The defending champions were left shocked last week at Emirates Stadium as Arsenal beat them 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final fixture. Declan Rice converted two stunning free kicks, while Mikel Merino scored the third as the Gunners took a huge leap to book their berth in the last-four stage.

As Real Madrid face an uphill battle in the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu, manager Ancelotti has urged his players to play the match with 'heart and balls' and give a tough fight to the Premier League giants. He also refuted rumours regarding his future at the club, as he denied that elimination from the Champions League would result in his sacking.

WHAT CARLO ANCELOTTI SAID

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Italian coach told reporters, "We need to play the game with a lot of heart and balls."

He then added, "I don’t think this Arsenal game will impact my future at Real Madrid. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. Keep your head cold, keep going. It’s not my first big game, and I hope it will NOT be the last one. I’m excited."

After facing Mikel Arteta's side on Wednesday, Los Blancos will be back in action in La Liga on April 20 as they take on Athletic Club in a crucial home fixture.

Man City ready to launch ÂŁ54m bid to sign ideal Kyle Walker replacement

Manchester City are set to confirm the departure of captain Kyle Walker, and the Blues are not waiting around to find his replacement, as they are ready to submit a ÂŁ54 million offer for a defender, according to a new report.

Man City transfer news

Given how the 2024/25 season has gone for City, it is no surprise to see how busy they have been so far in this transfer window. Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov have already joined, and they have now been boosted by Omar Marmoush, who signed for the Premier League champions on Thursday morning.

Better than Luiz: Man City could sign a "world-class" ÂŁ67m star instead

Manchester City could make an even better signing than Douglas Luiz.

ByConnor Holden Jan 23, 2025

After putting pen to paper on his contract, Marmoush spoke of his “delight” in joining City: “This is a day I will never forget. I am delighted, my family are so proud, and we are all very happy to be here in Manchester.

“With Pep, his technical staff, and the world-class facilities here, players have everything they need to become better. That was really enticing for me – and I cannot deny I also want to win trophies.”

The Blues don’t appear to be stopping there after another disappointing evening against PSG this week, as they are also closing in on the signing of Juma Bah, who is expected to be sent out on loan for the second half of this season.

As well as looking at players to sign this month, City also have their eye on the summer transfer window, and according to TEAMtalk, have moved into pole position to sign Joshua Kimmich from Bayern Munich when his contract expires at the end of the campaign.

Man City ready to launch £54m bid to sign Walker replacement

Kyle Walker is now closing in on his loan move to AC Milan, and it hasn’t taken City long to find his replacement, as according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Man City are ready to launch a bid for Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso.

Andrea Cambiaso in action for Juventus.

The report states that it is a matter of “when” not “if” City make a move for Cambiaso, and the Blues plan to table an offer worth €65 million, which is roughly ÂŁ54 million, in the next 24 hours.

However, this could be turned down, as it’s been claimed that Juventus are looking to get €80 million for the defender. The Old Lady are not actively looking to sell Cambiaso, but his sale could allow them to enter the market for arrivals of their own.

Cambiaso has been labelled “versatile” by commentator Leonardo Bertozzi in the past, while Peter Young of Football Italia has praised the Italian’s ability to play on either side of a back four. Therefore, his potential arrival at the Etihad makes for an exciting signing and one who would be expected to flourish under Pep Guardiola, given how the Spaniard likes to have players who can play in multiple positions.

However, given Walker’s exit to AC Milan, Cambiaso’s arrival would surely see him become City’s regular right-back, especially as Guardiola keeps having to rely on Matheus Nunes to play in defence, and as shown against PSG on Wednesday night, it is not working for the Blues.

Kulusevski’s dream teammate: Spurs ramp up bid to sign England international

We’re only in January, and Tottenham Hotspur’s season already depends on the cup competitions.

Ange Postecoglou’s side has been absolutely devastated by injuries this year, and while the Australian can certainly end the campaign with a trophy, that feels very unlikely indeed.

However, while there has not been much for Spurs fans to cheer about, one undeniable positive has been the development of Dejan Kulusevski.

The former Juventus ace has always been an important player for the North Londoners, but he has come on leaps and bounds this year, and based on recent reports, the club are looking to bring in an England international who could help him get even better.

Tottenham target England ace

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Tottenham have ‘ramped up their own bid’ to sign LOSC Lille star Angel Gomes.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report has revealed that the North Londoners have entered the race to sign the England international and could now beat fellow Premier League side West Ham United to the midfielder’s signature.

The good news is that the Lilywhites should be able to sign the former Manchester United prospect for free due to his ÂŁ11k-per-week contract expiring in the summer, but the bad news is that he won’t be able to officially join until then either.

It could still be a complicated transfer to get over the line if the Irons step up their pursuit of other teams entering the fray, but given Gomes’ ability, Spurs should be doing all they can to secure this deal as soon as possible, especially as he’d be an ideal teammate for Kulusevski.

Why Gomes would be a dream teammate for Kulusevski

Okay, so if Kulusevski’s long-term role at Spurs is going to be that of one of the more attacking midfielders in the team, then there are a couple of reasons why Gomes would be an excellent teammate for him.

The first is that, as the Englishman is adept at playing in central and attacking midfield himself, he’ll be the player who can adjust his starting role to platform and allow the Swede to further hone his skills in that more offensive role in the middle of the park.

Moreover, due to his ability to play deeper, the “top quality” talent, as dubbed by former Spurs keeper Paul Robinson, is no stranger to defensive duties, as shown by the fact FBref places him in the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers for shots blocked in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League per 90.

However, he’s not just there to do the mopping up.

He is more than capable of dictating play, firing off dangerous passes and taking on opponents, as shown by FBref placing him in the top 1% for pass completion and successful take-on percentage, the top 3% for carries, the top4% for passes into the final third, the top 6% for progressive passes, switches and more, all per 90.

Not only do these statistics suggest that the Edmonton-born star would be able to play intricate passes into Kulusevski when he’s in dangerous positions, but it would also make him a player that opposing defenders would have to mark more proactively, thus naturally opening up more space for his future teammates.

Finally, the 24-year-old has already shown that he has a tough mentality, as he made the bold decision to leave Old Trafford in 2020 and back himself to earn a move from Portugal to a top-five league and now potentially back to the Premier League, all while breaking into the England setup, which is just the sort of player who’d improve the dressing room at Spurs.

Ultimately, signing Gomes this year feels like a total no-brainer for Tottenham, as his skill set and ability would undoubtedly improve the entire team, let alone Kulusevski.

Kyle Abbott's three wickets in 13 balls makes it game on at Scarborough

Tattersall, Lyth fifties ensure Yorkshire survive another day

Paul Edwards27-Jul-2022
The One-Stop Shop on North Marine Road, Tuesday morning, around 7.20am: “Where’s , please?””Sorry, the papers aren’t in yet.”Two minutes later. Someone else: “A , please.””Sorry, but the papers haven’t arrived yet.Such customers have White Roses on their sunhats or track-suit tops. They have long known where their loyalties are situated. And there are many more than two of them.Such snapshots of life offer a fitting prelude to the days we have enjoyed at Scarborough this week. They also help to show why the fifties made by Adam Lyth and Jonny Tattersall were so warmly received by most of the crowd at North Marine Road today. For one thing they increased Yorkshire’s chances of winning the game; for another they made it certain there would be cricket to watch tomorrow.Things hadn’t always been so clear. Yorkshire had conceded a 59-run first-innings lead and for a gloomy hour or so on Tuesday evening and again early in the first session today spectators at Scarborough were seized with the dreadful thought that this game might end in three days. This has happened here before and it’s always left home supporters in something of a quandary. What could they do with their free day? The Clock CafĂ© and The Rose Garden? Possibly. The Heritage Railway? Maybe. Hairy Bob’s Skatepark? Surely not. Those options need not be explored now. They were removed today by the extraordinary diligence of Yorkshire’s top- and middle-order, almost all of whom sold their wickets at a high price against the most varied and inquisitorial attack in the country. But Hampshire’s title credentials were slapped on the table late this evening when Kyle Abbott took three wickets in 13 balls and only a loopy last-wicket stand of 30 between Ben Coad and Steve Patterson hoisted their side’s lead above 200. As it turned out, Hampshire required 214 to win a vital match in their quest for a third title and they had trimmed nine runs off that total in three overs by the close. It is game on at Scarborough. But almost regardless of the result tomorrow, home spectators will recall and cherish their memories of Lyth and Tattersall putting on 53 for the fourth wicket and then Matthew Waite helping Tattersall add another 78 for the fifth. That trio’s efforts and those of their colleagues were helped, though, by some uncharacteristically sloppy cricket by Hampshire, who put down six chances, five of them in the wicketkeeper and slip cordon. The first drop, and perhaps the most significant, occurred in the second over of the morning, when Joe Weatherley spilled a sharp catch off Abbott when Lyth was only 14.Five overs later, some of Abbott’s anger was assuaged when he had Tom Kohler-Cadmore caught for 19 via the inside-edge by Ben Brown. And when Ian Holland nipped a ball away from Will Fraine’s bat and into the off stump, Yorkshire were three down and had a lead of just seven. At which point Lyth and Tattersall got their nuts down and grafted like stink. And as so often at the great grounds, the cricket acquired an intensity that was reciprocal with the concentration of those watching. Two or three overs would pass with barely a murmur from the crowd – except some forthright mockery of Hampshire’s more hopeful leg before appeals. Then a boundary from Lyth would prompt some fond applause and the crowd would settle again, almost in concert with the cricketers. Shortly before lunch the opener reached his fifty off 138 balls; he had been batting for two minutes short of three hours. At lunch Yorkshire were 98 for 3; they had scored 75 runs in 33 overs against an all-seam attack. We wondered when Liam Dawson might be given a spell. The afternoon session began with errors. In successive overs Tattersall was dropped on 24 by Brown when he edged the ball low to the keeper’s right and Lyth was dropped by James Vince at first slip off Abbott. The opener, who played his club cricket at Scarborough, eventually departed for 59 to a leg-side strangle off James Fuller, but Waite and Tattersall batted with a care the old sweats on the pavilion balcony could only admire. When the players came in for tea, Yorkshire’s lead was 126 and they still had six wickets in hand but the new ball was due on the resumption and that was to make all the difference.Title-winning sides win cricket matches even when their own performances are unsatisfactory and perhaps it will be so with Hampshire this week. Undaunted by his fielders’ sudden vulnerabilities, Mohammad Abbas bowled Waite through the gate for 47 and then had Tattersall taken by Holland at fourth slip for an accomplished 63. Matthew Revis drove the ball pleasantly but he became one of Abbott’s three victims as the match changed again. The South African thus completed match figures of ten for 113 but may have been in the shower or ice-bath when Holland and Felix Organ dealt with the last three overs of a fine day’s cricket, its richness made all the greater by the promise it offered for the morrow.Hairy Bob will have to wait.

Chelsea set sights on signing another Premier League gem alongside Garnacho

Once again turning their attention towards future stars, Chelsea have reportedly set their sights on signing another Premier League gem alongside Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho this month.

Chelsea transfer news

A side building for years to come, a young Chelsea squad are beginning to fall away from their early season form as defeat at the hands of struggling champions Manchester City exposed for all to see.

Despite taking the lead within the first three minutes through Noni Madueke, who took full advantage of Abdukodir Khusanov’s nightmare start in a Man City shirt, Chelsea eventually found themselves on the end of a 3-1 defeat with another Robert Sanchez mistake at the heart of proceedings.

Such a defeat won’t stand in the way of Chelsea’s transfer plans this month, however, with Garnacho the name threatening to steal the headlines. Out of favour at Manchester United, a swap deal between himself and Christopher Nkunku has reportedly been discussed, which would see the Blues kill two birds with one stone.

It’s then at Stamford Bridge that Garnacho could be joined by another young Premier League talent. According to reports in Spain, Chelsea now want to sign Jermy Monga from Leicester City in another move with the future in mind.

Not just Sanchez: Maresca must now drop 4/10 Chelsea star who got 'bullied'

Chelsea were poor defensively against Man City

ByJoe Nuttall Jan 25, 2025

Still just 15 years old, Monga is quite the prospect and perhaps the future of Chelsea’s attack should they get their deal over the line. Appearing for Leicester’s U18s this season – scoring once and assisting three times in four appearances – the teenager is ahead of schedule in his development and seemingly destined for the top.

In one swoop, Chelsea could land two wingers capable of playing a part for years to come at Stamford Bridge with Monga eventually joining what would be a Garnacho at the peak of his powers when he’s ready for senior football on a consistent basis.

Monga is one to watch

Throughout Premier League history, Stamford Bridge has been the place to be for young players. Whether it’s been John Terry, Frank Lampard or now Cole Palmer, all made the switch to join up with the West London club at a young age before stealing the show in their own rights. Now, Monga could follow that same path from Leicester to Chelsea glory.

Cole Palmer

The young winger is certainly one to watch given his current trajectory and when the time comes, he’ll have quite the decision to make regarding his future. There’s undoubtedly space in Chelsea’s youth side for a starring winger these days too following the exit of Rio Ngumoha to Liverpool last summer.

By signing Monga, those at Stamford Bridge could be instantly making up for Ngumoha’s exit, which looks likely to become their latest transfer regret as he continues to progress at Anfield.

Maintaining their transfer policy, Chelsea are gradually transforming into a side to be feared with several stars destined to have their say for years to come in the Premier League.

Yorkshire block for survival as Roses rivalry takes on an autumnal feel

Pragmatic refusal of risky chase annoys Lancashire but improves survival prospects

Paul Edwards08-Sep-2022
The 277th Roses match ended at Emirates Old Trafford this evening when rain interrupted Yorkshire’s studious non-pursuit of 302 in 84 overs to beat Lancashire. Rarely can a county have shown so little interest in a target. When the players came off the field for the final time, the visitors were 102 for 3 after 63.2 overs with Tom Kohler-Cadmore on 34 not out after resisting 159 balls and Will Fraine unbeaten on 18 after blocking to death 83 deliveries. It was a low-key conclusion to a match that had been significantly interrupted on its first three days and played on a sleepy pitch whose lifelessness was only truly transcended by the brilliance of Luke Wells on the third afternoon. However, context is all and Yorkshire coach Ottis Gibson was quick to defend his side after a result that keeps them in sixth place in Division One, 25 points ahead of eleventh-placed Warwickshire with both teams having three games to play. In other words, Gibson’s team are not yet safe from relegation but they are a damn sight safer than they would have been if they had risked a dart at the target with an under-strength batting order and cocked the job up. Did the fourth innings of this game make for tough watching at times? Certainly. Did it make tactical sense in the context of a six-month season. Yes to that, too.Understandably, perhaps, Lancashire’s head coach, Glen Chapple took a different view. “We set them 302 in 84 overs which for me is 50-50 game,” he said. “I don’t know what more you can do. It was a flat enough pitch to block if you wanted to but that was a fair target. We’d have got 300 on that no problem, but we can’t judge how positive teams are going to be.””I’m proud of the lads with the way we batted today,” Gibson responded. “Another team could have capitulated today.”But maybe we could all profit in these fervid times from celebrating a game that is comfortable with contrasting tempi and diverse formats. “It is on T20 nights like these where…the true Roses match increasingly resides,” wrote my colleague David Hopps in June as he reviewed Lancashire’s four-run victory in the Vitality Blast. Perhaps so, but maybe the indefinite article would have been a wiser word-choice.For while the Roses match does, indeed, have a secure home on those hot summer nights, it also belongs to this late afternoon in early September with Championship points at stake, rain threatening and spinners like Tom Hartley and Matt Parkinson probing like malevolent dentists. Blast or Champo? It is not a binary choice. Help yourself to both and let us hope the current integrity of both competitions is not polluted by unnecessary reform, well-meaning or otherwise. And the crowd at Emirates Old Trafford did have some biff and bang to amuse them on this high-clouded Mancunian day. That was on offer when Lancashire scored 77 runs in ten overs before the declaration this morning for the loss of Dane Vilas, bowled by Dom Bess for 28, and George Lavelle, caught by Will Fraine off Jonny Tattersall for a single. However, the home side’s batting order has had a vaguely Hanoverian aspect of late, so George Balderson succeeded Lavelle on a day that had already seen Vilas shovel the ball directly behind him and Tattersall take the second – and last? – first-class wicket of his career. The random eccentricities continued when Lyth was dropped at short-leg by Josh Bohannon off the first ball of Yorkshire’s innings but neither the suffering bowler, Tom Bailey, nor Will Williams could make any immediate breakthroughs with the new ball. Indeed, it was the 12th over before Lyth’s careless drive nicked a catch to Lavelle and Lancashire’s morning got much better twenty minutes later when George Hill edged Tom Hartley to second slip, where Vilas took a sharp catch. In retrospect, though, Yorkshire’s lunch score of 30 for two represented their weakest moment of the day. For over an hour in the afternoon session Fin Bean batted with perfect composure to make 25 in two hours and it took a ball that bounced high out of the rough from Tom Hartley to bring about his downfall, George Lavelle taking the catch to complete a dismissal that heartened the watching Simon Sutcliffe, the former Warwickshire bowler who coached both Hartley and Lavelle at Merchant Taylor’s School, Crosby.”I think Fin’s had a very good debut,” said Gibson. “Even though he didn’t go on and get a hundred or a fifty, he faced a lot of balls and spent a lot of time in the middle. Those innings will do the world for him going forwards into the rest of the season.”Bean did indeed bat well twice in this match and his innings on the final afternoon set the tone for Kohler-Cadmore and Fraine’s stroke-starved siege. When their opponents were 81 for 3 after 48 overs, Lancashire asked for the ball to be changed but that is generally a certain sign that the fielding side does not like the shape of the game. Yorkshire were 84 for 3 at tea, at which point Kohler-Cadmore and Fraine’s stand had yielded 17 runs in 19 overs. On the resumption another 18 were scored in 10.2 overs before a shower of rain interrupted play and, as we soon discovered, ended the whole shebang.

Pereira must now finally ditch "outstanding" Wolves man after Djiga signing

Vitor Pereira will firmly believe that his Wolverhampton Wanderers side can beat the Premier League drop, having overseen a big 2-0 win over Aston Villa last time out.

The relegation-threatened Old Gold were full value for that victory come full-time, having restricted Unai Emery’s away side to just one big chance all game.

Whilst Pereira would have pleased with Matheus Cunha picking up another goal to add to this Premier League resume for the season, this dogged display at the back would have impressed him even more.

Already, it seems as if fresh recruit Emmanuel Agbadou has taken to the English game like a duck to water, with the ex-Stade De Reims ace now set to be joined by a new face in the heart of defence.

Wolves' deadline signing of Djiga

Right at the death of the window, Pereira added in another new defensive body in the form of Red Star Belgrade star Nasser Djiga, with the options now available to the Portuguese head coach looking plentiful.

Indeed, in the centre-back spots, the ex-Al Shabab manager has the aforementioned Agbadou that he can rely on who won a startling 18 duels recently against Arsenal, on top of rocks such as Matt Doherty and Toti Gomes who performed in a similarly valiant manner versus Villa.

As can be seen looking at their glowing numbers above, Pereira might well feel inclined to stick with this formidable trio moving forward, with a back-to-basics approach keeping Villa very much at bay.

With the added presence of Djiga to come – who boasts five clean sheets in league action this season playing in Serbia – all of this positivity could unfortunately signal the end of this stalwart’s time at Molineux who hasn’t featured since December.

The Wolves star who needs to be sold

Indeed, Craig Dawson’s playing days at the Old Gold had already started to unravel, with the 34-year-old only making three Premier League appearances during Pereira’s tenure to date.

Only keeping one clean sheet during his 15 league games this season too, with Gary O’Neil once regularly picking the Wolves number 15 when still in charge, it does feel as if the end is in sight now for the top-flight veteran in the West Midlands.

After all, if rumours are to be believed from deadline day, the lowly top-flight outfit were willing to offload Dawson to Leicester City in exchange for former Old Gold star Conor Coady to return, before settling for the acquisition of Djiga.

That won’t exactly fill the ÂŁ45k-per-week asset with much confidence that he can win back a starting spot under Pereira, therefore, with the Portuguese manager more than vindicated in his decision-making at this moment in time to try something fresh at the back, over reverting back to Dawson’s leaky displays.

Whilst Dawson will lament falling down the pecking order, new Wolves buy Djiga will hope he’s given plenty of opportunities to impress moving forward, having also bravely tallied up 5.5 ball recoveries on average this season playing for Red Star.

Once labelled as “outstanding” when at the top of his game in England by journalist Matt Law, Wolves fans will take no joy in the sad decline of their 61-game servant, but will realise all these fresh arrivals coming in means his Old Gold expiry date is near.

Virat Kohli 'NOT okay' with 'appalling' invasion of privacy at Perth team hotel

Player upset over video that was filmed inside his hotel room and shared on social media; hotel in question apologises

Sidharth Monga31-Oct-2022Virat Kohli has revealed a breach of privacy at his hotel room in Perth, from when India were stationed in the city for their preparatory camp and matches ahead of the T20 World Cup. Though Kohli did not say when the incident in question took place, ESPNcricinfo has learned it was on October 8, two days after the team had arrived in Australia.Kohli made details of the breach public via a video on his Instagram page only on October 31, after India had finished their Perth leg of the tournament with the game against South Africa on Sunday. The video, which had been originally uploaded on TikTok by an unidentified user, gave viewers a walkthrough of the room and was captioned “King Kohli’s hotel room”.”I understand that fans get very happy and excited seeing their favourite players and get excited to meet them and I’ve always appreciated that,” Kohli wrote in his post on Instagram. “But this video here is appalling and it’s made me feel very paranoid about my privacy. If I cannot have privacy in my own hotel room, then where can I really expect any personal space at all?? I’m NOT okay with this kind of fanaticism and absolute invasion of privacy. Please respect people’s privacy and not treat them as a commodity for entertainment.”The hotel, Crown Towers, has since apologised* for the incident and said “the individuals involved have been stood down and removed from the Crown account”.

A post shared by Virat Kohli (@virat.kohli)

“We unreservedly apologise to the guest involved and will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure this remains an isolated incident,” the hotel management said in a statement. “Crown has taken immediate steps to rectify the issue. The individuals involved have been stood down and removed from the Crown account, and the original video was swiftly removed from the social media platform.”Crown is conducting an investigation with the third-party contractor and will take any further steps necessary to ensure an incident of this nature does not happen again. We are also cooperating with the Indian Cricket team and the International Cricket Council to convey our apologies and will continue to work with them as we progress the investigation.”The ICC said it was “incredibly disappointed by the gross invasion of privacy” that Kohli had suffered. “We continue to work with event hotels and security providers to ensure that this remains an isolated incident and player privacy is fully respected at all times.”Among the first people to respond to Kohli’s post was David Warner, who responded, tagging the hotel, “This is ridiculous, totally unacceptable.”ESPNcricinfo understands the Indian team hadn’t raised the issue with the ICC or Cricket Australia, but they did bring it up with the hotel. At the time of writing, India were on their way to Adelaide, where they will play Bangladesh on Wednesday.Ironically, Kohli has said in the past that he finds more privacy and personal space when he is away from India, that the players can walk on the streets without getting mobbed by fans, as would be the case in India.
