Whelan wowed by Spurs transfer approach

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit and BBC Radio Leeds regular Noel Whelan has been left in awe of Tottenham Hotspur after their approach to sign Miralem Pjanic on loan from Barcelona.

The Lowdown: Spurs make Pjanic approach…

As per Spanish publication Sport, Tottenham’s managing director Fabio Paratici asked the La Liga giants about loaning Pjanic in a recent transfer approach.

The Bosnia international is being linked with a move away from the Camp Nou this summer after featuring only sporadically last season in La Liga. Pjanic was handed just six starts by Catalans boss Ronald Koeman, with Tottenham now making an approach to take him to north London.

The Latest: Whelan in awe of Pjanic call…

Speaking to Football Insider, BBC pundit Whelan has praised Tottenham and Pjanic after this development, calling the midfield maestro a signing fans want to see.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-3/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He also hailed the former Juventus star as an ‘amazing player’, saying: “Fans will want to see players like that coming to Tottenham.

“Despite them not being in the Champions League, they’ve got to find quality somewhere.

“Players that are going to accept not playing in those sort of competitions. Someone who is looking to the future to put themselves back in contention to play there.

“It’s vital as a manager that you don’t just go out there looking for 21-year-olds. There’s been a lot of criticism of how they’ve dealt with picking the manager.

“He’s a Bosnia international. He’s been at Barcelona, he’s an amazing player, he’s competitive. That’s what’s Tottenham need to be again. They need to find that nice balance.”

The Verdict: Avoid…

Over the league games in which he did feature, Pjanic averaged an excellent 91.4% passing accuracy in the middle of the park, highlighting his quality as a ball-distributor. However, his wage demands – reported to be around £210,000 per week – far exceed anything he can bring to the table for Tottenham.

It seems unlikely that chairman Daniel Levy would be willing to pay this hefty salary as Barcelona seek to trim their enormous wage bill. With Gareth Bale going back to Real Madrid, Pjanic’s current paycheque would make him the highest-paid player at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Bosnian would come as a man with proven quality, but this move could be too detrimental financially to Spurs, especially with Pjanic now 31 years old.

Norwich on the verge of Angus Gunn signing

Norwich City look set to complete the signing of goalkeeper Angus Gunn from Southampton, with a medical reportedly lined up for him.

The Lowdown: Gunn linked with move

The Canaries are preparing for their return to the Premier League following their triumphant 2020/21 Championship campaign which saw them win the title.

New signings are expected to come in this summer and Gunn has been strongly linked with a move in recent weeks, having enjoyed a spell on loan at Carrow Road back in 2017/18.

The Latest: Medical lined up

It looks as though a move is now close to being completed, with Football Insider reporting that the 25-year-old will undergo a medical on Monday.

Norwich are believed to have fought off late interest from Leeds United, with Gunn deciding to emulate his father Bryan and join the Canaries.

The Verdict: Shrewd signing by Norwich

This is a move which makes perfect sense for Norwich, not only because of Gunn’s family links to the club, but also because of his quality, having being hailed as ‘amazing’ by Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl in the past.

He can provide stiff competition for Tim Krul between the sticks, and at 25 he is still young for a goalkeeper, meaning he should only improve in the coming years. He also boasts Premier League experience and had a decent 2020/21 campaign on loan at Stoke, keeping six clean sheets in 15 appearances and conceding a respectable 21 goals (Transfermarkt).

Squad depth is vital in the Premier League, so having two strong options in goal can only be a good thing for Daniel Farke’s side as they get reacquainted with top-flight football once more.

In other news, a pundit has claimed Norwich have a replacement lined up for Emiliano Buendia. Read more here.

Liverpool fans react to post-Konate plans

Liverpool kicked off their summer spending on Friday with the signing of central defender Ibrahima Konate from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

The Reds activated a £36m release clause to land the French Under-21 international, but there may be other important areas to address as Jurgen Klopp’s side look to regain their Premier League crown from Manchester City after needing a late rally to secure a third-placed finish this time around.

With Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane set for Africa Cup of Nations duty in the New Year, the Reds might need another high-quality forward option to ensure that their title bid doesn’t stutter in the absence of their two top scorers from 2020/21.

With Georginio Wijnaldum poised to leave as he approaches the end of his contract at Anfield, another midfield signing may be needed to guard against a succession of injuries.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano was asked on Twitter if more additions were on the way after Konate’s arrival at Liverpool and he replied: “For sure… Liverpool will sign some players, don’t worry”.

His response sparked a frenzy of excitement from many Kopites on Twitter, with some wryly commenting that FSG could be set for a rare summer spending spree amid previous criticism from some fans for a conservative approach.

QPR interested in Andre Dozzell

Queens Park Rangers are interested in a move to bring Andre Dozzell to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by TWTD, who claim that Mark Warburton’s side, along with the likes of Brentford and Blackburn Rovers, are considering a move for the Ipswich Town midfielder upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the month.

It is reported that the Ipswich manager Paul Cook has informed the 22-year-old that he does not have a future at Portman Road and will subsequently be free to leave Suffolk in the coming weeks.

Bhatia must move

Considering just how important Dozzell was within the Tractor Boys’ side last season, the news that Cook has no intention of keeping the youngster on at the club this summer comes as something of a surprise.

Indeed, over his 43 League One appearances last term, the former England U20 international registered one assist and created 10 big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.5 interceptions, 1.7 tackles and 1.3 key passes per game.

These metrics saw the £3.5k-per-week midfielder earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.98, ranking him as the club’s joint seventh-best performer in the third tier of English football.

As such, the fact that QPR are considering a move for the player whom Paul Simpson dubbed an “incredible” talent this summer is hardly surprising, as the £810k-rated man appears to be a fantastic prospect for the future, as well as already being a considerable talent at present.

Furthermore, with Dozzell being available on a free transfer, a deal for the midfielder would also be extremely kind on the Rs’ finances, leading us to the conclusion that Amit Bhatia simply must do everything he can to get a deal over the line for the Ipswich star this summer, as his signing would not only benefit Warburton’s side on the pitch, but he would also represent excellent value for money.

Mediocre Pakistan at Lord's

Pakistan went into this match with five pace bowlers expecting the ball to deviate sharply and to take advantage of a pitch, which had been under cover all day yesterday

Pakistan went into this match with five pace bowlers expecting the ball to deviate sharply and to take advantage of a pitch, which had been under cover all day yesterday. In my opinion, playing both all-rounders, Razzaq and Azhar was a defensive ploy. Oddly, in recent series the selectors are forever trying to bolster Pakistan’s fragile batting. Saqlain, on the other hand, would have provided Pakistan with much relished variety. No other side in the world could ever comprehend dropping such a world-class performer. I bet some of the Surrey members are mystified by this strange decision.Waqar was very upbeat in his pre-match interview but strangely, the whole team seemed subdued in the morning session. Rashid Latif had a decent workout after a long stint away from the national team but he could have been more vocal and energetic to help boost-up his teammates and keep them on their toes. Right from the outset, Wasim Akram looked out of sorts. He never cocked his wrist properly and seemed unable to hit the seam consistently today. Apart from Azhar Mahmood, all the other bowlers were guilty of bowling short. They forgot that in England in May, one must pitch the ball up to the batsman to give it more distance to swing.Waqar and Razzaq were steady but never looked menacing. Azhar Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers and benefited from bowling a tight line and pitching the ball up to the batsman. Shoaib bowled fast but bowled only three overs in his first spell, casting doubt over his match fitness. Under the same conditions at Lord’s, Glen McGrath decimated the English batting in the last Ashes series. It was important for Pakistan to make an early breakthrough, but Atherton was resolute and gritty and it was a surprise when he played down the wrong line in the end, to give Azhar a much-deserved second wicket. Trescothick has struck a rich vein of form all through the last few weeks of the new English season and was aggressive to put a lot of pressure on Pakistani bowlers by being positive.Eventually, he played a loose shot against Razzaq’s well pitched up ball and was snapped up at gully by Azhar. Vaughan batted like a seasoned professional but the Pakistanis furthered his case by bowling short outside off-stump, clearly his strong suit. Bowling to Vaughan, seemed lacking a game plan and if they had one, they did not stick to it. In the end it was pure luck and a good catch by Rashid Latif to bring his down fall.Nasser Hussain and Graham Thorpe were determined and batted as though they knew their mission. Thorpe, who was Pakistan’s nemesis last winter, looks set to haunt them in summer too. He is by far the best England batsman and the stroke, which brought his fifty, was so reminiscent of my old friend, Javed Miandad. Like Miandad, he is tenacious and has his own agenda in every match. The way he batted against our spinners last winter was a real eye opener for all of us. It took a lot of imagination from Waqar to prize him out. Nevertheless it was a brilliant innings and he may well have already done enough damage in this game.Nasser Hussain was at his patient best. He survived a couple of close leg before decisions but he hung in there for his team’s sake. He blocked our best bowler Azhar in the afternoon and prospered in the post-tea session with some help from our tiring bowlers. While all is not lost, Pakistan needs to have a good day tomorrow otherwise they might be looking up at the gray skies to ease them out of their predicament. My honest view is their dilemma is self-inflected.Pakistan’s out fielding today, was at its worst. English batsmen were allowed to pick up singles at will and some of the balls that crossed the boundary were well within the reach of the fielders. Modern dives and slides seemed to be a thing of the past again. If Pakistan team wants to recapture its glory days in England, I am afraid their work rate needs serious examination. Why were the tourists forced to bowl Younis Khan on the 1st day when they had five fast bowlers at their disposal? It does not make any sense to me. Does it to you?
