Moonda: Not many options in bowling attack for South Africa

Big PictureThis series is unlikely to be archived among the most compelling of our times but it is an important one. It pits a traditionally strong side that has been going through years of transition against an emerging one that has been steadily building over the same period. Unfortunately, the Potchefstroom Test only reinforced what we already suspect about what a contest between these two sides can provide.In Test terms, there is still a massive gap between South Africa and Bangladesh, even with most of South Africa’s first-choice attack injured. In South African conditions, even those that are less South African than usual, that gap is only widened. Perhaps the only new thing we learnt is that Bangladesh have a good chance of transferring their home improvements abroad but they need to back themselves a little more.Bangladesh showed the best and worst of their batting in Potchefstroom. After achieving their highest total in South Africa, 320, which was only six short of their highest against South Africa anywhere, they were bundled out in the second innings for their lowest against South Africa. Their score of 90 was also the first time they have been dismissed for under 100 in a decade. If anything, they will want to set that right even though the Bloemfontein pitch is set to be more challenging.South Africa should not really want it easier but they do want groundsmen around the country to buy into the idea that when teams from the subcontinent tour, they must be presented with pace and bounce. Even though that will also ask questions of the home line-up, which has battled for consistency in the last year, it is now becoming more about the attack.Kagiso Rabada, who will play his 22nd Test, is the most experienced bowler in the squad, with Wayne Parnell and Duanne Olivier only in possession of nine caps between them. Andile Phehlukwayo has played one Test and Dane Paterson, if he plays, will be on debut. As much as South Africa want to show dominance, this series is also about finding a second wave of bowlers to replace the previous pack. Galego é canhoto e consegue desempenhar a função clássica de armador, mostrando também força para chegar na área adversária e concluir. O treinador do time, Élder Campos, indica que a saída é iminente, mas que torce para a permanência dele, pelo menos até o fim da Série A2.

With Mohammed Kudus a long-term target of theirs, perhaps they will now be incensed to simply pay his £40m valuation, especially with West Ham United looming as they await the outcome of a potential Lucas Paqueta exit.

How good is Mohammed Kudus?

Although they had no skin in the deal that collapsed very recently, it will still be a blow to see such a fine option removed as a potential signing for the foreseeable future.

Despite being so young, the tricky winger arguably had the perfect skillset to thrive under Arteta, with an impossibly high ceiling that he certainly would have shattered when surrounded by other stars at the Emirates.

However, he is not the only option who remains young, hungry, skilful and available this summer.

It could even be argued that, given his vast experience despite being only 23 years old, Kudus even represents an upgrade on the former Reading star.

After all, he has been a mainstay for the historic Amsterdam club, even posting nine Champions League appearances too.

To compare their two recent campaigns as well and it becomes easy to see why the Ghana international might offer far more than Olise. Especially considering he scored an impressive 18 times across all competitions, assisting a further seven having featured in no less than three different attacking roles.

The Eagles star, meanwhile, could only muster two Premier League goals alongside his admirable 11 assists. Undoubtably a creative threat, it could therefore be argued that he remains slightly more one-dimensional than the World Cup star.

FBref help to further emphasise the gulf in quality, as when compared to other wingers across Europe, Kudus ranks in the top 2% for non-penalty goals per 90, the top 4% for total shots per 90, the top 1% for pass completion per 90 and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90.

It is no surprise to see him branded a "starboy" by former teammate Calvin Bassey, with the sky truly being the limit for the enigmatic maverick.

His competition instead showcases a penchant for the defensive, starring by sitting in the top 9% for blocks per 90 and the top 15% for interceptions per 90, via FBref.

Although Olise is more well-versed in English football, the potential upside that his alternative brings somewhat makes the failed deal a blessing in disguise.

Arteta must now act quickly to ward off the competition and secure such an impressive upgrade.

From playing Cricket Max as a teenager to being a veteran plying his trade in T20 leagues these days, former New Zealand allrounder James Franklin has had first-hand experience of the shorter format’s transition in the last 20 years.”When I first started my career a wee while ago, Cricket Max was the game and, really, from Cricket Max, T20 cricket evolved,” Franklin said to ESPNcricinfo. “Martin Crowe was the founding father of the short format. T20 wasn’t the game he came up with but he came up with Max Cricket.”It was all double scores going straight, so that was the name of the game; you hit straight because that’s where you get full value for your team. I think it helped New Zealand cricketers come to the fore in terms of T20 cricket as well. We learned how to play the shorter format, which is why I think there are many good T20 players from New Zealand.”Franklin has built himself as a successful Kiwi export in other domestic competitions, particularly in T20s. In his second season for Rajshahi Kings in the BPL, Franklin has so far made 26 not out and 35, on both occasions looking to give his side a final flourish.Having played his last international match in June 2013, Franklin has mostly played through the English summer and also in the T20 leagues back home in New Zealand and, BPL aside, in the IPL, CPL and PSL.He said that adjusting to the team’s needs is one of the keys to being a T20 professional, to be able to understand the direction and dynamics of the group and then applying yourself as needed. It has become easier to fit into teams as he gets older, he said, because of his acquired experience.”You just have to get a feel for the group you come into, and culturally what’s different about each team, trying to grasp and understand the culture of the team and buy into what the captain, coach and the leaders in that team are trying to do.”Now being a more senior player, it is probably a bit easier to fit into a new team environment because you get experience of different teams through your career. I have had bit of experience playing in the subcontinent by playing in the IPL. A big part of my role now is to try to help the younger local players.”Franklin believes T20s can help players overcome two of cricket’s fundamental problems: having a career outside international cricket, and playing better in overseas conditions.”It is a global game now in terms of player movement. A lot of players can have their career now just playing T20s around the world. It is a true international game. I think we are seeing benefits with the skills that the players are being able to show in all conditions. We were used to seeing subcontinent players struggling in Australia or South Africa and vice versa. This is slowly being eradicated because players are spending more time in foreign conditions. They are used to playing on different surfaces so their skills get better. I think that has been the biggest thing to come out of it, I guess, the globalisation of the game of cricket.”Franklin said that the next step in such player movements would be for more subcontinent players to take their talents to South Africa and Australia. “England players were allowed to play in the IPL. They [the ECB] see a benefit to letting them go play, because they learn skills, they are playing in high pressure situations. The next step is obviously for more Bangladeshi, Indian players to go and play in competitions in South Africa and Australia. Then it truly becomes a global game.”

A partida

Os primeiros dez minutos foram de alternância em Pituaçu. Em alguns momentos o Bahia foi melhor e em outros Atlético-GO. Mas nenhum dos dois times conseguia levar perigo.

A partir dos 13 minutos de partida o Atlético-GO passou a mandar no jogo. Renato Kayzer, Nicolas e Janderson tiveram ótimas chances para marcar, mas a bola insistia em não entrar.

Aos 39 minutos, o Dragão teve mais uma chance de marcar em falta na entrada na área. O goleiro Jean bateu a falta, mas a bola acertou a barreira. O rebote voltou para ele, que chutou de primeira e marcou o seu primeiro gol na carreira: 1 a 0.

Sem muita inspiração, o Tricolor não conseguia criar oportunidades. Enquanto isso, o Dragão mandava no jogo e ainda quase ampliou o placar no finalzinho da etapa inicial. Nicolas soltou a bomba em cobrança de falta da entrada da área, Douglas fez uma grande defesa e salvou o Bahia.

O segundo tempo começou com o Bahia marcando forte, principalmente a saída de bola do Atlético-GO. Mas o Dragão conseguia sair tocando com tranquilidade e controlar muito bem o ímpeto do Tricolor.

Aos 11 minutos, o Bahia finalmente conseguiu criar sua primeira oportunidade na partida. Rossi desceu pela direita e cruzou rasteiro, mas João Victor estava ligado e afastou o perigo.

O Tricolor seguiu tentando criar oportunidades, mas sem levar perigo algum à meta do goleiro Jean. Quando o Dragão tinha a bola, ele ia cozinhando o time do Bahia e fazendo o tempo passar.

Aos trancos e barrancos, o Bahia foi tentando e conseguiu já no final do jogo criar duas boas chances para marcar. Mas Marco Antonio foi travado nos dois lances.

Ainda no finalzinho do jogo, o zagueiro Juninho foi expulso e enterrou qualquer chance do Bahia de empatar o jogo.
