Sri Lanka Cricket has outlined an ambitious plan to increase the number of match-day tickets sold to 100,000 per Test series, over the next four years. SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala said presently a three-Test series would draw an aggregate of fewer than 40,000 spectators, but the board aims to identify spectator-friendly Test venues and then improve facilities within those grounds to attract a larger audience.Improvements to bathroom facilities and an increase in the number of big screens and televisions will be among the ground upgrades. SLC also announced a move towards online ticket sales, for which Indian company BookMyShow has been contracted. SLC said online ticket sales will begin during the Australia tour, but traditional ticket outlets will also be operational.”When spectators go to a match, they want to be guaranteed their seat, and for it to be as easy a process as possible,” Sumathipala said. “We also want to make sure the spectators are entertained during their time at the ground.”The Galle Cricket stadium, which is located close to the centre of town, ordinarily draws a substantial Test-match crowd, while the Asgiriya Stadium had also been a well-patronised venue during its years of operation. Sumathipala said this suggested that venues within the city limits, where spectators may arrive and leave as their day allows, will be prioritised as Test venues. Asgiriya has not hosted a Test since 2007, but Sumathipala said SLC would look into upgrading facilities there with a view to resuming international cricket at the venue.”At the moment, Galle is a successful venue, and SSC is successful, but I don’t think venues like Dambulla or the Premadasa Stadium are as successful,” Sumathipala said. “The reason is, when people come in a bus, train or three-wheeler, and they see someone is getting close to a fifty or a hundred, they want to come into the ground and see that.”There’s a culture of people participating in a Test match whenever there is some excitement. We prefer to have the Test venues built up in a different way from the limited-overs venues. It has to be done in a scientific way. There also have to be facilities for women and children.”

BCCI to file review petition against Supreme Court verdict

The BCCI is set to file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s verdict that approved most of the Lodha Committee’s recommendations

A legal expert is of the opinion that if BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke do not meet the Lodha committee, it could lead to contempt proceedings against the board•AFP

The BCCI is set to file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s verdict that approved most of the Lodha Committee’s recommendations. The decision to file the petition is based on the advice of former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju, who was appointed to counsel the board on the verdict related to the implementation of the committee’s recommendations. It is also learnt BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke will not go through with their scheduled meeting with the Lodha Committee on Tuesday after Katju advised them against it.”Our judicial review petition is pending. We will be going to file it [in the next two days]. Till the outcome is not there how can we go and attend the meeting?” a top BCCI official told ESPNcricinfo. “Justice Katju has clearly told us that you should go for the review petition. Members have also agreed [with his assessment]. We will look at the outcome of the review petition and take the necessary action.”‘Even the ICC is concerned’

The protracted legal battle that the BCCI is facing has caused concerns in the ICC, a top BCCI official said. According to him, the issue was raised during the ICC’s governance committee meeting recently. “The world is looking at you. It’s not only the BCCI but it’s also the ICC that is getting very concerned,” he said.
“In the governance committee also, when they were talking about constitutional amendment they thought [if such is] the situation in one of the permanent members what do we expect in other countries? [The] ICC can’t keep quiet on this because it is the BCCI, they have to give notice and all that.”
The BCCI had decided to trial the pink ball during the Duleep Trophy before possibly going ahead with it during the long home season in 2016-17. The official conceded that legal battles had stalled the progress of cricketing matters. The domestic calendar has not yet been announced.
“With this kind of confusion, how can we [focus on] cricket?” he asked. “We had decided everything [on the domestic fixtures] a month back, but we have been stuck with the judgement.”

It is understood that with the parliamentary session in progress on Tuesday, Thakur, who is a Member of Parliament with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, will be unavailable to meet the Lodha Committee in any case. It is understood that Shirke wrote to the committee on Sunday night requesting that the meeting be deferred. The committee, however, declined the request.According to a legal expert, a review petition has to be filed within 30 days of the verdict, and it will be heard by the same bench of judges that passed the judgement, in this case Chief Justice of India TS Thakur.”Review petitions are usually entertained when there is an error apparent. But here is a case where two judges have taken a very serious view of the matter; it’s not like they have passed a judgement after one hearing,” the legal expert told ESPNcricinfo. “The judges have taken a very specific view on the matter. The question of whether it’s wrong is not something the Supreme Court is going to go into. They are not going to re-examine those things. The expert said “99%” of the petitions were dismissed in the chamber itself. “[Review petitions come into the picture in] cases where very serious legal errors are committed, which the court may not have been aware of,” the expert said.”Some fact, for example, which for some reason the court didn’t consider which completely alters the nature of the judgement. It’s just sort of a thing which parties file mostly to prolong the matter as opposed to actually getting any relief.”The point of having a Supreme Court is to ensure matters come to a conclusion and some final judgement is arrived at. Now if they will file a review petition it will go before CJI Thakur and some other judge who will be assigned to the matter.”The expert felt that should Thakur and Shirke not meet with the Lodha Committee it might lead to contempt proceedings. “There is an argument that can be made that the committee’s findings essentially merge with the Supreme Court’s judgement,” he said. “Therefore, if they fail to abide by an order of the court then that could amount to contempt of the court.”I am pretty sure if they don’t meet them tomorrow then someone will file a contempt petition or the Supreme Court itself can also , take it upon themselves and say you should have appeared, or the Lodha Committee might write to the Supreme Court and say they haven’t appeared.”A Lodha Committee source also confirmed that contempt proceedings would be initiated should Thakur and Shirke not turn up for the meeting. The BCCI official, however, suggested the board couldn’t afford to worry about consequences considering that they were “fighting for survival.” “This is all we can do, what else can we do,” he said. “We also have our fundamental rights.”Katju, who submitted an interim report to the BCCI on Sunday, had also termed the court’s order “unconstitutional and illegal” and said it had violated “principles of the Indian Constitution”.

Man United Face Losing £26m-Rated Player This Summer Window

Manchester United look set to lose one of their first-team players this summer, with Football Insider reporting that Scott McTominay wants to exit the club during the transfer window.

Who are Manchester United selling this summer?

The midfielder has been in and around the Red Devils' starting eleven for about seven years now, having really broken into the reckoning for them back in the 2016/17 campaign. That year, at just 19 years of age, he played in 17 Premier League outings for the club and his appearance tally has only grown since then. The Scot has since turned out on 143 occasions in the top-flight, 99 of which have been starts.

He's been used frequently again this season, with 23 appearances in the league. However, under Erik ten Hag, he has struggled to establish himself as a starter on a regular basis as he has in the past, with only ten starts to his name. It means that this campaign has seen the least amount of action for McTominay since the 2019/20 season.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

Now, it appears that he could want out of United, with a report from Football Insider stating that the midfielder wants to leave the club during the summer window. He has told friends that he plans to try and exit Old Trafford in order to get more regular minutes, with the player well aware that he needs to be getting onto the field a lot more.

In addition, with other midfield options potentially coming into the equation, there is every chance he could fall even further down the pecking order, and with the Scotland man desperate for minutes, that would be a further blow to the player.

Are Man United letting Scott McTominay go?

The Red Devils then could finally bring an end to McTominay's stint at the club this transfer window. Having come up through the ranks at Old Trafford, it would be sad for them to see one of their own youth team players leave, but it could work out better for player and club.

The 26-year-old has proven that he can still deliver when called upon by Ten Hag though, and it suggests that more regular action could get the best out of him again. For example, for the club this season, he has still averaged 1.4 tackles per game, a better rate than Fred, Raphael Varane and Christian Eriksen, showing that he remains one of their best options in terms of standing in front of the defence and stopping opposition attacks.

He's been lauded in the past for his abilities too, with football journalist Josh Bunting commending him for one of his previous performances by admitting he had been a "standout" for the side when thrown onto the field, whereas he was also once hailed as a "physical monster" by former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The midfielder can still do a good job in the centre of the field – so if he does leave United for first-team football, it could be a good move for the player if he can get regular minutes and show his footballing abilities. If they did let him go too, CIES Football Observatory suggest his value could be around £26m, so United could also fetch quite a respectable fee.

West Ham eye "dominant" £190k-p/w titan

Manchester United’s Harry Maguire has questioned his future and West Ham United are plotting a move for the defender this summer.

What’s the latest on Harry Maguire to West Ham United?

According to ESPN, the 30-year-old will hold talks with Erik ten Hag after the club’s FA Cup Final showdown with Manchester City this weekend.

This outlet also revealed that the Red Devils are “willing to listen to offers” for the Englishman and the Hammers have already made an enquiry about his availability.

Whilst Ten Hag doesn’t want to get rid of Maguire, he understands that the club captain is entitled to seek new opportunities and more regular game time.

Despite his limited minutes, the skipper was still named in the England squad for the upcoming fixtures against Malta and North Macedonia.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate recently said that it's “not a situation that can continue forever” and David Moyes could offer him a lifeline.

Who could Harry Maguire replace at West Ham?

The former Leicester star has endured a tricky campaign that has seen him displaced by the excellent partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. This has resulted in Maguire starting just eight Premier League games this season, having been an unused substitute on 15 occasions.

The £190k-per-week man, who was almost the first name on the team sheet under Ole Gunnar Solskjær has had to acclimatise to a far more reduced role, which has led to doubts over his Old Trafford future.

Therefore, the Irons have looked into the possibility of landing his signature and he would be an extraordinary upgrade on the declining Angelo Ogbonna.

The Italian has only started 13 Premier League games, and although he has been a commendable servant for the East London outfit, his statistics point toward an exit.

Disappointingly, the veteran centre-back ranks in the lowest 4% and 10% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for tackles and blocks per 90, according to FBref.

Angelo Ogbonna

Conversely, Maguire sits in the highest 11% for blocks per 90 and recently his manager has praised his influence.

He said: “He’s more dominant and dictating, he’s taking more initiative on the training pitch.”

Furthermore, the 55-cap international is a far more astute ball-playing asset and is renowned for his excellent pinpoint passing.

This is showcased by the fact that Maguire averages 3.09 progressive passes per 90, while Ogbonna manages just 0.8 for the same metric. The Red Devil also trumps the 35-year-old for progressive carries per 90, ranking in the best 20%, whilst his positional peer dismally resides in the bottom 1%.

In a new era for West Ham, and a new chapter for Maguire, this transfer makes perfect, logical sense, and he could recapture the form that prompted United to splash £80m on him.

West Ham identify "unbelievable" coach to replace Moyes

The West Ham board has been teetering for a while, endlessly agonising over David Moyes’ uncertain future.

The Scotsman has bought so much joy to East London. Incredibly, he managed consecutive top-seven finishes, as well as a commendable European excursion last season that was halted in the semi-finals by the eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

This term, the Irons have gone one step further on the continent and made it to the Europa Conference League Final.

Moyes and his squad are on the cusp of immortality, but failure to win this competition could spell the end for the veteran coach.

According to the Guardian, the Hammers are giving fresh consideration to Moyes’ dismissal to heighten the pressure on the game on Wednesday evening in Prague.

His fate rests upon reversing history and securing West Ham’s first major trophy in 43 years.

However, as per Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna, Brendan Rodgers is a “leading candidate”, should Moyes fail at the last hurdle.

Would Brendan Rodgers be a good fit at West Ham?

A victim of recency bias would wrongly discount the obvious quality of Rodgers. The 50-year-old has endured a difficult campaign, unable to stem Leicester City’s downward spiral that culminated in a surprising relegation.

The club only signed two players last summer to leave Rodgers exposed and unevenly supported.

Prior to this tumultuous year at the King Power Stadium, the Northern Irishman had deservedly developed a prestigious reputation as quite simply, an unbelievable coach.

He first announced his managerial brilliance to British football with Swansea, securing promotion to the Premier League in 2012 via the play-offs.

Brendan Rodgers winning the FA Cup

The tactician was then announced as the boss of Liverpool and although it didn't quite go according to plan there, Merseyside legend Steven Gerrard was one effusive voice, heaping praise upon his managerial style.

He said: “His one-on-one management is the best I have known. He makes you go out onto the pitch feeling a million dollars — full of confidence and belief. He is a very confident manager.”

In more recent times, Rodgers managed the Foxes to their first-ever FA Cup victory in 2021 and had the club on the cusp of Champions League football.

Jurgen Klopp has expressed his admiration for his peers' work and said: “Leicester are built like you would like to build a team. Brilliant team. What they do is really good. Exciting, fresh; defend well; play football and are especially threatening in counter-attacks."

After an £166m outlay last summer, Moyes conceded that the spending “has not worked as well” as he would’ve liked, and given Rodgers' ability to pinpoint a player’s best role and mould a squad, his arrival at the London Stadium could be the perfect scenario.

Described as “unbelievable” by Michail Antonio, a player he could end up coaching, the appointment of Rodgers would herald a new era that could reignite the squad and the fan base.

Kohli deadbats Harbhajan's pitch jibe

“We believe in our skill much more, and not focus on creating atmosphere or conditions that might suit us partially,” Virat Kohli said when asked about surfaces aiding India at home

Sidharth Monga in Indore11-Oct-20162:33

We’re focusing on our skills, not conditions – Kohli

Harbhajan Singh, India’s most successful offspinner at the moment, has opposed the kind of surfaces the team has played on at home over the last ‘four’ years. He’s stated as much in several interviews. He used the hash tag ‘tailor-made conditions for spinners’ while referring to the Indore surface. He went on to say his and Anil Kumble’s wickets tally would have been “something else” if they had bowled more on such pitches. Virat Kohli, to whom the mention of the word ‘pitch’ is a red rag, was told of Harbhajan’s comments after India had completed the whitewash of New Zealand inside four days in Indore.Kohli was then asked if he attributed these wins to pitches or “something else”. “Who made that statement?” Kohli shot back. “Harbhajan Singh,” he was told. “Oh? Okay,” he stopped. It must be mentioned that while the conversation around pitches has been subdued this season because they haven’t been as dramatic as they were against South Africa last season. Kolkata, in fact, was a seaming pitch, which brought the New Zealand fast bowlers into the game. However, Harbhajan’s is the first instance of someone criticising the pitches from inside the system. He is an active cricketer who was a part of the India squad in the Asia Cup played in Bangladesh earlier this year. Kohli refrained from directly reacting to Harbhajan’s statement although he did sound a little taken aback.”Obviously, I mean,” Kohli paused. “See even if it is a turning pitch you have to bowl well. There is no… spin doesn’t happen only off the pitch. Spin is about how many revs you impart off the shoulder first. And then the ball will do something off the pitch. I quite clearly remember after we lost to New Zealand in the World T20, suddenly their spinners were quality and we were found out. I don’t see anyone talking about that now. The same spinners have played. Why have they not been able to pick wickets? It is as simple as that. Our fast bowlers picked wickets everywhere. We never complained about anything. So… see you can give a guy a cement track to bat on. He [still] needs to have the mindset to score runs. It is as simple as that.”Earlier when asked about complete team performances on three different tracks and how much confidence that gives India for the England series, Kohli once spoke about the pitches. “Well, we knew before the series that people are going to start talking about pitches,” Kohli said. “But we made it a point that we… we knew that there are monsoons everywhere, wickets are not going to be as dry. Especially in Kolkata, we knew that it wouldn’t be dry; it was a newly laid wicket. We didn’t say anything once. We believe in our abilities, we should be good enough to do it on any surface and against any team.”That is a step in the right direction as far as our team is concerned. We believe in our skill much more, and not focus on creating atmosphere or conditions that might suit us partially. We just wanted to express ourselves the way we can on a cricket field. We finished two games in four days on perfectly fine Test cricket pitches. That gives us a lot of confidence.”
