Gotham beat Chicago 2-1Williams becomes NWSL all-time leading scorerStriker scores 79th career goalWHAT HAPPENED?
Williams opened the scoring of the match in the 57th minute with a perfectly-placed header, much to an eruption of celebration from her teammates on the pitch. The momentous goal cemented her name in history as she passed Chelsea superstar Sam Kerr's record that has stood since 2019.

Williams has long been a star for club and country, but now, she will forever be recognized as one of the best goalscorers women's soccer has ever seen.
The 30-year-old U.S. international was drafted into the league in 2015 by the Western New York Flash – who eventually became the North Carolina Courage. She followed the club to the southeast coast of the U.S. where she bagged 45 goals in a four-year span.
Williams was traded to the KC Current in 2022, but only made one appearance due to injury. She then joined Gotham in 2023 via trade and has since made history, helping them to their first-ever NWSL title last season while smashing the scoring record in 2024.
Williams herself has claimed four NWSL titles, three NWSL shields, a league MVP award and one Golden Boot award. She has 63 international caps with the USWNT, as well.

Both Kerr and Williams have both played for the Flash and Gotham, and the two overlapped as teammates in 2014 with the Western New York side.

Hodge: Australia attack’s versatility might get them over the line
Big PictureA lot about the meeting between Australia and West Indies at Trent Bridge will be determined by a single question: which West Indies side will turn up?If it is the one that razed Pakistan in their tournament opener, also at Trent Bridge, or the one that clouted New Zealand into submission in the warm-up match, then Australia may well be in for a very difficult time of it, having stuttered their way through an opening victory over Afghanistan in Bristol. However, Aaron Finch’s men have already beaten West Indies once on this tour, and comfortably at that, in their own warm-up match on a postage stamp of a ground in Hampshire. And prior to that, the Caribbean side were near enough bullied into losing a triangular series final to an increasingly confident and capable Bangladesh at picturesque Malahide in Ireland.Australia’s coach Justin Langer certainly gave some indication as to the capriciousness of West Indies cricket – in contrast to the awe-inspiring consistency – allied to flair, that he saw as a child in Perth when watching the teams of Clive Lloyd and Viv Richards. “One thing we know about West Indies, particularly with Andre Russell and Chris Gayle, it’s going to be exciting cricket,” Langer said. “When I was growing up it was calypso cricket and I think we’re seeing plenty of signs of calypso cricket, the way they’re running in, bowling fast, they’re not necessarily going to be bowling the same spot every ball like Curtly Ambrose, but it’s going to be exciting to watch and they all try to hit sixes most balls. Darren Bravo’s a little more orthodox but [it’s] always exciting playing West Indies. When I was growing up, they were my heroes and they’re not my heroes today because I hope we beat them on Thursday.”While Jason Holder’s team have sought to be aggressive in everything they do, Langer and Finch have resolved to play a tighter game. They will be hoping to use the pressure of their bowling and fielding, in addition to the resourcefulness of a batting line-up being kept as deep as possible by the preference of Nathan Coulter-Nile over others, to corner West Indies into errors. Chief among their methods will be liberal use of the short ball, something the Caribbean side also used to good effect against Pakistan. The likelihood of a dry surface at Trent Bridge, as seen in the game between England and Pakistan, will also encourage balls banged in with a cross-seam for another reason – extracting old-ball movement.IDI via Getty ImagesForm guide (last five completed matches)Australia WWWWW West Indies WLLWL In the spotlightIt’s a little over six years since Mitchell Starc laid waste to West Indies on a memorable afternoon at the WACA Ground, finding extremes of swing and pace that remain in the mind’s eye of all who witnessed it. He produced a similarly destructive afternoon in 2015 at Eden Park, taking Australia within a wicket of a World Cup pool-game victory their batting scarcely deserved. This time around, he comes to Trent Bridge having looked to be revving into strong form against Afghanistan. While short balls will be a focus of the Australian attack, Starc’s most dangerous deliveries are undoubtedly full, fast and swinging down the line of the stumps. Mixed-up footwork created by liberal use of the short ball can often allow for the full ball to be even more dangerous, as Gayle, Bravo and Holder will remember from that day in Perth. If it was his batting that turned so many heads in the IPL, Andre Russell proved against Pakistan he is also more than capable of being a match-winner with the ball. Against Australia, Russell has provided plenty of evidence of his skills in the BBL, but he last played them in ODIs in 2013, meaning that first-hand experience among his opponents will be relatively slight. In the warm-up game in Hampshire, Russell faced only four deliveries, bowled by Adam Zampa, and delivered three overs for 17. If West Indies are to win, they will need much more out of Russell, and both sides know it.Team newsAustralia have flagged an unchanged line-up, resisting the possibility of recalling Nathan Lyon as a second spinner in place of Nathan Coulter-Nile.Australia (probable) 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 David Warner, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Adam ZampaKemar Roach is waiting in the wings should West Indies want to alter the balance of their pace-bowling attack after its undemanding outing against Pakistan. Gayle and Russell were both at training on the eve of the game. “Chris was at practice for the last couple days, so Chris for me is all well and ready to go. Andre will be obviously assessed today, and we’re very, very hopeful that he’ll be fit tomorrow.” Holder said, adding that the team will go by what the two men have to say about their fitness.West Indies (possible): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Shai Hope (wk), 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Jason Holder (capt), 8 Carlos Brathwaite, 9 Ashley Nurse, 10 Sheldon Cottrell, 11 Oshane ThomasPitch and conditionsTrent Bridge, known for high-scoring, did not disappoint in Pakistan’s unexpected victory over England. It will be the 481 pitch, by the way, but the pitch and square can be expected to be dry, with the hunt for reverse swing – by legal means, of course – likely to be some sort of a factor.ESPNcricinfo LtdStrategy punts Spin bowling was a strong suit for Australia in their warm-up against West Indies, as Zampa, Glenn Maxwell and Steven Smith bowled a combined 14 overs for returns of 3 for 67. The ground dimensions that day were small, but there has been no inclination from Langer at least to add to the repertoire by calling in Lyon. “That is because of their left-handers. That said we probably won’t bowl two spinners here against West Indies. There’s always thoughts about Nathan Lyon, every game there’s thoughts about playing Nathan Lyon, but Adam Zampa’s doing a really good job for us. There is thinking about him because of their left-handers but Adam Zampa has a very good wrong’un, good top spinner, Glenn Maxwell’s bowling well, so hopefully we’ll get some balance there. Some of the other grounds we might look to play two spinners or the match-ups for the offspinner will be more appropriate but probably not here.” Either way, Holder’s men will need to find a way to deal more effectively with Zampa and Maxwell in particular, mixing strike-rotation with judicious attack. West Indies have made a clear decision to give the new ball to bowlers who will gain swing and seam, reserving the “bang it in” merchants until after some of the Kookaburra’s shine has worn off. They will be the latest group of pacemen to try to exploit Finch’s well-documented flaw when facing deliveries moving back into him from outside the off stump, as classically illustrated by Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Pradeep during a warm-up game that otherwise went swimmingly for the Australians at Southampton. Finch, having made an aggressive 66 against Afghanistan, appears to have found the freedom to launch in the fashion of his best days, while his partner Warner tries to find his best as an international opener after a year’s suspension. The combination of an open, aggressive Finch and probing new ball work from the West Indies has great risk/reward potential for both sides.Stats and Trivia Australia have won only three of eight ODI appearances at Trent Bridge, and their most recent match here was a 242-run hiding by England last year. By contrast, West Indies have only lost once in eight games at the venue, and that was as far back as 1984. Of all Australia and West Indies bowlers to have competed against one another, only Len Pascoe’s 21 wickets at 13.52 from eight matches have come at a cheaper rate than Mitchell Starc’s 16 at 13.87 in six. Quotes”We expect some fireworks from the West Indies. There’s going to be times where the boys are going to have to take a deep breath and keep smiling and bowling their best ball. But that comes with experience and that’s what great teams and great players do.”

The Blues surprised many when revealing that Argentine tactician Pochettino would be allowed to walk away from Stamford Bridge on the back of a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. Timo Werner arrived on loan from RB Leipzig, with the deal though to contain an option to buy him in the summer. Following the German, Spurs sealed a permanent move for much-needed new centre-back Radu Dragusin, who signed from Genoa for around £25 million.
To make way for these new arrivals, and balance the books in terms of player salaries, the Lilywhites also agreed loan exits for as many as six players.

The likes of Ivan Perisic and Eric Dier, who sealed moves to Hajduk Split and Bayern Munich respectively, have certainly played their last games for Tottenham. Dier and Perisic's deals expire later this year, so the loan deals will allow both Hajduk Split and Bayern Munich to agree summer free moves rather than pay Spurs an outright fee this month.
This is still good business for the north Londoners, though, as it sweetens the transfers of unwanted players and rids Tottenham of their high-earning salaries.
Spurs also chasing some of Europe's brightest young talents
Levy and co have acted cleverly this transfer market, and are now widely reported to be chasing a deal for Club Brugge sensation Antonio Nusa.
Antonio Nusa in Norway training.
Spurs are currently locked in talks to sign Nusa, as per reliable transfer sources like Fabrizio Romano, as the Lilywhites make good on their policy of recruiting Europe's finest talents. Alasdair Gold, a Tottenham correspondent for football.london, has previously stated that they're aiming to replicate the successful transfers of Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr in this respect.
Both starlets have gone to become real success stories in north London, with Spurs attempting to sign Nusa and send him back to Brugge for the remainder of this campaign.
Tottenham set sights on Boris Mamzuah
According to German news outlet Bild, Tottenham have now set their sights on another rising star after Nusa. Indeed, it is believed Spurs are interested in signing Hertha Berlin youngster Boris Mamzuah, alongside a host of other top European sides like Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Ajax, RB Salzburg and La Liga champions Barcelona.
Hertha recently protected themselves by tying the midfielder down with a long-term deal, but the contract is thought to contain an affordable release clause of around £4 million.
While this fee would surely be no real obstacle for Levy, Spurs' real worry is the sheer amount of prestigious competition for Mamzuah's signature.
The German's manager, Pal Dardai, has already branded the teenager a "born footballer" and "one of the greatest talents of recent years".

Man City battle against APT rulesReceive support from three clubsJudgement might be announced soonWHAT HAPPENED?
According to Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Newcastle have sided with City in their battle against the Premier League's Associated Party Transactions (APT) rules. These regulations, introduced post the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle in November 2021, are designed to prevent clubs from inflating sponsorship deals through related entities, thereby maintaining financial fair play within the league. Central to City's legal argument is the claim of discrimination. City asserts that the APT rules amount to a "tyranny of the majority," disproportionately targeting clubs with owners from the Middle East. They argue that these rules are not only restrictive but also unfairly prejudiced, designed to curb the influence and investment capabilities of Middle Eastern stakeholders.
AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE
Chelsea have been vocal about the need for greater transparency regarding APT rules. The club have an existing deal with Infinite Athlete, a company partially owned by Chelsea's joint owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. Chelsea's statement criticises the current APT framework for its lack of clarity, especially concerning multi-club ownership. They argue that the rules need to be more explicit about what constitutes an acceptable transaction to avoid disputes over inflated sponsorship deals in the future. Meanwhile, Aston Villa's co-owner, Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris, allegedly shares a close rapport with City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak. This relationship has seen Villa aligning with City's frustrations over the imposed spending limits. Sawiris, alongside Mubarak, contends that the current financial regulations stifle investment and growth potential, which is crucial for competing at the highest level.
DID YOU KNOW?
Newcastle, owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, have remained somewhat reticent in public votes concerning the APT rules. Nevertheless, the Magpies' abstention in recent votes hints at their tacit support for City's cause. The Magpies already benefit from a lucrative shirt sponsorship deal with Saudi events management firm Sela. A favourable outcome for City in this legal battle would likely set a precedent that could benefit Newcastle's financial strategies as well.
However, 10 to 12 clubs have sided with the Premier League's existing rules, including heavyweights like Manchester United, Arsenal, Fulham, Wolves, Brighton, and Tottenham. These clubs have submitted various forms of support, ranging from witness statements to letters, defending the APT regulations. They fear that a victory for City could undermine the financial integrity and competitive balance of the league.

The outcome of this legal battle holds significant ramifications for the Premier League's financial landscape. Should City prevail, it could lead to a major overhaul of the APT regulations, potentially opening the floodgates for increased investment from related entities. This, in turn, could alter the competitive dynamics of the league, enabling clubs with wealthy owners to gain an upper hand through enhanced financial muscle.
The level of spending has never been higher in the Premier League than it is now. New and improved commercial deals have meant the funds available to top-flight clubs are allowing clubs to really push the limit.
Some clubs are struggling to work within the regulations of Financial Fair Play, with the likes of Everton and Nottingham Forest the latest to be propelled into the spotlight by the governing bodies.
But last summer alone, Premier League clubs spent a staggering £2.36bn across the board, dwarfing the summer of 2022 spending which still came in at £1.92bn.
Amid the winter market, Football FanCast has taken a look at just how much each of the current Premier League sides have spent in the Premier League era.
20 Luton Town £31m
Premier League new boys Luton Town will have their first taste of top-flight revenue coming into the club following their play-off win last season, but their overall spend since the Premier League’s conception in 1992 comes in at a mere £31m.
In comparison to some of the more established Premier League sides, this seems a minute figure, with only four other former Premier League clubs spending less in the same period.
Although this figure may seem crazy to some, it has to be remembered that just ten years ago, the Hatters were playing in the Conference before making an astonishing climb up the English pyramid to earn a spot in the Premier League.
Luton spent £19.5m of that £31m overall in the summer following their promotion, and if they can stay afloat, perhaps they will be able to consider spending more significantly in the coming summer transfer window.
19 Brentford £209m
Brentford striker Ivan Toney.
Brentford now have a few seasons of Premier League football under their belt, although they are not finding it so straightforward this season.
The difference between Luton and Brentford’s spending, however, is staggering. The Bees’ spending has risen year-on-year since their promotion to the top flight, with last summer their biggest ever spend at a total of around £60m being spent on players.
Similarly to Luton, Brentford have enjoyed a stunning rise through the leagues over the last decade to earn themselves a spot in the Premier League. Big funds in the future could be generated through the potential sale of Ivan Toney, which could leave further room for the Bees to spend on new players.
18 Sheffield United £250m
Returning to the Premier League in the 2023/24 campaign for the fourth time since its conception, the Blades have managed to still spend a decent amount of money considering their journey between the leagues over the last decade.
During their spells in the Premier League, Sheffield United have not been fearful of splashing the cash, with the 2019/20 campaign seeing the Blades spend £61.7m alone.
Their club record signing, Rhian Brewster, almost matches Luton’s overall spend, with the former Liverpool striker costing the Blades around £24m.
17 Burnley £365m
Zeki-Amdouni-Burnley
Much like the Blades, Burnley have spent a number of seasons over the last 15 years bouncing between the Premier League and the Championship.
But there is a huge difference in their transfer spending since the 1992/93 campaign, with the Clarets spending a further £115m on the South Yorkshire side.
And the recent summer window saw Vincent Kompany handed a lot of reinforcements, with the Lancashire side spending around £95m across their ten new signings.
16 Nottingham Forest £428m
Having returned to the Premier League in 2022, Nottingham Forest have certainly not held back in their spending across the three full transfer windows they have experienced as a top flight side.
Indeed, since their promotion in 2022, Forest have spent around £272m under Greek owner Evangelos Marinakis. They even broke the record for the most arrivals in a summer window with their 21 signings in 2022.
However, it seems they may have landed themselves in a spot of bother as they have since been charged with breaking the profit and sustainability regulations; they have now been referred to an independent commission.
Nottingham Forest: Every signing since promotion to the Premier League
Nottingham Forest have splashed the cash since returning to the top flight – FFC has detailed every signing they’ve made.
ByMark Marston Feb 2, 2024 15 Bournemouth £440m
Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.
Bournemouth are another club who have been between leagues over the last decade, however, they have been able to spend seven of the last nine campaigns in the Premier League.
And that has allowed them to splash the cash – relatively speaking. The most recent summer transfer window was the Cherries’ biggest spend yet with nearly £110m spent.
Results have now begun to flow under Andoni Iraola and Bournemouth look in a strong position to maintain their spot in the top flight for another campaign, so expect this figure to rise.
14 Brighton & Hove Albion £463m
Brighton striker Joao Pedro
The impressive stories continue with Brighton & Hove Albion, whose rise to Premier League prominence has been nothing short of incredible.
Roberto De Zerbi has led the Seagulls to European football, and it has to be said that they have become the powerhouses they are now through smart recruitment.
Unlike some of the sides who proceed them on this list, the Seagulls have not had a season where they have spent more than £85m – which came in the latest summer window.
13 Crystal Palace £467m
Michael Olise
Narrowly pipping their A23 rivals, Crystal Palace have now spent the last 11 seasons in the Premier League, which has allowed them to spend as an established top-flight side.
However, this has not necessarily been the case over recent years, with a total spend of just £35m spent between 2018 and 2021.
Perhaps the Eagles can be praised for that, with a number of clubs in and around them in the league now being hit with violations of the financial regulations and they have been able to maintain their Premier League status despite their spending not being excessive in recent seasons.
12 Fulham £612m
Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.
Fulham may have not been as consistent a Premier League side over the last decade as the likes of Crystal Palace. However, they have spent significantly more than their London rivals, having first made the Premier League in 2001.
With Shahid Khan as their owner, the Cottagers certainly have the financial backing to compete with most of the other teams in the Premier League.
Despite this, they will naturally fall short in terms of their revenue stream not being able to match the bigger sides who, therefore, have an advantage with the Financial Fair Play regulations.
11 Wolverhampton Wanderers £732m
Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.
Although Wolves fell down the leagues to hit League One in 2013, they have been a Premier League side since their promotion in 2018.
And they have definitely spent like an established Premier League side in recent windows, with the arrivals of the likes of Matheus Cunha and Matheus Nunes both in excess of £38m.
Under Gary O’Neil, Wolves are showing no signs of being anything other than being a top-flight side, which should suggest the spending will not come to an end any time soon.
Contributions throughout the order, aided by some poor Leicestershire fielding, gave the home side a solid first innings in tricky conditions
ECB Reporters Network24-Jun-2019Alex Wakely made his first half-century since resigning the Northamptonshire captaincy to lead his side to a good opening day against Leicestershire at Wantage Road. Wakely’s 65 in testing conditions set Northants up to make 299 having been sent in before the visitors survived three overs to the close 6 for 0.Wakely’s 76 on the first day of the season was becoming a distant memory with a high score in the Championship since then of only 28. Stepping down as captain didn’t bring immediate reward with an eight-ball duck at Durham in his previous innings, but here he battled away to make important runs against the moving ball.He arrived in just the sixth over of the morning and flicked Mohammed Abbas through midwicket for his first boundary before imperiously pulling Neil Dexter’s first ball through the same region on his way to 36 not out by the lunch. After the break, another pull brought up a second half-century of the season in 102 balls with eight fours before he was tremendously caught at second slip in Abbas’ first over of a new spell 20 minutes before tea. Trying to force off the back foot, Wakely flashed an edge towards the cordon where Colin Ackermann stuck up a left hand to claim a fine catch. It ended a stand of 39 for the fourth wicket – one of several useful partnerships that Northants compiled. The ball moved all day on a green-tinged pitch and under heavy cloud and it was difficult to envisage the batsmen ever getting completely on top so to nudge the board along with good purpose – reaching 187 for 4 at one stage – was a solid effort. There were few cheap wickets. Rob Newton fell to the new ball for just 5 but everyone else got a start. Ricardo Vasconcelos worked hard for 25 before lazily driving to gully. Temba Bavuma was always scratchy but got to 20, then Dieter Klein found his outside edge with a good delivery. Rob Keogh looked in good touch, striking five boundaries but fell over a full delivery from Chris Wright to be lbw for 34.The theme continued on a day where it was hard to say any batsmen were really settled. Adam Rossington, now Northants’ Championship captain, made a breezy 45 – violently pulling Dexter over midwicket and repeating the trick against Klein to raise a first batting point. But Rossington was bowled by Will Davis and it began a slide from 210 for 5 to 250 for 9 as the second new ball claimed 3 for 7 in 13 balls. But just when Northants were about to be rolled over Matt Coles, in his second match on loan from Essex, swung 41 in 34 balls including two mighty sixes – one over midwicket and the second over deep square – to almost claim a third batting bonus point before No. 11 Ben Sanderson chipped a catch back to Abbas. But Coles should have been taken on the deep midwicket fence with the score at 265. It was one of at least seven catches that Leicestershire missed in a miserable display of fielding. Paul Horton at first slip, wicketkeeper Lewis Hill and Harry Dearden all missed two chances each as the visitors conceded an over par total given the conditions.

Palace actually took the lead and held their own for a large portion of the contest, but their efforts were cruelly undone in dramatic fashion as Hodgson struggled to find the positives at first.
“I’m not really in the mood if I’m being brutally honest of (highlighting) positives and trying to find things to say that would cheer me up, because I don’t know what could be said that would cheer me up," said Hodgson on Palace's defeat to Chelsea.

Former Palace loanee Conor Gallagher cancelled out Jefferson Lerma's opener just after half-time, with the Englishman then putting Chelsea in front on the 91st minute mark before Enzo Fernández rounded off their victory.
Mauricio Pochettino is under slightly less scrutiny after two wins on the trot in all competitions, but the same definitely cannot be said for his dugout rival from last night. Indeed, reports have suggested that chairman Steve Parish and the Palace board have been looking at managerial replacements for Hodgson, with an update now coming to light on ex-Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui.
Lopetegui "attracted" by Crystal Palace job
The Spaniard has been linked with a move to Selhurst Park following his departure from Wolves last year, and Football Insider journalist Pete O'Rourke writes that Lopetegui is "attracted" by Palace's quality squad.
Parish and co are keen on the 57-year-old as a possible replacement for Hodgson, with the ex-Sevilla boss actually near the top of their target list. However, Lopetegui is also believed to not be overly infused with taking the job right this second as they flirt with relegation.
It could be one to watch in the summer if Palace avoid a drop to the Championship, though, and City boss Guardiola interestingly holds Lopetegui in very high esteem.
"I would like to call him in the next days. I'm so disappointed, but I know what football is," said Guardiola on Lopetegui after he was once sacked by Real Madrid.
"I'm sorry for Julen because he's a friend of mine, he's an exceptional person. We played together at Barcelona, and have an amazing relationship."
The pair first powered Sri Lanka to an imposing total before Shanaka’s 3 for 27 derailed Bangladesh’s chase
The Report by Mohammad Isam31-Jul-2019Sri Lanka cantered to a 122-run win in the third and final ODI of their series against Bangladesh to complete a 3-0 whitewash. After posting an imposing 294 for 8, their second-string bowling attack ran through the visiting side in 36 overs, bowling them out for 172. Bangladesh have now lost five ODIs in a row, starting from the World Cup, their worst run of results since 2014.There was hardly any resistance from Bangladesh as Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis starred with the bat and Dasun Shanaka put up an all-round show.Sri Lanka’s dominating total came mainly due to three partnerships, two of which Mathews helmed – 101 for the fourth wicket with Kusal Mendis and 52 for the fifth with Shanaka. He only stepped on the gas when he figured it was absolutely necessary, and by then Sri Lanka were well on their way to a strong total. After Kusal Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne exited in quick succession following their 83-run second-wicket stand, Mathews and Kusal Mendis kept it steady, hitting just a single boundary between overs 20 and 30. But they burst into life in the next ten overs, which set Sri Lanka on course for the big score.Kusal Mendis struck five fours and a six in his 54 off 58 balls, falling to the first of Sabbir Rahman’s three catches. Mathews, at the other end, kept up the scoring with ones and twos, and took advantage of two missed chances on 32 and 63 respectively. But once Shanaka found his range, in the 44th over, Mathews also went after the bowling.Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews put together a century stand•AFPShanaka struck two sixes and a four in Shafiul Islam’s 20-run 45th over, before falling to a catch that Sabbir made by running in from the long-off boundary. Bangladesh still conceded 43 runs in the last 3.5 overs as Sri Lanka took 106 runs in the last ten Mathews struck eight fours and a six in his 90-ball 87, while Shanaka blazed 30 off 14 balls. While Sri Lanka were served well by the partnerships their batsmen strung together, Bangladesh were undone in the first 12 overs. Tamim Iqbal’s wretched tour ended with a caught-behind in the second over before Anamul Haque, playing his first ODI in 12 months, top-edged a flick a ball after hitting two fours off Kasun Rajitha. Mushfiqur Rahim, who made an unbeaten 98 in the second ODI, was caught at slip off Shanaka for 10, and the visitors slipped to 46 for 3.Before 20 overs were complete, Bangladesh had lost half their side. Mohammad Mithun holed out to fine-leg where Lahiru Kumara juggled a couple of times before completing the catch, and Kusal Perera took a diving one-handed catch off a Mahmudullah edge in the 20th over, the batsman finishing the series with only 18 runs to his name.Sabbir and Mehidy Hasan were then both caught in the covers off Kumara, leaving Soumya Sarkar to try to bat through till the end. He reached his first fifty after ten innings, before being bowled by Akila Dananjaya for 69, having struck five fours and a six in his 86-ball knock, the only good hand in the innings. To add to his good batting effort, Shanaka picked up three wickets, while Rajitha and Kumara took two each.It was the sort of performance to lift a team after a disappointing World Cup campaign, and Sri Lanka, with the 3-0 win, got exactly what they wanted. It was the opposite for Bangladesh.
