Balaji's four gives Tamil Nadu dominant start

L Balaji’s 12th first-class four-wicket haul helped Tamil Nadu bowl Assam out for 184 on the opening day at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Assam began cautiously after TN chose to field on a pitch that had plenty of carry, and the openers had seen off 13.3 overs, adding 24 before debutant seamer Sunil Sam made the first breakthrough. Dheeraj Jadhav, Assam’s top-scorer last season, slashed and edged to the wicketkeeper. Sridharan Sriram, the left-hand batsman who hails from TN, could not make an impact against his old team-mates, and became Balaji’s first victim when he cut to gully. Parvez Aziz played offspinner R Ashwin with confidence and had moved to 36 with six boundaries. He also fought through a stream of bouncers before offering S Badrinath a catch off Balaji’s bowling. Badrinath had to dive low and to his left at second slip to take the chance. When star import Amol Muzumdar departed for a duck, nicking Balaji behind, TN sensed an opportunity to shoot Assam out for a low score. The spinners Aushik Srinivas and R Ashwin nipped three wickets between them, while a couple of run-outs added to Assam’s woes as they stumbled to a score under 200. TN’s openers Abhinav Mukund and Srikkanth Anirudha then batted with determination to take their side to 21 without loss by the close.Wasim Jaffer purred along to his 40th first-class century, while Rohit Sharma missed his ninth by seven runs as Mumbai launched their title defence by scoring 340 for 7 on the opening day at the Bandra Kurla Complex against Saurashtra. On a day that would have left both sides reasonably satisfied, there were several important individual performances that stood out. Dropping himself to No. 3 in the absence of the injured middle-order bulwark Ajinkya Rahane, Jaffer carried on his penchant for plundering domestic hundreds, after Jayesh Odedra’s double-strike. At the other end, with the selectors’ eye on his fitness and temperament, Rohit launched himself into the Saurashtra attack with typical elegance. His 93 came off 86 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes, leading Mumbai to 252 for 2 and in sight of a towering score. Then came the third most significant performance of the day, from another India hopeful. Ravindra Jadeja has had his place in the Indian questioned by all and sundry, and he responded with an incisive spell with the game threatening to run away. He dismissed Sharma, Abhishek Nayar and Ramesh Powar, leading Saurashtra’s resurgence in the evening session and left them with an opportunity to finish Mumbai’s innings early on the second day.For more on this match, click here.Opener Arindam Das’ seventh first-class century was the highlight of the opening day at the Feroz Shah Kotla as Bengal posted a dominant 313 for 2 against a Delhi attack that struggled for incisiveness. Ten months after the abandonment of an ODI due to an underprepared pitch, the Kotla track was at its benign best as Das settled down for a big innings, in Shreevats Goswami’s company. The pair raised 133 in 37.2 overs, giving the hosts a taste of what was to come before Goswami fell for 68, the first of Mithun Manhas’ two wickets. Abhishek Chowdhury was more cautious, but it did not affect Bengal’s speed of scoring as Das shifted gears upwards. Manoj Tiwary who came in at Chowdhury’s exit kept the momentum going with an unbeaten 47 off 80 balls. At the other end, Das, kicked on after reaching his ton and finished the day unbeaten on 150. His knock included 19 fours, and he looked good for more when stumps were drawn. For more on this match, click here.Yuvraj Singh managed a half-century but, like the rest of his top-order mates, was guilty of throwing away a start, as Uttar Pradesh held Punjab to 279 for 6 on the opening day at the Bhamashah Stadium in Meerut. Sarul Kanwar began in aggressive fashion after Punjab chose to bat, striking eight fours in his run-a-ball 42. However, after an opening stand worth 56, Praveen Kumar removed Kanwar and Ravi Inder Singh off successive overs, exposing Punjab’s middle order. Uday Kaul rebuilt in Yuvraj’s company, the pair raising 61 for the third wicket before a mini-collapse reduced Punjab to 143 for 5. Karan Goel rose to the occasion, and along with Vishwas Bhalla, lifted his side to respectability with a 72-run alliance. Piyush Chawla prised out Bhalla, but Harmeet Singh counterattacked with four fours and a six in his 29, taking Punjab to stumps along with Goel, who was unbeaten on 56.Gujarat‘s top order gave a good account of themselves without managing to dominate the Railways attack, leaving both sides on par at stumps on an attritional opening day at the Karnail Singh Stadium. Every Gujarat batsman got a start in a score of 234 for 4, but only one managed to reach fifty, while most bowlers gained respect without making enough entries in the wickets column. Jay Desai and Priyank Kirit Panchal ground out an opening stand of 58 in 28 overs before exiting on the same score. Niraj Patel and Parthiv Patel showed more urgency in a stand of 74, but both failed to kick on, as Gujarat found themselves unable to reap the rewards of solidity. That partnership, however, eased the pressure on the remaining batsmen. Bhavik Thaker, coming in at No. 5, did better than the top four, ensuring he crossed his half-century and remained unbeaten at stumps. His innings included two fours and a six off consecutive deliveries from Faiz Fazal. Debutant Pratharesh Parmar held up the other end with an undefeated 28 and the pair will want to push ahead on the second day. Parthiv praised his batsmen for their effort. “The wicket was green and two-paced,” he told the . “So, it was a challenge to play the first 30 overs and we did it.”Opening bowler Basanth Mohanty completed his sixth first-class five-wicket haul as Orissa bullied Baroda, reducing them to 99 for 9 on a curtailed day at the Barabati Stadium. After overnight rains delayed the start by half an hour, Orissa captain Shiv Sundar Das had no hesitation in bowling after winning the toss in damp, seamer-friendly conditions. Baroda’s batsmen, star players Yusuf Pathan and Ambati Rayudu included, had no answers against Basanth in an innings where only three batsmen managed to enter double-figures. Things could have been far worse for Baroda if not for Rakesh Solanki’s unbeaten 44. Debasis Mohanty, Alok Chandra Sahoo and Dhiraj Singh complemented Basanth’s efforts with a wicket apiece as Baroda derailed in shocking fashion.Himachal Pradesh‘s bowlers contained Haryana on the opening day, as the visitors crawled to 204 for 4 in Dharmasala. After choosing to field, the hosts started well, with seamer Jitendra Mehta removing Nitin Saini for five, but wickets were hard to come by after that. Rahul Dewan held vigil for 40 watchful overs, his 46 pushing the score to 88, before he perished against Ashok Thakur. Manav Sharma and Hemang Badani carried on in the same vein, their partnership of 74 spanning nearly 30 overs before Manav fell four short of his half-century. Badani brought up his 37th first-class fifty, and the first for Haryana, but more importantly, ensured he was unbeaten till the end.

Villa fans react to Ornstein transfer claim

Reliable reporter David Ornstein believes that Aston Villa may look at signing a central midfielder on deadline day.

The Athletic reporter was speaking live on Sky Sports and had many Villa fans talking on social media.

The Villans have been after a new midfielder this month following Marvelous Nakamba’s serious injury towards the end of 2021. However, so far they have had no luck, with offers for Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur being rejected by Brighton and Juventus respectively.

Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara is thought to be another player on the midfield shortlist, but there have been no significant updates on Villa and the Frenchman for over a week.

According to Ornstein [via @AVFCFaithful], who was speaking on Sky Sports News’ transfer deadline day coverage, Villa may have another nibble at a central midfielder in the final hours of the January window.

Celtic: Shaw impressing for Motherwell

Having sealed a £300k move to Celtic last summer, Liam Shaw’s career at Parkhead got off to something of a slow start.

Indeed, the 20-year-old went on to make just two appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side in the first half of the season, playing nine minutes of the 0-0 draw with St. Mirren towards the end of December, and making his Europa League debut in the 3-2 win over Real Betis earlier the same month.

In this European tie, the £315k-rated midfielder highly impressed, enjoying 46 touches of the ball, completing 20 passes and three dribbles, as well as making two tackles, two clearances, blocking two shots and winning eight of his 11 duels – with these returns seeing the youngster earn a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 7.1.

However, despite an extremely promising display in his first start for the Bhoys, Postecoglou made the decision to loan the former Sheffield Wednesday starlet out to Motherwell in the January transfer window – where the £4k-per-week dynamo already appears to be making a good impression.

Indeed, prior to making an appearance for the Steelmen, the club’s assistant manager, Keith Lasley, suggested that Shaw was impressing in training, stating: “Liam’s in training with us and he has been for a few days now. He looks a good athlete and he looks technically good.

“You can see why he’s been highly thought of down at Sheffield Wednesday and you can see why Celtic have brought him up. Hopefully he makes an impact in the second half of the season. He looks a good player and I am looking forward to seeing him in action.”

And, after three fixtures with Well, the 20-year-old looks to be living up to this early promise, having already made an average of a whopping 4.3 tackles, 0.3 interceptions and 0.6 key passes per game, as well as winning 15 of his 25 duels – a success rate of 60% – with these returns seeing the midfielder average a SofaScore match rating of 6.9.

As such, while it is true that Postecoglou has brought in the likes of Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and Yosuke Ideguchi in the middle of the park this season, should Shaw continue his current level of form away from Celtic Park, come the end of the season, the 20-year-old could well find himself ahead of players such as James McCarthy, Ismaila Soro and even Nir Bitton in the defensive midfield pecking order at Parkhead.

Indeed, considering the fact that the £12.5k-per-week midfielder – who Ori Guttman once dubbed an “explosive” player – has been heavily linked with a move away from Celtic in recent months, Postecoglou could already have a readymade replacement for the Ivorian in the shape of Shaw.

Two Newcastle transfers may be immiennt

Newcastle United are ‘likely’ to sign two players this week, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

The lowdown

Last weekend, Newcastle played host to relegation rivals Watford, who sit just above the bottom three. The Magpies took the lead through Allan Saint-Maximin, only for Joao Pedro to snatch a point for the Hornets three minutes from time.

The draw leaves Eddie Howe’s men 19th in the table with just one win and 12 points from their first 20 matches.

Their next match sees them travel to 15th-placed Leeds United on Saturday, with the Whites putting daylight between themselves and the danger zone with back-to-back wins in the league, so it’s fair to say that the pressure is on for the Magpies.

The latest

Edwards took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to write that Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos is ‘edging closer’ to joining, and while his arrival is yet to be confirmed, senior club officials have been hard at  work trying to bolster the squad before the weekend trip to Elland Road.

The journalist is currently unsure about the identity of the second player who’s likely to join, as he tweeted: “Diego Carlos is edging closer to a #nufc move but still not confirmed yet. Told senior club officials have been working round the clock to secure targets and boost squad before Leeds. They have encountered resistance at every turn but 2 players (I can’t get other name) are likely”.

The verdict

Carlos’ impending arrival should be a significant boost given the Magpies’ defensive struggles. They have the worst record for expected goals against in the Premier League, but the hope will be that the 2019/20 Europa League winner with Sevilla shores them up at the back.

Who could the mystery second man be? Perhaps it’s Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata, for whom Newcastle have reportedly made an offer, and the Colombian marksman is believed to be open to joining.

If the Magpies agree to meet Atalanta’s €45m (£37.6m) asking price, that may be a deal they can get done in the next five days.

Alastair Cook set to stand by four bowlers

Alastair Cook is preparing to stick with the same balance of seven batsmen and four bowlers that carried his side to a comfortable, if somewhat laboured, 181-run victory in the first Test at Chittagong

Heavy workload: Graeme Swann will face more long spells in the second Test if England stick with a four-man attack•Associated Press

Alastair Cook is preparing to stick with the same balance of seven batsmen and four bowlers that carried his side to a comfortable, if somewhat laboured, 181-run victory in the first Test at Chittagong, as he aims to hand the England captaincy back to Andrew Strauss with a 100% record from his first tour in charge. On the eve of the second Test at Dhaka, England are still weighing up their options and have not ruled out the introduction of a second spinner in James Tredwell to partner their ten-wicket Man of the Match from Chittagong, Graeme Swann. But in the absence of a genuine allrounder – and Luke Wright has been virtually eliminated from their considerations – the likelihood of calling upon a five-man attack seems slim, especially now that England have a 1-0 lead in the series, and therefore no need to gamble with their selection.”Historically four bowlers tend to do very well,” said Cook. “In an ideal world you’d love to find that fifth bowler who can bat to find the perfect balance, and obviously that’s what great allrounders like Jacques Kallis bring to the side, but they are few and far between. There’s always a chance this pitch might suit a different attack or it might spin more, so you have to go with whatever side you think will win the game.”England’s preparations received a boost when their senior fast bowler, Stuart Broad, reported fit after missing Thursday’s practice with a stomach complaint. Assuming he is fully recovered, the only realistic change to the line-up that played at Chittagong would be the introduction of Tredwell at the expense of one of the other two seamers, most probably Steven Finn. However, given the positive impression he made on debut, an unchanged XI is the likelier scenario.”We’ll sit down after a look at the wicket and pick a team to win the game,” said Cook. “If we think that two seamers and two spinners is the best way to go, then we will do that, even though it is very un-English. We are used to playing in English conditions where it’s very unlikely you’d ever to go out with fewer than three seamers. But these are the selection decisions that do come up in the subcontinent, and if we want to do expand our game on turning wickets, we’re going to have to get used to it.”Broad’s most notable moment in a somewhat lacklustre performance at Chittagong was his failure to address the umpire while appealing for an lbw decision against Abdur Razzak, and with Swann also attracting opprobrium for his four-lettered send-off to Bangladesh’s centurion, Junaid Siddique, England’s behaviour will be under scrutiny at Dhaka. Cook, however, was unconcerned. “A lot has been made of those two incidents but the umpires haven’t reported it, and the match referee hasn’t reported it,” he said.”They were probably very close to the mark and Swanny has apologised, but we want to play hard, aggressive cricket and our disciplinary record over the last couple of years has been exceptional,” he added. “You want to play close to the edge but if you do go over, you have to hold your hands up.”However, a mean streak will doubtless be essential during England’s next overseas Test assignment, which just happens to be the small matter of an Ashes tour in roughly nine months’ time, and Cook admitted that some of the team’s thoughts and plans were already beginning to be projected towards Brisbane, the scene of that eagerly awaited first Test – especially after the manner in which the team capitulated against South Africa at Johannesburg in January.”This is our last Test match away before we go to Australia and that has been noted,” he said. “We discussed the issue this week about what it means to play for England and wanting to win, and how big it is to win 2-0. We’ve got jobs to do and responsibilities, and it’s all part of our development as a side because in South Africa we didn’t really do ourselves justice in that last Test match. From Cook’s own point of view, he is ready to relinquish his stand-in role having become a more rounded and mature player, thanks to his opportunity to take charge of the team in Strauss’s absence. “I’ve got an understanding of what Straussy goes through and what you need from the people around you,” he said. “When I go back into the ranks I’ll a lot more confident in my thoughts and hopefully help Straussy a lot more.”The balance of his leadership and my role will hopefully improve. You definitely need an air of confidence from that right-hand man. During the field I’ll go and chat to Colly [Paul Collingwood] and his ideas are good, trustworthy ideas. You gain trust as a leader and hopefully I can give more help to Straussy, not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well.”England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Michael Carberry, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ian Bell, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 Steven Finn.

West Ham to ‘push ahead’ with Phillips

Writing for The Evening Standard, reliable reporter Jack Rosser has made a West Ham United transfer claim involving Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips.

The Lowdown: West Ham in defensive crisis…

As the Irons suffer a blow in their race for a top four finish, succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal on Wednesday evening, manager David Moyes’ task to keep West Ham fighting at the top could only get harder.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Amid a hectic schedule with his side continuing to battle on all fronts, injuries to Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma have left Moyes short in central defence.

Only Issa Diop and Craig Dawson remain as senior options for the Scotsman, prompting the club to look at targets in the January window to reinforce West Ham’s options.

The Latest: Reliable reporter makes Phillips claim…

As explained by Rosser, writing for The Evening Standard, West Ham are ‘prepared to push ahead’ with a move to sign Phillips from Liverpool despite his fractured cheekbone.

Moyes is personally keen to add another central defender to his ranks with the 24-year-old a target and his recent injury apparently will not be a factor to West Ham swooping next month.

The Verdict: Right move?

As Liverpool slash his asking price from the summer, we believe the Hammers and recruitment chief Rob Newman could be striking a bargain if they move for Phillips.

The Athletic reported in the summer that FSG valued the player at £15m, with The Standard now claiming they will let him go for £10m, and West Ham should take full advantage of the discount.

Lauded as a ‘monster’ by manager Jurgen Klopp, Phillips contributed well during their injury crisis in defence last season – starting 15 Premier League matches and making more clearances on average than any Liverpool player (WhoScored).

Still at a fairly young age, the defender has many years to develop and mature into an even better option and the fact he is homegrown could come as an even greater incentive.

Crystal Palace: Rob Street listed for loan

Crystal Palace have made young forward Rob Street available for loan for the second half of the season, as per Football Insider.

The lowdown

The 20-year-old ‘target man’, in the words of The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam, has made 31 appearances for Palace’s under-23 side and bagged 13 goals. He penned his first professional deal with the Eagles in the summer of 2020.

He spent the second half of last season with National League outfit Torquay United, but only made one start and five appearances overall.

The latest

According to Football Insider, Palace envisage Street as part of their first team going forward, but a source from the south London club told the publication that, for now, the priority is getting him regular games at senior level.

In order to accomplish that goal, they are looking to loan him out, and ‘several EFL clubs’ have already lodged enquiries.

The verdict

Another loan move, this time to a club in the Football League, looks the right step for Street.

He is clearly highly regarded at Palace, deservedly so given his under-23 exploits, and one of his coaches has even compared him to a young Ian Wright, who went on to rack up more than a century of Premier League goals.

However, it seems they don’t quite think he’s ready to feature for Patrick Vieira’s side just yet. He was named on the bench twice in the early part of the season, but he is still awaiting a full Eagles debut. The right loan move will hopefully prove a springboard towards that landmark being ticked off in 2022.
