Having seen their gamble last summer fail to pay off, Liverpool could quickly bid farewell to Chiesa. calls it "goodbye for sure", with the upcoming summer transfer window an opportunity to move on, and Serie A the "possible" destination for the Euro 2020 winner.

Injuries have defined Chiesa's career since an international breakout during Italy's European Championship triumph nearly four years ago. Juventus gave up and let him go surprisingly cheap – for just £12.5 million ($16.2m) – but the winger has fared worse at Liverpool. A combination of fitness issues and failing to suitably impress Arne Slot has resulted in just 11 appearances across all competitions – and only 25 minutes in the Premier League.

DID YOU KNOW?

Napoli is considered the most likely option for the winger. He is believed to have the admiration of Antonio Conte, while the club didn't replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after cashing in on the Georgian in January when he left for Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho has also been strongly courted.

Napoli is thought to be an agreeable option to Chiesa, but an important caveat of leaving Liverpool would be accepting a salary cut to move elsewhere. The Reds could also sanction a loan if a permanent deal doesn't prove to be viable.

Muzarabani, Tiripano return to Zimbabwe squad for Afghanistan ODIs

Left-arm spinner Ainsley Ndlovu also returned to the squad of 15 that will be led by Craig Ervine, after last playing an ODI nearly three years ago. The selectors also picked uncapped fast bowler Tanaka Chivanga, who made his T20I debut against Namibia last month.Muzarabani missed the T20Is against Namibia at home because he was a net bowler with IPL side Lucknow Super Giants, who played their maiden IPL season and finished third on the points table.Compared to the ODI squad that toured Sri Lanka earlier this year, Sean Williams misses out because of personal matters for which Zimbabwe Cricket has granted him compassionate leave. Farke must drop Joel Piroe to unleash "dynamite" Leeds star

Leeds United are back in action in the Championship for the first time since Christmas as they travel to Stoke City for an away match on Boxing Day.

The Whites are currently second in the division and will be hoping to maintain their place in the automatic promotion spots with a win over Narcis Pelach’s side this evening.

Daniel Farke’s men ran out convincing 4-0 winners against Oxford United at Elland Road last weekend, thanks to goals from Dan James, Jayden Bogle, Brenden Aaronson, and Manor Solomon.

The German head coach could still make some changes to his starting line-up from that match, however, and one player who could be dropped is Joel Piroe.

Why Joel Piroe could be dropped

The Dutch forward was selected to start as the number nine for Leeds against Oxford and was directly involved in one of the four goals, teeing up Solomon to score in the second half with a pass into the box for the winger.

Piroe, however, has only scored one goal in his last seven games in the Championship and his all-round play has still left plenty to be desired.

As you can see in the table above, the former Swansea marksman was a lightweight at the top end of the pitch, completing just ten passes and losing 100% of his duels, whilst he was also wasteful with his shot attempts.

The left-footed forward’s work out of possession has been dismal throughout the season, as he has lost a staggering 73% of his duels on the ground and in the air.

With this, and the hectic festive schedule, in mind, Farke must drop the Leeds lightweight to the bench and offer Mateo Joseph another chance to impress from the start.

Why Mateo Joseph should start

The Spain U21 international, who was once described as “dynamite” inside the box by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has started ten of his 22 appearances in the Championship so far this season.

Despite his inexperience and age, having turned 21 in October, has fared better in duels than Piroe, winning 36% of his ground duels and 30% of his battles overall, which suggests that he offers slightly more than the Dutchman in physical contests.

Joseph has scored two goals, created four ‘big chances’, and recorded three assists in the division, despite only starting ten games, and this shows that the youngster does have the ability to make an impact in the final third.

However, the academy graduate has only scored two goals from 3.61 xG, and his wasteful finishing could be why Farke has not opted to select him as a starter week-in-week-out over Piroe.

The Dutchman’s poor display, despite assisting the fourth goal, against Oxford could provide Joseph with an opportunity to come in and show the manager that he has what it takes to be the leading number nine for Leeds moving forward this season.

Ben McDermott doles out punishment in Hampshire's Radlett romp

Australian import hits 83 off 30 as Middlesex wake up to their false dawn

David Hopps07-Jun-2022There have been swingers in Radlett – famously so, as they were once the subject of a Channel 4 documentary – but sadly, as far as Middlesex were concerned, they were not of the cricketing variety. When it came to games between bat and ball there was hardly a nod and a wink to be had as Middlesex’s innings rarely got off the straight and narrow. For Hampshire, though, it was a case of bring on the party. Ben McDermott, stocky and belligerent – think Bob Hoskins with athletic talent – brought along his own playlist of sixes, nine of them included in a destructive innings of 83 in 30 balls. His stand of 132 in 9.4 overs with James Vince broke the record for Hampshire’s opening T20 stand for the second game running. Australia have omitted him from their squad for Sri Lanka and he is sticking around to make counties pay and seek a wildcard spot in the Hundred. I mean, why wouldn’t you?Middlesex did not bowl well at McDermott. Too often, they were short and straight, and seven of his nine sixes were walloped into the square-leg arc. They know as well as anyone how to defend Radlett’s small boundaries and the pitch was slow and low, but with only 142 for 7 in the bank and McDermott flexing his muscles and thinking “club ground”, there was little to be done against such a combative assault. The upshot was a nine-wicket victory for Hampshire, who won with eight overs to spare. Vince, England’s lost stylist, collected an unbeaten half-century to round things off. Hampshire escaped the foot of South Group as a result and they looked a likelier side than Middlesex to be in the shake-up when the group stakes reach their climax this time next month.

It’s well known how small the ground is here and normally how good a wicket it is, but in the middle we thought it was actually a par score on that wicket,” McDermott said. “We got off to a good powerplay and I just thought ‘I’m going to keep going here’ and try and kill the game, which I was lucky enough to do. I sort of mishit a couple of those for six and got a bit lucky at times with the wind swirling around and making the boundary even shorter. We’ve got to get on a little bit of a roll now and keep winning games.”This is a young Middlesex side, the sort of side that, one might postulate, would benefit hugely from the astute presence of Eoin Morgan in the middle order, not to say the dressing room, but Morgan was still protecting his minor groin injury ahead of his captaincy of England’s ODI side for a three-match series against the Netherlands from June 17, an undertaking which (although enlightened in its way) further drains the Blast of resources and appeal, as England will field a Test and one-day side at the same time. There is no slight to the Blast that the ECB will not consider, and no slight to the Blast that the counties will not regard with meek acquiescence.Radlett is one of the Blast’s quainter settings. It is an affluent Hertfordshire town, just inside the M25, and the sort of place where sixes are likely to plop into well-tended privet hedges to ripples of applause and where spectators murmur “buzzers”, somewhat self-consciously, whenever there is an overthrow. If they played music between balls, it would probably be Beethoven’s with the only debate about which version to choose. If you must take a beating then at least in such an atmosphere it is regarded with an air of forgiveness. Youthful promise, of which Middlesex have plenty, is also an asset on the bad nights and, on this occasion, it was Jack Davies who displayed flashes of invention to make 34 from 27 balls.Related

Why Brathwaite, Patel retired out tactically in the same game

Middlesex’s runs have come in the top three all season and they had perished by the 10th over, 70 on the board. All fell to variants of the mid-off loft: Stephen Eskinazi fatally advancing down the pitch; Joe Cracknell muscling a ball of full length; and Max Holden, who had his stylish moments, opening the front leg but failing to find lift-off.That was soon 94 for 6 as Middlesex failed to find a boundary (not all that far away) for 34 deliveries. Batting promotions were made as much because if the need to juggle limited resources as conviction. Luke Hollman, pushed up to No. 4, mistimed a legside hit, and Chris Green, in at No. 7, lost his middle stump to one that hurried through low. Both were victims of the left-arm spinner, Liam Dawson, who found occasional turn and who added John Simpson at deep square leg to return an excellent spell of 3 for 14. Better fortunes than last year when he conceded 54 runs on the same ground or indeed in 2020, when he ruptured an Achilles tendon. From the moment that Thilan Walallawita spiled 18 from his first over (the second of the reply), Hampshire’s authority was clear. They took their cue from that. By the time Middlesex introduced Green, Hampshire were 103 after eight overs – perhaps the McDermott vs Green match-up was a contest they did not fancy, as there could be little other reason. But no match-up curbed McDermott and Martin Andersson had taken more punishment than anybody when Eskinazi brought it to an end by clinging on to a skier at deep mid-off.Hampshire now have back-to-back wins and the South Group could be about to concertina in characteristic fashion, leaving any number of counties in the shake-up as July arrives. As for Middlesex, their bright start appears to have been a false dawn and the overlooking of Nathan Sowter looks increasingly strange. If they have taken a view, a player with such a serviceable record looks bound to move on.

Romano: Man City join race to sign "excellent" £25m defender in January

With the January transfer window well and truly underway, Manchester City have unsurprisingly wasted no time before turning their attention to some much-needed reinforcements for Pep Guardiola.

Man City transfer news

Sat outside the Premier League’s top four and entering 2025 off the back of just their second win in 13 games in all competitions courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Leicester City, the Citizens are enduring their worst-ever campaign under Guardiola. They’ve been hit from all angles, with an ageing squad catching up to them and injuries piling higher than they’ve ever done in the last nine years.

Man City renew interest in "genius" star who's far better than Grealish

Manchester City are interested in signing a player from Barcelona in 2025.

ByBen Gray Jan 2, 2025

For the first time in what feels like forever, Manchester City are desperate for reinforcements in order to turn their season around once and for all. Signing a replacement for the injured Rodri will undoubtedly sit top of their list of priorities, with the likes of Martin Zubimendi already threatening to steal the headlines as a result, but Guardiola needs more than one reinforcement this month.

All it takes is one glance at the Spaniard’s defensive options to realise just how much Manchester City could do with an overhaul. Kyle Walker is 34 years old and has shown signs that he could be past his best, John Stones remains injury-prone and is also now in his 30s, and the same will be able to be said about Nathan Ake this time next year.

So, one particular transfer rumour should come as little surprise. According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have now joined the race to sign Abdukodir Khusanov from RC Lens in the January transfer window.

Competing against a number of other top clubs, Guardiola and Manchester City will hope to convince the young central defender, valued at £25m, and commence a much-needed rebuild in the process.

"Excellent" Khusanov would ease Man City's defensive issue

Whilst it’s unlikely that Khusanov would come straight into Guardiola’s starting side if the likes of Stones and Ake were passed fit, recent injury issues open the door of opportunity for the young defender to instantly make his mark if he completes a January switch. At just 20 years old, he’d certainly solve City’s problem of an ageing backline in a deal focused on a future star who could play a part for years to come.

Khusanov has already earned plenty of fans throughout what is still a young career, including Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, who described Lens star as “an excellent” centre-back and “the future legend of Uzbek football” at the end of last year.

City have had no trouble in convincing players in the past and they may now look to use that pull power once again to win the race for Khusanov’s signature this month.

Channel Seven takes Cricket Australia to court to terminate TV broadcast deal

Broadcaster cites “multiple quality and standards breaches, CA “astonished” by the action

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jun-2022Cricket Australia’s free-to-air television broadcaster Channel Seven has filed proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia to terminate their A$82 million-a-year broadcasting agreement which has two years to run citing “multiple quality and standards breaches.”The move by the network continues a long-running battle between Seven and CA that began in 2020 following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.Seven West Media, the owner of Channel Seven, released a statement on Thursday confirming they had escalated their position against CA.”Seven West Media Limited through its subsidiary Seven Network (Operations) Limited (Seven) has filed court proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia against Cricket Australia (CA) in relation to multiple quality and standard breaches by CA of Seven’s Media Rights Agreement with CA (MRA),” the statement said.Related

“The SWM proceedings will seek both: a court declaration that Seven is entitled to terminate the MRA on the basis of materialcontract breaches by CA which were not remedied; and damages arising out of past breaches. Seven previously obtained preliminary discovery proceedings in the Federal Court relating to the claims.”Seven’s intention is to terminate the MRA, conditional on the Federal Court granting a declaration that Seven is entitled to do so. Seven has the right to waive this condition. The damages action is not conditional. Seven will continue to perform its obligations under the MRA (in terms of telecasting Tests and BBL etc.) until terminated.”Seven has pursued the informal dispute resolution procedure under the MRA but the procedure failed to resolve the dispute.”Cricket Australia responded saying they would fight the action, stating they were “astonished” by Seven’s position after two seasons were delivered amid the challenges of the pandemic.”Cricket Australia (CA) is aware of reports that our broadcast partner, the Seven Network, has commenced legal proceedings against CA in relation to recent COVID-impacted cricket seasons,” the statement said.”CA delivered two very successful cricket seasons in 2020-21 and 2021-22, including every WBBL and BBL game (a total of 240 games over two seasons) and highly acclaimed international schedules, despite the enormous challenges presented by the global pandemic.”In the circumstances, CA is astonished that Seven has brought this unwarranted action which will be strenuously defended.”Seven signed a six-year deal in 2018 to be the free-to-air broadcast partner of CA alongside subscription provider Foxtel, but have been keen to terminate the deal in recent years. In late 2020, Seven took CA to an independent arbitrator seeking massive cuts to their A$82 million-a-year share of the A$1.18 billion deal signed alongside Foxtel in April 2018.The arbitrator, Justin Jameson of Venture Consulting, concluded that Seven should get only a A$5 million discount of the A$70 million reduction the network had been chasing. The “quality and standards breaches” are believed to be surrounding the BBL which has declined in popularity since Seven began broadcasting it in 2018-19 although ratings have remained relatively good compared to other Australian sports leagues.Part of CA’s push to revive the BBL this year, via initiatives such as the overseas draft, is with the next TV rights cycle in mind when the current deal with Seven and Foxtel ends in 2024.

Chelsea entering pole position to sign £38m midfielder after making contact

Chelsea are emerging as the main contenders to sign a new midfielder after reaching out to his club, and it is believed the west Londoners have been considering a deal for more than 12 months.

Injuries to Wesley Fofana, who could be out for the rest of the Premier League season, and Benoit Badiashile have cut Maresca’s central defensive options in half – with there being many reported targets on Chelsea’s shortlist.

Tomas Araujo [Benfica], Antonio Silva [Benfica], Ousmane Diomande [Sporting], Illia Zabarnyi [Bournemouth] and Dean Huijsen [Bournemouth] are all centre-backs being considered by Chelsea, according to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, but perhaps the most headline-grabbing one of them all is former player Marc Guehi.

The Crystal Palace stalwart, fresh off the back of an incredible 2024, is being eyed by Chelsea as an option for the club before February 3, even if a deal is described as difficult to do.

Chelsea chiefs have been internally debating a January deal for Guehi, according to Fabrizio Romano, but it is unclear just how much Palace will demand for the England international after rejecting a £65 million bid from Newcastle in the summer.

The 24-year-old has 18 months left on his deal at Selhurst Park, so perhaps Palace chairma Steve Parish could be forced to sell for a cheaper fee if Guehi pushes for a return to Stamford Bridge.

As rumours surround the potential arrival of Guehi, there are suggestions that Chelsea are considering a loan recall for Trevoh Chalobah as well, so Palace face the very real possibility of losing at least one defender this month.

Meanwhile, in terms of other positions, TEAMtalk report that Chelsea have looked at a January deal for River Plate sensation Franco Mastantuono.

Chelsea moving into pole position to sign Mastantuono

The teenager is fast earning a reputation as “one of the world’s best upcoming young stars”, as per TT, and he’s been in Chelsea’s sights for over a year.

Chelsea have been in contact with River Plate over signing Mastantuono in that period, and Maresca’s side are entering pole position for the Argentine ahead of other interested clubs.

Franco Mastantuono for River Plate

However, while they’ve entertained the possibility of bringing the 17-year-old to west London as soon as this month, they will have to wait until the summer as things stand.

Mastantuono’s deal includes a unique release clause, currently set at around £38 million, but it is set to increase as January goes on. The clause could go as high as £43 million, and this has apparently prompted Chelsea to stall on moving for him until later in 2025.

In any case, TT state that Chelsea are “working hard” on his signing, as BlueCo carry on their trend of cherry-picking world football’s hottest emerging talents.
