Pela Copa Sul-Americana, deve enfrentar o Atlético-GO.

Sri Lanka finish ODI WC qualifier with spotless record after bowlers script big win in the final

Netherlands folded for 105, after being 49 for 6 at one stage, despite chasing a modest target

It was a match that didn’t matter, and yet Sri Lanka drove their point home anyway. Stung, perhaps, by needing to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup, they kept their foot on the throttle despite having qualified, dismantling Netherlands by a 128-run margin in the qualifier final.Despite a late batting collapse where they lost their last seven wickets for 53 runs, Sri Lanka were always on top as their bowlers blew Netherlands away before the chase had even begun.Related

Sri Lanka in ODIs: aye to bowlers and opening batters, nay to everything else

ODI Super League may not be dead just yet

How a re-energised Netherlands made it to the World Cup

Dilshan Madushanka did the bulk of the damage upfront as he picked up three wickets inside the ninth over, and Wanindu Hasaranga was on the job too, with two against his name by the 12th over. Maheesh Theekshana then took over, picking up four wickets to skittle Netherlands for 105. That meant Sri Lanka had won the qualifying event without losing a single match. Both finalists, of course, had already qualified for the ODI World Cup, to be held in India later this year.Fresh from the high of a scintillating chase against Scotland, Netherlands opted to field first again. Vikramjit Singh struck either side of the first powerplay to remove both openers after a sedate start, but Kusal Mendis and Sahan Arachchige consolidated over the next 13 overs. The scoring rate went up and so did Sri Lanka’s dominance in the game with little on offer from the pitch for the bowlers. The batters used the sweep liberally against the spin bowlers, especially leggie Saqib Zulfiqar, but when Mendis missed a straight one, Netherlands had their breakthrough.Arachchige brought up a half-century, while Charith Asalanka’s run-a-ball 36 began to set Sri Lanka up for the finish, but a staggering collapse helped Netherlands storm back into the contest.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

A sharp catch by Logan van Beek at point brought an end to Arachchige’s innings before Asalanka was run-out two deliveries later. Netherlands broke through Dasun Shanaka and Dhananjaya de Silva to burrow into Sri Lanka’s tail, and only a cameo from Hasaranga helped them cross 200. But another flurry of quick wickets at the death brought an end to that stand, and Netherlands had 234 to chase. The first few overs were as good as it got for them in the chase, as they racked up 25 in 4.3 overs. But when Vikramjit carved a straight one to cover-point, the floodgates opened. Madushanka cleaned up Wesley Barresi, before Hasaranga trapped Teja Nidamanuru in front. Netherlands were shaken as captain Scott Edwards fell to a careless run-out, and they were suddenly down at 49 for 6.Max O’Dowd hung around gamely to ensure the total edged towards three figures, but Sri Lanka had already dispatched with the opposition. Theekshana returned to beat O’Dowd’s outside edge and knock back his off stump after a gritty 36-run partnership with van Beek. It was the first of four as Theekshana took up the role of mopper-up, trapping each of the last three in front as the World Cup-bound Netherlands folded for 105.These two sides will meet again in a more important contest in India, when Edwards will hope his side can give a fairer account of themselves.

Labuschagne produces more super-sub heroics; Cameron Green ruled out for eight days with concussion

Australia’s selectors might give Marnus Labuschagne’s mother Alta a call to get some insight into how the next three months of ODI cricket will unfold, after she correctly predicted that her son would play in Bloemfontein, where he saved Australia’s blushes as the supersub again through the most unlikely set of circumstances.Labuschagne made 80 not out to guide Australia home to a three-wicket win chasing just 223 after replacing Cameron Green as the concussion substitute.Green was hit behind the left ear when he ducked into a Kagiso Rabada bouncer off the second ball he faced after walking out at No. 4 for the first time in his ODI career. Green retired hurt and didn’t return. Cricket Australia confirmed he had a precautionary scan and will now enter an eight-day concussion protocol where he will be monitored daily by the medical staff. He is not going to be available to play again until at least the last match of the series on September 17.Related

Labuschagne's lack of consistency puts paid to WC hopes

Labuschagne was initially left out of the ODI squad to tour South Africa and Australia’s provisional 15-man World Cup squad having averaged just 22.30 and struck at a lowly 69.87 over his previous 14 ODI innings dating back to April 2022, and had admitted he “wasn’t too shocked” he was dropped, when speaking in the aftermath of his sensational 80 not out on return. But as Labuschagne was preparing to play some 50-over matches for Australia A against New Zealand A in Queensland, which start this week, a wrist tendon injury to Steven Smith saw him getting called up to South Africa as cover for that series.Even then it appeared like he was just getting a free trip to South Africa to visit family as he was listed 15th on Australia’s team sheet for the first ODI, behind Tim David and Aaron Hardie. But despite all evidence to the contrary, Alta Labuschagne stayed at the ground in Bloemfontein for the entirety of Australia’s bowling innings and the start of the chase and was proven right. Green was hit in the head in the sixth over of Australia’s reply. Five overs later, Australia confirmed Labuschagne would be the concussion sub for Green, as he famously was for Smith at Lord’s in the second Ashes Test in 2019. And one over later he was out in the middle at No. 7 with Australia in dire straits at 72 for 5. From there he guided his side home with a classy 93-ball innings, looking every bit the world-class player he has been at Test level.”She’s an amazing woman,” Labuschagne said of his mother’s premonition. “She stayed for the whole game. Even though I wasn’t playing for the first three-and-a-half hours of the game. She had a feeling. She was adamant when I came here that I was going to play this game. And I told her, ‘I’ve seen the team, Mum, I’m not in the team’. She just got a feeling and, once again, she’s right. It’s hard to describe, to be honest.”Labuschagne’s innings will undoubtedly cause some external discussions around his omission from Australia’s World Cup squad. But Labuschagne was having none of it, taking full responsibility for his recent ODI form and being completely understanding of the reasons behind his omission.”I have been really disappointed with how I’ve played my one-day cricket, the last 10 to 12 games I felt like I haven’t shown the intensity and the courage that I would have liked,” he said. “I wasn’t too shocked when I was dropped. I said that to the selectors, I said, ‘I understand I haven’t made runs’. But I did say that I still want to be that person for you batting in the middle order. And then you’ve just got to sit tight and wait for your opportunity. And when the opportunity comes, you’ve got to be ready.”Ready he was, just like he was at Lord’s. Labuschagne revealed he only took three or four days off after the gruelling Ashes series and was straight back into the nets working on his white-ball deficiencies. That work immediately paid dividends. He admitted the lowering of expectations, both personally and externally, does help when entering as a concussion sub. But even with that, his performance was extraordinary. On a surface where every player struggled at times to find rhythm and timing, including South Africa captain Temba Bavuma during his outstanding unbeaten century, Labuschagne’s timing was sublime from the outset racing to 34 off his first 20 balls without really taking a risk.Marnus Labuschagne famously walked out as a concussion sub for Steven Smith and scored a battling half-century in the 2019 Lord’s Test•Getty Images

“It comes (down) to your training, I always pride myself on training well, and making sure I’m always ready,” Labuschagne said. “The opportunity that happens when you’re a concussion sub is sometimes a little bit of a free hit because the pressure of the game is out there but obviously the expectation is probably not as much on you.”He got outstanding support from Ashton Agar, who made his highest ODI score of 48 not out to help Labuschagne guide Australia home, reinforcing the selectors’ desire to have an XI that bats as deep as possible. It was just Agar’s third score above 30 in an ODI but he has recently been working diligently on simplifying his batting and his mental approach and that work was also evident. It is unlikely Australia’s selectors will second guess their initial decision to leave Labuschagne out of the World Cup squad but his performance, alongside Agar’s, will give them enormous confidence in their bench strength which continues to flex its muscle as South Africa white-ball coach Rob Walter lamented after the T20I series.Australia’s injury toll remains a concern, with Green now added to the list of concerns alongside Smith, Glenn Maxwell (ankle), Pat Cummins (wrist) and Mitchell Starc (groin) ahead of the World Cup.Labuschagne proved he is ready to go at a moment’s notice and a man for a crisis, particularly on difficult pitches. His mum might tell him to keep his passport within arm’s reach at all times as the World Cup draws closer.

DRAGÃO NO ALTO

No entanto, o argentino estava impedido no lance, e Daronco anulou.

O 17º no Brasileirão.

RUBRO-NEGRO DESCONTA

FICOU NO QUASE

LEI DO EX!

One eye on the prize, the other on the sky as India take on Sri Lanka in Asia Cup final

Theekshana and Axar’s injuries leave both teams with a problem to solve ahead of the big clash

Manjrekar: A fit Iyer will have to wait his turn

Big picture: Watch out for spin and rainThe continent’s crown jewel is on the line, but the two teams fighting for it come into the final with different motivations. India have not lifted any multi-team trophy since their Asia Cup win in 2018, and are desperate to know how that feels. Sri Lanka, ODI ranking No. 8, want to drill it in that despite making the ODI World Cup only through the qualifiers, they are more than just dark horses.Hosts Sri Lanka possess the template to defeat India, because they very nearly did so last week. They had bowled India out for 213 – all ten wickets taken by spinners, including four by a part-time offspinner – and were favourites at the halfway stage. But their top-order let them down. Rattled by India’s pace, they could never really recover. With a slow, turning surface expected for Sunday, Sri Lanka’s best bet would be to follow that bowling plan, topped up with a better batting show. Going their way is a strong performance in a challenging chase against Pakistan in the virtual semi-final, but that was a batting-friendly surface. They will sorely miss the injured Maheesh Theekshana, a wicket-taking threat at every stage of an ODI innings.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

India come into the final on the back of a defeat, but with key players resting for the Bangladesh game, that result may not be of much significance. Every batter in their first XI has at least one big score while their bowlers look in great rhythm. Their balance, though, will be tested with the allrounder Axar Patel also ruled out with a hamstring niggle. All that planning will matter for very little if the weather doesn’t hold up. A shortened match or a washout are both possible since weather forecasts predict rain on Sunday (and Monday, the reserve day).Form guideIndia LWWWW (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)
Sri Lanka WLWWWIn the spotlight: Mendis, Thakur and WashingtonKusal Mendis has been enjoying a purple patch as Sri Lanka’s No. 3. With 253 runs in five games, he is the second-highest run-scorer of the series and his three fifties have come in wins over Pakistan (91), Bangladesh (50), and Afghanistan (92). A good score against India – ideally a century having been dismissed in the nineties twice – is the only thing missing from his Asia Cup 2023 CV.Will Shardul Thakur or Washington Sundar be India’s No. 8? With Axar ruled out, India need to allocate his overs to someone else, preferably another spinner if the surface stays as expected. That makes Washington a favourite with his offbreaks a good match-up against Sri Lanka’s left-hand batters. But Washington only flew in from Bengaluru on Friday, and Shardul has been in Sri Lanka all along, making key contributions with the ball. India have an important call to make on match day.2:29

Can Sri Lanka cope without Theekshana in final?

Team news: Tilak in the final for India? If India go with Thakur at No. 8, then Tilak Varma could be selected for his role as a third spin-bowling option.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 KL Rahul (wk), 5 Ishan Kishan/Tilak Varma, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Shardul Thakur/Washington Sundar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Jasprit BumrahFor Sri Lanka, legspinner Dushan Hemantha is the favourite to replace Theekshana. They could also bring in allrounder Sahan Arachchige, but Hemantha has stronger bowling credentials. Kusal Perera should keep his place in the XI.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Kusal Mendis (wk), 4 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 5 Charith Asalanka, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Dasun Shanaka (capt), 8 Dunith Wellalage, 9 Dushan Hemantha, 10 Matheesha Pathirana, 11 Kasun RajithaRelated

As the snow on the higher peaks melted under the sun in perfect weather for cricket, Australia’s nets in Dharamsala suggested they were ever closer to playing a full-strength XI for the first time in this ODI World Cup.Travid Head, who narrowly missed out on the last game recovering from a broken left hand, batted in the nets for about 20 minutes without discernible discomfort, and had a bowl too. Marcus Stoinis, who missed the last match with a sore calf, had a long bowling stint and a decent hit towards the end of their session. However, Australia captain Pat Cummins finished his press conference before the training so there is no confirmation either of them will be back for the match against New Zealand. Yet he didn’t shy away from what has become a bit of a thorny topic since the last match: where does Head bat when he comes back, and consequently where does Mitchell Marsh bat?Related

Smith, though, said after the last match that he was “a bit shocked” when told he would have to move down to No. 4.”It’s a different sort of mindset I think, when you come in at 3 to 4,” Smith had said. “So yeah, I got told if Trav was playing that I was going to be batting 4. I’ll do whatever the team wants. I’ve got a pretty good record at three, so I was a bit shocked in a way, but I’ll do what I need to for the team.Cummins said Smith didn’t take much convincing to agree to the switch. “I think he said himself, do whatever is best for the team,” Cummins said. “And Trav’s been amazing [at the top of the order] over the last 12 months. Mitch Marsh at the top has been amazing. Davey Warner’s obviously a superstar up there.”We think that’s the best way to set up the team and we’re really excited with how the batting line-up looks like. No, it’s been fine. We all do some roles that maybe is not your preference but it’s what’s best for the team so it’s fine.”They might only now be getting close to getting their best personnel together, but Cummins believes Australia have nailed the way they want to play after a slow start.”Our group’s big on talking about the style that we want to play,” Cummins said. “I think in the first two games not only did we not win, but I think we didn’t really nail the style that we wanted to play. In the last few games you’ve seen us be a bit more aggressive: batting and bowling. Bowling, everyone’s been really open-minded, tried different things; trying bouncers, different fields, one-over spells and it’s just been a real buy-in from the whole team, and yeah, it’s been fantastic last few games. That’s a standard we want to keep going with for the rest of the tournament.”
