Spurs’ 99-touch "Rolls-Royce" Stole The Show Vs Palace

Tottenham Hotspur defeated Crystal Palace in a one-goal affair on Saturday afternoon to return to winning ways and take the sixth-place spot in the Premier League.

The Lilywhites took the lead on the stroke of half-time through talisman Harry Kane's resounding header, ending a run of four games in the top flight without victory.

Three points in north London leave Ryan Mason's outfit on 57 points after 35 outings, although a top-four finish looks to be an unattainable prospect with fourth-placed Manchester United six points ahead with two games in hand.

The emphasis must now be on securing nine points from nine in the culminating phase of the campaign, serving the club with the optimum chance of qualifying for the Europa League next term – a questionable prospect itself with the Seagulls just two points below in seventh – and with three games in hand.

The display against the Eagles claimed a first clean sheet in ten matches, which was largely down to the imperious performance of Argentinian centre-back Cristian Romero, whose all-encompassing work will embolden his teammates ahead of the crucial forthcoming period.

How did Romero perform against Crystal Palace?

Having signed for Spurs from Italian Serie A outfit Atalanta for £50m in 2021, Romero has made 63 appearances, scoring one goal and assist apiece.

The World Cup winner has played 33 times at club level this term and been an ever-present for his side.

The £165k-per-week gem ranks among the top 8% of centre-backs across Europe's big five leagues over the past year for tackles and within the top 16% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, and was able to demonstrate his aptitude at the back and then some against Roy Hodgson's resurgent Palace.

As per Sofascore, the 20-cap star recorded a match-best 8.5 rating, was an insurmountable wall with eight clearances, posted five interceptions and three tackles, and showcased himself as a ball-playing master with 99 touches and a pass completion rate of 88%, while succeeding with four of his five long balls.

Cristian Romero and Son Heung-min celebrate the South Korean's goal for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

It was the robustness and the tenacity that will have been so eye-catching to the Spurs hierarchy, who witnessed the unstoppable force bulldoze into 12 duels, of which he won 10 – a remarkable 83.3% success rate.

Romero also exhibited the offensive prowess of his arsenal by hitting the woodwork, creating one big chance and being hailed as a "Rolls-Royce" by Martin Keown.

With Tottenham needing a leader with iron-clad resolve to galvanise the squad at this late stage of the campaign, Romero proved that he is that man, and with the new campaign on the horizon, his brilliant display will undoubtedly evoke optimism that a return to prominence could be enacted next year.

Davies still striving to make his case

Steven Davies struck 82 to lead his side away from trouble, after which the Surrey batsman reiterated his desire to retake the gloves

On March 15 2009, a ragtag England side, fresh from being bundled out for 51 en route to defeat in the Test series, faced West Indies in a T20 game in Trinidad. That Andrew Strauss led England’s T20 side embodied their frazzled state.Predictably, England were thrashed. Amid the wreckage of an ignominious defeat a little solace came from the bat of Steven Davies: making his international debut aged 22, Davies top scored with a crisp 27.On Friday, Davies turned 30, an age that invites self-reflection among all of us, but especially in those with career as short as that of professional sportsmen. Davies has much to be proud of: over 10,000 first-class runs at a tick above 40 apiece, and each made with an élan rarely spied on the county circuit. And yet all these runs cannot quite detract from the abiding sense of Davies’ career as being a little unfulfilled. In the seven years since his England debut, Davies has added just 12 more international caps, and has yet to play a Test match. “I’m fairly happy with it,” Davies said of his career to date. “I’ve represented England, which was one of my goals as a young boy.”All his batting qualities were in evidence against Nottinghamshire at The Oval. While Surrey slipped to 172 for 6, Davies remained impervious to the sense of crisis mounting over Surrey’s Division One status. As much as any shots that Kumar Sangakkara played during his 29, Davies’s every stroke oozed elegance.Consecutive boundaries off Brett Hutton – one glided through third man, the other caressed to fine leg of his hips – encapsulated Davies’ ability to reach the boundary without any discernible effort. There are few more aesthetic batsmen on the county circuit, and here that elegance was married with grit: Davies played Jake Ball with meticulous care, leaving the ball with great precision. The shame was that Davies played on for 82 in the evening gloom. In his own judgement, it was a microcosm of his wider challenge to capitalise upon his good starts.”It’s just application. It’s turning those 80s, like I got today, into 120 or 130. I once spoke to Rob Key about batting and he said, ‘You can’t score runs every day, but when it is your day, make sure it’s a massive score.’ For me, it’s turning those decent scores into really big ones, and that will take me to the next level.”Davies’ delicate cuts, played so late that the ball already seemed safely nestled inside the wicketkeeper’s gloves, were also infused with a rather elegiac quality. His aptitude in the first-class game befits a stage greater than a dingy day at The Oval, but Davies might never get it.The debate over Jonny Barstow’s readiness as a Test wicketkeeper, for all his gluttonous recent run-scoring, emphasises that England have lacked an established Test keeper since Matt Prior’s form deserted him three years ago.It was once assumed that Davies would replace Prior. But the tragic death of Tom Maynard, a close friend, in 2012 triggered a collapse in his form, and later a battle with depression. After that fateful year Davies’ form has remained good without ever quite being scintillating, but his England ambitions have been undermined by a decision he made early in the summer of 2014, to stop keeping wicket and play as a specialist batsman instead. Surrey were taken aback. Davies has still made easily enough runs to justify his place in the team, but far from enough to suggest to the England selectors he could play international cricket as a specialist batsman. At the start of this season Davies declared his intent to regain the gloves and, in so doing, maximise his England ambitions. But halfway through the summer, Davies has not kept wicket in a single game, in any format. With each match that passes, so his international ambitions subtly recede. To keep for Surrey, Davies needs to usurp Ben Foakes and also Gary Wilson, who has kept ahead of Davies in white-ball cricket. “I’ve got to bide my time,” he said. “It’s frustrating, but it’s just the way it is. I’m in the last year of my contract so we’ll see what happens at the end of the year.”If he did choose to leave, Davies would not be short of suitors – Essex, Nottinghamshire and Somerset are among the counties potentially attracted by his consistent run-scoring – but might need to accept less than his hefty wage at The Oval. Davies could face a conflict between pursuing his England ambitions and safeguarding his financial future. The greatest reason for that is the eminent potential of Foakes. Trevor Bayliss has spoken about Foakes’ potential as a future England keeper. Here there were glimpses of why: consecutive flicks to the leg-side boundary off Harry Gurney brimmed with panache, even if Foakes’ stay at the crease was too fleeting. Despite Arun Harinath’s 73, which became progressively more fluent as it progressed, there was something worryingly familiar about the meekness of Surrey’s top order.”We need to play tougher, smarter cricket,” Davies said. That he did just that, allied to Nottinghamshire’s reliance upon their opener pair of quicks and the counterpunching of Tom Curran, meant that Surrey were able to salvage a position of near-parity by the close. But, once again, both Davies and his club would have hoped for even better.

Chelsea Will "Discuss" Signing £100m Star This Summer

Chelsea are set to "discuss" signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Which strikers could Chelsea sign this summer?

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, the Blues view Napoli forward Victor Osimhen as their "main target" this summer, and they could offer more than €100m (£87m) for the Nigerian, but back-up targets have also been identified.

Galetti claims that Dusan Vlahovic and Randal Kolo Muani are on Todd Boehly's list of targets, while they could make a move for former player Tammy Abraham, who could be available for around £40m if the buy-back clause is activated.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is "100%" set to leave this summer, with Kai Havertz potentially on the move as well, meaning a couple of new options may be needed up front.

As such, the Blues are set to "discuss" the possibility of signing Kane "internally" in the summer, as they are keen on bringing in a "traditional No.9", according to journalist Jacobs (via Chelsea News).

However, it is Manchester United that are said to have "done the legwork" to sign the Englishman, and it is unclear whether Levy would be willing to sell him to Chelsea under any circumstances.

If the Tottenham chairman does allow the 29-year-old to leave this summer, it is highly unlikely he will accept a bid of less than £100m, but a move across the capital could still a possibility.

Would Harry Kane move to Chelsea?

The England captain's goal record speaks for itself, having netted a remarkable 27 goals in 36 Premier League games this season, second only to Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in the goal-scoring charts.

Graeme Souness has previously claimed the forward is England's only "truly world class" player, and he has now broken Wayne Rooney's record to become the country's all-time leading scorer, having scored 54 times for the Three Lions.

Premier League, Manchester United, Manchester United news, Manchester United transfers, Manchester United transfer news, MUFC, Harry Kane

Given that he will be 30-years-old by the time next season begins, the Spurs talisman is running out of time to win trophies, having previously expressed his desire to compete for the top honours, and he does not currently intend to sign a new contract.

That could open the door for a move in the summer, however it seems unlikely Kane would be willing to tarnish his legacy with Tottenham by making the move to Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea's lack of European football on offer would make it difficult to win the race for the striker.

Romano Reveals Exciting Man United News Is "Very Close"

Manchester United's efforts to tie David De Gea look set to pay off soon, with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano telling GiveMeSport that a new deal is "very close" for the goalkeeper.

What's the latest on David De Gea's new Man United contract?

The shot-stopper has been a first-team regular for the Red Devils once more this campaign, helping his side to break into the top four of the Premier League. However, even with the Spaniard managing to produce a total of 16 clean sheets in the division this season, there have been some calls for Erik Ten Hag to replace the United number one.

That's because of a series of errors the 32-year-old has made, with his most recent coming in United's game against West Ham. Despite this, the Red Devils have been trying to extend the player's stay at Old Trafford, with fresh contract talks ongoing. If De Gea was to stay on with the club though, he may no longer retain his spot as the undisputed number one inbetween the sticks according to some reports.

Now, it appears these talks over a new deal are nearing their end. According to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano via GiveMeSport, the Spaniard is "very close" to agreeing fresh terms with United although it hasn't quite been finalised yet.

Man United goalkeeper David de Gea

Speaking about the deal, Romano said:

"Yeah, the agreement is close. It's not done yet, but it's very, very close with the final clauses. This is something that they have been discussing for a long time now after United decided not to trigger the option in the contract of David De Gea for one more season."

Is David De Gea staying at Man United?

It looks as if the 32-year-old could be staying put at Old Trafford then, even if his spot as number one isn't entirely secure. There is no doubt that De Gea can still be a reliable option for United though, with the player managing a rating of 6.61 on WhoScored for his showings in the Premier League this season.

He's also been praised in the past for his ability inbetween the sticks, with current teammate Marcus Rashford once calling the goalkeeper "excellent" and a "top keeper."

Even if the player isn't quite at the same level now as he once was, he has shown that he can still produce on occasion with his rating over the course of this campaign. As a backup, he could still be a solid option for the Red Devils then.

Tamim wants more cricket for Bangladesh

Batsman Tamim Iqbal has said that Bangladesh’s ongoing lengthy break from international cricket will hamper the team’s chances of performing at its best

Mohammad Isam29-Jun-2016

‘People should be more interested in playing against us but instead we are sitting on the sidelines’ – Tamim Iqbal•Associated Press

Batsman Tamim Iqbal has said that Bangladesh’s ongoing lengthy break from international cricket will hamper the team’s chances of performing at its best. He also suggested that other international sides should be more willing to play against Bangladesh.”After such a great season, we are not playing for six months,” Tamim told ESPNcricinfo. “It would definitely hamper us. People should be more interested in playing against us but instead we are sitting on the sidelines. We don’t know who we are going to play after six months. There’s no team in the world apart from Zimbabwe who sit out for so long between matches.”Bangladesh’s last international appearance was at the World T20 in India on March 26. Their next assignment is scheduled to be against England at home in October, after their maiden Test in India was pushed back to early next year. A proposed West Indies tour of Bangladesh in September is under discussion but is yet to be confirmed.Tamim said it was all the more frustrating to wait for international cricket after having had a successful 2015. Bangladesh reached the World Cup quarter-finals in early 2015, before going on to beat Pakistan, India, South Africa and Zimbabwe in consecutive ODI series at home. That string of wins secured their place in the 2017 Champions Trophy in England. In light of the team’s improvement, Tamim wondered why other teams were still reluctant to play Bangladesh.”Sitting for six months is not doing justice to anything,” he said. “I could have understood if we played like we did five years ago when our result was predictable, but after performing so well they still don’t want to play us, I don’t know.”Bangladesh have been growing accustomed to such long breaks in international cricket over the last five years. Usually they face a lull in Test cricket but, this time, they are missing out on all formats after busy 2015 and 2015-16 seasons. The BCB said that it was trying to get teams to play against Bangladesh but also felt that players needed a break after non-stop cricket for 15 months.Tamim said any team would suffer after such a prolonged break, and stressed that Bangladesh deserved more cricket at the highest level.”Take any top team and tell them to sit for six months,” Tamim said. “You will see how they perform after sitting for eight months. They won’t play the way they were playing.”

Transfer Close For "Brilliant" £120k-p/w Arsenal Star

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka is set to depart the club, and a move to Bayer Leverkusen is nearly complete, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

What's the latest on Xhaka and Arsenal?

The Switzerland international has had his most productive season in an Arsenal shirt, notching up seven goals and seven assists in all competitions, but with one year left on his deal, all parties have decided to part ways.

He is closing in on a return to the Bundesliga, with Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen set to complete a deal for the 30-year-old.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that the deal was nearing completion, with Arsenal set to receive around £13m for the midfielder.

"I can confirm now that talks are very advanced between Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen for Granit Xhaka, so Xhaka will leave Arsenal at the end of the season, and 90% he will become a Bayer Leverkusen player," he stated.

"They're just waiting to complete some of the final details. It's a €15m deal, so Arsenal will get €15m and also the player will get a four-year contract at Bayer Leverkusen. Everything is almost ready."

How much will Arsenal miss Xhaka?

Although he has been a divisive figure at times during his seven-year spell in north London, his performances this season have made him a popular figure among the media, and he has become a crucial part of the midfield three.

He was only omitted from the starting XI twice in the league this season, and Arsenal struggled in both games. They found themselves 2-0 down at home to Bournemouth before he was substituted on, and they fell to a damaging draw against Southampton when he was absent with illness.

Granit Xhaka

The £120k-per-week star was described as "brilliant" earlier on this season, as his strong performances helped Arsenal sustain an unexpected title challenge throughout the campaign, and the club will need to replace him well.

There have been strong links with Declan Rice as well as Moises Caicedo, as two younger, robust midfielders who can replace both Xhaka's physical contributions and his leadership in the middle of the park.

Xhaka's leadership skills were praised earlier this season as he helped lead Arsenal to a derby victory away at rivals Tottenham Hotspur, and he may prove a tough figure to replace both on and off the pitch as one of the more vocal players in the squad.
