Netherlands, Ireland Women embark on Sri Lanka tour

The Netherlands and Ireland Women’s teams have departed on a two-week tour to Sri Lanka as part of their preparations in the build-up to the Women’s World Cup Qualifier later this year

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Apr-2011The Netherlands and Ireland Women’s teams have departed on a two-week tour to Sri Lanka as part of their preparations in the build-up to the Women’s World Cup Qualifier later this year. A five-day coaching programme from April 18 to 22 will be followed by an eight-day quadrangular series also involving Sri Lanka and Pakistan from April 23 to 29. All four teams will be based in Colombo during the tour. The training programme, in partnership with the ICC European Development Programme, replaces what was previously run as the ICC European Women’s Academy. It is to be managed by Philip Hudson, ICC Regional Performance Officer, and will involve a three-strong coaching team, including former England A players Simon Francis and Kelly Evenson, from ICC Europe supporting the Ireland and Netherlands Women’s teams and their national coaches. It will consist of centre wicket and net practices focused primarily on batting against spin; local cricketers will be acting as bowlers to aid both sets of players in acclimatising to sub-continent pitches and conditions. Developing the standard of fielding is also a key objective of the programme. Selected players will undertake a media training session to learn key skills in dealing with the media to prepare them for future regional and global cricket tournaments.”For Women’s cricket in Europe this is the biggest event that has ever taken place,” said ICC Regional Development Manager, Richard Holdsworth. “It will be a fantastic opportunity for all the players and management to compete against full member nations and sample Asian conditions in preparation for the end of the year.”The development of women’s cricket in Europe is improving each year, with healthy participation figures, this series is just evidence of what can be achieved with a lot of hard work.”Ireland National Women’s Coach Stephen Moreton was pleased that the team would be travelling to Sri Lanka to improve Ireland’s chances at the Women’s World Cup Qualifier. “It’s a massive benefit to our preparations, as we will be facing similar conditions in November, when it really counts,” said Moreton.Netherlands Captain Helmein Rambaldo suggested that successfully acclimatising to sub-continental conditions will be her team’s main aim for the trip. “By having the tour to Sri Lanka, we are firstly getting the opportunity to get used to conditions in Asia and by playing the teams ranked above us, it will be a good challenge to see where we are at the moment and what we still need to work on till the tournament in Bangladesh.”Ireland and Netherlands will both play three ODIs and three Twenty20s each in the series.Ireland Squad: Ciara Metcalfe, Clare Shillington, Amy Kenealy, Eimear Richardson, Rebecca Rolfe, Laura Delany, Shauna Kavanagh, Louise McCarthy, Kimberley Garth, Mary Waldron, Emma Flanagan, Laura Cullen, Aisling GillNetherlands squad: Helmien Rambaldo, Violet Wattenberg, Marloes Braat, Laura Brewer, Christine Erkelens, Evelien Gerrits, Carlos de Groot, Denise Hannema, Jolette Hartenhof, Esther de Lange, Esther Lanser, Mol Alarda, Marijn Nijman, Miranda Meier

Porterfield rues lack of application

William Porterfield, the Ireland captain, admitted his side had “let a few people down” by surrendering tamely to Pakistan in the first of two one-dayers in Belfast

William Porterfield, the Ireland captain, said his side had “let a few people down” by surrendering tamely to Pakistan in the first of two one-dayers in Belfast, and put his side’s disappointing performance of 96 all out down to a lack of application with the bat. Opener Paul Stirling got them off to a flyer in the rain-reduced game, but once he departed, Ireland, to their detriment, did not rein in their strokeplay on a pitch that was offering the seamers a fair bit of assistance.”The way Paul started I think a few lads got caught up in that and thought it was a bit flatter,” Porterfield said. “It did seam about a bit and there were some poor shots. It was going to be difficult but I don’t think we acquitted ourselves as we should have.”There were too many bad shots and not enough application at the crease, especially after losing a couple of early wickets which can happen on any day. I think to keep losing wickets, we just folded too easily. We never put a partnership together. You never know on a wicket like that if you can scrap 160 or 170 in a reduced game you can contain teams and put them under pressure.”The series is a significant one for Ireland, as the ICC chief executive committee meets in a month’s time to discuss whether to overturn their decision to omit the Associates nations from the 2015 World Cup. Ireland’s impressive showing in the 2011 World Cup has garnered global support for their right to play in the next edition of the tournament, but their capitulation against Pakistan on Saturday suggested there is still a gap to be bridged between them and the top teams.”We’ve let a few people down today but we’ll be looking to turn that around come Monday,” Porterfield said. “We are disappointed in the way we performed today. We wanted to put on a performance for the fans that turned out and keep a buzz around Irish cricket.”He, however, stuck to the stand taken by him and coach Phil Simmons before the series began, in saying the ICC’s decision over the 2015 World Cup was not the top-most thing on their minds.”It is disappointing to make 96, but as I’ve said before it [the World Cup decision] is not something we think about or put in the forefront of our minds. We go out there with a plan to win a game and we didn’t do that today. We didn’t execute anything with the bat. We didn’t put any type of performance together.”The next one-dayer is at the same venue, the Civil Service Cricket Club in Stormont, on May 30, and despite the seven-wicket loss Porterfield was positive about his team’s chances of levelling the series.”I think it’s a mental think more than anything. It is something that will come together if everyone brings their A-game. We have to rectify that for Monday; we will do that.”

Confira:

Ganguly goes up against Kolkata

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Pune Warriors and Kolkata Knight Riders in Navi Mumbai

The Preview by Nitin Sundar18-May-2011Match factsThursday, May 19, Navi Mumbai
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)This time, he will be up against men wearing this jersey•Indian Premier League

Big PictureGoing into their last two league games, Kolkata Knight Riders’ task is not as clear as they would like it to be: if Kings XI Punjab lose their last game, Kolkata can make the play-offs even if they lose both their matches. If Punjab win, though, Kolkata might need two wins to be assured of a spot in the final four. Sourav Ganguly – the biggest player to emerge from Kolkata and a name that was synonymous with their franchise until the most recent player auction – has a chance to stop them. It happens only in the IPL.Yet, both Ganguly and his team-mates at Pune Warriors will know that they go in as rank outsiders. Kolkata have been consistent through the season, with their big-ticket players pulling their weight at different stages. The domestic Indian players have played their part too, especially Iqbal Abdulla and Manoj Tiwary. Pune, on the other hand, are out of contention after suffering an early-season slump that spanned seven successive losses. Ganguly looked like a batsman who hadn’t held a bat in 12 months in his first outing, and fell for a duck in his second. Does Pune’s campaign have a sting in its tail? Kings XI Punjab will be hoping it does, since a Kolkata defeat will keep their chances alive.Form guide (most recent first)Kolkata: LWLWW (fourth in points table)
Pune: LWWLL (ninth in points table)Team talkKolkata have seemed keen to open with Eoin Morgan, though the move has had little success. Morgan is not with the team anymore, and Shakib Al Hasan might be the one coming in for him. Given the lack of muscle in the middle order – excluding Yusuf Pathan – Gautam Gambhir might consider moving himself up the order.Pune will mull over the option of replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar with Shrikant Wagh, who was impressive at the DY Patil in the initial part of the season. Will Ganguly continue to play at No. 3?Predict the playing XIs for this match. Play ESPNcricinfo Team Selector. In the spotlightTime is running out for Robin Uthappa to deliver returns on the tremendous investment Pune made on him. He has scored 252 runs in 12 innings, but has not produced a single half-century. He has paraded all his shots this season, without displaying the right kind of shot-selection.

Brett Lee has set up a few sparkling mini-battles with Uthappa in the past – a league match in the 2007 CB series, and a 2010 IPL fixture being the most notable. There’s something irresistible about a contest between a fast bowler who likes to bowl straight, and a batsman who likes to hit it back, just as straight. Who will triumph when they clash on Thursday?Prime numbersKolkata haven’t hit enough sixes this year. Tiwary, with 12, is their leading six-hitter but he is only 14th on the overall list. Yusuf has only managed 11.
Rahul Sharma is the third-highest wicket-taker this season, with 16 wickets. He has also been the most economical bowler (5.33 per over) among those who have at least six wickets.
The chatter”We need one win from two games and that’s all I will be telling the team. I’m not obsessed with the points table. Our priority right now is to get the two points on Thursday.”

McKenzie defies Richardson with ton

A battling century by Neil McKenzie held up Worcestershire’s Alan Richardson-inspired victory charge at New Road but Hampshire are still in danger of being cut off at the foot of Division One in the County Championship

20-Jun-2011
Scorecard
A battling century by Neil McKenzie held up Worcestershire’s Alan Richardson-inspired victory charge at New Road but Hampshire are still in danger of being cut off at the foot of Division One in the County Championship. With the 36-year-old Richardson taking 9 for 114 in the match, the south coast visitors followed on 164 runs behind after folding for 239 and edged into a slender lead of 105 when reaching 269 for 9.Having opened the season with six consecutive defeats, fast-improving Worcestershire can now aim to wrap up a second successive win which would put them 36 points clear of Hampshire.McKenzie’s resistance may only have delayed the inevitable. After a sketchy start, the South African-born batsman went on to make 106 from 221 balls and put on 143 with Nic Pothas, who completed his second half-century of the match before falling for 72.The ever-willing Richardson got Worcestershire back on track when Pothas edged the first delivery after tea to second slip, and after an interlude of spin, with two wickets for Shakib Al Hasan, the strike bowler was back with the new ball. In his second over he finally broke McKenzie’s resolve, an lbw decision ending the 39th hundred of his career, but the last pair, James Tomlinson and Imran Tahir, survived until the close.Hampshire’s batting generally lacked confidence or conviction and the theory that they would benefit from a winning run in Twenty20 cricket was blown apart. Straight away they were back to where they left the Championship in a heavy defeat by Lancashire in their last match.Worcestershire, in contrast, are perhaps exceeding expectations, and once Hampshire’s fragility had been exposed, largely through the efforts of Richardson, they were relentless in driving home their advantage. From James Vince’s departure in the first innings to his second dismissal on the third morning, Hampshire lost 10 wickets for 69, the scale of the collapse underlining why they are the only side without a Championship win this season.Resuming at 232 for 7, they lasted for only 25 minutes as Richardson and Bangladesh spinner Shakib mopped up the tail for the addition of seven runs. More worrying for Hampshire was the way the top order imploded in the second innings.Liam Dawson avoided a ‘pair’ with an edged four through the slips but Richardson saw off the openers in his first five overs – Jimmy Adams taken at second slip and Dawson by wicketkeeper Ben Scott. Jack Shantry may lack Richardson’s zip but the young left-armer bowled a good line and backed up the senior seamer by removing Michael Lumb and Vince with catches in the slips by Vikram Solanki and Daryl Mitchell.
