Chelsea: Neymar and Willian convinced Thiago Silva to sign for Blues

Chelsea are currently head and shoulders above all of their Premier League rivals in the current transfer window.

The Blues mean serious business going into the new season as they currently boast a mammoth six new senior signings. They arguably have four marquee recruits after splashing the cash on the likes of Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz.

Their fourth major signing comes in the form of Brazilian icon Thiago Silva, who left Paris Saint-Germain on a free contract in search of pastures new.

A recent report from The Telegraph has brought to light some of the behind-the-scenes work that went into the 35-year-old’s move to Stamford Bridge.

Brazil and former PSG teammate Neymar reportedly nudged Silva in the direction of Chelsea after warning him that he would regret not taking up the offer. The £115.2m-valued forward was one of the players from whom the Brazilian sought advice before deciding on the move to Frank Lampard’s side.

Silva has played in both the French and Italian top tiers but the chance of joining a Premier League side is a huge opportunity. Similarly to Neymar, former Blues player Willian also encouraged the veteran to pursue the move to west London.

Silva signed a two-year deal with Chelsea and could even see his career out under Lampard. He could well be the focal point of the Englishman’s defence this season as the Blues look to challenge in the Premier League title race.

Alasdair Gold tips Ryan Sessegnon to make Spurs breakthrough

According to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold, Ryan Sessegnon could make a breakthrough into the first-team at Tottenham before the end of this season.

What did he say?

The England youth international has had a rocky start to his career at Spurs, with various injury problems restricting him to just 12 appearances across all competitions – in total, he has only played 341 minutes of Premier League football.

Whilst Sessegnon has been a peripheral figure this season, Gold has insisted that Lilywhites boss Jose Mourinho remains a big fan of the former Fulham ace, and that should their chances of finishing in the top five go, he could be one of the main beneficiaries.

He said: “Mourinho likes him and wanted him at United. For now it’s about building him up & working on his defensive skills. Mourinho told me he sees him as a terrific future left-back, with similar traits to Ashley Cole, but he’s not ready yet. It’s telling that he looks to have bulked up during lockdown which will aid his development. I’d be surprised if he’s loaned out a year after being bought for £30m.

“Same with (Oliver) Skipp, I think if top 5 chances go then you’ll see a lot of the younger players given chances to stake their claim for a more regular spot. He’s had a tough season with injury and he’s still got a lot of work to do. He’s got such a high ceiling though.”

Opportunity

After drawing against Manchester United and beating West Ham, Spurs are firmly in the race for Champions League football next season. With Manchester City’s place in the competition under threat, a fifth-placed finish may well be enough this season, and currently, Mourinho’s side lie just four points behind that spot.

Is it Mido or Pedro Mendes? This Spurs quiz will separate the loyal from the fake…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

If the Lilywhites somehow collapse over these coming games, then Sessegnon may well be given the chance to shine towards the last couple of weeks of the campaign. But with there being so much to play for, it’s difficult to see how Mourinho would be confident enough in throwing a young starlet who has barely played into the deep end.

Sessegnon’s time is likely to come next season rather than this as Gold suggests.

Tottenham Hotspur: Paul Robinson insists wonderkid should stay at Spurs

Paul Robinson has urged Troy Parrott to stay at Tottenham Hotspur and learn from fellow striker Harry Kane, in an exclusive with Football Insider.

After arriving at Spurs from Belvedere FC for an undisclosed fee in July 2017, Parrott is spending his second season with the Lilywhites. He has bagged 6 goals and produced 1 assist in just 4 games in the UEFA Youth League, but despite injuries to both Kane and Son Heung-min, the teenager is yet to make a start all season.

In fact, Jose Mourinho’s side have been playing without a recognised striker since February.

However, Robinson stressed the 18-year-old should remain in London to capitalise on any opportunities that may come his way throughout the course of next season.

Speaking to Dylan Childs, the veteran goalkeeper said: “If the club thinks sending him out on loan will benefit him, he would certainly command a loan to a Premier League side or a top Championship side.

“At Spurs, there is the potential for him to play cup games. Being in and around the squad he can learn from Harry Kane.  Subconsciously you pick up all of his traits, his habits, and his finishing if you work with him in training. You mould yourself without even knowing it.

“It is important to get football but with injuries and suspensions, he might get two or three games and score a bagful. We saw it with Rashford. Football is all about timing. If he is out on loan they cannot recall him.”

All things considered, it is difficult to disagree with the former England international here.

Understandably, given his track record, lots of supporters have been begging for Parrott to get the chance to prove himself, and crowds all around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium rose to their feet when he came on in extra-time in the FA Cup fifth-round defeat to Norwich City. Although the youngster didn’t lack the courage to take a spot-kick in the penalty shootout, sadly his attempt on goal was saved (BBC).

It is fair to say his teammate Harry Kane is quite a dead-ball-specialist, having buried 37 penalties and only missed 7 in all competitions in his career so far.

While it would be easy to ship the starlet out to a lower league, if Parrott does stay in the English capital, not only will he be able to pick up finishing tips and tricks from the England captain during first-team training, he will become more ingrained with the Tottenham backroom staff and therefore develop a greater understanding of Mourinho’s methodology.

In contrast, he would potentially have to start all over again once he returned to his parent club after a loan spell with another side.

The Irishman signed a new contract earlier this year, and it remains to be seen whether or not he will heed Robinson’s advice, or head out on loan in the coming months.

Michael Obafemi – Profile

Name: Michael Obafemi

Club: Southampton

Date of Birth: 6 July 2000

Position: Centre-forward/Winger (Right)/Second-striker

Michael Obafemi – his career so far

Michael Obafemi is now already a fully-fledged senior team member at Southampton and given his pedigree and success at youth level, that statement doesn’t really come as a big surprise at this point. But the Irish centre-forward is not exactly a product of the Saints’ academy but has had quite a colourful path towards it.

Before joining Southampton’s own development squads, Obafemi spent some time in revered academies at Chelsea, Arsenal and even Watford as he progressed through the ranks, impressing the right people and turning some heads along the way as well. Still, he would have one more stop after all those spells before he could join his current team.

The now 19-year-old talent played for Leyton Orient for a while before he was scouted and scooped up by the Saints in the summer of 2016, first joining up their U18 squad in the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup during the 2016/17 campaign.

But he was quick to impress his new club as well and the following season brought more success his way with Obafemi splitting his time between the U18 and U23 squads and even getting his first senior team exposure as well.

As a whole, however, the now 19-year-old centre-forward would tally a total of 32 appearances for Southampton’s U18s, scoring 15 goals and assisting further two and then recording 21 appearances for the U23s with eight goals and five assists under his belt in the process as well.

Needless to say, his stay in the academy and the development squads was quite successful and was rewarded with his professional debut as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in January 2018, aged just 17 years and 199 days.

Since then, he’s made a total of 27 senior team appearances, scoring four goals and assisting two on the side as well. Interestingly enough, his first goal meant he would become the club’s youngest scorer in the Premier League to date, at 18 years and 169 days old.

Even though he’s already reached the heights of the first-team squad, there is more to come from this talented young centre-forward.

Transfer latest

At the moment, there don’t seem to be any transfer rumours or transfer news surrounding Obafemi and the young player is likely to stay at Southampton at least for the time being. Seeing how his contract is still valid until 2022, the 19-year-old could be looking to impress even further once football finally resumes.

Of course, with the summer transfer window rapidly approaching, no one is really exempt from transfer rumours but so far, it’s been quiet on that front in regards to Southampton news on possible exits from the club.

But that should be a blessing for the Saints since Obafemi certainly has a lot more to offer in the near future and they should do what they can to ensure he stays at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Player profile

Obafemi is clearly far from a finished product but he’s been showing glimpses of his brilliance throughout the stay at Southampton. The youngster’s natural fitness is certainly what immediately catches the eye and his raw pace, agility and strength are definitely one of the highlights of his player profile.

Despite not having a very big frame, the Irish striker has the power to engage and win duels but will mostly use his acceleration to blaze past defenders and get into favourable positions. While he also has a great mentality, the technical side of his player profile could still be improved.

He is decent on the ball but is still far away from a modern striker who regularly links up with his teammates and supports the build-up phase of their attack. But seeing how he’s only 19, there is still time for him to polish some of the traits and keep progressing even further.

Jadon Sancho completely anonymous as Borussia Dortmund pegged back by PSV Eindhoven following penalty controversy in Champions League last-16 first leg

Jadon Sancho had a forgetful outing in the Netherlands as PSV Eindhoven got lucky with a controversial penalty call to hold the visitors to a draw.

Dortmund forced to share the spoils with PSVAnother lacklustre evening for SanchoMalen stole the show with his pace and skillGetty ImagesTELL ME MORE

It was another frustrating night for Sancho who huffed and puffed on the left and sometimes through the middle but could hardly create anything substantial. On the other hand, Donyell Malen was in inspired form on his return to the Phillips Stadion as he was the livewire for the Black and Yellows. It was not surprising when he popped up with the opener for the visitors. The 25-year-old danced past a couple of defenders after he was set up by Marcel Sabitzer and then rifled a shot at goal from a tight angle. Although the strike did take a deflection it had enough power to beat keeper Walter Benitez and bounce in off the underside of the crossbar.

It was only after falling behind that PSV started finding some purpose in midfield and gradually started asking questions of Dortmund's defence. Hirving Lozano looked like a threat on the left wing as the Mexican tried creating something from nothing to set up his teammates Ismail Saibari, Johan Bakayoko and Luuk De Jong. However, it was not until a stroke of luck that came their way they got back into the match. It looked like a good block from Matts Hummels on Malik Tillman as he got a sizeable portion of the ball after he slid in leading with his studs. However, the USMNT man hit the ground which led the Serbian referee Srdjan Jovanovic to point to the spot. And De Jong did the rest from 12 yards out.

As the game wore on, Dortmund offered very little going forward and it was a subdued second half from the visitors, which allowed PSV to take confidence from the match before travelling to Germany in March.

Malen's goal marked the end of an eight-year drought for Dutch players scoring against teams from their homeland in the UEFA Champions League. The last player to accomplish this feat was Arjen Robben, who scored for Bayern Munich against the same opponent.

Getty ImagesTHE MVP

Malen was undoubtedly the best player on the pitch. His mazy runs on the wide areas proved to be a constant threat for PSV defenders. He was not afraid to test the keeper from distance on a couple of occasions and if his attempts had a bit more fizz in them, Dortmund would have taken a lead back to Germany. Nonetheless, it was a very well-taken goal in the first half, which was his first strike in the competition since December 7, 2021, against Besiktas.

THE BIG LOSER

Sancho was an anonymous figure for Dortmund and his performance was reminiscent of his struggles at Manchester United. He lacked imagination and creativity which forced Edin Terzic to replace him in the 68th minute with Marius Wolf.

Thomas Tuchel, Brendan Rodgers and the 'Big Six' managers who didn't last 10 matches at the start of a season

Being a football manager at any level is a precarious occupation, and the Premier League is the most intense pressure cooker of all.

Life as a Premier League manager is tough, particularly when filling the dugout of an ambitious outfit that expects to be challenging at the business end of the division while also chasing down major honours.

Securing silverware is not enough for some, with short memories ensuring that nobody is ever more than a few games away from the Job Centre.

Some notable names have found that out to their cost down the years, with the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham giving coaches little time at the start of any given season in which to prove their worth.

Thomas Tuchel has become the latest to face the chop, with GOAL on hand to cast an eye over some of the earliest managerial changes that have been implemented by members of the so-called ‘Big Six’.

    Juande Ramos | Tottenham | 2008-09 | Eight games

It was quite impressive that Juande Ramos managed to get Tottenham into the position they were in by October 2008.

After just eight Premier League matches, Spurs were firmly rooted to the bottom of the table with only two points – earned via draws with Chelsea and Wigan Athletic. Although Spurs weren't getting blown away in games – they lost by more than one goal just once during this spell – it was clear that something had to change.

Martin Jol came in to replace Ramos and went on a five-match unbeaten run that included four wins, eventually guiding Spurs to an eighth-placed finish.

    Brendan Rodgers | Liverpool | 2015-16 | Eight games

Brendan Rodgers had a net spend of over £70m in the three transfer windows that followed Liverpool's agonising second-place finish in 2014.

And what did the Reds have to show for it after eight games of the 2015-16 campaign? 12 points, that's what. This might have been acceptable had the club been showing the green shoots of a recovery, but a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby proved to be the final straw.

Rodgers was sacked in October 2015 and swiftly replaced by a certain Jurgen Klopp, who has since transformed Liverpool back into an elite force on domestic and European fronts.

    Glenn Hoddle | Tottenham | 2003-04 | Six games

He may have been a club legend from his playing days, but that was not enough to keep Glenn Hoddle’s neck from the chopping block once the going got tough in north London.

The former England manager was relieved of his duties at White Hart Lane by the end of September in the 2003-04 campaign, with only four points taken from six Premier League fixtures.

Spurs came unstuck against Birmingham City, Fulham and Chelsea before seeing their manager moved on after going down 3-1 at home to Southampton.

David Pleat stepped in as caretaker coach, but only managed to lift a sleeping giant as high as 14th in the table.

    Thomas Tuchel | Chelsea | 2022-23 | Six games

On May 29, 2021, Thomas Tuchel got his hands on the Champions League trophy following Chelsea’s narrow 1-0 victory over domestic rivals Manchester City at Estadio do Dragao in Porto.

By September 7, 2022, fortune had reversed so dramatically for the German tactician that was handed a P45 at Stamford Bridge.

Eyebrows were raised when the axe fell in west London but, given the Blues’ penchant for change in the dugout, such drastic action was not all that surprising.

Former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss Tuchel was moved on after picking up 10 points from six games in the Premier League and suffering a 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in an opening European encounter of the 2022-23 campaign.
