A record Namibian total propelled by twin centuries from Stephan Baard and JP Kotze took them to a historic win over Hong Kong at Affies Park to clinch ODI status for the tournament hosts, the first time they will be playing one-day internationals since the 2003 World Cup.After sending Namibia in, Hong Kong’s bowling unit did well to restrict Namibia early as Jean Bredenkamp focused on seeing off the new ball before falling in the 15th over for 19. In cricket’s oldest rivalry, Canada won the battle but lost the war as a 40-run win over USA was soured by a final-over boundary struck by USA No. 11 Nosthush Kenjige that moved Canada below PNG on net run rate.USA’s chase of Canada’s 255 lost its way after the runout of Steven Taylor in the 29th over when he wound up at the same end as Jaskaran Malhotra after Malhotra changed his mind for a possible run pushed into the covers. Malhotra could not carry USA across the line to atone for the runout, driving Nikhil Dutta to extra cover for 50 to make it 159 for 4 in the 38th.After both set batsmen were gone, left-arm seamer Romesh Eranga capitalized to take three quick wickets to make it 191 for 7. After Karima Gore took a single off the third ball, Zafar tried to slip in a quicker ball to Kenjige but landed it too short, allowing Kenjige to cut behind point for a boundary. After Kenjige blocked out the last two balls, Zafar kicked the last delivery away in disgust knowing they had missed ODI status in spite of the win.The result took the shine off Navneet Dhaliwal’s century as the opener carried his bat all 50 overs to make 121. But Canada only scored one boundary during a crucial phase from the 41st through the 47th over as Dhaliwal pushed 10 singles off 12 balls in that stretch to go from 90 to 100 despite Canada having seven wickets in hand. Canada added 29 off the last three overs, but the lack of intent in the prior sequence cost them dearly in the end.

وألمح فان دايك بذلك إلى رغبته في اللعب على أعلى مستوى، من حيث النادي، من أجل الوصول إلى كأس العالم 2026 في أفضل مستوياته، ومن ثم قد يعني رغبته في تجديد عقده مع ليفربول.

وأضاف: “أنا إنسان، ولدي مشاعر أيضًا، تبدأ في التفكير في كل أنواع الأشياء، خاصة بعد مباراة مثل الإقصاء من قِبل إنجلترا في اللحظة الأخيرة، لا أعلم كيف تخطيت كل ذلك”.

وواصل: “بعد المباراة كنت محبطًا للغاية ومليئًا بالعاطفة، ربما بدا الأمر كما لو كانت آخر مباراة دولية لي، كانت لدي شكوك تلك الليلة وألمحت إلى ذلك”.

وأردف: “من الجيد جدًا أنني ذهبت في إجازة في اليوم التالي، وتمكنت من قضاء الوقت مع أطفالي وعائلتي، وهو أهم شيء في حياتي، تمكنت من فعل ذلك ثم هدأت الأمور بسرعة كبيرة”.

واستمر: “كان الموسم الماضي طويلاً ومكثفًا للغاية، بما في ذلك بطولة أوروبا، أركز على الفريق والأولاد كثيرًا، أحاول دائمًا التحدث وأنشغل باستمرار مع الجميع، لقد تحملت هذه المسؤولية لسنوات، بصفتي قائدًا، فإن الأمر يتعلق بالفريق أولاً ثم بنفسك”.

Rayudu reacts to his omission from India’s World Cup squad

A not-so-cryptic tweet from Ambati Rayudu has added to the public criticism of the decision to drop him for the World Cup.Rayudu was left out in favour of Vijay Shankar, who, in the words of the chief selector, brings “three dimensions” to the side. A day after the said selection, Rayudu tweeted: “Just ordered a new set of 3d glasses to watch the World Cup.” It was followed by a winking and a smiling emoji.It is rare for an India-contracted player to openly question selections – Karun Nair was reportedly disciplined the last time he spoke about them – let alone take to Twitter to make a sharp comment that can be seen as mocking a selector’s comments.India’s chairman of selectors MSK Prasad had said the final spot had eventually come down to Rayudu and Vijay. “After the Champions Trophy [in 2017], we have tried quite a few middle-order batsmen, which also includes Dinesh Karthik at that order, and we also tried Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey,” he said. “We did give a few more chances to Rayudu but what Vijay Shankar offers is three dimensions: apart from his batting, he can bowl; if the conditions are suitable, overcast, which we might encounter in England, he might bowl a bit and he’s a fantastic fielder.”Not long ago, in October 2018, captain Virat Kohli had all but anointed Rayudu India’s No.4 for the World Cup. “With Rayudu coming in and playing well in the Asia Cup, it’s about giving him enough game time till the World Cup so that the particular slot [No. 4] will be sorted for us,” Kohli had said. “The team felt there — and I also watched him — that he is designed to play that middle-order batsman’s role.”We feel that our middle order is more or less balanced now. We believe he is the right person to capitalise on that spot. He is experienced, and has won many games for his state and also in the IPL. He has a great ODI record already for India. Since that comment, India have played 18 matches, out of which Rayudu has been involved in 15. He is India’s fourth-highest run-getter over that period, averaging 42.18, striking at 85.6 runs per 100 balls, and ending the New Zealand tour as the highest run-getter. Among players that have played a minimum of 50 ODIs over their careers, Rayudu holds the fourth-highest average for India. Narrow it down to eight big oppositions, and he still is seventh-highest.Rayudu is not the only one frustrated with this decision. Many cricket experts have questioned his exclusion. “I think there should be no debate about Rishabh Pant’s exclusion but more about Ambati Rayudu,” Gautam Gambhir told PTI. “It is very, very unfortunate that someone averaging 48 in white-ball cricket, and is only 33, has been left out. That for me is more heart-breaking than any other selection decision.”I feel sorry for him as I was in a similar position in 2007, when they didn’t pick me, and I know how difficult it is not being picked for the World Cup. Ultimately, for any young kid, it is a childhood dream to be a part of the big event. So, I feel more sorry for Rayudu than any other cricketer who hasn’t been picked.”Former India spinner Murali Kartik pointed to a recency and aesthetics bias. “We always look at performances very close to the selection, and as I am very happy for Vijay Shankar, I feel for Ambati Rayudu, because for a while he has been your No. 4, he has got runs for you,” Kartik told ESPNcricinfo. “Yes, he has missed out on a few occasions as have other batsmen. But when you look at his record, and – you guys might dissect it a lot more – just to the naked eye, for me, I’ll look at him purely as a cricketer, in my team he has done everything right as a No. 4.”In the sense that there will be swords against him about him playing genuine fast bowling – I don’t think that’s a big issue, there are lots of people who will struggle against genuine fast bowling. It’s not Ambati Rayudu alone. He’s a very good player of spin as well in the middle order.””Somebody like an Ambati Rayudu, it’s not a question of looking convincing, it’s a matter of getting runs, and that’s exactly what it is,” Kartik went on to add. “And KL Rahul, he looks pleasing, he looks a million dollars – don’t get me wrong there, I’m a huge, huge fan of KL Rahul – but if he was so crucial, why wasn’t he playing in the last few months?”Why wasn’t he given a chance in the last few months? So, for me, six months ago this team should have been ready, saying, ‘Okay, these are the guys who are going, you don’t have to watch over your shoulder, just go and play the way you want to play, your spot is secure.’ For somebody to endorse that ‘this guy’s is my No. 4’ and he plays there, he gets runs, yes he’s going to miss out as do others, and then suddenly he gets dropped.”On the same ESPNCricinfo show, Deep Dasgupta said he wouldn’t have picked Rayudu, but he was not happy with the process followed. “It’s difficult to understand it completely, the whole process, where the team management comes out and says ‘he is our No. 4’ and now he isn’t there,” Dasgupta said. “This is over a span of a month-and-a-half, two months. But I also understand why Vijay Shankar is there.”It is unfortunate that Rayudu is not there. But in my team, Rayudu wasn’t there, because as Kartik touched upon that point, that at times he doesn’t look too convincing. Again, if you look at the numbers, then Rayudu is far, far ahead of the other No. 4 players that have been tried out. No questions about that as far as numbers are concerned. But the convincing part of it, I’m not completely convinced when I see him bat.”

West Bromwich Albion will look to further solidify their playoff spot with a win on their travels to Norwich City today, with Carlos Corberan's Baggies confident going into the trip to Norfolk after a 4-1 victory against Blackburn Rovers last match.

Still, the Spanish boss in the Hawthorns dug-out won't want his players to rest on their laurels and be content with what they have already – the West Midlands outfit in danger of slipping out of the top six if any complacency sets in.

With that in mind, Corberan could field this lineup for the game at Carrow Road today with two potential changes on the cards…

1 GK – Alex Palmer

Leading the way with 12 clean sheets in the Championship this season, Illan Meslier just behind with ten to his name, Alex Palmer is a shoo-in for a start away at Norwich today.

In the reverse fixture versus the Canaries on Boxing Day, Palmer made three crucial saves to shut out Norwich to help the hosts win 1-0.

2 RB – Darnell Furlong

Darnell Furlong was solid throughout the comprehensive 4-1 win over Blackburn last weekend, winning six of his eight duels in the emphatic victory.

The dependable West Brom number two registered four key passes from the back against the Riversiders, not content with just sitting back and fulfilling his typical defensive duties with a forward-thinking approach preferred.

3 CB – Kyle Bartley

Kyle Bartley was also strong against the Riversiders in the confident win, even notching up an assist for Tom Fellows to open the scoring at the Hawthorns.

The former Arsenal man was also aerially dominant in the victory, bullying the Blackburn attackers all game in an imposing display with 100% of his aerial duels successfully won.

4 CB – Caleb Taylor

Looking at how well Tom Fellows has done since coming into the team as an exuberant 20-year-old talent, Corberan could switch things up at the back with young centre-back Caleb Taylor potentially preferred over Cedric Kipre.

Kipre was poor during the Blackburn win – winning just one duel – with Taylor bettering that total with two won despite only being on the pitch for 13 minutes.

5 LB – Conor Townsend

Conor Townsend was way off the pace against Blackburn without being detrimental to his team, failing to win any of his ground duels which allowed attackers such as Jack Garrett for the visitors to shine in patches.

Yet, with Corberan faithful to the 30-year-old at left-back this season so far, the number three should be retained regardless of this off-day.

Playing versus Norwich last month, the defender was far more bright and lively with Corberan hoping this version of Townsend reappears for the trip to the Canaries – amassing two key passes in the 1-0 win from the back.

6 RM – Tom Fellows

With Grady Diangana still present at the African Cup of Nations and out of action for the Baggies as a result, Fellows has really stepped up to the mark in the Congolese winger's absence with some sterling displays from down the right-hand channel.

The 20-year-old homegrown West Brom product excelled against a leaky Blackburn defence, firing four shots on the Riversiders net with one of those efforts trickling in to open the scoring in the 4-1 win.

A livewire throughout for Corberan's promotion-chasers, the Baggies boss will want Fellows to be similarly electric against Norwich to catch a similarly susceptible Canaries defence off-guard.

7 CM – Okay Yokuşlu

Okay Yokuşlu will also be retained for the clash today against David Wagner's hosts, despite the 29-year-old central midfielder not exactly setting the world alight against Blackburn.

Yet, the Turkish number 35 has shone in other games this season away from this lacklustre individual display.

The 29-year-old notably impressed when West Brom got the better of Leeds United at the end of December 1-0, launching himself into duels and tackles aplenty with four tackles and six duels won.

Corberan will hope Yokuşlu just experienced a blip against Blackburn – passively winning just 50% of his duels – and can return back to his best at Carrow Road.

8 CM – Alex Mowatt

Whilst Yokuşlu is prone to sitting back and doing the dirty work in the central midfield duo, Alex Mowatt is far more comfortable venturing forward and setting up his teammates with countless chances to score.

Managing two key passes in the Blackburn win, the former Leeds United man was unplayable at points when the Baggies previously faced off against Norwich in December.

The number 27 dominated proceedings centrally with a staggering 127 touches managed, successfully completing 100 passes. Could the 5 foot 10 midfielder pick up an assist this swagger deserves today?

9 LM – Adam Reach

Starting three games in a row recently after being plagued with a horrific streak of injuries, Adam Reach has proven his worth to the West Brom cause playing at left wing in the absence of injury-stricken Matt Phillips.

The 30-year-old's most impactful display to date since coming into the first-team fold was against Blackburn, managing one key pass from the hour he featured on the Hawthorns turf.

Not quite ready for a full 90 minutes just yet, Reach's steady presence down the left flank could still help the Baggies when Norwich attack at will today – the ex-Sheffield Wednesday midfielder completing three interceptions last match when Blackburn infrequently forayed forward.

10 CAM – Jed Wallace

The second potential change to the West Brom starting lineup could see John Swift axed for Jed Wallace to come in at the number ten spot, the ex-Reading midfielder poor even despite the convincing three points his confident teammates managed to pick up.

Amassing just 34 touches in the contest before being hauled off the pitch by Corberan on the hour mark, with one off-target effort also notched up, the time could be right to reintroduce Jed Wallace to the first-team fold after an injury layover had limited his recent minutes.

Able to play anywhere across the forward positions behind Brandon Thomas-Asante, Wallace's three goals and three assists this season when played mean he could slot into this spot effortlessly and help the Baggies secure another big win in the process with his creative powers.

Labelled as having an "unbelievable" delivery by Sheffield United defender Jack O'Connell last season, Thomas-Asante will be chomping at the bit if Wallace is preferred over Swift knowing the former Millwall's man expertise on the ball can help him become even more prolific.

Newcastle United are reportedly the front-runners to make a £34m offer for a talented European player – one who is admired by rap superstar Jay-Z.

The Magpies know the importance of trying to strike some late business in the January transfer window, giving their squad an injection of life, amid numerous injury problems this season. A host of difference players have been linked with boosting Eddie Howe's options and giving them the best possible chance of finishing strong in the Premier League this season, with midfield a key area of focus because of Joelinton's injury and Sandro Tonali's suspension.

Everton star Amadou Onana and Bournemouth ace Philip Billing are two players who have emerged as options for Newcastle before the end of the month, and the same applies to Chelsea's Conor Gallagher, with all three representing good choices for the Magpies but FFP constraints making life difficult.

There is also believed to be interest in highly-rated Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey, although the Villans are likely to be desperate to keep hold of such a talented player. At the other end of the age spectrum, experienced Tottenham stalwart Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has attracted the attention of Newcastle, too, in what would be a surprising but perhaps more affordable short-term signing.

Newcastle want Federico Dimarco

It's not only in midfield that injuries have struck the Magpies, and according to Inter Live [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are favourites to sign Inter Milan left-back Federico Dimarco, with the Magpies considering an offer of €40m (£34m) for his services.

It is believed that the Serie A outfit want more in the region of €50-60m for his services, but may have to accept that a lower amount will be enough to sell him. Manchester United are mentioned as being interested in the past, but it is Newcastle who appear to be pushing the most to get a deal over the line.

Dimarco could be a really good signing by Howe this month, at a time when more competition is needed for Dan Burn at left-back, even though Lewis Hall represents a good long-term option.

The 26-year-old is now a 16-time capped Italy international, scoring twice for his country in that time, and he has registered 22 assists in 123 appearances for Inter. This really highlights the attacking quality that he possesses, and he could provide more natural width and goal threat down the left flank than the more limited Burn.

A fim de garantir a sustentabilidade das operações do Vasco, a diretoria cruz-maltina deu início a uma reestruturação administrativa “efetiva e imediata”, conforme publicada em comunicado oficial. Entre as medidas, estão a redução da folha de pagamento em mais de R$ 40 milhões por ano, com o desligamento de 186 funcionários, o fechamento temporário da sede do Calabouço e a mudança da sede administrativa para o Centro do Rio de Janeiro.

No comunicado, assinado pela Diretoria Administrativa, a frágil situação financeira do clube é detalhada e serve como justificativa para as mudanças que já estão sendo realizadas, assim como a perda de receitas de TV e a diminuição dos valores de premiação com a queda para a Série B de 2021.

– Nosso endividamento líquido, atualmente girando em torno de R$720MM, encontra-se em níveis muito elevados e concentrados em curto prazo, a inadimplência generalizada com fornecedores torna o Vasco refém de penhoras judiciais, os atrasos de salários de atletas e funcionários se tornaram rotineiros, a antecipação de recursos, com comprometimento de receitas futuras, foi usada indiscriminadamente nos últimos anos e hoje é uma possibilidade praticamente exaurida – diz trecho da nota oficial, que segue:

– Soma-se a esse quadro a perda de receitas de TV, e a diminuição dos valores de premiação da CBF proveniente do ranking nacional de clubes, e chegamos a uma perda de cerca de R$100MM em receita em 2021 – segue a explicação.

A Sede Administrativa do Vasco passará a funcionar no Centro do Rio de Janeiro, em imóvel cedido por comodato, sem a cobrança de aluguel. Em São Januário, permanecem o departamento de futebol de base, departamento de patrimônio, departamento de esportes olímpicos e paralímpicos, departamento de comunicação (Secretaria), o Colégio Vasco da Gama, e o Centro de Memória. O departamento de futebol profissional e o departamento de desportos náuticos seguem em suas atuais sedes no CT do Almirante e sede náutica da Lagoa, respectivamente.

Confira, abaixo, outras medidas anunciadas pela Diretoria Administrativa do Vasco, presidida por Jorge Salgado, em comunicado nesta sexta-feira:

Fechamento temporário da sede do Calabouço

“Seguindo a diretriz de sustentabilidade financeira em todas as áreas do Clube, a partir da próxima terça-feira (16/03) a sede do Calabouço estará fechada temporariamente. O período servirá para a realização de uma análise estrutural completa e reformas que visam melhorar a segurança e a qualidade do atendimento ao sócio. O restaurante e a loja Gigante da Colina permanecerão em funcionamento no local.”

Sustentabilidade dos Esportes Olímpicos e Paralímpicos

“Pautados pela responsabilidade e buscando a viabilidade de suas operações, não é mais possível ao Vasco atuar no fomento aos esportes olímpicos de forma insustentável, ficando determinada a descontinuação temporária das modalidades esportivas que estejam deficitárias no ano de 2021. É indispensável que o Vasco da Gama se reestruture para a busca de aportes direcionados e projetos incentivados para a construção de um projeto esportivo consistente. O Remo, esporte fundador do clube, e as modalidades paralímpicas serão mantidos com apoio financeiro de vascaínos até que projetos incentivados sejam implantados.”

Consultorias financeiras e de gestão

“Comunicamos publicamente a contratação de empresas de consultoria financeira e de gestão como parceiros no processo de reestruturação administrativa do Vasco da Gama, visando a maior eficiência na recuperação do Clube, com foco na gestão e na redução e renegociação de dívidas.

O presidente da Diretoria Administrativa, Jorge Salgado, deu conhecimento das medidas ora anunciadas aos presidentes de Poderes do Clube, e o mesmo encaminhará solicitação aos presidentes do Conselho de Beneméritos, do Conselho Fiscal e do Conselho Deliberativo para que, no momento oportuno, seja feita uma apresentação da atual situação em que se encontra o nosso Vasco da Gama, a fim de reforçar a transparência a tudo o que está sendo feito.”
