McKay puts Wellington on top

A summary of the second round of matches in New Zealand’s domestic one-day competition

Cricinfo staff17-Dec-2009Wellington have moved to the top of the points table after a comfortable six-wicket win over Central Districts at Basin Reserve. Left-arm fast bowler Andy McKay bagged four wickets, and was backed up by the rest of the bowling attack, as Wellington restricted Central Districts to 217. The score could have been much worse had it not been for Brendon Diamanti’s 68 at No.9 but his effort was in vain. Wellington faced little difficulty in scaling down the target, as James Franklin stroked an unbeaten 84 with support from Chris Nevin and Steven Rhodes to seal victory with almost six overs to spare.Powered by a strong middle-order performance, Auckland eased to a comfortable 37-run victory against Otago at Colin Maiden Park. After electing to bat, the home team lost the wickets of Richard Jones and Anaru Kitchen cheaply. Reece Young and Ravi Bopara then steadied the ship before Young was dismissed for 40. Gareth Hopkins took over the reins with a free-scoring 70, and in combination with Bopara who made 89, set Auckland on course for a sizeable score. Otago’s innings began in similar fashion with two early wickets preceding a repair job, this time through Shaun Haig and Craig Cumming. Haig top scored with 81 but the rest of middle order could not sustain the effort. Auckland’s bowlers shared the spoils as Otago were bowled out in the 48th over.Canterbury recorded their first win of the competition, overcoming Northern Districts by 42 runs at Seddon Park. Shanan Stewart smashed six fours and six sixes in his 80-ball 97 to take Canterbury to a formidable 296 for 7. Canterbury were boosted by contributions of 85 from Rob Nicol and a quickfire 46 from Kruger van Wyk. In response, ND looked good to trump Canterbury after openers BJ Watling (63) and Michael Parlane (80) added 143 for the opening wicket. But a middle-order slide and a five-wicket haul from Corey Anderson marked Canterbury’s comeback and took them to victory despite a belated lower-order recovery.

Southampton must let go of Sam McQueen

Southampton currently have a number of senior players in their squad who will see their contracts expire in the summer such as Fraser Forster, Jack Stephens and Shane Long among others.

However, the Saints also have one player in their squad that has a contract set to expire at the end of January – 26-year-old left-back Sam McQueen.

As a product of Southampton’s youth academy, McQueen played his way through the ranks at the club before making his senior debut back in February 2014 in a FA Cup match against Sunderland.

Since then, the defender, who is currently valued at £720k according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of just 29 senior appearances for the club across all competitions.

McQueen has not featured for the Saints since the 2017/18 season where he made seven appearances in the Premier League and one in the Carabao Cup, making him somewhat of a forgotten figure in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad.

In fairness to the player, McQueen suffered a cruciate ligament rupture back in October 2018 and is still recovering from it, highlighting just how serious the injury was and still is given how long he’s been out of action.

Back in April, Hasenhuttl, unfortunately, claimed that it would be a miracle if McQueen ever played football again, showing the severity of the injury and how unsuccessful his recovery has been.

However, in July, The Athletic reported that Southampton gave McQueen a six-month contract that is set to expire in January to see if he can impress Hasenhuttl after being involved in first-team group training sessions in pre-season.

McQueen, who was reportedly earning a weekly wage of £18k-per-week last season according to Spotrac, hasn’t made a senior appearance for the Saints this season and with the club now possessing Romain Perraud, it doesn’t look good for the defender’s chances of getting back into the team by January. Combine that with the fact Kyle Walker-Peters has played in that role too and the future does isn’t bright at St Mary’s.

With this in mind, if the full-back can fully recover by then, we feel it would be the best option for all parties if Southampton didn’t offer McQueen a new deal in January and instead moved him on to a club that would be willing to give him a chance to get his career back on track.

After all, it’s the least he deserves after such a rotten few years on the south coast.

Playing as a batsman a bigger challenge – Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene now wants to push himself “to the limit” as a batsman

Ajay S Shankar30-Jun-2009Mahela Jayawardene has said Sri Lanka’s home series against Pakistan from Saturday will be a bigger challenge for him after giving up the team’s captaincy early this year because he now wants to push himself “to the limit” as a batsman. Jayawardene has discussed his new role with Kumar Sangakkara, his successor, and will focus on holding Sri Lanka’s batting together and improve its disappointing home record against Pakistan. The former Sri Lanka captain admitted that leading a subcontinent team, with all the passion involved, was not an easy job and hoped to emulate the manner in which Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid have managed the transition after giving up the captain’s role to contribute better as batsmen for India.”I always knew that everything [captaincy] was going to be over some day,” Jayawardene told Cricinfo. “For me, cricket is all about enjoyment and trying to do my best. I am sure I still have that hunger to do well and be a better cricketer than I am right now. In that perspective, it is a much bigger challenge for me, to push myself to the limit.”Jayawardene’s last Test as captain was also against Pakistan in March but that series was cut short by the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore. This time, he said, he was confident of easing into his new role for the home series, which starts on July 4. “When I captained the side, I made sure I had two different roles, as a captain and as a batsman. Now the captaincy has gone to somebody else but the batting role is going to be the same. My focus, my concentration, everything will be on that. So that’s not going to change because I am not the captain any more.”Jayawardene, who captained Sri Lanka from 2006, said Sangakkara, a close friend, understands and agrees with his views on how he should be contributing to the team. “Sanga just asked me to be the batsman that I am and probably be better than what I am right now. That’s what I want to be as well, and Sanga understands that. I enjoyed working with him when he was my deputy and now it is my duty to try and help him out in any way that I can to make his job easier.”We have already had lots of discussions about combinations, compositions and different things like tactics. I just give him different inputs and then it’s easier for him to play around with those. As for my role in the team, it is important for me to be the middle order batsman who will hold things together, and I just want to continue to do that.”Jayawardene has notched up four centuries, including a double against Pakistan in Karachi in February, in nine Tests over the last 12 months, scoring 773 runs at 70.27. His one-day batting dipped, however, during the same period and he scored just four fifties in 24 matches at 21.72, including three consecutive ducks against Zimbabwe and another against Bangladesh. On reflection, he said, he empathises with Tendulkar and Dravid who had also decided that captaincy was getting in the way of their batting. “It’s not an easy job, especially when you are captaining a sub-continent team. There are a lot of responsibilities, a lot of hope and joy because everyone is cricket-crazy. That’s something you get into when you get to be the captain. So you try and do your best and then leave it and go back and concentrate on your own performance and try and help the team in a different way. I have seen the way Sachin and Rahul have gone about things and it has been amazing. Hopefully, like them, I can do the job.”

It’s not an easy job, especially when you are captaining a sub-continent team. There are a lot of responsibilities, a lot of hope and joy because everyone is cricket-crazyJayawardene on captaincy

Jayawardene also revealed that he had a “light discussion” with Dravid on the issue when they met during the IPL in South Africa. “Rahul called me ‘skip’ and I said I am no longer that. We had a quiet joke about it during the IPL, [talking] about the captaincy and how much of a difference it makes when you leave it and come back into the team as a batsman. It’s all about prioritising your responsibilities; then the job becomes much easier.”It also helped, he said, that Sangakkara had emerged as a “capable” leader. “I knew I was leaving it to somebody capable of handling that pressure and of becoming a great captain for our country. I had no doubt in my mind about that.”The next step, Jayawardene said, was to work with Sangakkara and rectify their home record against the current visitors. Pakistan possess an overwhelming record in Sri Lanka, having lost just one Test to the hosts in 12 meetings since 1986. In fact, Pakistan have claimed three series wins out of five in Sri Lanka, including a 1-0 win in their previous meeting in 2006. This time, they are scheduled to play three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 international.”We have always been very competitive, Pakistan and Sri Lanka,” Jayawardene said. “But our record against Pakistan is not that great. That’s something we need to improve on and that is added motivation for us. We need to make sure that we get it right because not many teams have beaten us at home but Pakistan have done that quite a bit. So that’s something we want to rectify.”Muthiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis will play a key role in the series, Jayawardene felt, and they will be helped by Lasith Maliga and a clutch of new fast bowlers. But he admitted that his own role will be under the scanner, too. “For me, from the first day that I played for my country, there has been pressure to do well. That’s always going to be there.”

Corinthians vence batalha judicial e consegue alvará do Parque São Jorge

Multi Screen Media and World Sport Group have signed on as the official broadcast partners for the IPL. The nine-year deal, that runs through till 2017, is worth Rs 8,200 crore. The new agreement, which is more than double the earlier deal signed last year for 10 years with the same two parties, gives Multi Screen Media the exclusive audio visual rights (in India) to all the 59 matches of the second edition of the IPL.The development comes after the Bombay High Court had cleared the way for the BCCI to seek a new broadcast deal by rejecting a plea from Sony TV, which had challenged the Indian cricket board’s decision to terminate its five-year deal to televise the IPL. Talks had failed because MSM, which holds the IPL contract under the Sony umbrella, wanted a non-terminable contract, which the BCCI/IPL refused to provide.Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, was “absolutely delighted” with the new deal. “We have what we believe to be the best deal for the DLF Indian Premier League and Indian cricket fans alike,” Modi said. “I am certain that Multi Screen Media will pull out all the stops in ensuring that the best technology is utilized to deliver excellent content that is creative, innovative and enriching for the cricket fans in India and indeed across the globe.”The IPL’s relationship with Sony had turned rocky last month after the IPL lost out on a US$31.16 million deal because of a dispute between Sony and Big TV, a direct-to-home provider. Ties between the two dipped further after the subsequent resignation of Kunal Dasgupta, the then Sony CEO, who was known to be close to Modi. Sony is also understood to have been keen on re-negotiating the financial terms of its contract with the IPL and had concerns about the tournament’s revised dates and some of the venues that were being considered.Manjit Singh, the MSM CEO, said the deal helped reaffirm the broadcaster’s commitment to the Indian subcontinent and the global cricket fan alike. “We are absolutely delighted to bring the exciting IPL line-up of Indian and international cricketers to the millions of cricket fans globally,” he said. “At Multi Screen Media & World Sport Group we have done some pioneering work in showcasing cricket in an entertaining and informative way and we will continue to innovate and extend the excitement of cricket through the IPL. We look forward to a long and successful association with the IPL as the leagues global media rights partner.”Venu Nair, CEO, WSG said the objective was to place Indian cricket on the global sports calendar. “It’s a task, that we have managed with great distinction,” Nair said. “Today, fans across the world are looking forward to the start of season 2 of the IPL and we are happy to partner with Multi Screen Media to bring the league to a global audience.”With the tournament moving away from India, there is likely to be a significant international audience now. All matches will be telecast at 4 pm IST and at 8 pm IST in the evening to coincide with prime time for television audiences in India.

Ex drops behind-the-scenes West Ham claim

An exciting behind-the-scenes claim has emerged over West Ham’s summer signing Kurt Zouma this week…

What’s the word?

According to ever-reliable Irons insider ExWHUemployee, the centre-back has slotted in seamlessly since his £29.8m move from Chelsea last month and has already become a hit with his teammates in training.

Speaking on this week’s episode of ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast, he said:

“Zouma was superb [against Manchester United]. Honestly, I thought that was such a good performance from him and it really excites me how well he played – 26 years of age, French international, Champions League and [Premier] League winner.

“I thought he’s settled in really well. I’ve asked around a little bit to see what the new guys are like and all of them seem to be quite popular, but he’s the one that everyone says, ‘oh what a lad, he’s so funny, he’s a top bloke’, so I think he’s got the right personality for the team.

“I just thought he was brilliant. I thought he was everywhere in the air, intercepting, strong. Bearing in mind he was playing against [Cristiano] Ronaldo, I thought he was brilliant.”

Huge impact already

This is the sort of thing that both manager David Moyes and the Hammers faithful will absolutely love hearing as it bodes well for the team’s chemistry and the Frenchman’s ability to fit right in despite a major change in his career.

Such a claim is surely echoed by Zouma’s own recent comments.

“I’m settling in very well,” the 26-year-old told West Ham’s official website.  “I’ve met some top guys here, top players too and I feel like I’ve been here for many years already.”

It certainly puts to bed one rumour that suggested some of Moyes’ squad were upset by the £120k-per-week wages the new signing received.

According to The Sun (via the Daily Mail), Zouma’s salary ‘has not gone down particularly well with his new team-mates’, who have become a ‘tight-knit’ group under the Scotsman.

Ex’s latest claim would say otherwise and that’ll surely leave many around the London Stadium delighted.

The Irons may have been defeated 2-1 by the Red Devils, who had last season’s loan star Jesse Lingard bag a late, and bitter, winner but Zouma did excel on his Premier League debut for the club.

He rated among their best performers (7.1) and also recorded a game-high 12 clearances, two interceptions and one tackle, via SofaScore. His experience and quality will be a major asset for the east Londoners throughout the season and already, he looks to have been an ideal addition.

The £28.8m-rated colossus may soon become a fan-favourite at the Hammers.

AND in other news, Moyes has played a blinder over “unplayable” West Ham gem, his value has increased 50%…

Rangers: Ianis Hagi fit to face Livingston

Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has revealed that Ianis Hagi is in contention to face Livingston tonight after returning from a viral infection.

What’s the latest?

The winger has been ruled out since the last international break, but McAllister has confirmed that the 22-year-old has looked sharp in training, whilst giving an overall injury update.

He told the Glasgow Times: “Ianis is back and trained, he looked pretty sharp. Ryan Kent will be missing. Patterson has had an ankle issue recently but he trained and looked sharp today.

“Ryan Jack is still missing and working hard to get back to full fitness.”

Fans will be buzzing

Rangers fans will be buzzing with this update as it suggests that Hagi could be in with a shot at starting, or at least featuring, against Livingston tonight. His last appearance for the club came at the end of August in a 4-2 win over Ross County, with supporters potentially excited to see him back in action after a month out.

The Romania international has two goals and one assist in six competitive appearances this term, having managed seven goals and 11 assists in the Premiership last season. This shows that he has the quality to score and set up goals on a regular basis, which could provide Rangers with the spark they have been missing of late.

His manager Steven Gerrard, who previously dubbed Hagi an “outstanding talent”, has seen his side score just once in their last two outings. This suggests that they have been lacking in the final third, which is where the 22-year-old could come in and solve a glaring problem for the Gers. He has proven that he can contribute in key moments since the start of last season and could provide that quality now that he has returned to fitness.

Fans will surely be buzzing to see the mercurial gem back in the starting XI and gaining some valuable minutes against Livingston in the League Cup. That could then allow him to get fully match-fit ahead of a return to Premiership action at the weekend against Dundee.

AND in other news, Gerrard must unleash £14k-p/w Rangers powerhouse tomorrow, he’s a brick wall…

North ZoneAshish Nehra took a hat-trick which sent Punjab crashing from 21 for 1 to 21 for 4, a position from which they never recovered against Delhi in Dharamsala. Nehra had begun his spell by bowling Sunny Sohal off the first ball of the match and returned to strike thrice in the seventh over. He had Ravi Inder Singh caught by Shikhar Dhawan, trapped Pankaj Dharmani lbw, and had Ankur Kakkar caught behind. Despite Uday Kaul’s 107, Punjab could only reach 202, a target which Delhi overhauled in the 39th over. Virat Kohli starred in Delhi’s chase, smashing 119 off 110 balls while Rajat Bhatia contributed 53.Yashpal Singh scored an unbeaten century to ensure that Services clinched a thriller off the last ball against Jammu and Kashmir at Una. Chasing 232 for victory, Services had slumped to 14 for 4 before they were rescued by a fourth-wicket partnership of 157 between Yashpal and Sarabjit Singh. Sarabjit contributed 61 to the stand before he was bowled by Ahmed Nizam but Yashpal remained firm and added 59 with Abhimanyu Singh to secure victory. Earlier Ian Dev Singh and Parvez Rassol had scored 81 and 59 respectively to get J&K off to a steady start, reaching 147 in the 36th over. However, they lost their way thereafter and lost eight wickets for 84 runs to finish with 231 for 9 when they looked like getting much more at one stage. Narender Singh took 4 for 32 for Services while Digamber Attri picked up 3 for 44.A strong all-round performance from Himachal Pradesh helped secure a seven-wicket win against Haryana in Una. Rahul Dewan and Dhruv Singh scored half-centuries for Haryana but they were restricted to 201 by Vishal Bhatia and Mukesh Sharma, who took three wickets apiece. Sangram Singh led Himachal’s strong reply, scoring 80 off 93 balls with three sixes. He steered his team to 126 before he became Amit Mishra’s second wicket. Paras Dogra and Vinit Indulkar added an unbeaten 76 for the fourth wicket to complete Himachal’s victory.East ZoneAn unbeaten century from wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha steered Bengal to an eight-wicket win against Assam at Eden Gardens. Chasing 270 to win, Bengal openers, Saha and Abhishek Banerjee, added 98 for the first wicket, a partnership which was dominated by Abhishek who scored 68 off 71 balls before he was trapped lbw by offspinner Arnald Konwar. Sourav Ganguly ensured that Kolkata didn’t lose momentum after the wicket, scoring a quick 64 in a 136-run stand with Saha for the second wicket. Ganguly too fell to Konwar but Saha remained not out on 102 as the winning runs were scored in the 46th over.Earlier, Assam opener Sibsankar Roy had also scored a century – 111 off 120 balls – to lead his team to 269 for 8. He didn’t get much support from the top order and Assam stumbled to 92 for 4 before Roy and Deepak Sharma, who scored 79 off 74 balls, added 147 for the fifth wicket.A weak batting performance from Tripura allowed Orissa to complete an easy run-chase with seven wickets and 97 balls to spare at the Jadhavpur University Complex in Kolkata. Having won the toss, Orissa struck early, reducing Tripura to 35 for 2 before a second wicket partnership of 67 between Sourav Dubey and Nishit Shetty offered some resistance. Their partnership was broken when Dubey was run out and thereafter Orissa struck regularly to dismiss Tripura for 179 in 44 overs. Orissa’s openers Natraj Behera and SS Das, who top scored with 73, provided their team with a solid start and laid the foundation for an easy run-chase.Central ZoneSanjay Bangar was agonisingly stranded one run short of his century as his team, Railways, crushed Vidarbha by eight wickets in Indore. Chasing 191, Bangar scored 99 not out off only 110 balls and received solid support from opener V Cheluvaraj and No.3 Dhiraj Salvi, who contributed 48 to the run-chase. Earlier medium-pacer Anureet Singh and left-arm spinner Murali Kartik had taken three wickets a apiece to cripple Vidarbha’s innings. Anureet took three top-order wickets to help reduce Vidarbha to 37 for 5, and Kartik broke the resistance offered by half-centurion Ranjit Paradkar and claimed two more lower-order wickets to restrict them to 190 for 9.A strong performance from Uttar Pradesh’s spinners, Praveen Gupta and Piyush Chawla, set up a comfortable seven-wicket win against Madhya Pradesh in Indore. Chawla took 4 for 36 and combined with Gupta, who picked up 3 for 23, to run through MP’s middle and lower order. Faced with a target of 152, UP captain Mohammad Kaif scored an unbeaten 51 to lead his team to victory in the 39th over.
