Flintoff success an inspiration to Blackie

Andrew Flintoff’s success for England during the winter tours has inspired Somerset all rounder Ian Blackwell to want to emulate the Lancashire player

Richard Walsh13-Feb-2002Andrew Flintoff’s success for England during the winter tours has inspired Somerset all rounder Ian Blackwell to want to emulate the Lancashire player.Blackie told me, “He thoroughly deserves the success that he is having especially after he has taken so much stick about his weight. He has worked very hard and has got a lot to offer England.”He continued, “If he can stay fit he will be a very useful member of the test and one day side. He is a genuine all rounder.”Blackie played with Andrew Flintoff in the England side that took part in the Hong Kong Sixes back in the autumn, and was very impressed with his performances, and enjoyed his company. The Somerset player told me, “He is the same age as I am, and we came through the age groups together, and played against each other when I was at Derbyshire. Certain players you almost dread playing against and he was one. He was always the one who’d make it big time, and now he has.””Hong Kong was a taster for me, and I got to know him well over there. I hope that one day we will get to play in the same England one day side together,” Blackie told me,and concluded, “Seeing his success makes me more determined than ever in my fitness campaign.”

Celtic set to beat Ipswich to Wyke

A major update has emerged on Celtic’s pursuit of Charlie Wyke, it could affect Ipswich’s transfer plans this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to the Northern Echo, Scottish Premiership side Celtic are growing increasingly confident of landing Charlie Wyke from Sunderland this summer. Wyke is out of contract at the end of the month and the Hoops believe that they will be able to prise him away from the Stadium of Light ahead of other interested parties, with an offer set to be lodged by the club in the coming days.

Last month, Football Insider claimed Ipswich are interested in a deal to sign Wyke on a free transfer. The Tractor Boys are reportedly ready to offer Wyke a lucrative contract to come to Portman Road, but now look set to miss out on his signature as Celtic close in.

Earlier this year, Sunderland’s assistant manager Jamie McAllister lauded the “brilliant” centre-forward. He told Chronicle Live:

“The big man has been brilliant.

“He gives us a lot, a platform to play off, he can run in behind, he has good touch, and he is dangerous in the box.

“His all-round game is good, but he has now added goals to it. He’s full of confidence and he’s scored 25 goals this season now.”

Cook will be livid

Ipswich manager Paul Cook will be livid with this update as it means that he now looks set to miss out on a deal for Wyke this summer.

This could be a major blow to Ipswich’s transfer plans, as Football Insider claimed they were ready to drop a hefty sum of money on a contract for the striker – suggesting that he is, or was, high up on Cook’s list of transfer targets. Therefore, the boss will not be best pleased if Wyke ends up crossing the border to sign for Celtic in the coming weeks.

Ipswich have a goalscoring problem that they need to deal with in the window. James Norwood ended the campaign as Ipswich’s top goalscorer on nine goals, with no player managing to hit double figures. Alan Judge (four) and Gwion Edwards (six) were the club’s next two highest scorers and both players have since departed Portman Road. This shows that Ipswich desperately need to bring in added firepower in the summer and Wyke could have been the forward they need.

The £6.4k-per-week goal machine, Wyke, scored 26 goals in League One for Sunderland. He also averaged a sublime WhoScored rating of 7.35, with 4.8 aerial battles won per game for the Black Cats.

The tall forward scored 17 more than any Ipswich player managed throughout the entire campaign, highlighting how he could take Cook’s side to the next level with his ability up front. This is why the manager will be devastated at this latest development.

AND in other news, Cook heading for disaster with “outstanding” £2.3k-p/w ace, Ipswich fans will be livid…

England's batting needs confidence-boosting lift in next match

England are struggling to avoid a serious batting crisis going into the first Test of their three-match National Bank series with New Zealand

England are struggling to avoid a serious batting crisis going into the first Test of their three-match National Bank series with New Zealand. Two collapses suffered against State Championship minnows Otago, their late arrivals from England all struggling for form and time in the middle, their leading batsman on the last day of their game against Otago, Marcus Trescothick, complaining of concentration problems and the prospect of no respite against a stronger Canterbury team in their next game starting on Thursday at Hagley Oval. The only point in England’s favour going into the Test has to be that New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond is still on the injured list.Trescothick admitted after today’s drawn game with Otago that he was tired after having played all of England’s one-dayers against India and New Zealand and in most of the other games on the Test section of the Indian tour.He was hopeful that he might be spared duty when Nasser Hussain returns to lead the side against Canterbury.”I find I’m not mentally switched on when I’m going out to bat.”I found that in the last two or three one-day games,” he said.It was a problem that needed to be assessed as soon as it happened to find out what was going wrong and try hard to put it right.”I’ve found it very tough to concentrate. I’ve been going out and working really hard in the nets, almost twice as hard as I normally do, trying to get it right but the mental side of it has been the problem and being able to concentrate properly,” he said.Trescothick said he had a similar problem last summer when scoring five centuries in six innings just before the first Test against Australia. He took a week off before the second Test and scored a century in the second innings so on that occasion the break had worked. It was a fact with the amount of cricket being played that this sort of thing happened.”If anything I need a bit more of a break than the constant cricket,” he said. However, his innings of 68 today in England’s second innings had been of some comfort to him as he found his batting rhythm returning and he was pleased with his shot selection. His newly-arrived team-mates from England did struggle to make an impact however and it would be tough for them to be ready in time for the Test.”Two games to warm up is all right for those who were here for the one-day games, the rest of the guys, I don’t know. Having come from England where there was no outdoor practice, it will be tough for them,” he said. While not dominating Otago, England had managed to “cover” them, he said and there had been some good opportunities for the bowlers to have a good, long bowl.”We should have batted a lot better than we did, we still came out of it OK,” he said.Leading bowler Andy Caddick did pick up seven wickets during the game and he had a good work out.”He’s still got a little bit of work to do – his rhythms were coming back the more and more he bowled. He came back right at the end bowling five overs, sometimes I’ve seen him and that’s the best time he bowls, when he is quite tired. Sort of running him into the ground almost, as he tends to get a bit more rhythm,” Trescothick said.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Ian Holloway speech

Crystal Palace have angered some of their supporters after their official Twitter account posted Ian Holloway’s famous speech ahead of their crucial 2012/13 fixture against Peterborough United, from their new documentary When Eagles Dare.

Still without a manager after the departure of Roy Hodgson last month, Palace face an enormous task to restructure their backroom and playing staff, having also released 22 first team players earlier in June following the publication of the Eagles’ retained list [The Sun].

Lucien Favre now seems to be the frontrunner for the vacant role in the Selhurst Park dugout [Inside Futbol], butno such announcement has come to pass as pre-season draws ever closer for the south Londoners.

Upon viewing yet another official club post without an announcement on managerial clarity, loads of Crystal Palace fans took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at the lack of white smoke on that front.

Crystal Palace fans react:

Replying to the club’s official Twitter page, here is how some fans summarised their opinions on the documentary clipping in the context of the ongoing managerial search:

Astle innings pointed the way for New Zealand batsmen

Expect a better performance from New Zealand’s batsmen in the second National Bank Test with England after the lift they got from Nathan Astle’s display on the last day in Christchurch

Lynn McConnell19-Mar-2002Expect a better performance from New Zealand’s batsmen in the second National Bank Test with England after the lift they got from Nathan Astle’s display on the last day in Christchurch. That’s Craig McMillan’s feeling going into the Wellington match at the Basin Reserve, a ground that has been good for him in the past.”The knock that Nathan played was great.”It gave other guys a lift, some confidence after two or three pretty tough days where we had been behind the eight ball for most of the game after that first over that Cairnsy (Chris Cairns) bowled.”You could just see perhaps a little momentum that hopefully we can show on Thursday,” he said. The onus was on the more experienced players to lead the way, especially now that the firepower of Cairns had been lost. The senior batsmen in the side had failed to score enough runs in the first innings and had not achieved any of the game’s disciplines well enough, or for long enough, he said.”It’s a big game and it is going to take a big effort from everyone.”I love playing here, I’ve had some really good innings here and Hamilton are my two favourite grounds in terms of runs scored, I’ve had two of my Test hundreds here.”It’s a cricket ground, I enjoy the atmosphere, the people come in to watch us, it’s a good place to play cricket,” he said.In contrast to his home ground at Jade Stadium, he expected more people to turn out to watch the match.”The crowd was hugely disappointing in Christchurch. I was also disappointed with the one-day crowd. It is a rugby town.”But it disappoints me they don’t come out to watch especially when there are four or five Canterbury players in the side.”And after the success we’ve had all summer you wouldn’t think there would be many more reasons to come out and watch us.””In the end we didn’t play well so people may say that justified not coming to watch but in saying that they missed what from the first over to the last over was an enthralling Test match.”I’m sure those who did go along thoroughly enjoyed it.”I was disappointed as were most of the other guys.”Of the bowlers they had been up against there was respect for Matthew Hoggard who had shown he could be dangerous when the ball was swinging.”We played him better when it wasn’t swinging around and if it doesn’t continue to swing we will continue to play him well.”Take nothing away from him, he bowled well and to get seven wickets is a great achievement.”Hopefully if it does swing then the guys have made the necessary adjustments. You need to be a little more patient and a little more selective because all he really did was bowl in that channel.”He didn’t give us a lot to hit but because of the pressure they built by bowling dot balls, he didn’t go searching then we went searching and that was the difference.”When we bowled, we went searching and they didn’t have to go looking because we were serving it up to them and that is probably shown in the number of boundaries hit, especially in that partnership between (Andrew) Flintoff and (Graham) Thorpe.”We’ve got two days to turn it around.”It came back to basics and if you didn’t do them well then any side could knock you over”It starts in the nets here and that is what the guys have been trying to focus on.”If they can’t do in the nets then they are not going to do it out in the middle,” he said.

Ball claims Everton need long-term manager - Exclusive

Michael Ball insists that Everton need to appoint a manager who is in it for the long haul amid their chaotic hunt for a new boss.

The Toffees have yet to appoint a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, who has left to join Real Madrid.

They have been linked with a number of new managers, notably the former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.

However, a report from talkSPORT earlier this week suggested that talks had quietened down amid a serious backlash from fans.

Duncan Ferguson remains Ball’s preferred choice to take the role at Goodison Park but he is insistent that whomever it may be that takes the reins, they need to ensure that they can stay with the club for the next five years.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Ball said: “We need a manager who is going to be at the football club for the next three, four, five years minimum, to improve us year on year.

“We know it’s not going to be a quick fix in every summer window, so I feel Duncan or a young manager who is going to be here for the future of Everton football club is the one that Moshiri needs to start looking at.”

In addition to Benitez, Everton have also been linked with a potential move to appoint the former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
