Real Madrid’s Rodrygo dropped a masterclass against Galatasaray

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Real Madrid are slowly but surely getting back to their absolute best and that is definitely great news for their fans and terrible for their rivals.

On Wednesday night, Los Blancos welcomed Galatasaray to the Santiago Bernabeu and treated them to six goals into their net, with no reply whatsoever.

By all means, it was a statement performance by Zinedine Zidane’s men and one that could very well signal their entrance on the stage moving forward.

The start to the season was a rocky one but now, it seems that Los Blancos are finally dancing to the Frenchman’s desired tune and are looking to get even better as we move past the early stages of the campaign.

But one player who stood head and shoulders above the rest was actually the youngest one on the pitch on the night – Rodrygo Goes.

Real Madrid’s 18-year-old prodigy didn’t have the best start to the season as minutes would scarcely come his way in the first couple of outings.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

All of this changed, however, as Zidane finally realised Rodrygo is electrifyingly good whenever he’s on the pitch and with the ball in his feet.

Against Galatasaray, the youngster scored a hat-trick and registered one more assist in the process, getting himself involved in four out of six goals the Galacticos bagged on Wednesday night.

Interestingly enough, he scored three goals with three shots on target and also managed to maintain a 92.5% passing accuracy in the process as well.

All of that warranted him a perfect 10/10 rating given by WhoScored, and looking at his breathtaking performance as a whole it was a well-deserved accolade.

Now, after that clash, the youngster has a tally of six goals and one assist across all competitions in the 2019/20 season, including his ventures with Real Madrid’s B team, while he has five goals and an assist in six games for the seniors.

By all standards, it seems that Zidane has a true prodigy on his hands.

Let’s see how he handles him this season.

Angelino offers promise for Guardiola in bright Man City display at Anfield

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Manchester City’s trip to Liverpool was billed as the biggest game of the season and victory for the Reds has put them in a magnificent spot to snatch the title.

In truth, any defensive unit selected by Pep Guardiola to face Jurgen Klopp’s men was going to struggle, as Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have now racked up 21 goals between them. Plus, whoever occupied the left-back spot up against the Egyptian was set for an almighty task, whether it had been Benjamin Mendy or Oleksandr Zinchenko.

However, it was the inexperienced Angelino who stepped in for this vital clash, and unsurprisingly, the Spaniard struggled against the Golden Boot holder. Throughout the game, the left-back was exposed defensively and failed to get Salah under his control.

The former PSV Eindhoven man signed for City for £5.3m and was playing in just his ninth game for the Premier League champions.

However, going forward, the left-back showed serious attacking intent throughout. Although he lost possession 28 times and completed just one of nine crosses, Angelino was consistently threatening Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 22-year-old managed to create one big chance and made three key passes. So although he lost the ball 28 times, it is important to remember he troubled Liverpool often enough to worry the Anfield faithful.

Angelino also registered a shot which struck the woodwork for City on Sunday, and proved to Guardiola that he can be a valuable attacking weapon this season. Mendy’s troublesome record with injuries and Zinchenko’s current layoff may force in Angelino in on a more regular basis, and his display against the Reds suggested there was promise to be nurtured there.

Just because he couldn’t get hold of Salah doesn’t mean he can’t be a great asset for the champions moving forward. In truth, very few defenders struggle to contain the Egyptian.

It was another impressive attacking display from the left-back and it is important to assess his statistics in the context of the magnitude of the occasion from both an individual and collective perspective.

Sheffield Wednesday starlet Omar Damba has qualities Garry Monk’s side lack

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to get back on track with their promotion push when the international break comes to an end next week, and they can boost their chances by delving into the academy set up for an answer to one of their biggest problems.

Garry Monk’s side sit eighth in the league, three points outside of the playoff zone, having succumbed to the loss of points in back-to-back games.

Blackburn Rovers first came from behind to clinch a victory, then Swansea City salvaged a point in injury time just minutes after the Owls thought they had won it last time out.

One of the increasing problems facing the Wednesday chief is their frailty in front of goal.

Earlier in the season, it appeared as if the side had too much reliance on top goalscorer Steven Fletcher, but he’s been unable to find the net in six straight matches now, and a potential solution was found in Massimo Luongo, who netted twice in three games before he picked up an injury.

In the ten league games Monk has been in charge, the south Yorkshiremen have only scored 13 goals, and four of those came in a single game.

This week, academy striker Omar Damba was called up to the Gambia U20 squad despite not yet featuring in a senior competitive game at the club.

Might he provide an answer?

The 20-year-old has only held a professional contract at the club for 11 months, but in the summer, he was handed an opportunity to train with the first-team, according to his Instagram post per Football League World.

Former Wednesday centre-back Rob Jones played a part in his move to Hillsborough as the youngster netted a hat-trick against their U23 squad when playing for the RIASA programme, which Jones runs.

Speaking about Damba, he said: “The sky is the limit for Omar. I believe that we have only scratched the surface of his potential. As time progresses in his new environment and his focus and drive remain the same, he will have a long and fruitful career ahead of him.”

Not one striker in the Owls ranks offers any kind of threat through pace and acceleration, bearing in mind the youngest striker is Sam Winnall, who turns 29 in the New Year.

The promising forward is well worth a chance alongside a presence like Steven Fletcher, and given the club are out of the Carabao Cup, the heightened risk could pay off in their quest for promotion in the league.

Monk will also be able to start eradicating the unwanted acclaim of being the ‘oldest’ squad in the division, per Transfermarkt.

Crystal Palace: Would Odsonne Edouard be a good signing for the Eagles?

According to The Scottish Sun, Crystal Palace have identified Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard as a potential January signing, while Roy Hodgson also holds an interest in Rangers hitman Alfredo Morelos.

Edouard – who has nine goals in just four appearances for France’s U21 side – has been in exquisite form for the Bhoys this term having netted 12 times, while also registering 12 assists.

It is believed that the south Londoners are plotting a £20m swoop for the 21-year-old striker, and this report states that Edouard is the Eagles’ first-choice in terms of finding someone to ease the club’s goalscoring woes – Hodgson’s side are the second-lowest scorers in the Premier League this season with just ten goals in 12 outings.

Celtic reportedly don’t want to lose Edouard in January as they enter the Europa League knockout stages and also fight for the Scottish Premiership title.

So, would Edouard be a good signing for Palace?

Billy Meyers

“I think the Frenchman would be an excellent addition to Palace’s squad, and would also help solve more problem than just their lack of having someone to finish off chances. Edouard, along with his 12 goals, has also notched 12 assists, showcasing how he can also create chances as well as score them. As much as Palace need a goalscorer, they also need a creator just as badly having conjured up the least ‘big chances’ in the Premier League this season.

“The Eagles are also second behind only Newcastle in the xG table for least expected goals with 11.96, which is only 1.96 more than they have actually scored – in this respect, Edouard would be a shrewd capture as he has many strings to his bow rather than just goalscoring.”

Lewis Blain

“A striker this January appears to be high on Hodgson’s wishlist but the veteran manager needs to be cool and calculated about it – for too long they have had to suffer. It speaks volumes when their top goalscorer last season was defensive midfielder Luka Milivojevic as he netted 12 times, mostly from the penalty spot. This term, Christian Benteke is yet to even get off the mark while Jordan Ayew is tasked with leading the line having bagged four so far.

“However, a move for Edouard would be a huge risk. The 21-year-old may have scored 12 times in 24 appearances for Celtic with the majority coming in the Scottish Premiership – a league that just isn’t comparable to the Premier League – but he would also come with a huge weight of expectation as Palace have clearly long-desired a striker. If he were to get off to a slow start, supporters may soon turn.

“At 6 foot 2, he is in a very similar mould to one of their current flops – do they really need another Benteke?”

Harry Sherlock

“Edouard is something of an unknown quantity. Yes, he’s been scoring goals in the SPL, but what does that really mean?

“Think of the players who have made the jump from Scotland to England: the likes of Steven Naismith and Nikica Jelavic haven’t quite cut the mustard in England.  Naismith scored 20 goals in the Premier League, Jelavic hit 30 in 114 outings.

“Steven Fletcher, by comparison, scored 53 goals in 189 outings but one has to wonder which path Edouard is going to follow. It’d be a massive gamble for Palace to take, purely because it isn’t clear how those goals in Scotland will translate to England. Palace might be better off going for a proven option.”

Viji Jeevathayalan

“Make no mistake about it, Edouard would be an exciting coup for Crystal Palace. The Frenchman has comfortably stepped up following Moussa Dembele’s departure at Celtic, and has racked up an impressive 12 goals and 12 assists this season. Given the Scottish giants’ participation in European football, the 21-year-old has had the chance to play at the highest level, and that level of experience would be invaluable to an aspiring side like the Eagles.

In Celtic’s remarkable double over Lazio in the Europa League this year, Edouard notched an assist in both the home and away games. This is a man who rises to the occasion, scoring 34 goals in all competitions since the start of 2018/19, proving he is comfortably better than Benteke and Ayew. The duo have only scored a combined total of four goals in 23 games this term, with the latter scoring all four of those but only getting one in the Premier League last season.

Schalke have to resist Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Alexander Nubel

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to a new exclusive report coming from talkSPORT, Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Schalke’s 23-year-old goalkeeper, Alexander Nubel.

But the Germans should make sure their talent doesn’t leave the club just yet.

What’s the word, then?

It seems that Jose Mourinho wants a new goalkeeper in his squad and Nubel, Schalke’s young, up and coming talent, certainly looks like a juicy target for them.

This is reinforced even more with the fact that they are in serious need of another reliable man between the sticks. Hugo Lloris has been struggling with injuries and while Paulo Gazzaniga has held his own between the sticks, he simply hasn’t been as good as they would have hoped, as was explained by talkSPORT in the same report.

[ad_pod ]

Nubel, although young and very much at the beginning of his career, is already captaining his club but could be on his way out seeing how he hasn’t signed a new contract and his current one is slowly but surely running out.

And even though it makes sense for Mourinho to snatch the youngster away, for Schalke it could be disastrous.

An important piece

Needless to say, losing the captain of the ship is never really a good thing.

Schalke have been sturdy this season, having conceded just 15 goals in 12 games with Nubel between the sticks, and the 23-year-old has been a key figure in this development.

[ad_pod ]

Kevin Hatchard showered him with praise when talking to talkSPORT:

“He is the captain of Schalke and a goalkeeper in his early 20s. He is a very good goalkeeper with a [Manuel] Neuer vibe about him. He’s good with his feet, commanding, and he’s got a bit of arrogance about him which I don’t think is a terrible thing.”

Losing him now would definitely be a hugely disappointing blow for the club to take.

Schalke are currently sitting in fifth in the table, level with the team above them and just two points off second-placed Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.

And while it’s difficult actually seeing them fully contest for the crown, Nubel could play a key part in them making a mark on the Bundesliga this season already.

TalkSPORT don’t make it clear when would Spurs be hoping to snatch him away but either way, the time is not right for him to leave just yet whichever way you look at it.

They’d be wise to make his contract juicier and convince the young goalie to stay.

Meanwhile, many Spurs fans haven’t really been impressed with the club’s recent links with a young defender already plying his trade in England.
