Rivarly renewed: Man Utd & Barcelona's most memorable matches

The two clubs are set to meet in continental competition for the first time since 2019 and history suggests there will be fireworks…

The inevitable happened following Manchester United's failure to finish top of Europa League Group E, with a heavyweight tie against Champions League dropouts Barcelona confirmed during Monday's knockout round play-off draw.

Two of the world's biggest clubs, who boast eight European Cup wins between them, will clash over two legs in February for a place in the last 16, with the winners already being touted as champions-elect.

Barca edge their head-to-record, having won six games to United's three, while four of their meetings have ended in draws, only one of which was a 0-0 stalemate.

Their upcoming meeting will be the first on a Europa League stage, which shows how far they have both fallen in recent years, but there will still be plenty of top talent on display and an intriguing touchline duel to keep an eye on between Erik ten Hag and Xavi.

The question is, will this United vs Barca tie be able to rival any of those from the past?

Below, GOAL provides a recap of their most memorable battles, from a classic at Old Trafford to a masterclass at Wembley from a certain Lionel Messi…

Man Utd 3-0 Barcelona | Cup Winners' Cup | 1984

The memory of United overturning a two-goal semi-final deficit against Barca in the second leg of their 1983-84 Cup Winners' Cup campaign ranks among the fondest for the club's die-hard supporters, and for good reason.

United stormed to a 3-0 win as they completely overwhelmed the Blaugrana at Old Trafford, with Bryan Robson scoring twice and Frank Stapleton also getting in on the act.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona was essentially reduced to a spectator as Ron Atkinson's side executed the perfect gameplan, with Robson rightly grabbing most of the plaudits after a career-defining display.

Man Utd 2-1 Barcelona | Cup Winners’ Cup | 1991

May 15, 1991 – the night Sir Alex Ferguson's technically inferior Manchester United side battled their way to a 2-1 victory over Barcelona's 'Dream Team' in Rotterdam to claim the Cup Winners' Cup.

Then-Blaugrana boss Johan Cruyff famously argued the English outfit had "played the British game" to secure victory in his native Netherlands.

But the Dutchman's bitter words only sweetened the success for Ferguson, who had secured a first European trophy for United in 23 years thanks to two goals from a former Barca player, Mark Hughes.

Robson was the architect of both goals to cap another stellar all-round display as the underdogs held on for victory despite a late own goal from Les Sealey.

    Barcelona 3-3 Man Utd | Champions League | 1998

United were involved in a number of titanic tussles during their run to the treble in 1998-99, but few were more dramatic than their second 3-3 draw against Barca in the Champions League group stage.

The two teams somehow topped a thrilling first meeting at Old Trafford as they shared another six goals, with Barca crashing out of the competition despite the best efforts of a seemingly super-human Rivaldo.

The Brazilian scored two equalisers, hit the bar from 30 yards and produced a superb near-assist for Giovanni late on in a performance for the ages, but United ultimately went through alongside Bayern and went on to lift the trophy with a famous final win over the Germans at Camp Nou.

    Man Utd 1-0 Barcelona | Champions League | 2008

United also met Barca on their way to their second European Cup success under Ferguson, but this time it was defence that trumped attack as Messi & Co were kept quiet over two legs.

After earning a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou, the Red Devils took an early lead at home thanks to an absolutely sensational 25-yard strike from Paul Scholes that flew past Victor Valdes and into the top right corner of the net.

Barca dominated possession thereafter, but could find no way past a stubborn United rear-guard marshalled brilliantly by Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown, who gave a career-best performance after deputising for the injured Nemanja Vidic.

Man Utd player ratings vs Newcastle: Casemiro is a big-game baller! Brazil star leads Red Devils to Carabao Cup glory

The Red Devils ran out 2-0 winners at Wembley as Erik ten Hag secured his first silverware in English football with a victory over Eddie Howe's side

A Casemiro-inspired Manchester United ended their near six-year long wait for a trophy, beating Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

After an even, slightly untidy start where chances were at a premium, United blew the game wide open with two quickfire goals in just six first-half minutes.

The exceptional Casemiro grabbed the opener, nodding Luke Shaw's free kick past Loris Karius. And six minutes later, Marcus Rashford burst free of the Magpies' defence and fired on goal, with an unfortunate deflection off Sven Botman taking the ball into the net.

United didn't have it all their own way after the break as, buoyed by a rampant travelling support, Newcastle dialed up the pressure. In truth though, there was never much danger of them letting their lead slip as they clinched the first major silverware of the Erik ten Hag era.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    David de Gea (7/10):

His strong hand denied Saint-Maximin in the first half. Seemed pretty confident collecting high balls and sweeping up behind his defence.

    Diogo Dalot (4/10):

Early, and largely unnecessary booking, had him walking a tightrope. Saint-Maximin regularly had the beating of Dalot in all honesty, and it was little surprise to see him hooked at half-time.

    Lisandro Martinez (7/10):

Made a huge block to deny Bruno Guimaraes when Newcastle were piling on the pressure in the second half. What a superb piece of business.

    Raphael Varane (7/10):

Passing wasn't perfect, but very little wrong with his defending.

    Luke Shaw (7/10):

Absolutely delicious ball led to the opener. He also chipped in with some vital interceptions, showcasing his astute reading of the game.

    Midfield

    Casemiro (8/10):

Guided his header into the corner superbly to open the scoring. Barely did anything wrong – worth every penny United spent on him.

    Fred (6/10):

A nice foil for his compatriot. Typically full of energy, but was overly enthusiastic in his tackles on occasion. Taken off while on a booking.

    Bruno Fernandes (5/10):

Worked really hard off the ball but wasn't particularly creative. Not much he tried came off and made a hash of two, potentially game-ending passes late on, before squandering a chance to make it three himself.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Antony (6/10):

Rarely gave the ball away in the final third. Nothing too magical, though he did wind up his opponents.

    Wout Weghorst (7/10):

Ran the channels like an animal all game. Denied by a wonderful Karius save just before the break and completed a nice lay-off just before the second goal.

    Marcus Rashford (7/10):

United were looking to release him at every opportunity and he eventually forced a goal when his shot deflected off Botman and over Karius. His astounding recent form continues.

    Subs & Manager

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka (7/10):

Solid after replacing Dalot. Will be interesting to see if he can become first choice after improving so drastically under Ten Hag.

    Marcel Sabitzer (6/10):

Kept the pressure on Newcastle as they searched for an equaliser.

    Scott McTominay (6/10):

His height was helpful in the penalty box.

    Jadon Sancho (N/A):

Not enough time to make an impact.

    Harry Maguire (N/A):

Nice of Ten Hag to give his captain a run out in the closing stages.

    Erik ten Hag (9/10):

Told his side to release Rashford early in the first half – to decent effect. Smartly removed any players on a booking from the fray. The first United manager to lift a trophy since Jose Mourinho.

15 fun facts about Paul Pogba

Everything you need to know about French superstar Paul Pogba!

Paul Pogba is a French professional football player who currently plays as a central midfielder for Juventus and the France national team. Born on March 15, 1993, in Lagny-sur-Marne, France, Pogba is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, known for a rare mix of technical ability, range of passing, physicality, ball-winning abilities, and creativity on the pitch.

Pogba began his career at the age of six playing for local club US Roissy-en-Brie. He later joined US Torcy, from where the rough diamond was scouted by Le Havre AC. In 2009, Pogba joined Manchester United's youth academy and quickly made a name for himself as a highly-prodigious talent. He made his first-team debut in 2011 but struggled to establish himself in the squad.

In 2012, Pogba left the northern England club after his contract expired, having only made seven appearances as a substitute. He joined Juventus, who only had to pay £800,000 to secure his services.

At Juventus, he became an integral part of the team, completing a wonderful midfield alongside legends Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio. He enjoyed a trophy-laden four-year stint with the Italian giants, helping them win four consecutive Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia twice between 2012 and 2016, as well as reaching the UCL final in 2014/15. Pogba was also named the Serie A Footballer of the Year in 2013 and 2014 and was included in the UEFA Team of the Year in 2015.

His performances were so good that Manchester United — the very same club that released him — forked out a then world-record fee of £89 million to prize him away from Turin in 2018. He was 23 and had been named young player of the tournament at the previous World Cup. He was a rising star, the type of player and leader who was expected to pull United out of their post-Alex Ferguson rut.

It all started so positively for Pogba back at Manchester United. In his first season, he played alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic and helped them win the League Cup and the Europa League, while also moving the Red Devils to a second-place league finish and a return to Champions League action.

However, it all turned sour towards the end of his second stint at United. He has also been criticised for his performances, while some fans and pundits have accused him of not living up to his potential and being inconsistent on and off the pitch.

After another underwhelming season in 2021/22, he left Old Trafford at the end of his contract in the summer of 2022 to rejoin Juventus on a free transfer. He has played just twice for the Italian giants since moving to Turin, with his first season back in Italy largely plagued by various injury problems.

For France, he was one of the driving forces of France's 2018 World Cup win, playing a crucial role in the midfield alongside N'Golo Kante. He was once again a key player for France at Euro 2020 and has made 91 appearances for France, scoring 11 goals but he missed the 2022 World Cup through injury.

Here are 15 fun facts about Pogba you need to know!

  • Nicknamed 'Paul the Octopus' 🌐 🐙

When he played in Italy first time around, Paul got a nickname ‘Il Polpo’ which translates to 'Paul the Octopus'. This is because he has a lanky frame and long legs to control the ball and keep it in possession. His strides and legs are as powerful as an octopus' tentacles.

    Idolises Andrea Pirlo

Paul Pogba has spoken extensively about how much he looks up to and has learned from Andrea Pirlo, an Italy and Juventus legend. Pirlo and Pogba played together during his first stint at Juventus, where Pirlo was an experienced midfielder and Pogba was a rising star. Pogba has often mentioned Pirlo as one of his idols, praising him for his exceptional passing ability, vision, and composure on the ball.

The 30-year-old has even tried to adopt some of the principles of Pirlo's playing style, including his long-range passing and ability to control the tempo of the game. Pogba has also credited Pirlo for helping him become a better player and develop his skills as a midfielder.

In an interview, Pogba said, "I learned a lot from Pirlo. He was an example for me, not just as a player but as a person too. I watched him all the time in training and in matches, trying to learn from him."

  • Raised by a single 'super mum'

Often referred to as 'super mum', Yeo Moriba is recognised for making a number of sacrifices for her children as she raised her three sons single-handedly after she divorced from her husband Fassou Antoine Pogba, in 1996. Yeo brought her three boys alone on France's little council house, and was the driving force behind her three sons' footballing careers.

Pogba has in the past admitted that his mother is his greatest source of inspiration. During an interview with Esquire in 2017, the Frenchman said his mother is his first girlfriend.

Yeo holds a passion for the sport as well, and now serves as an ambassador with the Guinea FA. She even founded a football club in Guinea and used to be the captain of the Guinea women's national team.

Florentin, who plays as centre-back, has endured a journeyman career around Europe – playing in seven countries including England, Wales and Scotland.

He's currently plying his trade for Indian Super League club ATK Mohun Bagan (renamed as Mohun Bagan Super Giants) while Matthias last played for French fourth-tier outfit ASM Belfort. Of course, Paul is the most famous out of the three.

Nice will hope for big performances from the likes of Kasper Schmeichel and Terem Moffi if they are to get a result, while the experience of players such as Aaron Ramsey could be crucial.

The biggest absence for PSG is, of course, Neymar, who is out of action for the remainder of the 2022-23 season due to an ankle injury. Presnel Kimpembe is another long-term absentee, with the defender expected to miss a portion of next season too.

There are concerns over Sergio Ramos' availability as the Spaniard resumes full training after a calf injury, but he could be involved. Having failed to hit the net in the last two games, PSG will require Kylian Mbappe, who has 19 league goals to his name, and Lionel Messi, who has scored 13, to add to their respective tallies.

England U21s player ratings vs Israel: Emile Smith Rowe can't stop scoring & Noni Madueke flops as Young Lions stroll to victory in second Euros game

The Young Lions progressed to the knockout stages of the European Under-21 Championship courtesy of a comfortable win on Sunday

Anthony Gordon and Emile Smith Rowe were the scorers as England beat Israel 2-0 to secure their place in the Under 21 European Championship quarter-finals on Sunday.

The Young Lions were dominant throughout the Group C encounter, but had a difficult time converting it into dangerous chances.

Morgan Gibbs-White was the architect of the victory, setting up Gordon with a fine cross early on and then putting it on a platter for Smith Rowe to secure the victory in the second period with his second of the competition.

GOAL rates England's players from Stadion Ramaz Shengelia…

  • Goalkeeper & Defence

    James Trafford (6/10):

Got down low to keep out a promising free kick but otherwise did not have a great deal to do.

    James Garner (7/10):

A solid performance at right-back, did well to contain the threat from Israel and support the attack.

    Levi Colwill (7/10):

Had a sound game in the heart of the back line.

    Taylor Harwood-Bellis (6/10):

Looked comfortable in the centre of defence against an Israel side that struggled to threaten.

    Ben Johnson (5/10):

Had a shaky performance, got booked and gave away a dangerous free kick at the end of the first half.

  • Midfield

    Emile Smith Rowe (7/10):

Grew into the game and fired in the decisive second goal just as Israel seemed to be gaining in confidence and bravery.

    Curtis Jones (6/10):

Did well to win the ball in midfield and play some simple passes to keep the ball in circulation.

    Angel Gomes (7/10):

A solid display deep in the England midfield with some smart moves.

    Morgan Gibbs White (8/10):

Put in a lovely cross for Gordon to nod in the opener and then teed up Smith Rowe for the second. A lively threat throughout and the Young Lions' best player.

  • Attack

    Anthony Gordon (7/10):

After having a goal disallowed, he netted the opener after 15 minutes with a fine header beyond the goalkeeper.

    Noni Madueke (5/10):

Had a quiet game as he found it difficult to influence England's attack as forward partner Gordon looked more dangerous. Squandered a great opportunity early in the second half.

    Cole Palmer (5/10):

Replaced the struggling Madueke but did not fare much better himself in an underwhelming display.

    Cameron Archer (6/10):

Was sent through for a great opportunity but failed to capitalise on it.

    Harvey Elliott (6/10):

Set up Archer for a chance with a nice through pass shortly after coming on.

    Oliver Skipp (5/10):

Did not make much of an impact after replacing Gomes.

    Jacob Ramsey (5/10):

On for the last 10 minutes but the game was winding down by then.

    Lee Carsley (7/10):

Timothy Weah the danger man! USMNT star shines but Juventus limp to disappointing draw with Bologna

Timothy Weah was one of Juventus' more dangerous players, but the Italian giants were unable to overcome Bologna on Sunday.

  • Weah creates danger
  • McKennie comes off bench
  • Juve settle for 1-1 draw

It wasn't the best day for Juventus, who saw their first home game of the Serie A season spoiled by a determined Bologna. After going down a goal in the first half, Juve were able to battle back with a goal of their own, having seen one chalked off earlier for offside. However, they couldn't quite find the second goal required to earn all three points.

Weah was key for Juve, providing a very good 82 minutes before being substituted, while his U.S. men's national team teammate, Weston McKennie, once again replaced him off the bench after being named as a substitute.

  • Getty Images

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Bologna jumped into a first half lead thanks to a goal from Lewis Ferguson, and you can't say they didn't deserve it. It was a relatively flat first half from Juve, who went into the dressing room deservedly trailing.

The hosts seemingly equalized early in the second half as Dusan Vlahovic was able to find the back of the net, but the goal was called back after Adrien Rabiot was deemed to have interfered in the play from an offside position.

Vlahovic, though, wasn't to be denied, as the Serbian headed home from a magnificent Samuel Illing-Junior cross to earn Juventus a point in their first home match.

  • Getty

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Weah put in a solid shift, but it seems clear that he's still very much in the adjustment phase at Juventus.

The American never really took any early opportunities to beat a man off the dribble, instead generally taking the safer options. The willingness to go at players comes with confidence, and Weah will need to build his in his new surroundings at Juve.

He's clearly on the right track, though, as he looked like an entirely different player as the game wore on. He had a dangerous second half, creating two chances and forcing a good save as Juve chased a goal. He likely deserved a goal or assist given his efforts on the day.

One thing to watch, though, is Weah's tendency to drift inside. He played centrally for large stretches of the match, moving into the middle of the field to receive the ball. That may have been a function of Massimiliano Allegri's tactics for the day, but it's also something to watch from a player that is generally known as a speedster able to get to the end line.

As for Weston McKennie, it appears that, at the moment, he's a backup. Juve started with Rabiot, Manuel Locatelli and Nicolo Fagioli in midfield, with Paul Pogba coming off the bench in the second half. McKennie has spelled Weah at wingback, definitely not his natural position, but he faces a real fight to get into that midfield.

  • Getty

    USMNT IMPACT

Weah looks set to be an important player for Juventus this season, having now started each of the club's first two matches. He clearly has already earned the coaching staff's trust, which is great news for the USMNT.

Heading into the upcoming international break, Weah will have every reason to be flying fairly high, having played himself into a consistent role with his club. He's never quite been a lockdown starter anywhere he's been, so it would be great for him to be exactly that at Juve.

For the U.S., it'll be interesting to watch how Weah switches from wingback to winger and vice-versa but, overall, as long as Weah's playing, the USMNT will be thrilled.

As for McKennie, we'll have to see how he fares in the coming days ahead of the end of the transfer window. He clearly has some part to play for Juve, but is that part big enough for a player expected to be a key starter for the USMNT? That remains to be seen.

  • GOAL'S RATING

    Tim Weah (7/10):

Pretty dangerous throughout, although far from perfect. Was definitely one of Juve's best players on the field as they struggled to breakdown Bologna for large stretches.

    Weston McKennie (N/A):

Came on fairly late with the game level. Had one solid sequence in the 86th minute, but wasn't quite able to create the danger needed to unlock Bologna.

'I'm sure Ryan enjoyed it' – Paul Mullin backed by Wrexham assistant boss to get back among the goals as he insists Red Dragons ignored presence of Hollywood co-owner Reynolds in win over Grimsby

Wrexham assistant manager Steve Parkin believes Ryan Reynolds will have “enjoyed” a winning return to Wales and is backing Paul Mullin to get goals.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

One of the Dragons’ famous co-owners was at SToK Racecourse on Saturday for a 3-0 victory over Grimsby. Reynolds, along with fellow Hollywood star Rob McElhenney, is a regular visitor to British shores, but saw Wrexham come unstuck against MK Dons when making their long-awaited return to the Football League back in August.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Parkin is pleased to have given Reynolds something to smile about this time around, despite placing little emphasis on his presence, saying of a fourth successive win for the Dragons across all competitions, via : “To be honest we don't pay much attention to that. We are comfortable with the cameras around the place now, we are used to the people here and we trust them. We just get on with our job. It is always nice to put a good display on when the owners are here and I am sure Ryan enjoyed it. But it is about just making sure you get those three points in the bag and keep climbing the table.”

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Paul Mullin, last season’s 47-goal top scorer, made his first start of the season against Grimsby after recovering from a punctured lung. He is yet to open his account for 2023-24, but Parkin believes that is a matter of time. He added: “When Paul first came back he was off the pace but he had a really good week training. For him to play the way he played, alright he has not scored but he got in tremendously good areas. We got some really good balls down the side to him and he was a real threat all day. The Grimsby centre-backs know they have been in a real game so we are delighted with his display. He is a confident lad in front of goal, he missed a couple but that won’t affect him, it never has done before. We are glad we have got him back and we are glad with the performance and the contribution from the whole squad which was really important.”
