  • Portugal star 'happy to be back'
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Felix has returned to Chelsea for a second spell with the Blues after spending time on loan with the Premier League side during the 2022-23 season. The Portugal international has arrived on a six-year deal, with the option for one more, and a fee thought to be in the region of £45.5 million (€53m/$59m). Felix has said he is happy to be "home" and has vowed his best years are still to come.

  • WHAT FELIX SAID

He told the club's official website: "It’s a chance for me to find a home. After two loans, Chelsea and Barca, I needed to stay permanently in one place. There is no better place for me to be than Chelsea. I see a perfect place to shine. It was a little bit of a lot of things that made me want to come back: the project, the club, the league, the fans, the time I spent here that I loved. I felt really good when I was here, despite the results we had. I’m really happy to be back.

"I’ve developed as a player in a lot of ways: the perception of the game, and the spaces the ball can arrive easily where I can make more impact. I try to figure it out by watching some videos of me of my games. I’ve kind of changed since I was last here. I’m 24 now. I’ll be 25 in November. I feel like I grew up as a player. That’s normal with age. I’m more prepared for the Premier League. I feel like my best years are ahead of me. I have no doubt about that. The best years are still to come. And this year is going to be a good year, because now I am permanently at home, and I can enjoy home."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Felix becomes Chelsea's 10th signing of a hectic summer and he will hope that he can finally make an impact after a tough few years. Felix failed to find a regular spot in the starting XI with the Catalan giants last season, but will aim to make an impact at Stamford Bridge amid intense competition for a place in the the starting XI.

Man Utd sources say Erik ten Hag is refusing to bow to INEOS transfer plan

Manchester United believe Erik ten Hag is refusing to adhere to INEOS' plans for the summer transfer window, due to his thoughts on the future of a struggling player.

Man Utd transfer & manager updates

This summer has the potential to be a very busy one at Old Trafford, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe no doubt desperate to bring in new players who can take the club in the right direction.

Numerous individuals have been linked with moves to United of late, with Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva a player who could make the move to Old Trafford this summer. This season, he has completed 92.7% of his passes in the Primeira Liga, which is bettered only by Lisandro Martinez (93.6%) out of the Red Devils entire squad to have started a Premier League game this season, suggesting he would fit into the manager's style of playing out from the back.

Highly-rated Juventus defender Dean Huijsen has also emerged as a target, with Tottenham targeting a move for him, too, with the 18-year-old making eight appearances in Serie A so far this season.

Meanwhile, there are also doubts over the future of Ten Hag as manager, with the Dutchman still not wholly convincing in the role, and it has led to Antonio Conte being linked with replacing him at the end of the season.

Zinedine Zidane is also being looked at as an option for United, with the Frenchman winning three Champions League titles during a legendary spell at Real Madrid, and Ratcliffe is believed to see him as a primary target. Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann is also considered a front-runner to come in and take the team into the future, with the 36-year-old set to depart his current role after Euro 2024 this summer.

Ten Hag disagress with INEOS over Antony

According to Football Insider, Ten Hag still sees a future at Manchester United for Antony, which is a different stance to INEOS, who want him to leave this summer.

Antony

"Erik ten Hag still believes in Man United winger Antony and is a big fan of the Brazillian, sources have told Football Insider. Ten Hag refuses to budge in his defence of the 24-year-old despite his poor performances in the 2023-24 campaign. INEOS’ recent investment has meant big recruitment plans are in place at Old Trafford – but the Dutchman still believes there is a place for Antony in the squad.

The fact that there are already potential clashes between Ten Hag and INEOS doesn't bode well for the manager – in truth, there is only going to be one loser in that situation if it continues.

While it is nice to see the manager showing faith in Antony, having previously managed him at Ajax and called him "outstanding", it makes complete sense to move him on this summer. This is down to a consistent lack of end product, with the Brazilian not registering a single goal or assist across 20 Premier League appearances this season.

Man Utd may already have a bigger prospect than Amad in “enormous talent”

The youngster has been on fire for the U21’s.

ByTom Lever Mar 1, 2024

To put that into context, even Aaron Wan-Bissaka (1), a defence-minded player, has more goal contributions than him in the league.

For an attacking player, that is a woeful return, and while Antony is still a relatively young player, he is old enough for more to be expected of him. United should cash in on him and sign a superior replacement, taking the hit on the £85m spent on him.

Clean-sweep danger looms for Sri Lanka against depleted New Zealand

New Zealand will be looking to seal just their second series clean sweep in a three-match T20I series, and their first away from home

The Preview by Madushka Balasuriya05-Sep-2019

Danushka Gunathilaka steers the ball fine•AFP

Big PictureWith the series already wrapped up, New Zealand have the chance to seal just their second series clean sweep in a three-match T20I series, and their first away from home. However, they have an issue to deal with: a spate of injuries has thinned the squad to just eleven fit, available players. With Hamish Rutherford having flown in for the out-of-commission Martin Guptill, and Ross Taylor quite possibly still carrying an injury but having little choice but to soldier on, the technical make-up of the side will remain unchanged. For Sri Lanka the injuries will hurt a little more. Kusal Mendis, who had looked back to his best in the first two games following a push to the top of the order, will be a big loss. That said, his likely replacement Danushka Gunathilaka has also looked in good form off late, and will be eager to capitalise on a rare opportunity back in the XI.The other concern for the home side is the potential loss of Shehan Jayasuriya, which while on the face of it doesn’t look too damaging, it does throw the team balance off somewhat. Jayasuriya had provided Sri Lanka with middle-order stability and an extra spin-bowling option. With no other spinner in the squad, Sri Lanka will be forced to go in with a possibly superfluous seaming option.Injury worries aside, Sri Lanka will be keen to end the series on a high. They came close in the first two games, but were second-best in the crunch moments. Against a New Zealand outfit that seems to just know how to win, those defeats would have been tough but important lessons – ones that Lasith Malinga will be hoping his young charges have taken note of.Form guideSri Lanka (last five results, most recent first) LLLLL
New Zealand WWWLW
In the spotlightAt one point during the last two years, Danushka Gunathilaka was a shoo-in for both of Sri Lanka’s limited-overs squads, but a string of disciplinary issues saw him temporarily exiled from the national fold. However, recent domestic performances indicate he may be close to his best. While his checkered disciplinary record may yet take some remedying, he can certainly make the process go faster with a performance here.Hamish Rutherford last played a T20 international for New Zealand in 2013, he last played a game for them in 2015. With New Zealand slated to play five T20Is next month in England, in many ways this is a free hit for Rutherford. Impress and you’re in contention for a spot you didn’t even know was available, fail and things just go back to as they were.Team newsSri Lanka will likely be without both Kusal Mendis and Shehan Jayasuriya following their collision in second game. Mendis had been one of the few Sri Lankan batsmen to consistently have the better of New Zealand’s attack. Danushka Gunathilaka, who had impressed in the warm-up game, will probably be his replacement. Fast-bowling allrounder Lahiru Madushanka meanwhile will likely pip Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara to the XI, owing to the former’s proficiency with the bat.Sri Lanka (possible XI) 1 Danushka Gunathilaka, 2 Kusal Perera (wk), 3 Avishka Fernando, 4 Niroshan Dickwella, 5 Dasun Shanaka, 6 Wanindu Hasaranga, 7 Isuru Udana, 8 Lahiru Madushanka 9 Akila Dananjaya, 10 Lasith Malinga (capt), 11 Lakshan SandakanBoth teams have been rocked by injuries, though New Zealand will probably be the happier of the two sides on that front. Ross Taylor has just about been ruled fit to play, which will be a relief to all involved after his injury replacement in the last game, Tom Bruce, picked up a knock himself. Bruce will be subjected to a fitness test before the game.New Zealand (possible XI) 1 Hamish Rutherford/Tom Bruce, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Tim Seifert (wk), 4 Colin de Grandhomme, 5 Ross Taylor, 6 Daryl Mitchell, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Scott Kuggeleijn, 9 Seth Rance, 10 Tim Southee (capt), 11 Ish SodhiPitch and conditionsThere was more in the surface for the batsman in the second game in Pallekele on Tuesday, though there was still plenty in it for the bowlers – the spinners in particular enjoying themselves. With ground staff having had two days to work on the wicket, expect yet another even contest between bat and ball. Rain, as always, is a possibility.Stats and trivia With Lasith Malinga having become the highest wicket-taker in T20Is, Sri Lanka now top the wicket-taking charts in all formats, with Muttiah Muralitharan leading in Tests and ODIs If Sri Lanka lose, it will be their fourth T20I loss in a row at home, making it their joint-worst streak in the format at home On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s record of seven wins and four losses in 13 matches in Pallekele is their best at any venue

Rashid Khan lauds 'great team effort', dedicates match award to Mohammad Nabi

Shakib Al Hasan credits Afghanistan for the way “they kept us under pressure and under their nose” in the Chattogram Test

Smile while you’re winning – Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi after the Test victory•BCB

Rashid Khan, not yet 21 and in his first Test as captain, spun Afghanistan to a memorable win, by 224 runs in Chattogram, and picked up the Man-of-the-Match award too, for his 11 wickets and half-century in the first innings. It was a time to celebrate, but also bid farewell to Mohammad Nabi from Test cricket, a job Rashid did in style by dedicating his match award to “the legend”.”He has totally helped me a lot and other spinners a lot as well, since I’ve been in the side, and still he is with us in the ODIs and T20s, but in the longer format that experience was always great,” Rashid said. “I wish him all the best and thanks for all your service for the country. I want to dedicate this Man of the Match to Nabi.”While Nabi played his part with the ball in the Test, the performance from seniors and newcomers alike was heartening for Afghanistan, who have now won two of their three Test matches since becoming a Test-playing country. Asghar Afghan, the former captain, hit twin half-centuries, while Ibrahim Zadran, on debut, scored 21 and 87, and Qais Ahmed and Zahir Khan, both debutant spinners, held their own.”Thanks to the almighty Allah for this performance, under my captaincy we won this game against a big side like Bangladesh. We are new in this format, so the credit goes to the coaching staff [and] the players the way they prepared for this game,” Rashid gushed. “Before coming here, we had a camp in Abu Dhabi, that was one of the hottest games I have ever had. After playing in 46-47 [degrees], when you come in this weather, it is very easy for you.”The plan which was given to the players, each and every one – batting, bowling, fielding – everyone just tried and applied himself. The only thing from my side was to keep going out, keep enjoying yourself, enjoy your batting, enjoy your bowling. Much credit goes to everyone in the batting, and the bowlers, the way we did the job. Especially the youngsters Qais and Zahir, and Yamin [Ahmadzai, the quick bowler], the way he bowled in the first innings. So it was a great team effort and we are really pleased with that.”Rashid credited the Afghanistan Cricket Board for putting in place a four-day system at home, which, he said, has helped the youngsters deal with the demands of the longest format well.”The youngsters who are coming, they are applying themselves really quickly. They are learning from their mistakes. Especially now, we have a good four-day structure back home, we play ten to 12 four-day matches. That is helping the youngsters get used to the longer format and not just the T20s or ODIs,” he said. “Everyone was focusing on his job and trying to give 100%. We are really famous with the shorter format but the challenge was for us, especially with the batsmen, to stay on the wicket and spend as much time as possible. They have done a terrific job.”While Rashid was celebrating, Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh Test and T20I captain, wore a desolate look, after overseeing a below-par performance. They were behind the eight-ball for the longest part but, thanks to the weather, had a good shot at saving the Test on the last day, with four wickets in hand and a minimum of 18.3 overs to bat out, light permitting. They lasted just 15.1.”I think it’s a combination of both – application of our batsmen, and at the same time I think Afghanistan bowled really well, so the credit goes to them for the way they played throughout this Test match,” Shakib said, trying to explain the result. “So we need to do a lot of hard work to become a very good, consistent team. But credit goes to Afghanistan for the way they kept us under pressure and under their nose.”Asked if the build-up was wrong, or that Bangladesh’s lack of Test matches in recent times was a factor, Shakib disagreed: “Well, after playing for 20 years, we can’t say it’s a build-up or something like that. It might be [that] these guys are not playing Test match for a while. It has been a while since we played our last Test match (in March in New Zealand), so that might be the reason.”[But we should] just forget this match as soon as possible and we need to look forward to the T20 series, because Afghanistan is a very good T20 side, and we have to play our best cricket if we want to do well in that tournament. [The T20] World Cup [is] coming up next year and we need to focus on our T20 at this moment.”

Ten Hag could end Martial’s Man Utd career with "monster" £43m signing

Erik ten Hag's focus this week will be on Manchester United's FA Cup tie away to Newport County on Sunday.

Last time out, the Red Devils were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Spurs, in a game that showed promise yet also frustration.

However, in the background, his recruitment staff will be identifying potential targets to make a late move this winter, with a striker being the position of focus.

Man Utd's striker search

According to football journalist Graeme Bailey, Man United are monitoring Benjamin Sesko.

It's stated that United's scouting team was at RB Leipzig's clash with Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend with Sesko one of the players on their radar ahead of a prospective move.

Benjamin Sesko

Reports from Germany suggest that the Slovenian can be bought for £43m in the summer due to a release clause in his contract.

Therefore, a move this January is highly unlikely, with a more short-term deal on the agenda at Old Trafford.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024 The stats that show Benjamin Sesko would thrive at Man Utd

It doesn't seem like two minutes ago that Anthony Martial glided through the Liverpool defence to score on his debut back in 2015, and at that moment, the French wonderkid looked destined to become a United great.

However, his career has been completely tarnished by injuries, which have prevented him from developing into the player he once promised. This season in the Premier League, the former Monaco man has played 13 matches with an average of 35 minutes per game.

With the 28-year-old out of contract in the summer, Ten Hag may look to cash in on the attacker this month in order to partially fund the move for Sesko in the summer.

Nonetheless, let's take a look at the young prospect who has been nicknamed the "Slovenian Erling Haaland" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, by showing his stats from the last year across the top European leagues.

As you can see, Sesko is the definition of a pure striker who only has one thought on his mind: scoring goals.

Combine that with his height and lightning speed, and it is no wonder he's been compared to Haaland by many in the game.

Crucially, just like last season's Premier League top scorer, Sesko is a clinical finisher who has an incredible goals/shot ratio per game, which is the exact same as Haaland's, which proves he has the potential to become elite.

Furthermore, the duo, who both made their name at RB Salzburg, aren't the most technical players who like to be heavily involved in the build-up, with the City star ranking in the bottom 5% of strikers in Europe for passes completed. That said, they thrive in the penalty area where they can use their power, athleticism, and goal-scoring instincts to full advantage.

Overall, the duo are similar in their style, attributes and pathway to the top of the game, and Man United could be making an extremely smart move by selling Martial to secure the 20-year-old who will become a "future icon" as per scout Jacek Kulig.
