Derby eye up Christian Walton move

Derby County are believed to be interested in signing Brighton goalkeeper Christian Walton this summer, as Wayne Rooney eyes up  some late additions.

The Lowdown: Key week at Pride Park

It has been an up-and-down start to the season for the Rams, with Rooney’s side picking up five points from their opening four Championship matches.

Derby have a week left to sign players, with next Tuesday’s deadline day edging closer all the time and the squad still desperately short of any real semblance of depth.

The Latest: Derby keen on Walton signing

According to Football Insider sources, the Rams are in the race to sign Walton in the coming days, seeing him as someone who could provide more quality competition within the squad.

The 25-year-old’s current deal runs out at the end of this season, meaning Brighton may be willing to let him leave this summer.

Derby are one of a number of clubs keen on acquiring Walton’s signature, with the likes of Norwich City and Nottingham Forest also in the mix.

The Verdict: Solid addition for Rams?

Walton may not necessarily be a big-name signing, but he could be someone who gives Rooney a strong extra option between the sticks.

He has made 156 appearances in the Football League, including 83 games in the Championship, proving his experience and suggesting that he would be a safe pair of hands.

Given Walton’s contract situation, Derby could also get a good deal for him, acting as a further positive if they wish to sell him on for profit in the future.

Liverpool: Fans react to Neco Williams update

Liverpool youngster Neco Williams is reportedly set to stay at Anfield for the 2021/22 season, despite previous claims that he could depart on loan this summer.

Williams has made 25 appearances for Liverpool’s first-team, which includes 14 from the 2020/21 season, in which the senior squad struggled with a number of injury problems.

Reports since emerged that Williams could leave the club in search of regular game time, but The Athletic now claim that the Welshman is set to remain at Anfield for the upcoming league campaign, which gets underway this weekend.

Speaking in an interview with Love Sport Radio (via TBR Football), former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland labelled Williams as ‘superb’ for his performances when called up, and it now looks as though he will have a chance to stay and prove the former Red right.

Plenty of Liverpool supporters took to social media to react to this reported update on Williams’ future with the club, with a number of fans being left frustrated.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from the Anfield Watch Twitter account, who shared the update, leading one fan to label the youngster as ‘overrated’:

Bresnan called up as Sidebottom ruled out

Tim Bresnan, the Yorkshire allrounder, has been called into England’s squad for their ODI against Scotland, at the Grange, on Monday to cover for injury problems to Ryan Sidebottom and Chris Tremlett.Sidebottom has a hip problem and hasn’t travelled to Edinburgh with the team and has been ruled out of the Twenty20 against South Africa, at Chester-le-Street, on Wednesday. He will undergo fitness tests at the National Academy in Loughborough with a view to his participation in the one-day series which starts at Headingley next Friday.Sidebottom has been struggling with injuries through the second half of the season. He missed the Headingley Test against South Africa with a back problem and didn’t look fit when he returned at Edgbaston before being left out at The Oval. However, England coach Peter Moores isn’t concerned about Sidebottom’s long-term fitness. “Physically he’s in a better shape than he was 12 months ago, but he has had a lot of workload and he’s bowled a lot of overs in the Test matches,” he told the . “We rested him for the last Test and it’s given him a bit more of a window to get fully recharged. He’s had a bit of groin pain and neck pain, which they are hopeful of getting cleared up so he is available for the next period to come.”Tremlett has a heel injury and although he has remained with the squad he is doubtful to face Scotland, which has earned Bresnan his recall.Bresnan played four ODIs and one Twenty20 international during 2006, but took just two wickets against Sri Lanka. However has impressed with a consistent county season. He has scored 442 runs in the Championship at 36.83 and taken 40 wickets at 26.42, while earlier in the season he took 18 wickets at 18.05 in the Friends Provident Trophy.England will also be without former one-day captain Paul Collingwood for the match against Scotland as he continues to serve the four-match ban he collected for a slow over-rate against New Zealand. Samit Patel, the Nottinghamshire allrounder, could be in line for a debut after hitting 60 for England Lions against the South Africans on Saturday.

Edwards on Newcastle transfer business

Luke Edwards has revealed what he has been told about Newcastle United’s transfer business in the summer window.

The Lowdown: No incomings

The St. James’ Park faithful currently remain the only club in the Premier League yet to make a signing this summer (Sky Sports).

They have been linked with moves for a few players recently, including the likes of Hamza Choudhury and Axel Tuanzebe.

The Latest: Edwards on transfers

Writing on his official Twitter page, The Daily Telegraph journalist Edwards has claimed that new players will be coming to the North East, despite progress remaining “slow”:

“Assured new players will definitely be arriving.”

The Verdict: Promising

It is certainly promising to hear that the Tyneside club will be bringing in some new faces before the window shuts.

However, with only a couple of weeks to go until the new 2021/22 Premier League season starts, they really need to get a move on, as every other team in and around them are strengthening.

Steve Bruce’s side will likely explore the possibility of signing Joe Willock from Arsenal again, whether that be on another loan deal or a permanent move, but nothing is a guarantee in the transfer market, and so the Magpies should really be acting now rather than later.

Nonetheless, the Toon Army will be praying Edwards is right about seeing some fresh faces, whether fan favourite Willock is one of them or not.

Everton interested in Samuel Chukwueze move

Everton’s transfer window has burst into life during the last 24 hours with Rafa Benitez finally getting to work in the market.

Andros Townsend has arrived on a free transfer to bolster their wide options while Asmir Begovic has signed as a back-up in the goalkeeping department. What’s the word? With Richarlison and James Rodriguez mooted as potential departures from Goodison Park this summer, Benitez needs to continue searching for offensive players in the window.Demarai Gray has been a name on their shortlist but another name has now come to the centre of their attention.According to The Athletic, Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze is interesting Everton. They suggest that the Toffees have ‘extensively assessed and have garnered positive feedback’ on the 22-year-old.However, they will hope to negotiate a lower fee than his buy-out clause of £55m.A player to set Everton on fireChukwueze’s numbers for goals and assists don’t point to an enormously productive player but judging by his talent and ability, he’d be a wonderful capture for Everton. The youngster has immense potential and showed against Arsenal in last season’s Europa League that he can dominate Premier League defences. He limped off injured in the second leg of the semi-final between the two teams but was a rampant threat in the first match.[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-everton-news-benitez-kamara-romero-dumfries” title= “Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]Chukwueze supplied the opener for Manu Trigueros while attempting nine dribbles and providing two key passes. He is a wily character who is capable of tormenting even the very best defenders. He recorded 2.4 dribbles per match in Europe last term, a number that usurps every player at Goodison.Described as “exciting” by ex-footballer Mutiu Adepoju, he’s also rapid. He’s been recorded at a speed of 34.58 km/h which would put him among the quickest players in Benitez’s side. For context, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been tracked at 35.1 km/h.With dribbling and speed as eye-catching as that, he could whip up a storm in offensive areas for Everton.Quotes from West Brom defender Semi Ajayi also put him in a particularly good light. He once said:“I’m on the B team [at Nigeria], not in the starting lineup, and Samuel Chukwueze is in my team and he destroyed the whole first team on his own, just give him the ball, he kept destroying them to the point the coach changed his mind, that he doesn’t think it’s three at the back, it won’t work.“These times, the pitch that we were on, one pitch in Asaba, the pitch is terrible, anyone that plays for Nigeria would tell you how bad the pitch is, you cannot dribble on it.“Chukwueze got the ball at his feet, dribbling around people as it’s nothing, like he’s playing at Old Trafford.”With 17 senior career goals to his name, he does need to improve in that department but that will come with time. At the moment, he is still an incredibly dangerous player.Supporters should relish a potential opportunity to see him in Merseyside next season.

Southampton fans rage at Jankewitz exit

Many Southampton fans are far from happy after it was confirmed by the Saints that Alexandre Jankewitz has left the club to join Young Boys.

The Saints did not have the best of times of it in the Premier League last term – after a strong start, they ended up dropping to 15th in the table. The low point was easily the 9-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, which actually turned out to be Jankewitz’s first start for the club (Transfermarkt). Not that it lasted long – he was sent off in the opening five minutes.

That turned out to be one of just three appearances he made for the Saints – it has been confirmed that he has moved to Young Boys in Switzerland (southamptonfc.com). For many Saints fans, this appears to be a mistake – Jankewitz is just 19 years old, is a regular for the Swiss under-19s and appears to have a big future ahead of him.

The news was shared on Twitter by Southampton’s official channel, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts over what one fan called a “ridiculous decision” by the Saints.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about Jankewitz leaving

Phoenix given lift as Dynamos fail to fire

Things are heating up in Division One of the Norwich Union League after Yorkshire Phoenix beat Durham Dynamos by 28 runs in the day/night clash at Headingley.

Farid Bakri05-Aug-2002Things are heating up in Division One of the Norwich Union League after Yorkshire Phoenix beat Durham Dynamos by 28 runs in the day/night clash at Headingley.Having won the toss the home side elected to bat, but lost Matthew Wood (5) and Chris Silverwood (1) with only 30 on the board. Vic Craven (59) and Gary Fellows (50) overcame this setback to play masterfully and solidly, giving Phoenix the platform they needed to secure their third victory in as many days. The former produced a fireworks display with five well-timed fours and two beautifully struck sixes, whilst Fellows’ running between the wickets was energetic as their side reached 222. Neil Killeen took three for 42 and Paul Collingwood three for 29 in an untidy bowling display which conceded 19 wides. The visitors got off to a shambolic start in reply. Silverwood (three for 15) made amends for his early dismissal with three crisp wickets to help reduce the visitors to 19 for four. He trapped Michael Gough lbw for four, and had Danny Law caught by Wood for a duck before bowling England man Paul Collingwood for three. Tim Bresnan bagged the other wicket when he sent Nicky Peng back to the pavilion before he could make a start.Gary Pratt (84) and Andrew Pratt (59) then put on 88 for the sixth wicket as they tried to restore order. The older Pratt continued to work hard for his runs, finding the boundary only five times, but in the end his efforts were in vain as Fellows’ precision bowling undid the Durham tail-end. Yorkshire climb into third place after their latest win, and go level with Warwickshire with a game in hand. The Division Two encounter between Sussex Sharks and Gloucestershire Gladiators survived ten balls before persistent rain forced the match to be abandoned. Both sides get two points each and Sussex remain at the bottom of the table.

Newcastle linked with Mario Lemina

Newcastle United are in discussions with Southampton over a potential swap deal involving midfielders Isaac Hayden and Mario Lemina.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are set to demand around £12 million for Hayden while the Saints value Lemina at £4m, due to the Gabon international only having one year remaining on his contract.

The report also claims that French outfit Nice are interested in acquiring Lemina’s signature, meaning Bruce may have to move quickly in order to secure his man.

Fans will be gutted

News of Hayden’s potential departure from St. James’ Park may come as a shock to the club’s supporters, given he signed a new six-year contract just 12 months ago.

Despite initially struggling to settle in the North East of England, the 26-year-old has endeared himself to the Newcastle faithful over the last couple of campaigns, and the fans will surely be gutted to hear this latest revelation.

His importance to Steve Bruce’s side was clear for all to see throughout 2020/21 as the Arsenal academy graduate provided a solid base in midfield from which to build on.

As per WhoScored, Hayden recorded 2.2 tackles per league game last term and made 1.8 interceptions, outperforming his teammates on both metrics, highlighting his importance to this Newcastle side.

While Lemina is undoubtedly a talented player, swapping him for Hayden appears to be a significant mistake by Bruce.

The dynamic midfielder matched the Newcastle man’s 2.2 tackles last season, but managed just 1.1 interceptions and was ultimately unable to prevent Fulham from returning to the Championship.

Therefore, it’s a transfer that makes little sense for the St. James’ Park outfit.

On Sunday, Hayden posted on Instagram: “5 Years today defending the @nufc badge. What a journey it’s been, wouldn’t have changed it for the world. Looking forward to the season ahead. #NUFC” indicating he’s happy on Tyneside, and not the driving force behind this potential deal.

After a strong end to 2020/21, Newcastle fans would have been hoping to see their side strengthened over the summer, building on the momentum Bruce’s charges created. However, selling Hayden would risk losing that feeling, and Bruce needs to think carefully before proceeding with this deal.
