Just needed to 'walk in' to change dressing room mood – Shastri

What did Ravi Shastri have to do to the dressing room atmosphere after Anil Kumble’s exit? “Nothing had changed, no special buttons I had to press. It was just that one play button, and off you went,” he said

This team has already done what big names could not – Shastri

The role of a head coach in the Indian cricket team has never been as ambiguous as it has been since the first murmurs of trouble between Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble began. Kumble himself didn’t have much experience as a coach, but in the one year he spent in the job, he came across as somebody actively involved in working with bowlers, passing on some tips to batsmen, playing a role in strategising and also keeping an eye on the supply line. However, as each passing day conspired to get Ravi Shastri back as the coach, you wondered what India wanted in their coach. Now there are specialist bowling, batting and fielding coaches in the side. If Shastri had not picked them himself, the Cricket Advisory Committee would have enforced through Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid. What exactly does Shastri do then?”My role is to be in charge of the entire support staff, and to make sure that we get the boys in some great mental space to go out and express themselves with nothing else on their minds but to go out and play a brand of cricket which you have seen India play over the last three years: positive and fearless,” Shastri said, two days before the SSC Test. When asked how exactly he does that, Shastri shot back: “That is a skill, that is why I am here and you are not there.”Later he said, though, that all he had to do to achieve the right atmosphere in the dressing room was “walk in”. “That was enough”It is instructive that a press conference two days before the middle Test of a series revolved more around Shastri’s role in the team than around the Test or the series. “For me, I don’t carry any baggage,” Shastri said about the winning start in Galle. “For me it was like walking into the dressing room as I had left it. Nothing had changed, and no special buttons I had to press. It was just that one play button, and off you went.”The boys were fantastic in the last Test match but what we are striving for is improvement. There are still areas to improve from the last game. And we have discussed that and what we want from this team as a unit collectively is consistency. Not just where you are good in one game and totally the opposite in the other. Your levels of consistency have to be high.”Shastri was even asked how he makes sure he is not “overbearing” and balancing out the need to speak to players and giving them their space. “When you have been around the game for 37 years, you probably learnt a little bit,” Shastri said. “So that experience is very handy for me in knowing exactly how to deal with the players.”Just walk in, press the play button and using his 37-year experience (as player and commentator), coaching India sounds easy. He was asked how easy it exactly was. “I have been manager, director, now I am head coach, and it’s the same role,” Shastri said. “Absolutely the same role. So there is nothing that I have to change. The fact that you played the game and watched the game for long periods of time without a break does help. So you know what’s contemporary and what’s happening at the moment and you relate with people in that fashion.”I don’t think at this level coaching is needed. At this level, it is all about fine-tuning and getting the blokes in a good mental space to go out and play the game. They know they have reached here because they are good. At times you might need to just fine-tune them a bit because the amount of cricket that’s being played you might just get into the odd bad habit without you realising it. That’s where the experience of having played, probably having watched you can pick it up and pass on the message.”Shastri also said this team had achieved what many Indian greats had failed to achieve. “They have already done things that a lot of Indian teams and a lot of big names couldn’t do in their careers,” Shastri said. “Like, for example, to win a series here [in Sri Lanka] for 20 years. A lot of big names have played for 20 years, they have come to Sri Lanka many times, and they have never won a series. But they [this team] have done that. They have won a one-day series in 20 years, which a lot of teams haven’t done.”This team is used to doing things that a lot of other teams haven’t done, and that too overseas. Forget Australia, I am not even touching the Australia tour, so when you say overseas like South Africa, England, it is a lot of tough cricket coming up. I see it as an opportunity. I am very positive here that this team can do things that probably no other Indian team has done.”

Celtic Can Forget Jota By Signing "Exciting" Parkhead Target

Aside from Celtic losing treble-winning coach, Ange Postecoglou, arguably the biggest setback of the summer so far for the Parkhead outfit was the departure of wing wizard, Jota, with the Portuguese gem having sealed a £25m move to Saudi Arabian side, Al Ittihad.

Despite being able to rake in a handsome profit on the 24-year-old – having signed him on a permanent deal for roughly £6.4m the year prior – that exit has left the Hoops without a player that was crucial to their domestic dominance under Postecolgou over the last two seasons.

Having initially snapped up the Lisbon native from Benfica on a season-long loan deal in the summer of 2021, the fleet-footed ace went on to score 13 goals and provide 14 assists in all competitions during his debut season in Glasgow, before adding a further 27 goal involvements last season.

Former Celtic winger Jota.

With an overall tally of 54 goals and assists in just 83 games for the Old Firm giants in total, it is fair to say that Jota certainly made his mark at the club, hence the need to find a suitable replacement for the forthcoming campaign.

Who could replace Jota at Celtic?

Rodgers and co have, of course, already strengthened their attack with the signings of Marco Tilio and Hyunjun Yang, although further forward additions could be in store, amid prior reports that the Bhoys have also shown an interest in another South Korean sensation – Ji-sung Eom.

As per the Daily Record, Celtic are said to have been scouting the 21-year-old Gwangju starlet of late, albeit with his current side seemingly adamant that they will not sell the emerging sensation before the end of the K League 1 season later this year.

As the piece also notes, however, the Hoops could strike a deal that would see Eom spend the next six months on loan back at his current club, before eventually making the move to Scotland in the New Year.

Either way, if Rodgers can strike a deal for the 5 foot 10 dynamo in the near future, it could allow Celtic to forget all about that man Jota, such is the Korean's undoubted potential.

Who is Ji-sung Eom?

As stated above, trying to fill the void left behind by Jota will be no small feat, although, in Eom, the Scottish champions could potentially find a worthy candidate, following the wide man's impact in his homeland in recent times.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

Such is the young forward's quality, he has even been dubbed "one of the most exciting young talents in Korean football" by journalist Jason Lee, having scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 80 games in all competitions for Gwangju.

While not quite at the same level as Jota's return for Celtic, Eom has been in fine form in the current campaign with two goals and two assists in just 15 league outings, having made a smooth transition to life in the top tier – after bagging nine goals in 28 K League 2 games last year.

A player who typically operates on the left wing, like Jota, the South Korean U22 international also mirrors the Al Ittihad ace with regard to his defensive output, having averaged 1.7 tackles and interceptions per game last season, while Jota averaged 1.6 in that regard in 2022/23.

Also described as a truly "underrated" talent – in the words of scout Ali Can Kutlu – Eom has the potential to explode over the coming years, with the hope being that his development can continue under the watchful eye of Rodgers.

Losing Jota is undoubtedly a source of real frustration, although the former Celtic Park hero could be quickly forgotten about if a new figure steps up to take his place on the flanks.

'Worst series loss of my career' – Chandimal

Not once could Sri Lanka push a Test match to the fifth day and the new captain Dinesh Chandimal felt quite badly about that

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Pallekele14-Aug-20172:49

Can’t give excuses for defeat inside three days – Chandimal

In a year of woe for Sri Lanka, another captain has labeled another series loss the worst of his career. Dinesh Chandimal, in only his second series at the helm, lamented the 0-3 beating at India’s hands. Barely a month ago, Angelo Mathews had said the ODI series loss to Zimbabwe had been “one of the lowest points” of his own career, and not long after he ended up stepping down.Chandimal’s despair is understandable, because never before have Sri Lanka lost 0-3 at home to India. Two of India’s victories came by an innings, and the other – in Galle – was their biggest victory in terms of runs. And where India tallied a whopping 1949 across four innings at an average of 60.90 per wicket, Sri Lanka managed 1421 in six innings at an average of 24.92. All four of the highest wicket-takers, and three of the top four run-scorers, were also from the visiting side. It was, in short, an almighty hiding.”This was the toughest series in eight years playing international cricket, no doubt,” Chandimal said. “The reason is that we were not able to take the games to five days. The previous two were four-day Tests, and this was a three-day Test. Since I’ve been in this team, this is the worst series loss I’ve experienced.”The series has seen paltry crowds, especially in Galle and Colombo, perhaps due to the one-sided nature of the contest. Attendance was slightly better in Pallekele, but the ground was still mostly empty.Where fan support and satisfaction had been extremely high at the end of the 3-0 Test victory over Australia last year, it has diminished alarmingly over the past eight months, in which Sri Lanka were defeated badly in South Africa, lost a Test to Bangladesh, and crashed out of the Champions Trophy. Chandimal apologised for the team’s performance this series.”I want to convey our disappointment to all of our fans,” he said. “To all Sri Lankan fans here and away from home, we are very disappointed about our performance. As captain, I would like to take the responsibility. The fans have always supported us. They encourage us always. Today we saw that although we were losing, people were still applauding us. That is what the team needs now. We cannot let the players be mentally down. We are getting the process right. We might not get results soon, but we are confident that the future looks good.”Chandimal did, however, cite injuries as a possible reason for the defeat. Sri Lanka lost batting allrounder Asela Gunaratne in the first session of the series, then had seamer Nuwan Pradeep break down towards the end of the first day at the SSC. Suranga Lakmal was ruled out from the second Test onwards, and Rangana Herath sat out the dead rubber with a stiff back.”I would say what has especially gone wrong is injuries,” Chandimal said. “When we played the Australia series didn’t have any injuries. Everyone did their best. When we came to this series there are so many injuries – Nuwan Pradeep, Suranga Lakmal, Rangana Herath. They played some really good cricket in the last six months. That’s the main issue. You can’t give excuses. As youngsters you have to stand up and perform.”Sri Lanka’s pace attack had, in fact, been laid low by injury during that Australia series too. Lakmal had been ruled out before the first Test, and Pradeep only played one game, and Dushmantha Chameera – who was the third seamer in line at the time – was also out of contention with a stress fracture.Elsewhere, another worrying sign for Sri Lanka, was the failure of their senior batsmen. Upul Tharanga and Angelo Mathews hit only one half-century apiece across six innings – both of those on the flattest track of the series. Chandimal himself managed only a high score of 48 and an average of 24 in four innings (though in mitigation, he had suffered from pneumonia the week before the SSC Test).”Consistency has been a huge issue this series,” Chandimal said. “Some players cannot perform well in every series. As seniors, you have to do well, and then the youngsters will follow.”Angelo and I couldn’t get amidst the runs, and we take a lot of blame for that. But we were trying very hard in the middle – even today – and we’ve been training very hard. I have lot of faith the seniors will come back strongly when we take on Pakistan.”

Newcastle Could Supplement Isak With "Incredible" £30m Maverick

Newcastle United have bolstered their attacking ranks with the signing of Harvey Barnes this summer, while addressing the need for a first-rate midfielder by swooping for Sandro Tonali.

The respective signings have cost Eddie Howe's side just short of £100m, but given the club's affluence and imminent Champions League journey after finishing fourth in the Premier League last term, there are likely to be further incomings.

I news have reported this week that Magpies supporters should expect two more signings to arrive at St. James's Park this summer, and while one place will likely be taken by a defender, the soon-confirmed departure of Allan Saint-Maximin opens the door for another offensive move.

Should Howe indeed decide to target that area of the pitch again, Galatasaray's Nicolo Zaniolo could be the man for the job…

What's the latest on Nicolo Zaniolo to Newcastle?

According to Tuttomercatoweb, United technical director Dan Ashworth has requested information from the Lions regarding the availability of the Italy international, who only joined from Roma last winter.

Galatasaray are reluctant to part with the 24-year-old and will not even consider offers below €35m (£30m), and it's now up to the Premier League side to decide whether they can afford to part with such a sum for another offensive talent.

How good is Nicolo Zaniolo?

Previously hailed as "incredible" by Daniele De Rossi, Zaniolo burst onto the scene as a first-rate prospect but saw his rise detrimentally hampered by two anterior cruciate ligament injuries in 2020, ruling him out of 67 matches throughout the 19/20 and 20/21 campaigns.

He did demonstrate his quality and resilience by showcasing his skills during the 21/22 season, scoring eight goals and supplying nine assists for Jose Mourinho's Roma across 42 outings – netting the only goal in the Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord.

Falling out of favour last season, Zaniolo made the switch to Galatasaray in January and has impressed during his six months in Turkey, scoring five goals from 12 outings, leaving Howe hoping to bring him to the Premier League and make use of his striking ability.

AS Roma's former midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo.

His natural goal-scoring instinct is something that Howe is seemingly targetting at St. James's Park, with Barnes a player of similar profile, scoring 13 goals for Leicester City last term and likened as a 'Similar Player' to Zaniolo, as per FBref.

Given that FBref also ranks 13-cap Italy star among the top 3% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year, the fleet-footed maverick could ease the burden on Newcastle talisman Alexander Isak this season.

Signing in a club-record £63m deal from Real Sociedad one year ago, the Swede scored ten goals and supplied three assists from 27 outings across all competitions during an injury-disrupted campaign, and fans will eagerly await his performances this year as he looks to take the next step in his development.

Isak, also aged 23, ranks among the top 17% of forwards for progressive passes, the top 16% for progressive carries and the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90, which effectively illustrates his energy and exuberance that could allow Zaniolo – who finds dangerous openings with regularity – to thrive.

The dynamic forward, combined with the directness of Barnes and Zaniolo, could result in a fruitful season for Newcastle and United must look at completing a move for the Italian maverick to boost their chances both domestically and in Europe.

Indrajith ton salvages India Red's day

The Tamil Nadu batsman’s 181-ball knock, featuring 12 fours and two sixes, helped India Red recover from 159 for 7 to finish the first day at 291 for 9

B Indrajith notched up an unbeaten 120 to shepherd India Red to 291 for 9 at stumps on the first day after India Green reduced them to 159 for 7 at Green Park. After captain Dinesh Karthik elected to bat, the India Red openers failed to build on strong starts before fast bowler Ankit Rajpoot broke into the middle order.Indrajith’s 181-ball knock, featuring 12 fours and two sixes, came against the backdrop of India Red capitulating from 70 for no loss to 123 for 5 in under 40 overs, before losing the next four wickets for another 82 runs. Batting at No.4, Indrajith cruised to his fifth first-class hundred, despite finding little support at the other end. Even as his side kept losing wickets at regular intervals, Indrajith added 86 unbroken runs for the last wicket with Vijay Gohil, who struck a 35-ball 22.Opener Priyank Panchal, coming off twin centuries in the previous game, fell for 36 after a 70-run opening stand with Sudip Chatterjee (34). After Rajpoot trapped Panchal in front in the 25th over, Suresh Raina accounted for Chatterjee seven balls later.Of the seven bowlers used by India Blue, Rajpoot was the most effective, picking up three wickets for 44 runs. Barring Pankaj Rao, all of the others picked up at least one wicket, with Jaydev Unadkat bagging 2 for 64.

Tottenham Could Copy Hojbjerg Success By Signing "World-Class" £40m Target

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to swoop in and repeat a recent success under their new boss…

Is James Ward-Prowse leaving Southampton?

Despite West Ham United being the side seemingly in command to secure the signing of James Ward-Prowse, complications arose that scuppered a deal seemingly progressing smoothly.

As such, the Daily Star are now suggesting that the Lilywhites are seeking to prey on that hesitancy, hijacking David Moyes’ move with a bigger bid.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

The report states that Ange Postecoglou’s outfit are much more likely to match Southampton’s £40m valuation than the Hammers, who could only muster up a £25m bid recently.

Spurs have been watching the English midfielder for months now.

How many goals has James Ward-Prowse scored for Southampton?

The Saints skipper has been a Premier League stalwart ever since his promotion to the first team in 2011, rising through their academy to feature 410 for the senior squad.

During this period, in which the south coast club have starred and suffered across the last decade, the 28-year-old maestro has remained a reliable and constantly outstanding figure in the engine room of every manager to pass through their doors.

As such, even last year during their eventual relegation, he still managed 11 goals and five assists across all competitions.

Nathan Jones, who oversaw a portion of that campaign, hailed his midfield mastermind: “He's been outstanding. When I arrived at the club my first conversation with him was ten minutes after he didn't get picked for the England squad.

“Since that moment, he's been absolutely world-class for me. For me, the way he's been around it and the way he reacted – we're seeing his performances now that are motivated and driven.”

Capable of dictating from deep or operating as an attacking midfielder, Ward-Prowse would arguably be the perfect technician to fit within Postecoglou’s system, which often requires two hard-working and attack-minded no.8s.

pierre-emile-hojbjerg

With 55 goals and 54 assists during his time at the St Mary’s, alongside the 85% pass accuracy, two key passes and 1.7 tackles per game (via Sofascore) he posted last year in the Premier League, he further emphasises such a suggestion.

Not only that but by swooping from Southampton yet again, it could emulate the success earned when Jose Mourinho tempted Pierre-Emile Hojjberg to join the north London outfit back in 2020.

The Danish enforcer moved for just £15m and has since featured 145 times for the club. And yet, after three fine years of service, they could now be set to make a profit on the 28-year-old, as Atletico Madrid continue to push for his services.

Given his last two seasons have seen him maintain a 7.11 and 7.19 average rating in the league, ranking him within Spurs’ top-five performers in both years, it is fair to say his acquisition marked a masterclass from Daniel Levy for a pleasant change, which could get even better as they push him towards an exit and usher in an exciting future under the new management.

Perhaps Ward-Prowse could have a similarly influential effect, helping to provoke a new, brighter era for the club, with his dynamism and attacking impetus key in instigating that change.

Chelsea: Blues Step Up Chase For "Enormous" Star

Chelsea supporters have been handed an interesting update on Crystal Palace star Michael Olise as the club's transfer plans take shape.

Who will Chelsea sign next?

The west Londoners now face missing out on star midfield target Moises Caicedo after Liverpool and Chelsea agreed a British-record £111 million fee for the Ecuador international.

Mauricio Pochettino's side have been chasing a move for Caicedo all summer, with reports earlier this week detailing they were growing confident, but Liverpool's late hijack appears to have put a dent in their hopes of signing him.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp even confirmed to the media that Liverpool had agreed a fee with Brighton for Caicedo, despite not having limitless resources.

"The fee with the club is agreed," said Klopp in his Friday press conference.

"We will see what that means. We aren't a club with endless resources and we didn't expect a couple of things to happen this summer. Then it happened."

This comes as a very unexpected development late in the transfer window and Chelsea may now have to consider alternative targets, like Southampton's Romeo Lavia.

Read the latest Chelsea transfer news HERE…

Pochetttino's side have already put pen to paper on moves for Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez and Angelo this window, but Todd Boehly and co are after even more after many departures.

Indeed, Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ethan Ampadu have all departed Stamford Bridge for pastures new.

In terms of other transfer targets, Palace star Olise has been central to rumours linking him with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The forward's contract contains an enticing £35 million release clause, with journalist Pete O'Rourke sharing the latest on their pursuit to Football Insider.

The reporter writes that Chelsea are set to step up their chase for the Frenchman, after they missed out on Ghana international star Kudus to Brighton.

O'Rourke wrote:

"Chelsea are ready to step up their interest in Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise as they are set to miss out on top target Mohammed Kudus – who is closing in on a move to Brighton.

"However, there are question marks about Olise’s fitness. He is set to be out until September with an injury he picked up with France at the Under-21 European Championships."

How good is Michael Olise?

Crystal Palace midfielder Michael Olise.

The 21-year-old attacker was a Selhurst Park standout under two different managers last term, finishing 2022/2023 as one of Palace's best-performing players per match with 11 assists and two goals (WhoScored).

Eagles boss Roy Hodgson, commenting on Olise's exceptional form last term, called the player an "enormous talent".

“I have seen him for 10 days less than I have seen the others," said the current Palace manager to media members.

What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent – he has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.”

Indeed, all signs point towards Olise being a promising move.
