Liverpool’s midfield has one major question mark, says Danny Mills

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Danny Mills has questioned Liverpool’s midfield, raising concerns over their lack of creativity and goal threat.

What’s he said?

Speaking to Sky Sports (October 2, 11:26am), the former Leeds United and Manchester City man questioned the lack of attacking prowess in Jurgen Klopp’s favoured midfield trio.

“That three as it stands at the moment, with Henderson, Fabinho, and Wijnaldum, is there enough creativity in that?

“Is there enough goals in that? Wijnaldum might get a few, we’ve seen that. Henderson I don’t think is going to score too many. Fabinho is not going to score too many, and also they’re not going to create.”

Thanks Sherlock

It’s hard to disagree with Mills purely from a factual perspective – Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho combined for just five goals and five assists last season in the Premier League, or ten direct goal contributions.

To put that into perspective, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne already has two league goals and eight assists this campaign from a position on the right side of the Citizens’ midfield three, matching the Reds trio’s output from all of last year.

However, Liverpool are not designed to get goals and assists from midfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson produce most of the chances with 23 league assists between them last term, while the front three do all the goalscoring.

Combining the last two seasons with the beginning of this campaign, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have scored a truly ridiculous 124 top-flight goals. That’s the equivalent of having two 30-goal strikers each year who have then grabbed two each at the beginning of this season.

So, while Mills is correct, Klopp’s workhorse midfield is poor at creating and scoring goals, that simply isn’t what they are in the team to do, nor do they need to do it to be successful.

Maybe it’s because he’s a former Man City player or maybe he simply hasn’t watched Liverpool enough, but this seems a really pointless and somewhat bizarre observation from Detective Sherlock Mills.

David Unsworth reveals Marcel Brands working hard to implement B teams

Everton U23’s manager David Unsworth has joined the club’s director of football Marcel Brands in helping to push for Premier League clubs to form B-teams down in the lower divisions of professional football.

What did he say?

Previously, Brands pushed for this system to be used when he was at Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven. Eventually, a development side called Jong PSV joined the likes of Jong AZ, Jong Utrecht, and Jong Ajax as ‘B-teams’ in the Eerste Divisie – the country’s second tier.

Unsworth, himself a huge believer in this idea, is working with Brands to help push for a similar system in English football.

The former Toffees player told the Liverpool ECHO: “He was the main voice, from what he tells me, about bringing it in. I know he’s had meetings about it. He’s a massive, massive advocate – very similar to myself – of B-teams. I don’t know if it will ever happen.

“If I was going to offer anything, it would be that I’m not really bothered at what level you throw us in at because we can work our way up and that’s the challenge to the under-23s team.”

It makes sense, doesn’t it?

As is the case in Holland, clubs’ second teams such as Jong Ajax and Jong PSV are ineligible for playoffs, promotion and the KNVB Cup – the Dutch equivalent of the FA Cup. The maximum age of a player is 23, and those who have made more than 150 appearances for the first-team are unable to play.

Rules as such would be an essential addition if this were to take place in England. It would prevent super clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City from sending star players down to the B-teams who could potentially make easy work of the league.

For example, Marcus Rashford is still only 21, but as he has played 178 appearances for Manchester United’s first-team, he would be ineligible to play for the development squad and subsequently force the likes of Mason Greenwood to play there instead.

In recent times – especially this season – we have seen many young English talents breakout in the Premier League and force themselves into the England setup, like Fikayo Tomori.

However, players such as Phil Foden, who Pep Guardiola recently apologised to over a lack of game time, still cannot mark their mark on the first-team, despite their obvious talents.

There is, however, the unfortunate possibility it could make things tougher for Football League sides. No doubt it would be harder for teams to loan Premier League youngsters, as the parent club would most likely settle for them playing at the development squad instead. Teams lower down often depend on loaning young talent, as they struggle to acquire their own usually because of finances.

For example, the likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount of Chelsea respectively helped Aston Villa and Derby County reach the playoffs last season. Had the B-team structure been in place, perhaps those clubs may not have loaned those players.

Although, when all considered, it seems like a revolutionary idea for English football. Currently, we are witnessing the likes of Rhian Brewster, who won the U17 World Cup Golden Ball and Golden Boot, either warm the Liverpool bench or play for academy sides.

If he were to join a reserve team in a lower league, perhaps Brewster could build on his exceptional start to his career, as he is now 19 and still yet to make his Premier League debut.

Leeds have a serious problem if Marcelo Bielsa fails to change his methods

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Do you know the saying about ‘those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it’?

Well when you look it up next time, there’s a good chance that you’ll see a picture of Marcelo Bielsa staring back at you.

You’d think that games like the one at home to Wigan Athletic last season, when a team that was fighting relegation and reduced to ten men only to come and win it would have been enough to prove to him that there are no easy games in this division.

However, it looks as if Biela’s stubbornness and refusal to change his style of play have ended up costing him again.

Regardless of whether or not they feel that the red card in the first half was fair or not, if Leeds are a team that have serious aspirations of getting promoted, perhaps it’s time for Bielsa to start taking this league a little more seriously.

If he and Leeds find themselves in a situation where they cannot beat a team that were near the bottom of the table, who haven’t won a game since the middle of August and who lost their boss two days before the game, regardless of the ‘new manager bounce’, then you have to question just how seriously the Argentinian is taking this division.

Compare Leeds’ performance on the weekend to how Fulham played them a couple of months ago.

Scott Parker and his team saw there was a weak team to be exploited and tore them apart on the night, with 935 successful passes and 84% possession.

He has spoken before about how he likes to carry a thin squad, well this game clearly tells you that when you start a player who is predominantly a full-back at centre-back that you can’t just rely on your attacking ability to get you out of a jam.

This is why you need to have strength in depth, something else he should have learned last year during their injury crisis. Alas, he failed to learn from that this summer as they only brought in six players on loan while losing 31 either on a temporary or permanent basis.

There is still a lot of the season left to play, and whilst they are only two points off the top of the table right now, it will remain to be seen whether or not they have the capacity, both on the pitch and in the dugout, to stay near the top as the season progresses.

Something has to give, and it might just be Bielsa’s methods.

Man Utd academy prospect Brandon Williams is on course to overtake Luke Shaw

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

Mason Greenwood may be the undoubted star in the making at the moment, but Manchester United have a clutch of promising youngsters waiting patiently in the wings for their break-out moments. The Old Trafford faithful have already seen a bit of Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes this season, but one man who could eclipse them all is Brandon Williams.

Not the most heralded academy prodigy out of the group the Red Devils currently possess, but the player with arguably the biggest chance of stamping his mark on the first-team this season. The 19-year-old completed his first full 90 minutes of the campaign in the Europa League against AZ Alkmaar earlier this month, and according to some United fans, was one of the few silver linings of a drab 0-0 draw.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

As a right-footed left-back, Williams is in the mould of United stalwart Denis Irwin, and speaking after the game against the Dutch side, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid him a remarkable compliment.

“Top class, absolutely top notch. You won’t see a better full debut from a full-back anywhere. The boy is just going to improve and improve. He’s got the right mentality. I’m very pleased for him.”

Those comments will be music to the teenager’s ears, particularly with the Manchester side’s current struggles in his favoured position. First-choice left-back Luke Shaw has been out of action since mid-August with a hamstring injury, and whilst recent reports suggests he is in line to make a return sooner rather than later, Solskjaer may do well to hold off from throwing him back into the side.

The England international has had a career beset by injuries, and has missed 103 games for United since signing from Southampton. There is absolutely no way for the Red Devils to wholeheartedly place their trust in the £27m-rated man, and that no doubt opens the door for Williams to seize his opportunity.

An injury-prone Shaw, and a make-shift defender in a 34-year-old Ashley Young, are his only real competitors at left-back. If Williams continues to impress in training, circumstances will surely dictate that he gets a run of games to show what he can do. And, judging by what Solskjaer thought of his full debut, there is no reason why he can’t be the academy prospect to make the most immediate mark on the team.

Rangers’ Jermain Defoe reveals the one goal he wishes he’d scored

Jermain Defoe has scored some incredible goals throughout his career.

His volley against Newcastle for Sunderland back in 2015 will go down as one of the greatest strikes in Tyne-Wear derby history, and his incredible strike against Crystal Palace for Bournemouth earned him a Goal of the Month award.

Watch Rangers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Rangers striker knows what it’s like to net a spectacular strike, but there’s one goal in Premier League history that he wishes he could have scored himself.

Indeed, Defoe wishes he could have netted Ian Wright’s legendary effort against Everton.

You can see why the former England international is such an admirer of the Arsenal man’s goal, as Wright uses an excellent combination of pace, skill and technique to beat his man, get into position and finally chip the keeper.

With Defoe topping the scoring charts in Scotland this season there’s no reason why he can’t emulate this goal over the coming months while playing for Rangers, and if he did it would certainly be a Goal of the Season contender.
