Mason Greenwood may be the undoubted star in the making at the moment, but Manchester United have a clutch of promising youngsters waiting patiently in the wings for their break-out moments. The Old Trafford faithful have already seen a bit of Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes this season, but one man who could eclipse them all is Brandon Williams.

Not the most heralded academy prodigy out of the group the Red Devils currently possess, but the player with arguably the biggest chance of stamping his mark on the first-team this season. The 19-year-old completed his first full 90 minutes of the campaign in the Europa League against AZ Alkmaar earlier this month, and according to some United fans, was one of the few silver linings of a drab 0-0 draw.

As a right-footed left-back, Williams is in the mould of United stalwart Denis Irwin, and speaking after the game against the Dutch side, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid him a remarkable compliment.

“Top class, absolutely top notch. You won’t see a better full debut from a full-back anywhere. The boy is just going to improve and improve. He’s got the right mentality. I’m very pleased for him.”

Those comments will be music to the teenager’s ears, particularly with the Manchester side’s current struggles in his favoured position. First-choice left-back Luke Shaw has been out of action since mid-August with a hamstring injury, and whilst recent reports suggests he is in line to make a return sooner rather than later, Solskjaer may do well to hold off from throwing him back into the side.

The England international has had a career beset by injuries, and has missed 103 games for United since signing from Southampton. There is absolutely no way for the Red Devils to wholeheartedly place their trust in the £27m-rated man, and that no doubt opens the door for Williams to seize his opportunity.

An injury-prone Shaw, and a make-shift defender in a 34-year-old Ashley Young, are his only real competitors at left-back. If Williams continues to impress in training, circumstances will surely dictate that he gets a run of games to show what he can do. And, judging by what Solskjaer thought of his full debut, there is no reason why he can’t be the academy prospect to make the most immediate mark on the team.

It’s been almost impossible to criticise anything Marcelo Bielsa has done during his time as Leeds United manager.

The Whites have gone from rotting in mid-table to being genuine promotion contenders under the Argentine, but there is one decision he keeps making over and over that he needs to rethink.

Of course, we’re talking about the Argentine’s tendency to allow a number of his senior players to appear for the U23 side.

Pablo Hernandez was the latest player to step down to U23 level as he worked on recovering from an injury problem, but he didn’t last too long in that game as he picked up another knock that has forced him to miss at least two games of first-team football.

The Spaniard is undoubtedly one of the Whites’ most important players as he’s won the club’s Player of the Year award twice in a row, therefore being without him for two games is a huge loss.

Fortunately, Leeds managed to overcome Birmingham on Saturday, but they may not be as lucky against playoff contenders Preston on Tuesday evening.

For all of Bielsa’s good qualities, he’s never been great at managing a squad. The famed ‘burnout’ effect that his teams often go through is well documented, and injuries played a huge part in the Whites’ failure to seal promotion in 2018/19 – they had amassed 31 by the time April came around.

Playing senior players in the U23s after they’ve been out with an injury can be a good thing on some occasions. If an inexperienced player such as Jamie Shackleton or Ben White had suffered an injury, a spell with the U23s to help them recover their match sharpness may be just what the doctor ordered.

However, sticking a 34-year-old midfielder with over a decade of senior experience with Carlos Corberan’s side seems like a bit of a pointless endeavour, especially after he got injured just 24 hours before a league outing.

If Bielsa is to continue this policy of sending his senior players to the U23s he needs to be a bit more savvy about when to do it as there can be no doubts about the fact that he’s misjudged this one.

جدير بالذكر أن نيمار يرتبط بالعودة لفريقه السابق برشلونة، ومبابي محل اهتمام لنادي ريال مدريد.

Marco Silva has praised Theo Walcott for his contributions to the side in recent times, claiming that the Englishman is a “really important player” for Everton.

What did he say?

Walcott has been a shining light this past month in what has been a very dark time for the club. Players across the pitch have failed to pull their weight, and the club have been fighting around the relegation zone ever since.

Walcott once again played a hand in an Everton win, just as he did against West Ham United. His assist for Bernard’s goal against the Hammers and his assist for Holgate against Watford have shown he is a vital man for Silva right now.

The Blues boss said: “Theo had a big impact again, the change we made [Walcott for Kean] had a big impact on our second half,” added Silva.

“Theo was always a really important player for me, he knows that. He is in a good moment and will help us in the next games as well.

“The way we built our attacks [after half-time] was faster and the gaps were clearer. We found the spaces more easily.”

More important than ever

It is easy to justify Walcott’s importance lately, simply by the fact that he has assisted both opening goals in Everton’s last two wins. But now, because of the injury to Bernard, the former Arsenal man is going to be more important than ever for the club.

In the game against Watford on Tuesday, Kean was bringing very little to the side in an unfamiliar wide role. He completed just three passes and never successfully dribbled past a player or created an opportunity. In truth, it was another forgetful performance from the Italian.

However, when he was replaced by Walcott for the second half, the Englishman brought to the pitch speed and more creativity. His assist and two dribble attempts showed more than what Kean gave in the entire first half.

Right now, with the injury to Bernard and the 30-year-old’s creative nature, Walcott is proving to be one of Silva’s most valuable assets in one of the more surprising sub plots to emerge at Goodison Park this season.
