the senior Dutch national side, and it's not too late for him to play his way into their squad for Euro 2024

United should be wary of his former club Bayern, who negotiated a 50% sell-on clause as part of the sale agreement with Bologna. That means they're able to buy him back for €20m, and they might see that as a smart business move, because they'd be able to sell him on again for a significant profit.
